Welcome to the March issue of The Sprotbrough Arrow. This month, the Arrow has a lot of information relating to community events. I have always been an active supporter of people who give up their time for the benefit of the place where they live and we are incredibly lucky to have such people in and around our villages who do just that. Whether it is Sprotbrough Community Library, the Knit and Natter group, the running of our parish halls and community centres, litter pick groups, cubs and scouts, coffee mornings, playgroups and many more, they all add great value and help improve our environment, both socially and physically. So if you have some time to spare and would like to get involved, go for it! Most people who volunteer, do so because it makes them feel they are adding value, which is a win win for everyone. If you have a community event you want to promote or are in need of volunteers, contact me and I will publish it in the April issue. The deadline for the April issue is Wednesday 18th March. The April issue will be distributed the weekend beginning Friday 27th March.
Happy Mother’s day to all who carry out this role. Michelle Sidebottom Tel: 07795 387937 michelle@arrowpublications.co.uk www.arrowpublications.co.uk

Thank you so much to everyone who has recently made donations. Doncaster Wheatsheaf Singers donated £1,280 from their Christmas Concert. Bentley Tesco (and Sue who runs the stall there) raised £1,810 through sale of books. Tickhill & District Lions Group donated £150. We received £757 from a funeral donation in lieu of flowers. Whether your contribution is large or small we are extremely grateful for your time and effort into raising funds on our behalf. Our thermometer on the website has now reached £57,300 at the time of writing (early February). We are taking registrations for our popular Midsummer Walk on Sunday, 17th May. It starts at 10am and is from Town Fields to Lakeside and return. The distance is approximately 6 miles, but can be reduced. It is all on public footpaths and is wheelchair and dog friendly. Entry is £6 and is free for disabled and children under the age of 12. Please contact Christine Whiteley, Tel. 01302 536472 or Email: musicline02@yahoo.co.uk. Christine is a member of Thorne Rural Lions who organise the walk for us. Come along and have fun with all the friendly walkers! However, we will let you know via social media and our website as soon as a date is arranged. In the meantime thank you all for your donations – we really do appreciate every penny.

Doncaster Rambler’s Gringley Beacon Roll For once there was the prospect of no mud, as 18 loyal Ramblers, including two welcome returners, gathered on the frost covered grass on Beacon Hill. Other than the mild chill it could have been the beginning of spring, blue sky, bright sun, only the Robin gave away we were still in Winter. From Beacon Hill Rob led us in single file west through the village passed the remains of the village cross, then southwest first across the busy A631, then via arable fields and green lanes to St Peter’s church in Clayworth, with its Traquair murals, which everyone admired during the coffee break. The return leg took us initially east on field tracks then north on the Trent Valley Way (including a short lap along Lovers Lane), bringing us safely back in under three hours. So a lovely morning ramble, ideal for those new to walking, retuning after a longer break, or anyone just wanting company and fresh air once a week. For more information about the Doncaster Ramblers and future activity please visit our Home Page and download full copy of our walk programme https://www.doncasterramblers.org.uk/walks/walks-programme-printed-version.htmlAnd follow us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/doncasterramblers/ where GPS Maps of many of our past walks can also be found

News from Sprotbrough Orchard Infant School The children at Orchard have really enjoyed learning about Space this half term. They have been busy learning facts about the Solar System, painting pictures of the planets and finding out about our own planet. They have also been amazing their parents with facts that they have learnt and have even taught them something new! As part of our home learning some children have been making some wonderful things at home such as planet models, rockets and space artwork. Children have also brought in their own Space books from home to share with their class. The children in Nursery have made moon rocks by mixing bicarbonate of soda, glitter, food colouring and a little bit of water. Then they put vinegar on them to create a reaction and they were amazed by what they saw! Continuing our space theme this half term, Sarah Belk from Active Fusion has been into school to deliver dance lessons to Reception children. The children had to imagine they were travelling in a rocket to the moon. They thought of ways in which they could portray a rocket taking off and how it might travel in different directions through Space. The children created some very imaginative routines which they performed to Space themed music.

The children in Year 1 carried out a Science investigation where they imagined they were astronauts travelling to Neptune. As Neptune is the coldest planet, the children had to decide which material would be suitable to make their space suit from. In an experiment, they looked at which materials kept water the warmest and they found that foil was the best conductor of heat because it is shiny. Year 2 have been looking at ways to look after our planet. The children have been talking about the ‘Three R’s’ (Reduce, Re-use and Recycle) and have designed posters to raise awareness of recycling. They are keen to put into practice at home what they have learnt about recycling at school.

