WARMSWORTH LADIES’ CLUB Warmsworth Ladies’ Club recently celebrated its 50th Anniversary with a dinner held at The Crown at Barnburgh and with two of its original members present at the celebrations. The Club was established on 25 March 1965, recruiting members by posting leaflets through doors and by word of mouth. Since then it has remained an independent club, with no affiliations, run by members for members. Originally the weekly meetings were held at Warmsworth Mill Lane School but now meets at Warmsworth Community Centre still keeping to its original formula of weekly meetings based on speakers, outings, social and charity fundraising evenings with time for refreshments and a chat. In the 1960s the WEA Local History Group produced two ‘histories’ of Sprotbrough and an attempt was made to continue this process some time ago, but never really got off the ground. We decided to try again with some leadership from the Adult, Family and Community Learning Service last year and have just recently started meeting again. The meetings are held at Sprotbrough Library on alternate Monday evenings, 6 – 8 pm. The last meeting was on Monday 30 March and every two weeks from that date. It is appreciated that Mondays might not suit everyone, but alternative arrangements could be made if this was the case. We have decided we should have a project and so will try to put together a calendar for 2016. If we can gather suitable photographs together, we would like to reproduce ‘before and after’ scenes of interesting people or places as a reminder of who or what was around in the 1950s or 60s, eg businesses, railways, roads, rivers, buildings, etc. They obviously need to be good quality photographs. We feel that some of the old Sprotbrough families probably have such photographs in their own archives which we hope we might be allowed to copy; they would, of course, be returned when a copy had been made. Alternatively, it might be possible for owners to scan and email them to us with the necessary details and information attached. A large number of people expressed an interest in joining when the group was first attempted, but unfortunately we do not have access to names or emails. If anyone would still like to be involved, please leave your name, address, telephone number and email with Lynette Chip at the library and we will get back in touch with you. Sprotbrough Local History Group

School News from

Copley Junior School World Book Day Well done to everyone who made World Book Day such a special occasion in school. Children and staff all came to school dressed as their favourite book character and there was a lovely atmosphere in school as children enjoyed sharing their costumes and favourite books. Many thanks to the volunteers from Sprotbrough Library who prepared and led a very interesting and engaging reading workshop for each year group during the day. Comic Relief 2015 We raised £215 for Comic Relief by having a fun day in school and making our faces funny. We look forward to sharing more school news next month. Best wishes, E.A. Orchard Infant School News

At the end of the Spring term, a group of children from our successful after school dance club, ‘Strictly Come Orchard’, were invited to join a Dance Festival at our neighbouring school, Richmond Hill. Needless to say, the children were very excited and thoroughly enjoyed the experience! Orchard would like to take this opportunity to thank Craig Collins, who has been coming into school to support the teaching of PE over the past couple of years. As part of his work with ‘Active Fusion’ the children have enjoyed both their gymnastics and games sessions and the staff have valued his input and experience. Craig's support with teaching and learning in PE helped Orchard to achieve the Gold level in the Youth Sport Trust Quality Mark - an award which we are all very proud of. Team Orchard would like to wish Craig well in his new ventures at Highwoods Primary School in Mexborough. The end of term was also marked with an Easter disco and a special Easter egg hunt which involved finding lollipop sticks that had been hidden in the school grounds. The children were able to exchange these for a bag of mini eggs. Although there were no official sightings of the Easter bunny, evidence suggests a visit had been made! We hope you all enjoyed the Easter break and we look forward to updating you on our new ventures during the Summer term!

Richmond Hill Primary Academy HERO! We were highly delighted to welcome Marc Griffiths into school recently with his unique puppet assembly HERO – Help Everyone Respect Others - WW1 animal stories encouraging children to respect themselves and others. Marc is regarded as one of the world’s leading inspirational ventriloquists and has won national awards as well as performing on the 2012 season of Britain’s Got Talent. VIKINGS The Vikings explored the northern islands and coasts of the North Atlantic, ventured south to North Africa and east to Russia, Constantinople, and the Middle East. How extraordinary that they even managed to stop off at Richmond Hill Primary Academy to tell us all about life as a Viking!
