Here we are well into Autumn and we hope you are managing to keep fit and warm despite the colder weather. We have been in talks with consultants at Doncaster Royal Infirmary regarding our skin cancer appeal and we are thrilled to report ‘Memory Tree will return to Frenchgate Centre’ that we have the funds to purchase a vital piece of equipment they need. It is a three-dimensional camera which will enable students in Doncaster (and potentially all over the world) to learn a new basal cell carcinoma technique via electronic communication. The technique involves excising the basal cell carcinoma and achieving a primary closure of the wound without the need for skin grafting. Doncaster is a centre of excellence for this procedure. In the whole country there are only three centres working at this level. The department would also like to buy smaller pieces of equipment for their work with skin cancers, so your donations will still help in this very worthwhile cause. We will let you know more about this in future publications. We are excited to confirm that, as mentioned previously, we can hold our Memory Tree event in Frenchgate Centre on the run-up to Christmas. This is where you can purchase a Christmas tree ornament in memory of a loved one. It will start on Monday, 29th November and will finish on Saturday, 18th December. Provisional times will be from 10am to 3pm each day. We have recently been informed by staff at Frenchgate Centre that many people were extremely disappointed last year when there was no Memory Tree. This was due to the fact that, because of Covid-19, shops were only allowed to open as a last minute decision by our Government and rules were still very strict as to social contact. We were as disappointed as you, but like so many other organisations, we were faced by tough restrictions. However, we are back this year and hope you will come along to have a chat and see the variety of items we have for sale, some favourites and some new ones which we hope you will like. In the meantime if you would like to get in touch with us our details are: 22 Wood Street, Doncaster DN1 3LW (entrance by the side of Kerry Gough Florists), second floor (lift available), Room 209. Tel. 01302 325029. Email: info@dcdt.co.uk. Website: dcdt.co.uk. Please do keep supporting us. We strive to raise money to purchase cancer-related equipment for our local hospitals which in turn hopefully helps improve the lives of local people and beyond. Our very grateful thanks to you all.

Doncaster Rambler’s A longer walk from Bentley At the very end of Finkle Street there is a two-way finger post which is where today’s eight-mile ramble began. Joining us from far and wide were seven regulars, plus a newcomer, Jason, whose interest was sparked by seeing footpath signs while out on his motorbike! Facing the post the route begins through a squeeze stile on the right and heads south passed the sewage works, where at a finger post a helpful notice tells us the surrounding footpaths are all blocked! We ignore it and continues along Fowler Bridge Road a generously wide shingle path, leading to the east coast main line, which is crossed with care. At the next fingerpost we cross a stile left and march the two mile long embankment. Looking back across the fields, the impressive flood defence engineering feat which during construction closed this path for months. Buffeted by light winds, unsurprising as we were 19 feet above sea level, we refused to take shelter and carried on towards Long Sandall. Following the path left right left we head north through some dense vegetation to reach Fordstead Lane where two low walls provide a perch for our lunch break. Continuing on, after a forced twenty minutes stop we turned left just before the entrance to the electricity substation. Evidence of power is everywhere overhead, as we wonder along Royalty Lane pondering what on earth is growing in surrounding fields. A wildflower meadow gone to seed perhaps? No time to ponder as we hit Forstead Lane and a ¼ mile of road walking, on which a 40ton Juggernaut stopped to let US pass, clearly the driver is a Rambler! It wasn’t long before we were safely back in footpath territory, heading south towards Almholme, when shock horror at White House Farm, the path was lost, and we had to detour around the hamlet to reach Common Lane then onwards to Arksey Common Lane, familiar to those who did, an earlier Ramblers walk from Bentley Community Woodland. Just before entering Arksey village there is a path on the left, Hemp Pits Road (see red on map) which is an alternative route home. Instead we went for the urban return headed into the village were we took a left along the main road for ¾ mile for making a left and right to reach Finkle Street. Was it an adventure? Who knows, but at eight miles exceptionally long for a local walk. Next week back to five Please visit our website https:// www.doncasterramblers.org.uk/ for latest information, including future activity. Also follow us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/doncasterramblers/ for details of past Rambler outings. Remember while out observe the Countryside Code and give way to other walkers.

