Welcome to the March issue of

Sprotbrough Arrow Spring is in the air!! Oh how I love those words… This month’s Arrow has the latest local primary school news as well as some local spring fayres taking place in March. It’s great to see our community working together for the benefit of their village. We have another opportunity for everyone to get meet up as we celebrate Queen Elizabeth’s II Platinum Jubilee in the Summer, everyone is encouraged to hold a street part over the weekend, the celebrations start on Thursday 2nd June until Sunday 5th June. Feel free to share your plans and ideas in the Arrow. March is the month of celebrating that special person who plays a huge part in our lives. Whether it is your Mum, Aunt, Mother in law, Grand parent, past or present, we raise our glass and thank you all for your guidance, support and strength. Happy Mothers Day. The April issue deadline is Wednesday 16th March. The magazines will be delivered the last full weekend in March. Best wishes Michelle Sidebottom Tel: 07795 387937 michelle@arrowpublications.co.uk arrowpublications.co.uk

RICHMOND HILL PRIMARY ACADEMY As part of national story telling week all our year groups have been enjoying their class novels and recommending them to others via the Trust Twitter. Here is Y1’s recommendation ‘Paddington visits the Palace’. They have really enjoyed reading and taking part in role play as part of their topic on Monarchs. In Reception the children are loving thinking about bedtime routines as part of our starry night topic, especially cleaning our precious teeth!

We are excited in Year 4 as our litter picker kits and uniforms have arrived from Doncaster Council. Our Eco group can’t wait to make a difference to our school and home community. Our children will be taking part in a community litter pick event on the 24th of February as part of Sprotbrough Day of Action.

At Richmond Hill our Y6 pupils thoughtfully marked The Holocaust Memorial Day as part of their history and PSHE studies - honouring the victims, supporting the survivors and standing together against all forms of prejudice. Our Y5 pupils have pen pals in Taiwan and were so excited to receive their letters this week. They have been busy writing back finding out all about how they have been celebrating Chinese New Year. In Year 3 our children have been learning about how we are all connected using string to visually see this through their discussions in PSHE

(Personal, Social, Health & Economic Education). As part of our PSHE curriculum and to signal the start on Children’s Mental Health week on the 7th of February, Y6 had a session discussing activities to promote good mental health. They then went on to make these superb spinners with personalised activities on them.

DANUM PROBUS CLUB Since the last note about Danum Probus, which was published in Autumn last year, the Club has undergone some changes. The membership has now been extended so that not just men are eligible for membership, anybody who qualifies is. The other big change is that we are now meeting in a “new to us” venue, which is the Doncaster Sports Club in Bennethorpe, half a mile or so away form our old meeting place at the Golf Club. Danum Probus Club is a group of people who have retired or are semi-retired from their profession, business or other employment who want to maintain a social network with others who have similar interests. Danum Probus Club meets on the first and third Mondays of the month at Doncaster Sports Club, Bennethorpe, Doncaster starting at 10 am. The first meeting at the new venue was held on Monday 7 February. After everybody got settled in to their unfamiliar surroundings, and the formal business was completed, we enjoyed an informative presentation from Abigail Reid about domestic waste and re-cycling. Abi took us through the collection process, which featured the colours of the collecting containers, and how the various collections were sent on for re-use. The most difficult procedure appears to be the sorting of general waste from the black bins. Much of this finishes up at the joint recycling facility that Doncaster Barnsley and Rotherham Councils run at the old Manvers site. It was a really informative lecture and judging by the number of questions asked, well appreciated by Club members. In March the two Monday meetings will on the 7th and 21st of the month. Paul Adey will speak about the “British Motor Industry” on the 7th and Keith Lumley will be “Avoiding Disaster” on the 21st”. Between these two events at the Sports Club, we will meet at “Ye Olde Bell” at Barmby Moor on Thursday 17 March for our Spring Members and Guests Lunch at 12 noon for 12-30pm. Anyone who would like to come the meetings as a visitor to see what we do, with a view to joining if you like us, please contact David Allen (07395 128759) for more information or e-mail enquiries@danumprobus.co.uk

A positive start to the year for RSPCA Doncaster and Rotherham At the RSPCA Doncaster, Rotherham and District Branch, we have had a very positive start to the year with over 60 animals being adopted from our animal centre. This includes some of our longer stay residents – Piper and Lola – who we are so pleased have finally found their forever homes. Bubbles entered our care during the same week as Lola but unfortunately hasn’t found his forever home yet; he has been patiently waiting for his forever home for over 4 months. We often find that rabbits take longer to adopt, despite them being much smaller than dogs and cats. Rabbits are easy to bond with and make great additions to any home, especially one that wants the loyalty and comfort of a pet without being too chaotic or noisy. Bubbles is a bright bunny who loves hopping around to explore his surroundings, occasionally stopping to have a quick munch of his kale. He is used to being indoors but would appreciate access to a garden run once the weather gets warmer. Your home could be perfect for him if you already own a female rabbit as he would greatly benefit from the company. Toby is another one of our residents struggling to find his forever home. He’s a handsome boy, looking for a family he can call his own who will give him the love and attention that he deserves. Despite being a slightly older gent, his age does not slow him down; he loves a good run around and a quick ear scratch. When one of our animals become available for adoption, they are posted on our website (https://www.rspcadoncasterrotherham.org.uk/animalsfor-adoption) and Facebook page. If you are interested in adopting an animal, please follow the process that is explained on our website. There are many ways to help RSPCA Doncaster, Rotherham and District Branch with their mission to rehome and rehabilitate animals including volunteering, donating cash or goods, leaving a legacy sponsoring them through their Safe Haven programme and attending events. They have charity shops at Bawtry, Maltby, Rossington and Thorne as well as an eBay and Depop. At the Animal Centre, they rehome the animals in their care and have a pet supplies store on site and online for all your requirements. They also provide a pet cremation service and a memorial garden for your beloved pets. To donate £5, text ‘RSPCADRB’ to 70085. For further information: RSPCA Doncaster Rotherham Branch (charity no. 506259) is an independent charity dedicated to rehabilitating and re-homing animals that have suffered cruelty and neglect and have been rescued by the National RSPCA’s team of Inspectors (a separate charity). The Branch covers Doncaster, Rotherham and District. Media Contact: Mary McSherry mary@rspcadrb.org.uk Tel. 01302 719790