I’m from Austria and I know I need to apply for Settled Status as the UK leaves the European Union. But I’m really confused about what documents I need in order to apply for me and my children. We’ve lived in England for six years and I’m worried that if we don’t apply before the end of the month, we might have to leave. You don’t need to apply by the end of the month your rights won’t change until 31 December 2020. However, you should apply as soon as you can in case of any delays. After the transition period ends on 31 December you might be asked to prove your right to do things like get a job or use a service like the NHS. Having your status sorted will make this more straightforward. To get settled status, you need evidence that you’ve lived in the UK for 6 months out of every 12 months for 5 years in a row. As you say you and your children have lived in the UK for six years, you should be eligible for this. In order to apply, you’ll need to have a few things. These include a passport or national ID card, a digital photo, your National Insurance number or proof of how long you've lived in the UK, a mobile number and an email address. If you’ve been working, you can find your National Insurance number on your pay slip. If not you can contact HM Revenue and Customs National Insurance Helpline on 0300 200 3500 to help find it. It may be easier to make your children’s application after you’ve made your own. This way you’ll be able to ‘link’ your child’s application to yours, using the application number you got when you applied for yourself. You can do this at any time after you’ve applied - you do not need to wait for a decision. And if your own application is successful, your child will get the same status as you. In order to apply on behalf of your children, you will need to have proof of your relationship - for example a birth certificate.

DANUM PROBUS CLUB danum probus.co.uk Danum Probus Club is an organisation for men who have retired or are semi-retired from their profession, business or other employment who want to maintain a social network with others who have similar interests. Danum Probus Club meets on the first and third Mondays of the month at Town Moor Golf Club, Bawtry Road, Belle Vue, Doncaster starting at 10 am. At this meeting we have a speaker whose subjects cover a wide variety of interests, the programme can be found on our website, www.danumprobus.co.uk. Ladies and guests are invited to the Club’s Spring and Autumn Lunches and also to the annual holiday which is usually in early June or thereabouts. Members also have their own lunches in mid summer and December. In the summer months the Crown Green Bowling Section play on the Armthorpe Community Centre greens. The Club held its AGM on Monday 20 January. As with all AGMs there were many items to discuss and decide, amongst which were the election of Officers and Committee for the forthcoming year. The Officers elected for the 2020 are: President Vice President Secretary Treasurer Elected Members Co-opted Members Almoner Programme Secretary Bowls Outings/Holidays Theatre
John Brown Alan Whitehall George Kirk John Bird Geoff Firth, Jeff Maddis on, John McWhan Ian Sampson John Hope Peter Oldale Chris Harris Vacant Gordon Fletcher
At the end of the AGM the Retiring President, George Kirk, handed over the “Chain of Office” to the incoming President John Brown, and then George was given a Past President’s Tie and a Badge. The new President thanked the members for entrusting him with the Office, and and thanked the former President and Officers for the work in the preceding year to ensure the survival of the Club.
He then said that during the forthcoming year he would like the Club to support the Doncaster charity Firefly, and to start this off there will be a retiring collection at the end of each meeting. The first meeting in February (3rd) featured a presentation by Brian Downs about the Doncaster REMAP Panel. REMAP is a voluntary organisation which supplies bespoke aids for people with disabilities. Brian said that most people who need aids such as wheelchairs and walking frames are supplied with them by the NHS, but there is a small proportion who need something a little different to improve their lives. In conjunction with medical professionals and the patients themselves, aids are designed and constructed in REMAP volunteers’ own premises at no cost to the patients. Brian illustrated the talk with many pictures of the aids REMAP had designed and constructed, and had brought along a few of the smaller ones for us to see directly. This talk really made us aware that good as the NHS is, it cannot deal with everything and how good it is the there are people such as those in REMAP ready to step in to help when needed. On March 2 our speaker is Mike Burdis “Catching a Spy”, and then on Monday 17 February John Slater will be giving us his “Reflections on a Prison Service Career”. Any interested men who would like to come to these meetings as a visitor to see what we do, with a view to joining if you like us, please call either Des Parks (01302 856188), George Kirk (07808191211) or Geoff Firth (01302 849734) for more information or come to a meeting and introduce yourself to the President or Secretary at the front table. More information is also available on the website (danumprobus.co.uk).
