The very first Arrow magazine, The Branton & Auckley Arrow, started this month ten years ago. In October 2005, my plan was to provide a magazine which helped to keep the local community informed of events that would help bring them together and share good news about life in our villages. The Sprotbrough Arrow started two and a half years later and is now part of a network of Arrow magazines covering other villages in and around Doncaster. The community model is still and always will be at the heart of what we do and I thank everyone who contributes to the Sprotbrough Arrow and allows me to share your news and events with your community. This month we have news from the local primary schools as well as one of the local football teams. If you would like to share your teams sporting triumphs, please do get in touch. Deadline for the November issue is Wednesday 21st October. The November Arrow will be delivered the last weekend in October. Best wishes

School News from

Copley Junior School Mr Siddall I would like to thank members of the local community for your kind messages of sympathy and support, following the sad news of the death of Mr Siddall, a highly valued member of our staffing team. We are planning some special events and memorials to mark his passing and we will share further details in due course. The start to the new term has been very busy. All classes have taken part in an educational visit out of school to launch their new learning project in an exciting way. John Bull Rock Factory Visit On Wednesday 9th September Pearl and Opal Classes visited the John Bull Rock Factory in Bridlington to begin their Scrumdiddlyumptious topic work. Whilst there, the children were able to roll a piece of rock with their initial inside and see how the factory makes and packages fudge, biscuits and chocolate. Whilst finding out about the machinery in the factory, they were able to taste samples of sweets and biscuits. They also made chocolate lollipops before a well -deserved visit to the play area. Vikings Attack! “When we went on our Viking visit to Murton Park first we met a lady called Ruth. She told us all about the Vikings and showed us the way to the Viking village. The thing we enjoyed most was being guards for my Lord because we got to scare off a smelly Saxon. We also enjoyed making clay lamps and the farming but it was back breaking work.” by Abbie and Nathan

Pharaohs Year 5 have made a great start to the year! Kicking off their learning project on Ancient Egypt with a trip to Weston Park, they explored the exhibitions in the museum before undertaking the task of mummification. Extracting brains through the nostrils and placing vital organs in Canopic jars were just a few of the tasks they undertook before making their own ‘shabti’ to be buried alongside ‘Dead Fred’. Did you know that the Egyptians used to bury their slaves alive alongside their mummified bodies so that they would have a slave in the afterlife? This didn’t last long because the slaves would run away every time someone in the family fell ill. This is why they began making a ‘shabti’ (a small model of a slave) to be buried alongside their mummified remains. All of the children decided that making a ‘shabti’ was much kinder than being buried alive! Evacuated to Murton Park On Monday 7th and Tuesday 8th of September, 50 children from Copley Junior School were evacuated from Doncaster to Murton Park. On arrival, they were met by an evacuation officer who escorted them to the village hall. During their visit, children were able to experience what life was like for children during World War 11. Activities included: washing and ironing clothes; making farmhouse crunch and butter; blast taping windows; carpet making; air raid drills and most children’s favourite extinguishing a small incendiary bomb! A great day was had by all. We look forward to sharing more school news next month. Best wishes, E.A. Crayton Head teacher

Memorial Plaque of John Lyth Restored A Local resident of Sprotbrough Village has took it upon himself to restore the crumbling memorial plaque of John Lyth. The plaque was erected in his memory for services rendered during his long reign as Vicar of St Marys ChurchSprotbrough, and his part in the conservation, and preservation of Sprotbrough Village. The plaque resides under the tree that was planted in 1982 again to honour his memory. But after many years of being battered by the weather, the plaque started to deteriorate terribly. Dave Glover a local resident of the village for over 25 years quoted: "When I was out with our children, our daily walks to the shop for a newspaper and some sweets for the kids, would always involve a stop at the tree with the memorial plaque. I would have to read the words on the plaque to them every time! They are now both grown up, and now its my turn again to take the Grand Children to the shops.....and read the plaque to them. But sadly the plaque had fallen into such a poor state, that the lettering was almost illegible, and the words that used to be embedded in my memory had over time faded away. So I decided It was time to take action." Dave had the necessary skills and the equipment to bring the ailing plaque back to its former glory-before it was too late! Over 3 weeks of sand blasting, metal treatment and 10 coats of paintthe plaque was ready for the lettering to be re-painted in.

Dave tells us: "Painting the lettering in with a tiny brush was mind numbing! It took me 9 hours to carefully paint every letter in precisely, but it was worth it in the end". The plaque now sits proudly back at the base of the John Lyth Memorial Tree on Main Street in the village for all to see, and a fitting tribute to a man who tirelessly worked for the conservation of Sprotbrough Village.

Several Richmond Hill Primary Acadamy Year 2 boys played their first ever league game for Sprotbrough and Cusworth Crusaders U7's football team on Sunday 6th September. The game was away andthey played Carcroft Village U7's. Sprotbrough won 5-3! All the boys played brilliantly to say it was their first ever proper match and they really did themselves, the club, their parents and their school proud. They play all of their home games on the Richmond Hill Academy playing field and their first home game was on Sunday 13th September. Martin Nelson is the team coach/manager and dad to Alfie, one of the players, he has been coaching the players since around Easter time and this is his first experience of football coaching. Well done Sprotbrough and Cusworth Crusaders, good luck for the season.

Sprotbrough Orchard Infant School News

All staff at Orchard would like to extend a warm welcome back to our parents and children and to the new children starting in our Nursery. We have had a busy start to our Autumn term, starting with a drama production from Talegate Theatre, to teach the children about the importance of school attendance. The children learned that over the course of the school year their attendance should be 95% or higher and that they should be in school for a total of 175 days! Our Year 2 children then benefitted from a workshop with Sam and Sammy which involved more in-depth information and activities. The staff would like to take this opportunity to thank the theatre company for their visit.

During the week commencing 7th September we enjoyed a visit from the new Reverend at St Mary's Church, Amanda. The Bishop and his team also came on Friday 11th September. They did a special assembly for the children, teaching them about God and his overarching love for us all. Did you know that HE knows exactly how many hairs are on your head?! On Tuesday 15th September Rowan and Willow class went to High Melton Forest School as part of our centre of interest work. The children met Nina who showed them how to make a fire safely in a fire pit and then had the opportunity to taste popcorn made over the fire. It was delicious! Children also learned how to make fairy houses after the 'flat bottomed dragon' had flattened them the night before! They then got chance to make fairies and elves to go inside their new constructions. Other classes from school will be attending on Thursday (17th) and the following week, so keep your eyes open for more photographs of their fun!

New Beginnings Another September has arrived and our new Reception children enjoy a range of activities as we embark on a new learning journey together.

Flutes, Flutes and more Flutes! Our Year 4 pupils have recently been introduced to the wonders of the flute. Staff from the Doncaster Music Service will be providing lessons throughout the year – Proms at the Albert Hall here we come!

Hair today... Gone tomorrow Macey Price is awesome! Our Year 3 pupil has donated her long hair to The Little Princess Trust who provide real hair wigs to boys and girls across the UK and Ireland who have sadly lost their own hair through cancer treatment. Macey’s JustGiving page has raised over a £1,000 for the charity and this selfless act was also celebrated in a recent Achievement Assembly.