SPROTBROUGH VILLAGE HISTORY GROUP This new group continues to meet on the last Friday of each month, from 2- 4 pm, at St Mary’s Church Hall, Main Street, Sprotbrough, and the subscription is £2 each per meeting. Since we began meeting in August 2021, we have had an interesting programme. In October, Blaise Catford from the Doncaster Museum Service brought items from long ago that were used in the home and Trevor Miller also brought some from his collection, which reminded some of us how much things have changed on the home front in the intervening years.

Civic Mayor, Cllr Alan Jones with Cllr Cynthia Ransome;

In November, Giles Brearley came with the video he made of Sprotbrough Hall, which included an interview with Sabina Stirland, one of the last maids who worked there. This attracted a larger audience than usual and was thoroughly enjoyed by all. January saw our slightly extended New Year Party when a good number of members were joined by the Civic Mayor of Doncaster, Alan Jones, who has a strong attachment to Sprotbrough, and his chauffeur, David Milne. Alan made a short speech, thanking everyone for their participation in the Sprotbrough book and was later presented with a copy of this signed by all those who were present. Introductions were then made by everyone to the Mayor which prompted further discussion. A Bring and Share tea followed, with plenty for all thanks to those who were able to contribute. Trevor Miller provided background music and Cllr Glynn Bluff dropped in to say hello, when to his surprise he was drawn in to play a few games of Beetle, which caused quite a bit of merriment by those who had never played it before, as well as others who had played in their younger days, but had forgotten how to play. Altogether, a good time was had by all. Our next meeting will be on Friday 25 February, when we expect to have a film about the Plant Works when it was one of the biggest employers in Doncaster, and a short talk by Jim Jewell about the railways that ran around and through Sprotbrough. The March meeting will also be on Friday the 25th and details will be supplied on Facebook nearer the time. All are welcome regardless of address or age. Interest is the only requirement. Why not join us? Liz Reeve Email: sprotbroughvillagehistorygroup@gmail.com

We Need New Members! The Friends of Cusworth Park is a community group formed in 2006 to support and promote our historic Park. There is an interesting programme of talks, outings, events and fundraising activities. If you are more energetic, you can volunteer to help with practical work in the park. Since it was formed, the Friends have provided funding for an environmental education centre, nature trail and new paths as well as heritage varieties of fruit trees for the orchard and bird and bat boxes. We don’t just do gardening here we work with Doncaster Metropolitan Borough Council to care for many different aspects of Cusworth Park. You can get involved with as much or as little as you like! The Friends of Cusworth Park are always looking to expand their group and we welcome any like-minded people to come say hello and join us in our work. We meet on the first Wednesday of the month at 10:15am in the Grand Salon at Cusworth Hall. Coffee & tea are available, with a great chance to socialise and meet new people and old friends before introducing the speaker. We meet up elsewhere when on outings so best to check details by email or by contacting a committee member. We are very happy to welcome locally renowned poet Ian Parks as our guest speaker on the 2nd of March. His work is displayed in the new Doncaster Library and he runs several local poetry groups. He will be accompanied by Mick Jenkinson, his musical partner. Our speaker on Wednesday 6th April is Dave Fordham, his talk is entitled History of Local Collieries in the Doncaster Area. Thank you for reading and we hope to see you soon! Friends of Cusworth Park. More information about the Park can be found on the Council’s website. https://www.heritagedoncaster.org.uk/cusworth-hall/ For more information about the friends please contact us at: friendsofcusworthpark@gmail.com

Doncaster Ramblers Alkborough Flats Another grey and cold morning greeted four Ramblers in Winteringham, three of them old hands and Lorraine a newcomer who was used to the short programme and decided to step up a distance. Leaving Winteringham by the road named West End we walked into open fields and a strong southwest wind, passing the path of a long disused narrow gauge railway towards Alkborough. After a distance of about 3 miles a refreshment stop was taken in a small children’s playground to reduce the effects of the wind. After Elevenses we progressed past an old mill which ceased work in the 1920s. Carrying the next encounter was the Countess Close where the information board tells of a Roman embankment that has been restored. Another !00yds further on is the remains of a maze cut by Benedictine monks also by now there are good views of the river Trent. Pushing on along the top of the escarpment with further good views of the confluence of 3 rivers towards Whitton and lunch. After lunch the weather finally decided to turn foul and ceased any further photo opportunities as we walked along a flood bank on the Humber foreshore back to Winteringham where the is another tourist board explaining the history of Winteringham Haven. Despite the bad weather Lorraine, our guest, still managed to be jocular and vowed to return on another walk. Distance 9.5 miles: time 4hrs 10 mins. This walk appears on the Ramblers app. Stuart Twell Please visit our website https://www.doncasterramblers.org.uk/ for latest information, including future activity. Also follow us on Facebook https:// www.facebook.com/doncasterramblers/ for details of past Rambler outings. Remember while out observe the Countryside Code and give way to other walkers.
