SPELLING BEE Our annual Spelling Bee is underway. The semi-finalists proudly showed off their medals before embarking on learning another set of words for a chance of reaching the final. Good luck everybody! NATIONAL CHILD ROAD SAFETY PROGRAMME We were fortunate to have a visit recently from members of the national child road safety team sponsored by GIST. Our children learnt about the importance of pedestrian safety, including understanding how drivers of large vehicles have difficulty seeing pedestrians, an awareness of road safety and of course the Green Cross Code.

DON GORGE COMMUNITY GROUP With Christmas behind us, a new year is upon us and, with all resolutions broken by now, I expect we are all looking forward to new adventures. It’s a bit gloomy here in the Don Gorge as I write, with damp and cold prevailing, but despite the fact that all the perennials in our garden have well and truly gone, winterflowering shrubs are in bloom, catkins and snowdrops are coming along well, bulbs are sprouting, and buds are beginning to show on several other shrubs. Spring is always the time for a good spring clean and with that in mind, we have joined the Keep Britain Tidy weekend event and are having another litter pick on Saturday 4 March, so please put this date in your diary to come along and join us. As last year, when we ‘Cleaned for the Queen’, we will cover the transpennine trail, the island and the fish pass area and really hoping that it won’t have to be postponed due to flooding again. Posters and more information will be displayed a bit nearer the time. We have applied for a Tesco grant to enhance the area behind the fish pass where there is an historic wall. If we get the money, we expect to start around April time by clearing the area of fallen trees and other debris before rebuilding the wall and steps where necessary and planting appropriate shrubs and trees near the sculpture. We haven’t heard whether we have been given this opportunity yet, but I hope Tesco shoppers will make sure they get a token with their shopping so that they can vote for us if we are chosen as one of three projects to benefit. Our Himalayan Balsam project last year was considered to be a great success, but will need following up again this year. It will be interesting to see whether the overall amount has been reduced when it starts to grow again, as it surely will. We will be looking for new volunteers to help with all this work so please give it your careful consideration and see if you are able to join us. We have a hardy band of conservation volunteers who turn out regularly, but few are young and we need some new blood if we are to continue to carry out the muchneeded work. Anyone who bought our 2017 Calendar will have easy access to the Tuesday working days; if you didn’t get one, please get in touch. Perhaps we could organise some weekend working if that was easier for some people. Please let me know. Talking of calendars, our first was a great success, having sold out before Christmas. We intend to repeat this next year and would welcome photos covering the whole year. Please send jpeg images to me if you think you have a good one – or more! I am also in the process of arranging themed walks, perhaps once a month, during the summer so look out for posters or add your name to our Friends list by emailing me if you would like a more direct contact. If you are already a Friend, please encourage others to join us. Finally, it will be our AGM on Monday evening 13 March, when we hope to have a speaker again. We are returning to Sprotbrough for it, but really hope Warmsworth residents will join us. We have been looking for a new Treasurer for a couple of years now and, as half the Don Gorge is in Warmsworth, would also welcome one or two residents from there. Again, please contact me if you are interested. Sprotbrough Neighbourhood Champions/ Sprotbrough & Cusworth Parish Council. Dear All, It gives me great pleasure to inform you that the group have recently collected and counted up just short of 700 survey forms, including 95 that were completed on line via our website. To say that we were totally amazed by such a positive response from yourselves and other Sprotbrough residents is indeed an understatement. Approximately 3,500 surveys were hand delivered through every letter box in Sprotbrough by our group members and volunteers from the Library. Based upon other local neighbourhood plan survey results, we were told to expect a percentage return in single figures. I don't mind telling you that secretly we were hoping for a 10% return, so to achieve a 20% return was truly fantastic and far exceeded our expectations. At our group meeting last week, we were joined by two colleagues from the Doncaster MBC Planning Office, who were present when we totted these numbers up. They were amazed by this figure too and stated that our percentage of returned questionnaires was unprecedented. How good is that! I'm sure you can imagine the wealth of information contained within these documents, which will go a long way to enabling us to draw up a plan that truly reflects the views of Sprotbrough residents. We wanted people to identify all of those good things about Sprotbrough that needed to be protected and those that weren't so good and needed to be addressed. The people of Sprotbrough have provided us with this information in abundance. Together with our consultant, we can now begin to develop a neighbourhood plan that adequately reflects your views. The planning process starts soon, and I will keep you all updated on a regular basis with our progress. On behalf of the group, thankyou so much for your support. Best Regards, Eric Mirfin Chair of the SNC

Competition Success! Congratulations to our ‘Green Team’ Eco Council members as they have won Doncaster’s Architecture Competition! During the Autumn term, Sheffield University students studying for their MA in Architecture visited school to work with our Eco Council as they developed their designs for a new eco-friendly building for Doncaster. We were very excited to receive a letter from Doncaster Civic Trust to share that we had won out of all the schools in Doncaster that entered and that our prize was £500! We are very proud of our children who worked together collaboratively to produce a detailed and creative design for an ecofriendly Children’s Museum. We intend to spend our prize money on resources to support the children in producing more fantastic design work. Many thanks to Miss Passant and Miss Walker for organising and supporting our entry in the competition with such enthusiasm. National Accreditation Success Congratulations to our enthusiastic Green Team, led by Miss Walker, as they have achieved the National Eco-Schools Bronze Award. This is a national award that recognises schools that actively involve pupils in developing ‘Digi-Prints’ Competition Winners We received a huge number of well designed entries for our ‘Digi-Prints’ competition, with children sharing the websites, games and apps they regularly use. As part of our E-Safety Week we discussed that every time we go online we leave our ‘digital footprint’ and therefore we must have regard to our online safety. We hope that our E-Safety Week and ‘digi prints’ display will help children to understand this important safety message. Well done to our winners, who are pictured below with their entries and prizes.

