It’s great to see all the fun and learning taking place in our schools. After such a challenging year, they continue to provide an anchor of support to young people whilst juggling restrictions and keeping children, staff and parents safe. I sincerely hope we can continue to keep our schools open. As life remains difficult and uncertain for many local businesses, particularly the hospitality sector, I will do my very best to support them by purchasing gift vouchers for birthday and Christmas presents. We have some wonderful local pubs, wine bars, cafes and restaurants, they need us now more than ever and it would be so sad to lose any of them. If you are stuck for a present idea this year, please bear them in mind. What ever this virus throws at us, whatever restrictions are enforced, we can only do our best to support one another and keep safe. Sending my love and best wishes to everyone. The deadline for the December issue is Wednesday 18th November. The December issue will be distributed the weekend commencing 27th November. Keep safe everyone. Community News Sprotbrough will have a tree! A new cut tall tree, kindly donated by Brittains Beverages, will be erected on the green and covered in lights. The lights on the tree at the top of Boat Lane will also be on, as will others. Latest regulations forbid gatherings of large groups, so there’s no event; Just enjoy seeing the lights as you walk past! Just to remind you, we’ve obtained permission to hang stars on the trees around the green. This is where you can help. Please support Sprotbrough Lights, buy a star and pop along and hang it up from 16th November. There’s no charge, only the cost of a star or two for you! We can’t be there, but the stars can! Let’s go for it and see how many we, as a community, can put up and make this a memorable year in a good way? By the way, if you are unable to hang your star, place it in the box at Ottos and we’ll do it for you!

Tickhill Music Society Regrettably, and after much consideration, we have decided to cancel our November and December concerts. However, we are trying to remain positive and hope that our season of classical music will resume in January.

Sprotbrough Orchard Infant School

During autumn term one, we have been focusing heavily on settling foundation stage children back into routines. They have continued to explore their provision and familiarise themselves with their teachers and class. As part of their learning, children have sorted conkers, leaves and sticks by their colour, shape and size. They have also spent time in construction areas to develop fine motor skills. Miss Belk from Active Fusion has been in school too to work with children across all year groups on developing dance skills. Specifically, she has spent lots of time during the first few weeks focussing on developing skills around listening to, and following carefully, given instructions. Children have then had opportunity to build on this by developing a sequence of movements to a given stimulus in Year Two. In just a few weeks, children have developed their own sequence of movements to a given stimulus and put it to a music, keeping time to the beat. What fantastic results! Miss Belk will continue to work with all classes over the course of this academic year and we would like to thank her for her hard work and efforts with all children so far. Miss Belk has also trained up a group of mini leaders in Year One and Year Two and children have enjoyed taking responsibility to lead their own games during play times and during outdoor learning sessions. In Years One and Two, children have been looking at signs of autumn and discussing harvest. As part of this learning, they have made apple crumbles and apple pies respectively, including preparation of the fruit from the tree, mixing ingredients to make pastry and developing skills such as rolling and cutting. Our mini -chefs did a fabulous job! We are lucky here at Orchard Infant School to enjoy such fantastic grounds and the children have relished the experience of spreading acorns, conkers and chestnuts more recently for the local wildlife to eat. They’re really busy collecting their food in the run up to winter and we’re excited to see lots more signs of change over the coming months.

Doncaster Rambler’s

Carers Walk, Cusworth Hall On this day out for carers and cared -for folk a big group of about 40 people arrived at the car park for 10.30. They had three options, one being to spend time around the Hall to chat and meet old friends, the second was to do a short walk down to the lake and through the shrubbery led by Angela, the third was to do a 4 mile walk led by me. The weather forecast, which was for rain from about 11.00 onwards, was an accurate, but fortunately nothing more than a light drizzle fell from the skies while we were walking. Seven people chose the 4 mile walk, ranging in age from a nineteen year old to a ninety year old! We left the car park and walked down through the wood to the bottom of the park before heading towards and under the motorway and on to Sprotbrough. After skirting Sprotbrough we took a delightful path through a strip of woods, crossing over, rather than under, the motorway this time and on to the Trans Pennine Trail. A couple of the group needed support to climb down some very wonky steps down to the TPT, but from then on the walking was easy. After about a mile of the TPT we took a track to the left and into Cusworth Park and up to the Hall, where coffees, teas and lunches were happily consumed. Thanks to the Stepping Out organisation for making this day out possible, and, of course to Julie for organising the Doncaster Carers. School News from Copley Junior School

Young Shakespeare Company – Children in Year 5 and 6 thoroughly enjoyed class workshop sessions of ‘Macbeth’ led by the Young Shakespeare Company. This provided children with a really inspiring and engaging first experience of Shakespeare. We certainly have some budding young actors at Copley! Year 4 Visit to Murton Park - We were delighted to be able to take our Year 4 pupils to Murton Park to experience a day in the life of the Vikings. Throughout the day the children got to be craftsmen, shaping and decorating their own individual pots and farmers, preparing the land to ensure the crops would grow. They ground the flour for bread-making and collected wood, and they also learned how to be powerful Viking guards. Harvest Assembly for WaterAid Children from each class contributed to our online Harvest Assembly with different presentations on the theme of water, including ‘Why is water so important?’, ‘The beauty of water’, ‘How can we get energy from water?’, ‘Save our oceans’, ‘Why is hand washing so important?’ and ‘Zeitu and Zahra’s walk for water’.

We learned about the fantastic work of WaterAid. So far, the charity has reached 27 million people with clean water, 27 million with decent toilets and 20 million people with good hygiene. Thank you to everyone who sent in a voluntary donation to support the work of WaterAid. On our Harvest Assembly day children dressed in non-uniform/blue for our theme of ‘Water’. Well done everyone!

We look forward to sharing more school news next month.

Best wishes, E.A. Crayton Head teacher
