Looking for something to do over winter?
Why not pop down to Sprotbrough Community Library and browse our large selection of books to read or perhaps join one of our regular interest groups? We're also looking for people to start their own interest group at the library for such as gardening, cooking, knitting, etc. We have courses running throughout the year too, such as Philosophy, Family History, Baby Sign (Baby Bunnies), languages, yoga, IT and other new topics starting in January 2017, as well as things for toddlers & kids including our weekly storytime for under 5's, a new Chatterbooks group (for older kids 8yrs+), plus we have new activity tables at the library where you can bring your kids along to play with colours, crafts, play-doh and jigsaws. To keep up-to-date with everything going off at the library simply pop in and pick up our monthly activity leaflet or visit our website, where you can also sign up to receive our monthly e-newsletter. We're also on Facebook too! Don't forget, we also have free computer use, free internet access & free WiFi, as well as photocopier, printing & scanning facilities for a small charge. PS The library is still looking for volunteers to help out, either behind the counter or with other things such as running an interest group, setting up displays, creating artwork, etc. There's lots to do! So if you have a couple of hours spare each week please contact us for an informal chat to find out more.

This gorgeous boy is Ted, a stunning Lurcher who is around 2-3 years old. Ted is a lovely, gentle, laid-back boy who is great around people, and would love a sofa to snooze on. He is ok with most other dogs, but not cats or small furries. He would be best in a home with older children. Ted is neutered, fully vaccinated and microchipped. If you are interested in meeting Ted, please give Isle Rescue a call on 01427 728705.

Richmond Hill Primary Academy Sam & Sammie visit Richmond Hill We recently welcomed the larger than life characters, Sam and Sammie to Richmond Hill. They came to show our pupils how it’s cool to go to school and why attending school regularly is important. Making a difference Richmond Hill’s Ambassadors attended the Diana Award Ambassador Training event held at Campsmount Academy. The event was a chance for pupils from schools in our area to come together and exchange ideas and share good practice. They gained practical ideas and received top tips on how to stop bullying and ensure everyone feels safe and happy in school. Welcome to Reception Our new Reception children have now settled into full-time school.

Sprotbrough Orchard News What an exciting time October has been for our staff and children. At the end of September the school staff held our annual Macmillan Coffee Morning to raise vital funds for a charity close to our hearts. We baked delicious treats to sell and participated in games to raise a grand total of £135.00. Sarah Belk from Active Fusion has been involved in training some of our Year Two children to become ‘mini leaders’ where they can lead small games at playtimes and lunchtimes. The selected children who completed their training achieved a certificate to show their success. As a result of this training, the older children in our school are now implementing the games they have learned and making playtimes fun and exciting for all. Additionally, the children in our Foundation Stage participated in Virtual Fusion, where the Year Two ‘mini leaders’ helped and supported their younger peers to achieve success. The staff here at Orchard would like to extend their thanks to Sarah for her work with the school. To tie in with our centre of interest work, Year One have made an apple crumble and Year Two have made a vegetable soup. All the children were actively involved in the preparation of the ingredients to make their dishes and were very eager to taste them when we were finished! On Friday 21st October we held our Harvest Festival assembly. Over the last few weeks the children have been collecting and bringing into school their donations of food which will be greatly received by M25.

School News from Copley Junior School Harvest Festival – Thank You! Our theme for our Harvest Service this year was ‘Looking after our World’s Resources’. Well done to the different year groups for their research and presentations about recycling, wave energy and the importance of saving water, wind energy and sustainability, with Year 6 pupils below telling us about the ‘Dig for Victory’ campaign and food rationing during World War II. Thank you to parents/carers and relatives for your generous support of our Harvest Festival. Our donations of fresh food, tinned and packaged goods and toiletries filled the tables at St Mary’s Church as you can see in the photograph, as well as being displayed in many other areas of the church! All donations were given to two local charities, M25 (supporting homeless people) and Doncaster Foodbank. Year 5 Visit to Weston Park As part of their creative learning project on the ‘Pharaohs’, Year 5 visited Weston Park Museum in Sheffield. As well as touring the museum, children took part in a workshop to find out about the mummification process! Did you know that the Egyptians used to bury their slaves alive alongside their mummified bodies so that they would have a slave in the afterlife? This didn’t last long because the slaves would run away every time someone in the family fell ill. This is why they began making a ‘shabti’ (a small model of a slave) to be buried alongside their mummified remains. All of the children decided that making a ‘shabti’ was much kinder than being buried alive! Museum staff commented on the superb behaviour and enthusiasm of our Year 5 pupils so well done to Year 5!

Anti-Bullying Ambassadors Many thanks to Mr Sayles who has organised another pupil leadership opportunity for our enthusiastic pupils. Following their successful (and impressive!) letters of application, our selected team of Anti-Bullying Ambassadors took part in full day training at Campsmount Academy. This gave our children opportunity to share ideas and good practice with pupils aged 9-16 across Doncaster. It was great to see our children participating with so much confidence and maturity alongside pupils they were only meeting for the first time. Our Anti-Bullying Ambassadors will be organising and leading a range of activities for national Anti-Bullying Week in November. Times Tables Rockstars We have launched a new Maths initiative to help children develop quick recall of their times tables and division facts. Times Tables Rockstars motivates children to learn their times tables and to have lots of fun at the same time. All the children (and staff!) have chosen their unique rock star name and have created their rock star avatar. Children are now starting a 20 week programme of practising their multiplication and division facts. As children’s average recall of facts gets quicker they move up the levels of rock stardom, progressing from wannabee through to headline act, stadium act, rock star and even rock legend! As you can see from the photo below, staff released their inner ‘rock stars’ to launch the project with the children. We look forward to sharing more school news next month. Best wishes, E.A.
