CLEAN FOR THE QUEEN 9 April 2016 It was a great disappointment that our Clean for the Queen event in the Don Gorge at Lower Sprotbrough and Warmsworth had to be cancelled on 5 March 2016, but the continuous heavy rain made conditions on the riverside unsafe, whilst adding to the amount of rubbish being brought down the river and deposited on the banks. Fortunately, we were able to rearrange the clean up for Saturday 9 April, when thirty-three wonderful people turned up to help us fill 150 bags with plastic and glass bottles, aluminium cans and other miscellaneous rubbish, as the photos show. I am told this amounted to 2.88 tons of waste. The number of complimentary comments and emails we have received following the event have been amazing so I can only say thank you once again to all those who helped. The Don Gorge Conservation Volunteers meet every fortnight to work along the River Don between Conisbrough Viaduct and the A1(M) motorway bridge, doing what they can to maintain the safety of all and to ensure a pleasurable experience for the many people who visit the area. April is especially significant this year with the Tour de Yorkshire coming through the Gorge on the 30th and we are trying to do everything we can to make sure the area is clean and pleasant for the many spectators expected. It is doubly disappointing, therefore, that our small event for the Tour de Yorkshire, planned to take place on the track from the hairpin bend down towards the old village of Levitt Hagg and the Fish and Eel Pass, has had to be cancelled following a change of heart by DMBC. We are told this is because it is not a safe environment. Consequently, there will be no display of countryside crafts, no refreshments and no public toilets in the Gorge on 30 April.
We are always looking for new volunteers willing to help us on a regular basis and enquiries would be welcomed by Liz Reeve: lizreeve@dongorgecommunitygroup.com

School News from Copley Junior School Year 5 Residential Visit to Robinwood The Year 5 residential visit to Robinwood has been action packed and a great success. The children took part in such a varied range of activities, including canoeing, Knights’ Challenge, the giant swing, the pirhana pool challenge, raft building, crate challenge, the Dungeon of Doom, archery, zip wire, caving and climbing, not to mention rocket building! We have covered the entirety of the National Curriculum expectations for outdoor and adventurous activity and the visit has been superb for children’s personal development. We have seen qualities of team work, independence, resilience, decision making and risk taking all flourish. We are really proud of the children’s superb behaviour during the visit and their support of each other. Well done Year 5! Sporty Week We have some very fit and energetic pupils at Copley Junior School! Thank you to our Sports Council, who organised many additional sports activities for each class during the week of Sports Relief, including Skipping workshops, Street Dance, Martial Arts, a Cadet Club day and our sponsored walk. We look forward to sharing more school news next month. Best wishes, E.A. Crayton Head teacher

What will Sprotbrough look like in the future? Surely, Sprotbrough will benefit from the People who live here working together to let the Council know what we want Sprotbrough to look like in the future? Housing, Schools, Shops, Road Safety - they affect us all! We need to put together a "Neighbourhood Plan" A group of called the ‘Sprotbrough Neighbourhood Champions’ are working with the Parish Council to listen to your views on what the Neighbourhood Plan should contain, including what you feel is good about the village, what’s not so good and what your recommendations are for the future. When completed you will have the opportunity to vote on whether or not to adopt this plan- so it’s important that it reflects your views and the views of other Sprotbrough people. To know more about how you can influence the content of the Neighbourhood Plan, watch out for our leaflet dropping through your door, our adverts in the Sprotbrough Arrow and the Parish Council magazine. The group are developing their own website too, which will soon allow them to provide you with updates on the groups progress, and other important details. www.sprotbroughneighbourhoodchampions.co.uk Important! Are you aware of the plans for new Residential Development n Sprotbrough over the next 15 years? The Map shows those areas of Land in Sprotbrough (shown red) currently being offered up to DMBC by Land Owners for residential development Doncaster Council will be making a decision on the 18th of June on which plots will be developed in all areas of Doncaster including Sprotbrough The ‘Sprotbrough Neighbourhood Champions’ are working with the Parish Council to influence Doncaster Councils thinking on these developments. We need your input and support to ensure that the views of Sprotbrough residents are reflected. We will be attending future Public events in Sprotbrough so come and talk to us in person, give us a chance to explain to you in more detail about who we are, what we’re doing and what we want to achieve on behalf of everybody who lives here. Please! The Neighbourhood Plan is designed to cover the whole of Sprotbrough, therefore we want to be in a position soon where we have residents from all over Sprotbrough represented on our group. If you’re interested, please feel free to speak to us in person or contact us at enmirfin@gmail.com for more information.

The Tour De Yorkshire
Is coming To Sprotbrough!!! After rallying from villagers to change the route of the tour de Yorkshire, organisers agreed to move the route to come right through the heart of the village. Now, to celebrate and mark the occasion a small group of people from the village are organising a large community day to raise funds for amenities within the village itself. The two areas for the community day will be New Lane Park, which will have fun fair rides and attractions along with a classic car show. There will also be food stalls and various different craft stalls. A punch and Judy show with face painting will keep the kids entertained all day long. Outside Sprotbrough Country club there will be a band stage with 6 bands playing throughout the day. A hog and chicken roast with an outside bar for people to eat and drink to the bands playing. There will also be craft stalls, a fire engine to entertain kids and the only indoor large screen in Sprotbrough showing all the action. When the race comes past the country club on main street scouts, cubs and brownies will also line the streets saluting and leading the crowds getting behind the race. The action starts at half 11 with the women’s race coming through the village and plenty to keep everyone entertained until the men’s race comes through at approximately 4.30-4.4.5. Proceeds raised from the day will go in to the Sprotbrough Community fund that will help pay for amenities in the village such as park regeneration, Christmas lights and other projects. Keep up to date with all the goings on by following Sprotbrough Tour De Yorkshire on facebook.

Sprotbrough Orchard Infant School What an exciting start to this new term we have had here at Orchard! We kicked started the summer term with a day’s visit to Whirlow Hall Farm in Sheffield. There, the children we able to learn about farm animals such as pigs, sheep, bulls, chickens and horses. They even had a chance to see new lambs being born and pet one only a few days old! We learned about the number of baby’s sheep and pigs have and what happens when there aren’t enough teats to go around! We also helped the Little Red Hen to make her bread when her unkind friends wouldn’t. This experience has provided lots of exciting opportunities for follow up work linked to our centre of interest for this half term. Edward Hardy came into school on Friday 8th April to show the children Hazel the ferret. He talked at length about keeping her on the farm to manage pests such as rabbits and rats. Some children even managed to stroke Hazel (who was very excitable!) and asked some super questions. At the end of this month, Sprotbrough will welcome the Tour de Yorkshire and our children are getting very excited at the opportunity to see the race first hand. We are busy getting creative and producing a piece of large artwork in the school grounds to hopefully be seen from the television helicopter. We hope to publish photographs of the day in the next issue!
