We are currently restructuring our website to bring it up to date,. I will share more with you next month but hoping it will be even more informative and easier to navigate on all smart devices. If anyone wishes to advertise on our website—please get in touch. The deadline for the April issue is Wednesday 20th March The April issue will be distributed the last weekend in March.

From dogs to doggy paddle... Could you help a person with sight loss to go swimming? Do you love swimming? Do you have a few hours of time to spare? The charity Guide Dogs is looking for a volunteer living in the Doncaster area, who would be willing to help a person with sight loss in their local community to go swimming. Provided by Guide Dogs, My Guide is a free and flexible service that helps people with sight loss to build confidence and take part in social and leisure activities, using a trained volunteer as a sighted guide. A dedicated person works closely with each partnership to identify aspirations and set goals, with support and training provided throughout. My Guide volunteer Karen says: “Giving just a few hours of time can help a person with sight loss to achieve their goals and enable them to continue taking part in the things that they love. I have been volunteering as a My Guide now for a year and I enjoy that I can make a difference to somebody’s life in a small, but positive way. By supporting somebody local to you, you can help them to regain their independence and rebuild their lifestyle. It is also a great way of making new friends and taking part in fun activities.” If you live in the Doncaster area and think you can help, please get in touch. You will need to be 18 years of age and willing to undergo training. If you would like more information about the service or volunteering, contact Elizabeth Felgate at the Nottingham office on: 0345 143 0221 or email: Elizabeth.Felgate@guidedogs.org.uk

Support in place for Doncaster residents Deputy Mayor of Doncaster, Cllr Glyn Jones, has further strengthened the council’s approach to supporting residents in financial difficulty. Working with local Citizens Advice, Cllr Jones has signed an agreed protocol which provides practical steps to support those who are struggling to pay their council tax. “We have a duty to all residents to collect council tax in a fair way,” said Cllr Jones. “However, we do recognise that there are people who are struggling to pay their bills and are falling down an ever deeper hole of spiralling debt.” Cllr Jones continued: “We have always been committed to helping residents in these very difficult situations and our continued work with Citizens Advice allows us to reach out to those who need our help from the start.” The protocol has been developed by Citizens Advice, along with support from the Local Government Association. It requires that local authorities work with enforcement and advice agencies to help people pay their council tax bills while accessing debt advice. Doncaster Council is the first local authority in South Yorkshire to formally sign up to this. Karen Bothamley, Chief Executive at Citizens Advice Doncaster Borough, explains further: “We recognise that councils are under huge pressures to collect council tax due to ever increasing budget restraints. However, when we work with the council to identify those who need support from an early stage it helps to prevent further charges and worries further down the line. “Doncaster Council already follows all the good practice which is outlined in the protocol. By formally signing up to this, it reassures residents that we are working together to achieve the best outcomes for them,” said Karen. Anyone who is struggling to pay their council tax should contact the council as soon as possible on 01302 734454 and seek help direct from Citizens Advice on 01302 846745 or 0344 4994137. Those on means-tested benefits or a low income may be entitled to Council Tax Reduction. For more information or to apply go to www.doncaster.gov.uk/services/ council-tax-benefits/what-is-localcouncil-tax-reduction Citizens Advice Doncaster Borough is a registered charity number 1174228 providing free, confidential, independent and impartial advice. Richmond Hill Primary School News from February 2019
Amazing Amazon Experience! Year 2 and ambassadors prepared to be amazed at the new spectacular Amazon site in Doncaster this month. We engaged in four active tours to see how our online purchases are processed & delivered so efficiently every day! We were blown away with the sophisticated computer system and its incredible capabilities! Health & safety procedures were of paramount importance whilst we observed the workings of state of the art conveyors and areas of work. We also had the opportunity to carefully operate remote control forklift trucks, sort recyclable items and then make full use of the Amazon 'selfie station.' What a visit! Thank you Adam and Amazon for this amazing opportunity! Our sports teams have had an amazing half term and we are so proud of all their achievements, they have been a real credit to the school! Mrs Nixon has provided a rundown of all their fabulous work over the last few weeks… County Finals Y4 Football Team Our Y4 football Team won the Doncaster finals last term, which earned them a place in the prestigious South Yorkshire Football County Finals at The Dorothy Hyman Sports Centre! The children played eight matches against other finalists from South Yorkshire and came 6th place in their category. The boys played superb football skills; showing off good attacking, defending and goalie skills. Their team spirit was amazing and fun was had by all.

