Welcome to the November issue of
The Sprotbrough Arrow.
The nights are drawing in and Autumn is upon us once again. The clocks will soon rob us of one more hour of daylight on 27th October when they ‘fall back’, so make sure those outdoor lights are working! I hope you enjoy the half term break. Depending on when you receive your Arrow, you will notice Maise Maze is open with lots of fun lined up for children of all ages. Cusworth Hall is a favourite of mine this time of year, such a beautiful place to walk and notice the effects of Autumn on our landscape. (As well as the most gorgeous tea room!) The deadline for the December issue is Wednesday 13th November. The December issue will be distributed the last full weekend in November. I hope you all have a fun, safe Halloween and Guy Fawkes evening. Look out for our Black Friday advertising deal which will appear on Facebook on Friday 29th November! facebook@arrowmags
Best wishes

Here we are hurtling towards the end of the year and preparations have gathered pace for our Memory Tree event in Frenchgate….see below. We have received donations from some wonderful people who have taken our prostate cancer appeal to heart. Darren held a coffee morning in his garden (with marquees to shelter from the rain!), plus a raffle with prizes donated from local firms, and raised £550! Thank you so much for all your hard work. We have had donations from people celebrating special birthdays and anniversaries and requesting donations in lieu of presents. Our regular coffee morning ladies in Hatfield also continue to support us for which we are very grateful. Space limits us to mention everyone, but all our latest news is on the website, although we appreciate not everyone has a computer. At the time of writing (early October) we had reached £33,200. Our annual Memory Tree event in the Frenchgate Centre starts Monday, 25th November until Friday, 20th December. We hope to be downstairs outside Boots from 10am to 3pm Monday to Saturday. We have chosen some lovely new tree decorations this year so please come along and see us, have a chat and buy a token in memory of your loved one. If you have any fundraising ideas or would like to be a volunteer please do get in touch with us. Our contact details are: 22 Wood Street, Doncaster DN1 3LW (entrance by the side of Kerry Gough Florists), second floor (lift available), Room 209. Tel. 01302 325029. Email: info@dcdt.co.uk. Website: dcdt.co.uk. We look forward to seeing as many of you as possible at our Memory Tree stand.

Doncaster Rambler’s "Now't to do with Sir Robin!"
Encouraged by a more favourable weather forecast than the previous few Tuesdays, 37 of us met in Wadsley for this 11 mile anticlockwise circuit to the north west of Sheffield. Lee welcomed us all and explained about the disastrous flood of 1876 when a dam burst and 240 souls were drowned. After an early sprinkle of rain and some strong winds, we travelled west along the Sheffield Country Way and enjoyed expansive rural views down to our left, with our first glimpses of the sparkling Damflask Reservoir, 600 feet below. Our coffee stop was at the lovely St Nicholas Church in High Bradfield which overlooks Low Bradfield and the sheltered valley below where we were soon walking, along the southern banks of Damflask Reservoir towards our lunch stop at the Nag's Head where most of us enjoyed our lunches and a drink, basking in warm sunshine. Our shorter afternoon stretch took us along the Loxley Valley before a steady climb up through woodland onto Wadsley Common and eventually to our cars. This was a perfect autumn walk with lots of varied perspectives and ever changing views - enhanced by the lovely weather. Thanks, Lee, for planning and leading this new walk and thanks, Brian, who was kept busy as our backmarker, given the numbers walking. POI St Nicholas Church is a Gothic Perpendicular style church dating from the 1480s. It incorporates elements of an earlier church that may have been built in the 12th century, and it may stand on the site of an Anglo-Saxon place of worship. Loxley and the Robin Hood Legend The extensive forest of Loxley Chase extended as far south east as Nottinghamshire in the 12th century where it joined up with Sherwood Forest. Loxley is one of the locations claimed as the birthplace of Robin Hood. It is maintained that Robin of Locksley or Robert Locksley was born in the area in 1160 with John Harrison saying in his Exact and Perfect Survey and View of the Mannor of Sheffield of 1637, "Little Haggas Croft (pasture) wherein is ye founacion of a house or cottage where Robin Hood was borne. ." Little Haggas Croft was in the area of present-day Normandale House on Rodney Hill. The Great Sheffield Flood was a flood that devastated parts of Sheffield, on 11 March 1864, when the Dale Dyke Dam broke as its reservoir was being filled for the first time. At least 240 people died and more than 600 houses were damaged or destroyed by the flood. The immediate cause was a crack in the embankment, the cause of which was never determined. The dam's failure led to reforms in engineering practice, setting standards on specifics that needed to be met when constructing such large-scale structures. The dam was rebuilt in 1875. DANUM PROBUS CLUB Danum Probus Club is an organisation for men who have retired or are semi-retired from their profession, business or other employment who want to maintain a social network with others who have similar interests. The Club meets on the first and third Mondays of the month at Town Moor Golf Club, Bawtry Road, Belle Vue, Doncaster at 10am. At this meeting we have a speaker, their subjects covering a wide variety of interests. (see www.probusonline.org/danum for the ongoing programme). Ladies and guests are invited to the Club’s Spring and Autumn Lunches and also to the Annual holiday which is usually in late June or thereabouts. Members also have their own lunches in mid summer and December. In the summer months the Crown Green Bowling Seaton play on the Armthorpe Community Centre greens. Philip Caine was our guest speaker on Monday September 16 with his presentation of “From Barrow to Baghdad”. We were treated to a quickfire presentation chronicling Philip’s career starting as a chef in Barrow in Furness, through his contract work on North Sea Oil Rigs as chef and later in project management, and onto project management jobs in locations including Algeria, Nigeria, Baghdad and Kazakstan. And then after problems arising from the international financial crisis of 2008, and further project management work, Philip turned his hand to writing, and has now completed and published several novel, two of which have been taken up for serialised TV production. This was the story of a man who uses every minute of time doing something, and very hectic life it has been, making for a very full presentation. Malcolm Frost was our speaker on Monday 7October, with his presentation “Cock o’ the North”. This is the story of how a group of enthusiasts are recreating one of Sir Nigel Gresley’s steam engines which was built in Doncaster specially for the Edinburgh to Aberdeen line which features steep gradients. Malcolm told us about the recovery of the original drawings and how they had been converted so that modern engineering methods could be used in building the new engine. making the pieces for the engine has begun but there is still a long way to go. Wednesday 18 September was the occasion of Danum Probus Bowls Lunch at Kilham Hall Community Centre, Branton, when after an excellent buffet lunch, trophies were presented to the winners of the various competitions. The winners were: Individual Peter Oldale; Doubles, Geoff Firth and Arthur Kendrick and Kelly Cup, George Kirk. In November our speakers will be Mick Burdis with “The Stephen Lawrence Enquiry” on the 4th, and on 18th Keith Lumley with “Breaching the Beaches and Landings”. Any interested men who would like to come to these meeting as a visitor to see what we do, with a view to joining if you like us, please call either Des Parks (01302 856188), George Kirk (07808191211) or Geoff Firth (01302 849734) for more information or come to a meeting and introduce yourself to the President or Secretary at the front table.

