Welcome to the March issue of the Sprotbrough Arrow I hope everyone who works in education or with children enjoyed the half term break. If you managed to get away, you will have noticed the slightly cheaper prices as most of the country were on holiday the week following our break. The same applies at Easter as we break up earlier than most other areas, so the first week should be a better price if you are looking to plan anything. Wherever you were that week, the sun shone for most of it so fingers crossed the same applies at Easter! For Easter, our local attractions have some exciting events to look forward to. Boston Park will host an Easter egg hunt and YWP’s latest addition to the Project Polar Reserve, Nobby the polar bear, has recently joined Victor, his grandson Pixcel and Nissan. All worth a visit. Early March we will celebrate Mother’s Day, I hope you enjoy a special day either spoiling that special lady or being spoiled, in some cases both! The deadline for the April issue is Wednesday 16th March. The April Arrow will be delivered the last weekend in March. Happy Easter Michelle Sidebottom Website www.arrowpublications.co.uk E-mail michelle@arrowpublications.co.uk Mobile 07795 387937

DRY-STONE WALLERS RAISE MONEY FOR YORKSHIRE AIR AMBULANCE Little did they think, when demonstrating the new skills obtained by working with the Peak Park Rangers, at Cusworth Country Fair some five years ago, that they would still be building such a wall today, as dry-stone walling is a craft rarely used in the Doncaster area. But a few of the members of the Don Gorge Community Group Conservation Volunteers jumped at the chance to renew a wall that was badly in need of repair near Cusworth using this technique and have formed a sub-group which is still going strong. The wall, some 335 meters long, is part of the boundary between Cusworth and Sprotbrough and the relationship between the owners, Jim Brough and his daughter, Kelly, has developed in such a way that further training and advice has been provided for them.
Working entirely as volunteers, they have received no payment for their work, but Jim and Kelly have made regular donations to charities on their behalf, as well as giving Christmas gifts as a thank you for their efforts. In 2015, ÂŁ500 was donated to the Yorkshire Air Ambulance Service and this has been their charity of choice once again. At their latest session, Mrs Anne Swann was on hand to receive their cheque, which will certainly be put to good use.

Thinking inside the Box
Sprotbrough artist Terry Chipp has been putting people in boxes for his latest exhibition at Cast theatre in Doncaster. Terry has been a regular visitor to Cast even before it opened three years ago. During that time he has made many drawings of actors and dancers in rehearsal, some of which have been used to illustrate the programmes for the shows. The main part of this exhibition though is a series of paintings of people Terry has met at the theatre. They include writers, actors, musicians, choreographers and even the director of the theatre herself, Kully Thiarai – all of them in boxes! Why would Terry paint people in boxes? On one hand it gives him better control of the light falling on the sitter but there are deeper meanings too. Putting someone ‘in a box’ usually categorises or pigeon -holes them. In Terry’s paintings the figures are often in shadow suggesting that there is much more to the person than we can immediately see and some are already beginning to break out of their boxes. The exhibition is in the entrance foyer at Cast in Waterdale and runs from 1st March to 30th April 2016. A smaller display of Terry’s box paintings can be seen at Sprotbrough Library from their Coffee Morning on 27th February through early March. Further afield, Terry’s paintings are part of a group exhibition to be held at the headquarters of the EU Delegation in Skopje, Macedonia in May. Terry can be contacted through Facebook at ‘Terry Chipp Fine Art Painting’, his website www.terrychipp.co.uk or visited, by appointment on 07941983798, at his studio in the old art college at Church View in Doncaster where he hosts a weekly art group.

School News from
Copley Junior School
Intrepid Arctic Explorers As part of their project ‘Frozen Kingdom’, our intrepid Year 6 Arctic explorers ventured to the Yorkshire Wildlife Park to meet Victor the polar bear. In the welcome warmth of the school room, Year 6 discovered more about evolution from fossils and texts. ‘Young Voices’ Our choir enjoyed performing at the ‘Young Voices’ Concert at Sheffield Arena, together with school choirs from across Doncaster, Rotherham and South Yorkshire. This gave children a wonderful opportunity to sing as part of a large choir with a range of vocalists. National E Safety Week As part of national E Safety Week, our School Council led an assembly on the importance of being SMART when using the internet. They reminded children that when messaging someone online, you can’t see the person you are communicating with, so great care must be taken.

Creative Home Learning Our imaginative Year 3 children have enjoyed creating their own mythical monsters, with some very imaginative designs and models. Competition Success The Children’s University launched an Art competition for all Doncaster schools. We are proud to share that Matilda in Year 3 was the overall winner for Doncaster! Well done to our Architecture Club, who designed and made a scale model of a new building for Doncaster. Their design for a viewing tower for the Yorkshire Wildlife Park was very creative and beautifully made. We came 3rd out of all Doncaster schools and received a generous voucher for Art materials – as well as a prize for each of our Architecture Club finalists! Many thanks to Miss Passant, who supported the children in this after school club. We look forward to sharing more school news next month. Best wishes, E.A. Crayton Head teacher

Denton & Nickels and Goals Doncaster are hosting a nostalgic five-a-side Euro ‘96 tournament to help raise money for The Children’s Hospital Charity. The tournament, on Monday February 29th at Goals Doncaster (Wheatley Hall Road), will feature 16 teams representing the original Euro ’96 line-up and will follow the format of the UEFA European Championships. Funds raised on the night will contribute to the MAKE IT BETTER appeal to continue the refurbishment project at The Children’s Hospital in Sheffield.

JODIE GRANT
Woman's British FIS Indoors and Outdoors Duals Moguls Ski Champion lands sponsorship deal with Airkings Trampoline Park, Doncaster. Jodie age 15 from Old Cantley is very excited to be offered a sponsorship deal with Airkings. Airkings opened in October 2015 and is fast becoming a popular place for everyone of all ages to have fun and to exercise at the same time. Jodie says “It is the ideal place for me to practice my skills on the trampoline before I put down my tricks on the mountains. The airbag is an ideal platform to perfect my landing position, not only is it fun but it is great exercise and a good way of keeping fit in preparation for the long days on the ski slope”. “I am getting ready for 4 weeks training followed by a week of competition (The Brits) in Laax, Switzerland in early April. Coming back from injury I have had nearly 8 weeks off so I need to concentrate on my fitness levels and technical tricks”. Jodie is also training with the Moguls Team based in the Netherlands with her coach Mr Tjeerd Terpstra. Mr Terpstra says “Jodie has a great future in winter sports. I am based in the Netherlands and will monitor Jodie’s technical and physical training through video and one or two visits to the UK in the summer. I am looking forward to working with Jodie next season taking her to competitions in Europe”. Airkings says “We want to play a part in Jodie's journey and think the offer of sponsorship to use the park will be a perfect way to enhance her skills. It will be great to sponsor a local girl and to watch her progression in the years to come”.