News from Copley Junior School We have had a fantastic half term at Copley!
Young Shakespeare Company Children in Year 5 and 6 thoroughly enjoyed the interactive performance of ‘Romeo and Juliet’ led by the Young Shakespeare Company. This provided children with a really inspiring and engaging first experience of Shakespeare. We certainly have some budding young actors at Copley! Year 4 Visit to Murton Park We were delighted to be able to take our Year 4 pupils to Murton Park to experience a day in the life of the Vikings. Throughout the day the children got to be craftsmen, shaping and decorating their own individual pots and farmers, preparing the land to ensure the crops would grow. They ground the flour for bread-making and collected wood, and they also learned how to be powerful Viking guards.

Year 3 Travelled Back in Time to Ancient Greece To celebrate their learning journey, Year 3 came to school in their togas and headdresses to live the life of an Ancient Greek community for the day. Unfortunately, they didn’t have the typical weather that Greece is famous for but they did take part in a mini Olympic games, explored democracy and enjoyed some traditional Greek dancing. Look at their authentic Greek pots!
Harvest Festival Joined in school by Reverend Amanda, pupils celebrated the gift of food with our annual Harvest Festival. There was singing, poetry and great dramatic performances in addition to an overwhelming amount of donations. Such wonderful community spirit! We look forward to sharing more school news next month. Best wishes, Miss Blades-Baker Head teacher

Out with Old, In with the New! Having achieved our aim in writing a book of Sprotbrough, including an oral history by the older members of the village, those who contributed decided they wanted to continue meeting and so we have now disbanded the Oral History Group as such and started a new venture: the SPROTBROUGH VILLAGE HISTORY GROUP. This name doesn’t mean that only people who live or have lived in the village in the past can join, far from it. We had a variety of contributions to the book from abroad and, in return, copies winged their way to at least Australia and Canada. So, it means that anyone who has links to the village, wherever they live – at home or abroad, or has information relating to Sprotbrough as a whole, is welcome. Houses were built and people moved into the Sprotbrough Road area following the sale of the estate, and many newcomers arrived in the village itself; they all have their part to play in the continuing history of Sprotbrough and we would like to hear from you. We continue to meet on the last Friday of each month, from 2- 4 pm, at St Mary’s Church Hall, Main Street, Sprotbrough, and the subscription is £2 each per meeting to cover the cost of room hire. Our first proper meeting was held on 27 August, when people were asked to bring a friend and any photographs they had that might be of interest. We were especially thrilled that two ‘old’ villagers turned up as visitors: Ann Watson, who provided the poem at the end of the book; and Trish Lyth, Rev’d John Lyth’s daughter. We also had one other new member. On 24 September, we talked about ‘Games we used to Play’, a great number being suggested that children today probably know nothing about as they are less able to play out in the street in gangs, such as: snobs; marbles; tiddly winks; Tag; two ball; Trainspotting; collecting car numbers; What Time is it Mr Wolf; group skipping; conkers; and kick a can – played in the middle of the crossroads at the Ivanhoe! It’s a pity children couldn’t join us. On 29 October, if you are reading this in time, a lady from the museum service is bringing some things from their collection of items that were in regular use in the home, at work or in the tool-shed, but which have now been updated out of all recognition. On 26 November, Giles Brearley has agreed to come to show and talk about the video he made with one of the last maids of Sprotbrough Hall. There will be no December meeting, but on 28 January we will have our New Year Party and hope to play some games. Why not join us? Liz Reeve

Sprotbrough Orchard Infant School It has been a busy first half term back at Sprotbrough Orchard Infant School and all the children have settled really well into school life. It has been lovely to finally welcome a few visitors back into school. Reverend Amanda led an assembly about harvest time and we enjoyed singing along with her and her guitar. Mr Banks (our Chair of Governors) along with other members of the governors spent time in each class and were very impressed with all the learning that was taking place. In Key Stage 1 our centre of interest has been ‘The Great Outdoors’. On Wednesday 22nd September the children in Year One went on their very first visit! The children were very excited to visit Squirrel Wood and thoroughly enjoyed the experience Nina and Claire (the leaders) provided. To link in with the children’s science learning they had to find different leaves and identify the tree they were from. They also labelled the different parts of a tree and created their own artwork using natural materials. Many children’s favourite part of the day was making popcorn on the fire and getting to taste it! Next half term the children in Key Stage 1 will have a history focus and be finding out about life in the Victorian times. The children in Nursery and Reception will be learning about different celebrations.