Y2 Cricket Our Y2 cricket team took part in a competition at Dearne Valley Leisure Centre, where they were split in to two groups: The Richmond Legends and The Richmond Rockets. They took part in a variety of cricket games that included batting, bowling, and throwing skills. They each went round a circuit collecting points for each skill displayed and were absolutely brilliant at each game, demonstrating their amazing skills. The organisers of the competition even noted what talented and brilliantly behaved children were representing our school. Thirteen teams took part in this competition; The Richmond Rockets came 4th place with 1,187 points and The Richmond Legends came 1st place with 1,747. WOW! Outstanding results! KS2 Gymnastics This fabulous gymnastic team have given up their dinner times for the last four weeks to prepare for their competition. They have practiced a complex floor routine that consisted of balances, jumps, rolls and cartwheels. They also learnt to vault with a jump dismount in either a tuck or straight air body shape. The gymnastic team was split into 4 groups, and took on 30 other teams from the Doncaster area, earning 13th, 11th, 9th and 8th place. I’m sure you would agree that these are magnificent results! Y6 Athletic Team Out Y6 Athletics team competed in the Doncaster Athletic Semi-Finals at Dearne Valley Leisure Centre a few weeks ago, taking part in a variety of track and field competitions that comprised of running, jumping, and throwing events. The team went above & beyond a challenge – they were like superheroes for our school and really tried their best in every event, which was amazing to watch. Our children competed against 7 other schools and came 2nd place, narrowly missing first place by a couple of points, which earned them a place in the Doncaster Finals! This magnificent team recently took part in the Doncaster Athletic Finals and, once again, made a tremendous effort to do their best. All of the children managed to get their personal best in every event and, out of every school in the Doncaster area, Richmond Hill managed to earn 8th place. An outstanding result!

TOTAL PRESSURE CLEANING The Complete Exterior Cleaning Service Doncaster Pathfinders Walking Club set off for the Peak District on Sunday 10th February and enjoyed three lovely walks around Bakewell. A group of us completed around 11 miles, setting off from the Chatsworth estate, through the pretty village of Baslow and after popping into the pub at Hassop we continued on our way to finish in Bakewell. A second group walked 8 miles, taking in great views of the Peak District around Rowsley and Haddon Hall, also finishing in Bakewell. A gentle 6 mile walk was completed by the third group who also started on the Chatsworth estate, and after spending time Baslow joined the rest of us in Bakewell for the return journey home. We were lucky with the weather and had a great time catching up with friends. If you would like to join our friendly walking club, our next outing will be on 10th March when we are going up into North Yorkshire or if you prefer to come along in April we will be walking part of the Wolds Way on the 7th. School News from Copley Junior School Star Medics First Aid Training Well done to our first group of fifteen children who have attended an after school training course to learn first aid and CPR skills. The children worked really hard to practise their skills and all have achieved their Star Medics First Aid Certificate. Congratulations! Spotlight on Safeguarding Star Award Well done to our Anti-Bullying Ambassadors, as their outstanding work to promote anti-bullying and their commitment to sharing best practice across schools in Doncaster has been recognised by Doncaster Council's Safeguarding Team. We are very proud to be one of the first three schools in Doncaster to receive this award. Internet Safety Magic Show The Magic Club of Great Britain entertained us with an interactive magic show, which combined great humour, mystifying magic tricks and powerful messages about the dangers of cyber bullying and how to keep safe online. Well done to our Anti-Bullying Ambassadors who have led an assembly to share their child-friendly e-safety leaflet and they also launched a competition to design an esafety poster.

Eco School Success Well done to our Eco Council, as they have achieved a national accreditation to mark their success in driving environmental initiatives in school. The Woodland Trust 'Green Tree School' Award rewards schools for completing environmental projects and encouraging outdoor learning. Our projects, including promoting active travel, recycling, reducing the use of paper with the 'Christmas Wish Tree' initiative, our partnership work with the Woodland Trust and reducing our carbon footprint have enabled us to achieve the Silver Award. We are now working towards the Gold Award! Well done to the Cross Country Team! Many congratulations to our Year 3-6 cross country teams who competed in the county finals following their earlier success at the Doncaster Championships. On a decidedly chilly afternoon, our intrepid teams competed at the South Yorkshire Finals at Cannon Hall against finalists from across Doncaster, Barnsley, Rotherham and Sheffield. This was a great opportunity for our pupils to compete at an elite event. We are so proud of all the children as they demonstrated great effort, stamina, enthusiasm and sporting behaviour. Well done to everyone!
We look forward to sharing more school news next month. Best Wishes, E.A. Crayton Head teacher
