Oh October!

How did that happen? I really don’t want to tempt fate, and I am sure you will all agree, it has been so nice and reassuring to see all children back at school. Congratulations to all the teaching and support staff who have made this happen, I can’t imagine the challenges that have been met to ensure everyone is safe and continue to be so.

As we edge closer to more restrictions to help curb the spread of Covid 19, we must do all we can to keep our schools open. All I can do to help is follow the Government guidelines the best I can, as frustrating as some may be. This month’s Arrow has a little more information on the new rule of 6 which is direct from the Government website, which makes clear what groups are exempt. Some local groups, who are following Government guidelines are meeting up again and some are giving it a bit more time, please make sure you contact your group before making plans to attend as you may find they are still closed. The deadline for the Sprotbrough and Cusworth November issue is Wednesday 14th October. The November issue will be distributed the weekend commencing 25th October. Keep safe everyone. Community News Sprotbrough will have a tree!

Just when we thought things might be easing, along came new Covid-19 regulations! So, whatever hopes we had for the Sprotbrough Christmas Lights event have been dashed. That does not mean there will be no big Christmas tree or lights this year though. A new cut tall tree, kindly donated by Brittains Beverages, will be erected on the green and covered in lights. The lights on the tree at the top of Boat Lane will also be on, as will others. Latest regulations forbid gatherings of large groups, so there’s no event; Just enjoy seeing the lights as you walk past! What can we do as a community to bring an extra sparkle to the lights this year? Well, we’ve obtained permission to hang stars on the trees around the green. This is where you come in; please support Sprotbrough Lights, buy a star and pop along and hang it up from 16th November. There’s no charge, only the cost of a star or two for you! We can’t be there, but the stars can! Let’s go for it and see how many we, as a community, can put up and make this a memorable year in a good way? By the way, if you are unable to hang your star, place it in the box at Ottos and we’ll do it for you!

NEW WEBSITE It’s been a number of months since St Mary’s Church Sprotbrough had to “shut shop” because of Covid-19 and couldn’t let their popular two venues; Church Hall and Stable. They haven’t been idle however, and have created a new website www.SprotbroughVenues.co.uk in readiness for re-opening. It has become evident, from recent enquiries, that there are a growing number of folk who wish to hold events and St Mary’s would like to do their best to help if possible. Things are not quite back to normal, but they are now able to take certain bookings, ensuring everyone stays safe and complies with the latest government guidelines. So, if you need a venue in a pleasant location for a party, class, meeting, etc., get in touch with their administrator Kathryn on 07850 561312 or visit the new website and use the contact form.

Sprotbrough Orchard Infant School A warm welcome back to all the children and families at Orchard Infants! It is so exciting to have them back in school and hearing the classrooms buzzing with life again. Nursery are starting to get into the routine of staying half a day with Mrs Rebori, Mrs Rumary and Mrs Watson and Reception are beginning to enjoy their full days in Oak and Maple classes with Mrs Wilkinson and Miss Holford. During this first half term, Reception are exploring their new provision and activities. Due to some of the fine weather we have experienced, this has included lots of sunny outdoor fun! We have been practising our balance on bikes and scooters, playing circle games and reading to our teachers. Key Stage One have been looking at nature inspired artists who work with natural materials to create outdoor pictures including Andy Goldsworthy and James Brunt. Take a look at some of our wonderful creations. Year Two have managed to weed and turn over some of the raised flower beds ready for some new bulbs. Hopefully we’ll see some growth from our daffodils in early spring. Keep your fingers crossed and eyes peeled! We look forward to making apple crumble and pies in the coming weeks and getting used to our new ‘normal’ in school. Look out for updates on our cooking skills in next months edition

Covid 19 and The New Rule of 6 When can I gather in groups of more than 6?

If you live in a household with more than 6 people, you can continue to gather in and attend all settings together. This same applies for your support bubbles. All venues should continue to accommodate groups larger than 6 who live together or are in the same support bubble to gather in and use their services and venues. There are exceptions where groups can be larger than 6 people, including:

•for work, or the provision of voluntary or charitable services •registered childcare, education or training •supervised activities provided for children, including wraparound care, youth groups and activities, and children’s playgroups

•providing support to a vulnerable person •providing emergency assistance, and to avoid injury or illness or to escape risk of harm •for arrangements where children do not live in the same household as both their parents •fulfilling a legal obligation such as attending court or jury service •weddings and civil partnership ceremonies and receptions – up to 30 people, in a public place •funerals – up to 30 people. This does not include wakes, other than for religious ceremonial pur-

poses.

•other religious and belief-based life cycle ceremonies – up to 30 people, in a public place. This only covers the ceremonies, and does not include celebrations of these events.

•organised sport or exercises classes or licensed outdoor physical activity. This does not include informal sport or fitness activity with family or friends – this must be limited to a group of 6.

•elite sporting competition and training •support groups – formally organised groups to provide mutual aid, therapy or any other form of

support. This includes support to victims of crime, recovering addicts, new parents, people with long-term illnesses, those facing issues relating to their sexuality or gender, and those who have suffered bereavement.

•protests – if organised in compliance with COVID-19 Secure guidance

Where a group includes someone covered by one of these exemptions, they are not counted as part of the gatherings limit. This means, for example, that a tradesperson can go into a household of six without breaching the limit if they are there for work.

Visit www.gov.uk/government/publications/coronavirus-outbreak-faqs-what-you-canand-cant-do/coronavirus-outbreak-faqs-what-you-can-and-cant-do For more information on current guidelines and the law. (Information provided correct 20/09/2020)

School News from Copley Junior School It has been wonderful to welcome back all the children to Copley Junior as we settle into the new autumn term. Things are a little different as children are organised into year group ‘protected bubbles’ and we have staggered start times, breaks, lunchtimes and end of the day times around our COVID-19 risk assessment. The children have quickly settled to the new routines and we have been very impressed with children’s enthusiasm for their learning. Well done children – we are very proud of you!

Times Tables Rock Stars at Copley Junior School At Copley we support children to learn their times tables by using the ‘Times Tables Rock Stars’ programme. Times Tables Rock Stars is a fun and challenging programme designed to help pupils master the times tables. Children practise their times tables and are then tested against the clock. There is also opportunity to practise online; children choose their own rock star name, design their avatar and can gain points to exchange for presents for their avatar. Children climb up the ladder of rock stardom. If you can answer any times tables question accurately in less than 9 seconds you are at ‘busker’ level; children need to achieve a speed of less than 3 seconds to become a times tables rock star and can become a ‘rock legend’ if they can achieve accurate recall of all questions in less than 2 seconds.

Who will be our 2021 Times Tables Rock Star Champion? Only time will tell! We look forward to sharing more of our school news soon. Best Wishes,