Well done to the Anti-Bullying Ambassadors! Our Anti-Bullying Ambassadors led a fantastic PowerPoint presentation and drama to encourage children to think about online safety. Their drama helped children to consider that although someone may appear friendly from their messages online, they may not be whom they appear to be and we need to be careful what personal information we choose to share online. Our assembly finished with the message that as long as children use the internet safely it is a fantastic way to learn and have fun. Internet Safety Magic Show The Magic Club of Great Britain entertained us with an interactive magic show, which combined great humour, mystifying magic tricks and powerful messages about the dangers of cyber bullying and how to keep safe online. At the end of the show Eugene asked everyone to raise their hand if they knew how to keep safe online! We look forward to sharing more school news next month. Best wishes, E.A. Crayton Head teacher

This little cutie is Scally, an 8 year old Lakeland Terrier. Scally is a lovely friendly girl who would make an easy pet for an active older person, as she loves her walks and cuddles. She would need to be the only pet in the home, but would be ok with older children. Scally is neutered and vaccinated. She is just one of several terriers in the Rescue at the moment- all of them are looking for new homes. For more information, please give Isle Rescue a call on 01427 728705

Do You Know How Safe Your Child is Online? The internet contains a lot of inappropriate material for children but the biggest threat of all is other
humans. The internet has become an integral part of everyday life for many people. Your children are growing up in a technological age, and many parents are feeling that they have been left behind. Technology is developing fast and it is not just computer’s that allow you access to the Internet. Many modern devices such as mobile phones, Nintendo’s Wii Games console, Sony’s PlayStation 3 and 4, PSP systems and X Box’s all have internet browsers for surfing the internet. Even if you do not have access to the internet at home it is always available through your local Library, cyber café, retail shops, work, school and fast food restaurants. The internet brings so many positives to our lives, however there is a darker side to it and we need to know how to protect our children.
FOUR Easy Steps To Keep Your Children Safe Online 1. Install software on their devices that can filter inappropriate material and allows you to what they are doing online.
monitor
2. Place a computer where you can see the screen. 3. Teach them not to give out personal information about themselves, family or friends. 4. Talk to them about being careful of friends online who might not be who they say they are and discourage them from meeting someone they have met online.

Action
for animals
There are a host of volunteer roles on offer at your local RSPCA animal centre – animal care, dog walking, van driving, maintenance, fund raising and fostering to name a few. The RSPCA South Yorkshire Animal Centre, Bawtry, has a skilled and experienced team who welcome volunteers to work alongside them. Volunteering is flexible to meet your available spare time and it is so rewarding to see the rescue animals find their forever homes. A popular volunteer role is fostering – the Centre pays vet fees and other expenses and it is very rewarding to give an animal that has suffered cruelty the love and care that restores their trust in humans. A very sociable and fun volunteer post is to join the Animal Centre’s fundraising team. It is the ultimate flexible job and can fit round your other commitments. Helping at the dog show and a few other events over the summer can make all the difference. If you cannot donate your time just now, why not have a clear out and donate unwanted clothes, toys, bedding, curtains, books and bric a brac (phone 01302 719790 for a collection); or make a mobile donation – text SYAC14 £5 to 70070. Finally you can support the rescue animals by using the new enlarged Centre Pet Store. Keep up to date with local RSPCA news at www.facebook.com/rscpadrb. The Centre is open six days a week 11am to 4pm (closed Wednesdays). For more information about volunteering, email info@rspcadrb.org.uk.

How Age UK Doncaster are reducing loneliness and social isolation through Circles for Independence in Later Life. Older people are particularly vulnerable to social isolation. There are many paths that lead to this; a friend moves away; a partner dies; the onset of a restrictive chronic illness or disability and before they know it, their social circle, the one they relied on for years, ceases to exist. Social isolation is a growing problem among older people both nationally and within Doncaster. Lacking social connections has a risk factor for early death that is comparable to smoking up to 15 cigarettes a day. Traditionally, communities organised themselves to support each other but in contemporary society the way we live and interact has changed. A community circle solves this by bringing people together who are already in that person’s life and by inviting new people who can contribute positively to an individual’s life. These contributions can be both practical and social. Age UK Doncaster has secured 5 years of funding from the Big Lottery Fund to set up Circles for Independence in Later Life. It is going to be a huge community effort and we are currently looking for volunteers who will dedicate a couple of hours each month to facilitate a person’s circle. These circles will enable older people to stay connected in their community and improve their quality of life. To find out more about our new initiative or to download our volunteer application pack visit our website www.ageuk.org.uk/doncaster or ring our connectors for a chat on 01302812345.
