Welcome to the May issue of The Sprotbrough Arrow.
As the Arrow goes to print, we are basking in heat not seen in April since 1949. What a treat, let’s hope it continues! Wow, I am thinking about how quickly time goes by as we approach the Summer then realise, the last Tour De Yorkshire was 2 years ago! We lined up on Bawtry Road and watched the men race past towards Bennethorpe. It was really exciting and I am looking forward to this year’s event on 3rd and 4th May. Another event to look forward to is the Sprotbrough Scouts Gala and Road Race which will be held on 17th June. There is a ‘Party in the Park’ the evening before, so get your dancing shoes and trainers ready for a busy weekend. The deadline for the June issue will be Wednesday 16th May. The June Arrow will be delivered by the last weekend in May.
Best wishes Michelle Sidebottom Tel: 01302 534256 / 07795 387937 email: michelle@arrowpublications.co.uk www.arrowpublications.co.uk

Community News JUST FRIENDS
is an informal group of friends who like to meet for lunch and do projects to support others.
We would like to thank knitters who give their time and skills to make twiddle muffs for dementia sufferers and small knitted teddy bears. The picture I have used here is a particularly pretty one , we receive many others equally special in different ways. Sometimes we are asked for a particular colour or one with brighter or darker colours, we try to oblige if we have the right colour wools! We often get a call to collect twiddle muffs and teddies but don’t always get names and contact information so that we can thank them directly. So this is a BIG THANK YOU to all of those kind people whose work is very much appreciated. If you have any knitting for collection or would like to support us, please ring Carol on 01302 530833

School News from Copley Junior School Year 4 Express Event – Romans It was lovely to see so many parents/carers and relatives at our ‘I am Warrior’ express event. The children worked very hard to put together such a varied and dramatic presentation. We saw descriptive soliloquies performed, a dramatic battle between Boudicca and her Celts and the Romans, Roman battle formations, a gladiator fight, fabulous project work and even Roman board games!
Dearne Valley Arts Festival We entered a number of art pieces from our talented pupils and were pleased that they were selected for the exhibition of art. Well done to Isabelle S, who came 2nd in the ‘8 years and under’ section. Gymnastics Success Well done to members of our gymnastics team, who have done so well to compete at county level by reaching the Yorkshire Championships. The children's performance was excellent and we are very proud to share they came 2nd for the whole of Yorkshire (and only 0.4 marks behind the winners)!

Sporty Fun In the week of Sports Relief, we planned lots of additional sporty activities to promote engagement and enjoyment of P.E. and Games. Children took part in sessions led by external specialists for playground games and skipping, street dance, basketball and military exercises. We look forward to sharing more school news next month. Best wishes, E.A. Crayton Head teacher

Sprotbrough Orchard Infant School This half term our topic is Sport. We are enjoying finding out about different types of sports and competitions. The children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 visited the Keepmoat Stadium, home to Doncaster Rovers football team, after the Easter break. Children enjoyed a guided tour of the home and away changing rooms, walking around the pitch and down the tunnel and of course the highlight was meeting Donny Dog! Staff would like to extend thanks to Year 1 parent, Mr Mawson, for helping to organise an engaging and fun trip. As part of our support for Sports Relief, children came to school wearing sports clothes on Friday 23rd March. Children from Nursery through to Year 2 took part in a whole school challenge of collecting steps on a daily basis. In total the whole school managed 982,000 steps in the last week of term. This was the equivalent of walking to Everest and Kilimanjaro. Our donations from this event totalled £333, well done Orchard! Orchard Quiz Night was a huge success and we managed to raise enough money to transform our outdoor area for the Year 1 children in the Summer Term. A wonderful evening with nearly 90 attending, fun was had by all. Thank you to Kerry Pye and Caroline Wilson Perkins for giving so much of their time to organise the event and to everyone for their generosity and support on the night. Well done to all the teams, including the teachers and congratulations to team ‘Look at what you could’ve won’ who took the title and won the trophy and prizes.

Richmond Hill Primary School News A Grimm Day for Y6! Year 6 stepped into the magical world of Grimm & co. last term, visiting a strange apothecary in Rotherham. After hearing the apothecary owner complain about the lack of stories in his store, Y6 were taken on a fantastical journey in creative writing! The day began with a creative writing session in which the pupils came together to write a story, with professional illustrators busily bringing the pupil’s characters to life in real time, and ended with a trip down a real-life beanstalk back to the shop floor. Each pupil had been asked to write an individual ending to the story they had created and, at the end of the beanstalk, they were given a printed copy of the story – complete with their own ending and professional illustrations! Everyone had a magical day and we can’t wait to visit them again.
Y5 Novel Study We are well under way with our novel study in Year 5, looking at different historical eras through fiction. Last term, pupils read ‘The Silver Sword’ by Ian Serraillier and everyone enjoyed the historical aspect to the book. This term we will be reading ‘Street Child’ by Berlie Doherty, which is also an historical novel, though it is set in the Victorian era. We will be visiting Cusworth Hall in May to enhance the children’s reading experience with a Victorian day. We’re Buzzing About Spelling! Three of our pupils attended the annual Inter-school Spelling Bee Final at Stocksbridge Junior School in Sheffield recently and did amazingly well! Well done to our three finalists, who did themselves and the school proud!

Year 3 Book Launch Year 3 had a Wizzbuppfizzer time recently, trying to discover which new novel we are going study this term, deciphering clues and completing activities throughout the school day. Pupils took the opportunity of making up their own giants, developing new ‘words’ and definitions for them, constructed their own dream catchers and designed their own dreams ready to act out in PE. Overall, they had a fanswishparnp of a day! Have you managed to guess our new book yet? Year 1 visits Northern Ireland As part of Year 1’s Geography topic, we have been celebrating our British Values and extending our knowledge of the countries that make up the United Kingdom. Over the past few weeks we have ‘visited’ Scotland, where we met the Loch Ness Monster. • • Wallpaper Hanging During our time in Wales Specialist we created our own • • Emulsion & All Welsh dragon whilst Paintwork listening to ‘Delilah’ by Tom Jones! Our most • • Clean & Tidy Work recent stop was across the • • Reliable & Trustworthy Irish Sea and into Northern • • Quality Work at Ireland – we spent our Reasonable Prices time there learning traditional Irish dancing, before exploring and asking questions about the famous ocean liner; the grand For a Free Titanic. The final stop in our ‘Round the United Kingdom trip’ will take us to the capital, ‘England’.

Get Out & Get Fit!
Sprotbrough Community Library runs weekly Light Exercise classes for the over 50s and it's proved very popular indeed! With two classes on the go to keep up with demand, and an excellent tutor to deliver the class, these sessions enable people who can only undertake light to moderate exercise to join in and get fit....and at a low cost of just £2.50 per class. The sessions involve chair based exercises, sometimes to music, and the great thing is that you can go at your own pace! No need to try and keep up, plus, there is no getting up and down off the floor, no kneeling or bending over and no jumping up and down. The age range in the classes range from people in their late fifties through to early eighties! And best of all, it's good fun and a friendly atmosphere. Why not come and join in! Contact the library to find out more details.
