Community News South Yorkshire Police Male Voice Choir In October 1925 the Doncaster County Borough Police formed a Male Voice Choir to perform at the Doncater Grand Theatre in order to raise money to buy boots for the less well off children in the Borough. Over time the choir's name changed due to force amalgamations and today the choir is known as The South Yorkshire Police Male Voice Choir, probably the oldest police male voice choir in the uk (94 yrs) with the same charitable ethos.

Doncaster Rambler’s - A Trio of Marvels Every now and again we Ramblers are given a challenge, basically meaning scrambling up on all fours, and sliding down (possibly) on your bottom. So it was this Tuesday, for the first of our monthly more strenuous walks, Dianne had planned a super walk that took us up six separate hills, including some iconic landmarks. Having crossed into the edge of Staffordshire, twenty-five of us met in the square in Longnor and set off up the valley of the R.Manifold headwaters before turning north through the hamlet of Hollinsclough and up to Booth Farm. Our first, and most impressive challenge loomed ahead of us - Chrome Hill. (1200 ft) This "Mini - Matterhorn" involved a little scrambling but we all enjoyed our lunches at the top in hazy sunshine with expansive views in every direction. Our next challenge was Parkhouse Hill (1400 ft) where we were given the choice of three routes, varying in difficulty. From here we made our way over Hitter Hill (1100 ft) to a short pub stop at the quaintly named "Quiet Woman" in Earl Sterndale. Two more hills (950 ft) remained before we returned to Longnor, having enjoyed a wonderful day's walking in some of the best scenery that the Peak District has to offer. Despite the difficulty (and we don’t do this every day) we all came away with a sense of achievement. Parkhouse Hill and Chrome Hill are amongst some of the most distinct and recognisable hills in the Upper Dove Valley of the Peak District, located just north of the River Dove which forms the Staffordshire/Derbyshire border. Commonly known as the ‘Dragon’s Back’, the rugged curve of Chrome Hill is said to resemble the ‘plates’ along the spine of a stegosaurus dinosaur. The views from the top are especially breathtaking! For more information about the Doncaster Ramblers and future activity please visit our Home Page and download full copy of our walk programme https://www.doncasterramblers.org.uk/walks/walksprogramme-printed-version.html And follow us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/doncasterramblers/ where GPS Maps of many of our past walks can also be found

DANUM PROBUS CLUB
Danum Probus Club is an organisation for men who have retired or are semi-retired from their profession, business or other employment who want to maintain a social network with others who have similar interests. Danum Probus Club meets on the first and third Mondays of the month at Town Moor Golf Club, Bawtry Road, Belle Vue, Doncaster starting at 10 am. We welcomed Dick Venables on March 18 whose presentation, “The Disaster Detective” made one pause for thought. In his career in the Police Service, Dick was involved in the recovery and identification of bodies from crashes, terrorist atrocities and natural disasters. These incidents included the Selby Rail Disaster, the London Bombings in 2007 and the Boxing Day tsunami in the Far East. Dick has also been involved in standardising procedures and latterly of training people for this harrowing work. This was an educational if sometimes dour presentation given by somebody with expertise and respect for the bereaved families and their loved ones remains. On Thursday 21 March the Members and guests attended the Spring Ladies’ Luncheon at Ye Olde Bell and Barnby Dun. Then on April I, Jeff Jacklin “Used to be a Football Referee but he’s Better Now”. This was an entertaining look at refereeing in the Sunday Morning lower leagues. The presentation also featured video of incidents in professional games where the referee was punched, tripped up, pushed over and chased round the field by all the players from one side. This was a not to miss presentation. At the following meeting, April 15, Tony Barber recounted the history of the St lager Classic Horse Race. On May 6 Tony Dodsworth is “Following the Inca Trail to Machu Pichu”, and on May 20 Neville Williams will feature the “Yorkshire Wildlife Park”. Any interested men who would like to come to these meeting as a visitor to see what we do, with a view to joining if you like us, please call either Des Parks (01302 856188), George Kirk (07808191211) or Geoff Firth (01302 849734) for more information..

