Community News St Mary’s Sprotbrough Annual Christmas Fayre

Saturday 29th November is the date to note. Yes, it’s St Mary’s Christmas Fayre in the Church Hall, Main Street Sprotbrough from 10 am to 3 pm There’s a new topical theme for the Grotto this year (we are not allowed to say what!) and Santa is looking forward to meeting you all again this year.

Macular Society. Doncaster Branch of the Macular Society meet on the third Monday of the month at Doncaster CVS, 5-6 Trafford Court, off Trafford Way. We usually have a speaker alternate months. July we enjoyed afternoon tea at the Mansion House, earlier this year some of the group attended a conference in Leeds where we heard about the latest pioneering work to find new treatments and to see the latest low vision aids.

There’s an array of stalls, including Festive Eats and Treats with some new ideas and the fabulous cake stall. Check out the jams and preserves too or maybe toys, books and CD’s are what you’ll be aiming for. There will be games, tombolas to try your luck on and fabulous hampers to be won in the very popular hampers raffle. There are stalls for everyone and, to complete the festive feel, there’s our coffee shop for a drink and mince pie or why not enjoy a welcome break and try one of our lunches in the Upper Barn? Come and join the fun and festivities – see you there!

Anyone who is interested is very welcome to join the group whether or not they have Macular Degeneration. For more information please contact Chris Adamson Tel: 01302 770583.

School News from

Copley Junior School

Harvest Festival Our Harvest Festival was very well attended by parents/carers and relatives. Our theme this year was ‘Water’ and each class led presentations on the subject. The produce after the Harvest Festival was collected by Doncaster YMCA and Doncaster Food Bank. We also raised £115.75 for the charity ‘Water Aid’. Viking Invasion! As part of their Creative Learning Project on ‘Raiders and Traders’ children in Year 4 visited Murton Park in York. “On Wednesday 10th September, Year 4 travelled to Murton Park to help us discover what life was like in a Viking village. A Viking called Snorri greeted us and took us to the banqueting hall where he told us some interesting stories and facts. The best parts of the day were: helping the guard look after the village and chasing away a Saxon spy; finding out about Viking life; when Miss Hull was put in the stocks and water was poured on her head because she was rude!” By Lucy, Olivia and Brooke

11 Well done to Sapphire

Well done to Sapphire During the Summer term Miss Passant, our Art subject leader, invited children to enter a national design competition. Sapphire was chosen from thousands of submitted entries into the final eight of the national competition to design a Kickers Hi-Kick boot to be sold at Wynsors World of Shoes. Her design won 1st place with just under 3000 votes. Sapphire kindly donated her prize of a Playstation 3 to the Children’s Ward at Doncaster Royal Infirmary. Well done Sapphire! Year 6 World War II Day Year 6 visited Murton Park, dressed as evacuees, to experience a day during World War II. Children had a very eventful day undertaking domestic duties, making butter for their lunch, making rag rugs, learning the evacuation procedure for a bombing alert, trying out the gas masks, going in the shelter and even putting out incendiary devices! We look forward to sharing more school news next month. Best wishes, E.A. Crayton, Head teacher

News From Richmond Primary School

Ambassadors We recently introduced the role of Pupil Ambassadors at Richmond Hill Primary Academy as we strongly believe and value the opportunity to develop our pupils as leaders. The role of Ambassador is extremely important and therefore the right training to support the pupils is essential to its success. The team of Ambassadors are formed from our Year 6 pupils and while they do integrate academically, we recognised they also needed to bond socially, with this in mind an on-going training programme has been organised. Already the Ambassadors have attended a "Team Building Skills" workshop and recently have taken part in the Diana Award Anti-Bullying Ambassadors event held at Campsmount Academy. 180! The Winmau World Masters is a world class event which attracts thousands of darts players from all over the world and this year’s prestigious event was recently held in Yorkshire. Beau Greaves one of our Year 6 pupils, battled her way through to the final against the current European Youth Singles Champion from Ireland. Both girls had gone through the qualifying games in a tournament which had over 70 entrants. To get to the final was an extraordinary achievement for 10 year old Beau who has only been playing darts for 5 months! Watch this space!!

Harvest Festival - Scarecrow Competition Our pupils got into the spirit of Harvest Festival by taking part in our Scarecrow Competition. Parents also joined us for Harvest Assemblies where they were entertained by the children performing harvest related songs and poems. We were overwhelmed by the generosity of our school community with the amount of food donations we received which have been sent to our local Foodbank for Doncaster families experiencing difficulties. Punctuation Man! The Punctuation Show arrived at Richmond Hill Primary Academy. What a fantastic, fun way of learning about grammar and punctuation with songs, raps and more!
