Thank you to everyone who has contributed to the November issue of The Sprotbrough Arrow. Its great to see what is happening in our local primary schools, the new curriculum is proving to be very interactive which is evident in all the photographs in this month’s issue. I know my 9 year old is really enjoying his subject, the Battle of Hastings, and the new approach to a broader learning experience. You should receive your magazine by Halloween, I hope you have a spooktacular evening, this event is becoming an absolute favourite for youngsters and will be a great end to the half term holiday. If you are looking for ideas over the holiday period, both Yorkshire Wildlife Park and Boston Park Tea rooms are offering some fun seasonal activities. If you are interested in finding out more about advertising in this magazine, please contact me on the details below, the Sprotbrough Arrow is distributed to 4800 homes in Sprotbrough and Warmsworth Sarah Cattell Event Planning and Design every month. Deadline for the December issue is Wednesday 18th November. The December Arrow will be delivered the last weekend in November.

Community News A Life Changed Through a Life Shared Denis and Linda Birkin from Conisbrough are Carers supporting a young man named Ben, who is on the autistic spectrum, through the provision of a pioneering service called Shared Lives. The couple, who also have children of their own, have looked after Ben within their home since he was a baby – providing foster care up to the age of 18, following which they wanted to ensure Ben could remain in the family environment they had created for him. To do this Denis and Linda became Shared Lives Carers, under a scheme delivered by Doncaster charity The Avalon Group. Shared Lives offers adults with a wide range of disabilities and mental health issues the chance to become part of an extended family by living in the home of a trained carer. For those participating in the scheme this can be either on a long or short term basis, with options for day breaks and respite relief. For Ben it means the ability to live a fulfilled life surrounded by all the things he loves and all the things he needs. Even the detached bungalow in which the family lives, was purchased to allow Ben to play music and sing as loud as he likes! He is also a valued, active member of the community, playing drums and singing at his local church alongside Denis who plays trumpet and Linda who plays guitar, and has a great passion for baking and art. This is made possible by a life lived alongside people who care for him in the same way any family would. Denis and Linda have provided a home and a level of support that means he has flourished in ways which a residential care setting may not have been able to achieve. The Birkins were recognised for their level of care at the Pride of Doncaster Awards 2014, receiving the ‘Carers of the Year’ trophy. Linda said: "The only way support can be this good, is for it to happen in a family setting, within a strong family unit.” Denis added “It’s so rewarding to do what we’re doing with Ben. It’s got to be better than just building another residential home and hoping for results. ‘The Avalon Group have been a really great help to us, delivering excellent quality training with commitment and dedication. Shared Lives really has to be the way forward." The Avalon Group are currently looking to recruit new Shared Lives Carers throughout Doncaster and the surrounding areas. If you would like to find out more, or apply to become a Carer please contact Alison on

School News from
Copley Junior School Balloon Releas Thank you to children, Year 7 pupils, parents/carers, relatives, staff and governors for attending our balloon release in memory of Mr Siddall. The children and staff wrote personal messages on the balloon labels and we released 300 helium balloons. Our collection raised £520 for the Eve Merton Trust, a local charity that grants wishes for people with cancer. Thank you so much to everyone for your kindness and support. We were incredibly moved to hear that Mr Siddall has been honoured posthumously as ‘Doncaster Teacher of the Year’ at the annual ‘Pride of Doncaster’ Awards, in recognition of his impact as a teacher. ‘Young Shakespeare Company’ Visit The ‘Young Shakespeare Company’ visited Copley Junior once again and gave a very engaging performance of ‘Romeo and Juliet.’ The performance enabled children in Years 5 and 6 to consider the motivation of the characters and was an excellent introduction to the children’s study of Shakespeare. The Mighty Pharaoh Visits Year 5 As part of their project on the Pharaohs, the Mighty Pharaoh visited Year 5 (or is it Mr Sayles’ version of ‘dress down Friday’?) Homework Superstars! Children have responded wonderfully to our recent project homework. We have seen some very creative homework including musical instruments made out of vegetables for our ‘Vegetable Orchestra’, Viking longboats, homemade Viking jewellery, model World War II Anderson shelters, baking using rationed foods, Tutankhamun death masks, writing and paintings about Ancient Egypt and research about and models of the pyramids, to name just a few. Please visit our school website at www.copley.doncaster.sch.uk and look at ‘Home Learning’ in the ‘Learning’ section for lots more photographs of the high quality work produced by the children. We look forward to sharing more school news next month. Best wishes, E.A. Crayton Head teacher

Sprotbrough Orchard Infant School News
Children from Birch class, Chestnut class, Oak class and Maple class went to High Melton Forest school on Thursday 17th September and had lots of fun creating houses for fairies! They trampled through the squelchy mud down to the forest and got suitably dirty whilst getting to grips with nature. Subsequent work from this hands on trip has included making model habitats for woodland animals, clay pinecones, woodland animal classification and additional outdoor learning opportunities within our school grounds. Willow class and Rowan class have also enjoyed conducting some exciting celery experiments to see where water goes within a plant once it has been absorbed. Reception classes (Oak and Maple) had the opportunity to enter a fitness competition on Thursday 8th October, led by Active Fusion. They had a carousel of fitness activities to complete and their times recorded to compete amongst other schools in the Doncaster area. Good luck to them! The staff at Orchard held the annual Macmillan coffee morning on 25th September to raise essential funds for a very good cause. Our 'Bake Off' saw lots of fabulous creations and some very satisfied tummies! We look forward to updating you on events in next month's issue.

Richmond Hill Primary Academy Roald Dahl Competition Winner A Phizz-whizzing idea for our Roald Dahl competition from Frankie Link in Year 1, has earned him first prize - a copy of the BFG to read and enjoy! Frankie wrote a description of a dinner lady whose hair changed colour depending on what meal was being served. Whoopsy whiffing!
Anne Frank Exhibition Year 6 pupils recently visited the Anne Frank Exhibition at Doncaster Museum. Pupils were given the opportunity to debate this serious issue with thoughts, ideas and opinions flowing freely.
Harvest Festival Our pupils are busy preparing Harvest boxes for their food donations to be sent to the Doncaster Food Bank charity. Alongside this, our Key Stage 2 pupils have been asked to design a recipe and donate the ingredients needed to make their dish. The management at the Newton Arms on Sprotbrough Road have kindly agreed to judge the KS2 competition and also generously agreed to headline the winning recipe on their special’s board.