Our congratulations to Yvonne Woodcock, one of our Trustees, who was recently awarded Freedom of the Borough. She has worked tirelessly over the years in many capacities and is still on the go every day! We held our annual Mile of Coins in April and raised £1,102 which included £674 raised by Paul Stainton, Mike Hogg and Paul's grandson James Canham on their static bikes. They cycled a total of 295 miles! Our very grateful thanks to them for their support and to Frenchgate Centre and also to the many people who gave donations. All money goes towards our latest prostate cancer appeal for a biopsy machine for DRI. It is not too late to register for our Midsummer Walk which is on Sunday, 19th May. Please contact Christine Whiteley on 01302 536472 or by Email: musicline02@yahoo.co.uk. Price is £6 per person and is free for disabled and children under 12. Refreshments are available, there will be a tombola, so come along and join in the fun! If you would like to join our friendly team of volunteers for one-off events and/or to be a committee member please do get in touch with us. We are at 22 Wood Street, Doncaster DN1 3LW (entrance by the side of Kerry Gough Florists), 2nd floor, Room 209. Tel. 01302 325029. Email: info@dcdt.co.uk. Website: dcdt.co.uk. Have you thought about raising money for us at marathons or other sponsored events around the country? We will put your photos and write-up on our website.

Doncaster Pathfinders Walking Club were out on Sunday 7th April, walking part of the Wolds Way. Our A group set off from the Humber Bridge Visitor Centre and although it was a bit misty we had a great view of the bridge. We followed the path through to North Ferriby and then took a slight detour to have a drink at the Green Dragon in Welton. This pub is famous as being the place where Dick Turpin was arrested in 1739! After a refreshing pint we rejoined the Wolds Way, following it to Brantingham where the coach was waiting. A great 11 mile walk in lovely countryside. This month we didn't have a C walk so our B walk was a relatively easy 7 mile circular walk starting and finishing in Brantingham. The group also managed a break at the Green Dragon before completing the return route back to the coach. The Spring weather was kind to us and everyone had an enjoyable day. We are a friendly group of like-minded people who enjoy a walk in the beautiful local countryside. If you would like to join us, our next walk is on 5th May when we are going to the Monsal Trail area in the Peak District or if you can't make it, on 2nd June we are off to the Ladybower Reservoir. School News from Copley Junior School International Schools Award
We are very proud to share that Copley Junior has been awarded a national accreditation, the Foundation Level of the International School Award. Our application against the national criteria for the International School Award was externally assessed by the British Council. Our assessor commented: “Copley Junior School is clearly committed to developing an international dimension in its curriculum, as is demonstrated on its excellent international page on its website. You have demonstrated an excellent start in promoting the international dimension across your school and highlighting the benefits of learning in a global context. Your commitment to extending and embedding internationalism in your curriculum is a valuable aspect of your school ethos. A pen pal exchange will have given your pupils a real purpose to their French learning. Congratulations, and good luck in your continuing international journey!” We look forward to continuing to develop our international links and our valued link with St Joseph in Carquefou, Nantes. Pictured below are Copley and St Joseph pupils exchanging Easter cards and letters.

Board Games Fun As part of their ‘Alchemy Island’ creative learning project, Year 5 children designed and made board games, writing clear and succinct rules. The hall was filled with laughter and challenge as parents/carers and grandparents were invited to play the games. Super work Year 5! Don Valley Arts Festival We entered a number of art pieces from our talented pupils and were pleased that they were selected for the exhibition of art. Well done to our two winners: Lacey who was the winner of the 8 years and under competition Gracie D who was placed 2nd for the 9-13 age category Pictured is a very proud Lacey with her shield, presented to her by judge Michael Fowler, landscape and seascape artist.

Civic Mayor Award for the Mini Life Coaches We are very proud to share that our Year 6 Mini Life Coaches have been awarded the Civic Mayor’s ‘Make a Difference School Award’, out of 93 nominations from schools across Doncaster. Our Year 6 Mini Life Coaches provide peer mentoring across school and they have been very successful in leading lunchtime workshops on a variety of themes: meditation and relaxation; mindfulness colouring; outdoor teamwork fun and creative crafts. The feedback from the children who have attended (65% of our school community, 130 children) shows what great impact the workshops have had. Please visit the Mini Life Coaches website page to find out more at: http://www.copley.doncaster.sch.uk/our-community/ mini-life-coaches We were very proud to attend the celebration event at the Mansion House and to see our award being presented to one of our Mini Life Coaches by the Civic Mayor, Councillor Majid Khan. We look forward to sharing more school news next month. Best wishes, E.A. Crayton Head teacher
