Welcome

to the October issue of

Sprotbrough Arrow September has probably been our most normal month so far since the first lockdown, I know many people are still very worried and covid has not left us yet, but it is so nice to have things open again, local businesses can get back to what they do best and schools can regain some sense of normality. It was lovely to see the scarecrows around the village, huge congratulations to everyone who took part. There were some amazing entries. The switching on of the Sprotbrough Christmas lights will go ahead this year, we have some information in this month’s Arrow so be sure to make a note in your diary. The deadline for the November issue is Wednesday 20th October. The November issue will be distributed the last full weekend in October. Stay safe everyone

RICHMOND HILL PRIMARY ACADEMY Glad to be back It has been fantastic to welcome our children, parents and community back to Richmond Hill for the new academic year. We‘ve had a wonderful settled start and with restrictions on mixing in school lifted, it has been absolutely fantastic to see year groups from Nursery to Year 6 interacting. Dining out with friends With a change in our lunch arrangements our children have enjoyed being able to have a choice of lunch and to be able to dine with their friends. This is certainly something they have missed during restrictions and it’s been great to see the dining room’s new salad station being utilised - it’s a hit! Settling in at Richmond Hill Our nursery children have settled amazingly into Reception. We are so very pleased that all children were in classes full time within the third day of the school year. What superstars they are! Batten down the hatches matey Year 6 launched their pirate topic with a day of exploration. Pupils researched flag symbolism and the importance of ship names then had to ensure they could sail a flag without it getting wet - they then made cannons to fire at their enemy ships. They went on a treasure hunt on the field making their own treasure chests then used maths to create a secret combination code to keep their treasure safe/to try and crack open other groups’ chests. Music to our ears Musical instrument lessons have returned to Richmond Hill. Our children have thoroughly enjoyed their sessions this week in guitar, trombone and clarinet.

News from Copley Junior School We have had a wonderful start to the year at Copley with all of the children returning to school eager to learn and ready for the year ahead. During the Summer holiday, we saw tremendous generosity from our community with a number of local businesses supporting our ‘big tidy’ and we were lucky enough to receive a donation of tables and chairs to brighten our shared learning areas. Visitors to school have commented on how colourful and engaging our learning environment looks. The children are particularly fond of our giant TTRock Stars display and Copley House shields that can be found on display in the school hall. You may even be able to spot them in the back of the photographs of our TTRock Stars launch event! Our next project involves raising money for a new interactive screen and decorating in the school hall so that we have a wonderful space to enjoy our lunches, PE lessons and assemblies. We love reading at Copley so we set a BookFace Challenge for pupils to use their photography and computing skills alongside their reading interests to create some fantastic photographs which involved using their bodies and book covers! We were so impressed with their efforts and the pictures can now be seen in our library areas for the whole school to enjoy. It is going to be an exciting year at Copley and we cannot wait to share it all with you. Take care, Miss Blades-Baker Headteacher

Doncaster Danum Scouts Night Hike competition Will take place in Sprotbrough on the night of the 16th/17th October. Scouts and Explorer Scouts from all over Doncaster will descend on Sprotbrough to take part in the first Night Hike since the easing of Covid restrictions. The competition has been running for over 20 years and is one of the most arduous events for Scouts, certainly in South Yorkshire and quite possibly, the whole of the UK! Sprotbrough Methodist Church has kindly allowed our district to use their church facilities as a start point and groups of young people will leave from Park Drive clad in reflective jackets and walk in to the night to find their way around the route which will only be divulged to them, soon before they set off!

Memorial Service

Open The Book

Open the book group, who enact Bible stories for the children in assemblies, are returning to our schools as soon as possible. In the meantime they are in the process of making a 10 min film for the schools to use as they wish. If this is successful more will follow. Sounds very exciting.

A service to remember those we have lost, to support one another and to seek some comfort and solace. SUNDAY 7th NOVEMBER 6pm St Mary’s Church Come and light a candle as your loved one is named before God.

All Welcome

Sprotbrough Orchard Infant School We were thrilled to welcome our children back into school on Thursday 2nd September 2021, including Maple and Oak classes with our new full timers. It has been fabulous to return to a ‘more normal’ way of working with children being involved in the usual assemblies, after school clubs and shared playtimes. Since returning, we have had three after school clubs running which started on Tuesday 14th September with a new Disney Shooting Stars Active Play Through Storytelling. This is aimed at children who don’t usually participate in sport or football, and teaches the basics of attacking and defending through the story of Toy Story 4. Children are thoroughly enjoying this extra curricula opportunity with Mr Howsam and Miss Reynolds, our two sports apprentices. The time had finally come on Wednesday 15th September, where we were able to take our children out of school on a visit! This half term, to tie in with our centre of interest, we organised a visit to Squirrel Wood and arranged for two forest school leaders to plan science based activities focusing on habitats and microhabitats. Children got busy exploring the woods, listening and observing for signs of wildlife, plants and animals. We went mini beast hunting, categorised our mini beasts, created big natural artworks and made popcorn by the camp fire. Nina and Claire were fabulous hosts and really captivated the children’s imaginations. The children can now recognise habitats and wild animals in British woodland areas. Year 1 will be going on the visit on Wednesday 22nd September, keep your eyes peeled in the next issue of The Arrow to see what fun they get up to!