School News from Copley Junior School
Harvest Festival at St Mary’s Church Our Harvest theme for 2019 was 'Harvest around the World'. Each class researched the harvest traditions of their chosen country and then presented their information, poems and songs (including using sign language) to over 300 children, parents, carers and relatives at our two Harvest Services at St Mary's Church. In our tour of harvest traditions around the World we learned about: Thanksgiving in America; Lammas in Scotland; the Holi Festival in India; Trung Thu in Vietnam; Harvest Moon in China; Oktoberfest in Germany; Chuseok in Korea and the Homowo Festival in Ghana. As usual the children’s singing was fantastic, especially for our favourite ‘Harvest Samba’ song! We are so grateful for the amazing abundance of harvest gifts donated by families. We displayed the fresh fruit and vegetables, tinned and packaged goods as well as toiletries on every surface at St Mary's Church. After our services, all the items were taken to the Doncaster Foodbank. Our donations will help many local families in need so thank you to everyone for your generosity. Young Shakespeare Company – Children in Year 5 and 6 thoroughly enjoyed a performance and workshop session of ‘Romeo and Juliet’ led by the Young Shakespeare Company. This provided children with a really inspiring and engaging first experience of Shakespeare. Cross Country Success Well done to our cross country teams, as they competed with great success at the Keep Moat Stadium. Year 3/4 girls - Congratulations to the team who competed against over 100 cross country runners from local schools. Our team came 4th out of 29 teams and go through to the South Yorkshire Finals. Year 3/4 boys - Congratulations to our Y3/4 team who came 12th out of 32 teams. Year 5/6 girls - Well done to our girls' team as they competed against over 100 runners. Our team came 2nd out of 32 teams and go through to the South Yorkshire Finals. Year 5/6 boys - Congratulations to the team as they came 2nd overall out of 33 teams and go through to the South Yorkshire Finals. The children were a credit to the school as they demonstrated superb sporting behaviour throughout. We now look forward to taking three teams to the South Yorkshire Finals. What a great achievement!

Learner Values At Copley, we are keen to promote pupils’ personal development and self-esteem just as much as their academic progress. Our Learner Values support our school ethos of helping children to develop important life skills and are embedded throughout our school and our curriculum. Our seven Copley Junior School Learner Values were chosen by a whole school pupil vote as well as discussions with our teaching team, governors and the Parent Forum. Our Learner Values are: respect, perseverance, selfbelief, independence, creativity, team work, friendship. All classrooms have our Learner Values displayed. All children have their own Learner Value card. Children are awarded stickers to put in their card when they demonstrate a particular Learner Value to a high level. When ten stickers are awarded for any Learner Value, we also award a certificate. Central Learner Values Display Our central Learner Values display always involves all the children in school. For our display below, all the children have designed and written their name on a feather for our theme 'Your wings already exist; all you have to do is fly.’

It has been an great year so far for Doncaster Pathfinders Walking Club. We have been working hard to increase our membership by launching a Facebook page, updating our website and featuring in articles in the Arrow magazine. All of these have paid off and we are happy to say our numbers have steadily risen over the year with new members enjoying our walks. We started off with a 'hangover' walk on one of the days between Christmas and New Year, as usual this was very well attended with people wanting to get out for some fresh air after the Christmas festivities. In January we went up to Harewood and finished in Otley. A great walk with stunning views and sightings of Red Kites along the way. February came around quickly and we set off from the Chatsworth estate and ended in the lovely town of Bakewell. We travelled north for our walks in March and April, to Stamford Bridge and part of the Wolds Way respectively. We were looking forward to better weather over the summer and were lucky with our walk in the Peak District area in May and around Ladybower
26
Reservoir in June. We also celebrated a milestone birthday for one of our long serving members in May; John Swift reached 80 and was made a lifetime member. July came along and so did some lovely sunny weather, the circular walk from Castleton was enjoyed by everyone. After a lot of rain in August we were treated some spectacular waterfalls in and around Grassington. September was stunning and both our groups set off from Eyam, the Village of the Damned. In 1666 the residents made a heroic decision to quarantine themselves to stop the spread of plague which was sweeping the country! October's walk was in North Yorkshire again, this time from Ampleforth. There are still a couple of months left on our 2019 programme. On 3rd November we are off to Derbyshire again and 15th December will be our Christmas walk.
