Community News Kind-hearted nursery gets into the fundraising spirit! A Doncaster nursery is asking for the local community’s help as part of its fundraising efforts to raise money for two worthy charities. Little Learners day nursery, part of Doncaster Deaf Trust, is holding a coffee morning on Saturday 1 October in aid of Sheffield Children’s Hospital and Macmillan Cancer Care. The nursery, which is based on Leger Way and offers a unique communication experience for deaf and hearing children, is looking for people to take a stall, prizes for its raffle and monetary donations. Kelly Severn, from Little Learners who has organised the event, said: “We are looking forward to a really exciting event. We will have so much going on and we are really hoping that the Doncaster community will support us with donations and by having stalls so it is all a great success. “The two charities we are raising funds for do such great work. A number of our staff, including myself, have had children who have been in Sheffield Children’s Hospital so it is very close to all our hearts. And Macmillan does wonderful things for people living with cancer and their families. “We would like to hear from anyone who thinks they can help and also hope as many people as possible will attend on the day to join in the fun!” At the event itself, Theo the Bear, The Children’s Hospital Charity’s mascot, will be making an appearance.

Richmond Hill Primary Academy Roald Dahl Day Jumpsquiffling celebrations were abound at Richmond Hill Primary Academy on Roald Dahl day. The school was infiltrated by all manners of gloriumptious characters such as OompaLoompas, Willy Wonkas, BFGs and Matildas. The kiddles dressed up on what would have been the icon’s 100th birthday and made donations to Roald Dahl’s Marvellous Children’s Charity which helps to make life better for seriously ill children in the UK. Our pupils were also set a summer challenge to see how many Roald Dahl books they could read. Through the glare of the sizzling sunshine in the summer holidays, our kiddles proved to us how phizz-whizzing they are. Rhys Jenkins was the overall winner of our reading challenge and received a whopping giant Wonka bar for his efforts!

Settling into school A warm welcome to our Nursery children who have had a wonderful start to their time at Richmond Hill.

Sprotbrough Orchard Infant School Oh my goodness, what a super start to the new term we’ve had here at Orchard! We welcomed our children back on Monday 5th September and have met our new reception children who are starting with half days for the first three weeks. It sounds like they all had a fun and safe summer. Years One and Two have been on their first visit of the school year linking to our centre of interest this half term, the Tudors. Thankfully, the weather in Gainsborough was fabulous ensuring that our children had a fantastic day spent learning about the Old Hall. They dressed up in traditional Tudor clothing, went into the kitchen to experience a cook’s life, explored a Tudor chamber (including chamber pot!) and had a royal banquet in the Great Hall. We would like to extend thanks to Joan, our tour guide, for a hands on day.

School News from Copley Junior School

Roald Dahl Day

We celebrated 100 years of one of our best story tellers with our Roald Dahl theme day. Our creative children came to school dressed as a character from a Roald Dahl story or dressed in yellow, as this was Roald Dahl's favourite colour. We enjoyed year group competitions including finding the golden ticket in one of Roald Dahl’s books and a Roald Dahl themed orienteering competition, with book vouchers as prizes. Children shared their costumes in our whole school assembly and teachers even performed one of Roald Dahl’s revolting rhymes! You can see some of the wonderful costumes here.

John Bull Rock Factory Visit On Friday 9th September Pearl and Opal Classes visited the John Bull Rock Factory in Bridlington to begin their ‘Scrumdiddlyumptious’ topic work. Whilst there, the children were able to roll a piece of rock with their initial inside and see how the factory makes and packages fudge, biscuits and chocolate. Whilst finding out about the machinery in the factory, they were able to taste samples of sweets and biscuits. They also made chocolate lollipops before a well-deserved visit to the play area.

Vikings Attack

To start their project on ‘Raiders and Traders’ Year 4 have been on an exciting trip to Murton Park, to fully experience what it was like to be a Viking. The children were greeted by a strong Viking woman named Runa, who prepared them for the day ahead. The children dressed as Vikings and, for one day only, the adults dressed as the children’s slaves! They then made their way to the Viking village where they met ‘My Lord’. Once My Lord had accepted them into his village, it was time to get to work! Throughout the day the children got to be craftsmen, shaping and decorating their own individual pots, farmers, preparing the land to ensure the crops would grow, they ground the flour for bread-making and collected wood, and they also learned how to be powerful Viking guards. School Success We are proud to share that following a visit from external assessors we have been awarded Doncaster’s Anti Bullying Charter Mark at Gold level. Our external assessors reviewed our policies, procedures and approach to creating a safe, supportive and inclusive school community. Our external assessment visit also included talking to different groups of children, including our School Council and Mini Life Coaches, to gain their views of their school experience. We look forward to sharing more school news next month. Best wishes, E.A. Crayton, Head teacher

DON GORGE COMMUNITY GROUP It now seems an age since our Clean for the Queen event in April and Autumn is now creeping up on us as, although we are still experiencing some nice warm days, early morning mists are here too and I have just seen a regular visitor raiding our Contorted Hazel of nuts, no doubt ‘squirrelling’ them away for the Winter. Hopefully it will leave our bird table alone for a bit! It’s been a good Summer on the whole and gardens have flourished with the mixture of rain and sun we have had. Our Group has had some useful events too. The Co-op sponsored another clean-up operation, which enabled us to begin the Himalayan Balsam clearance near the fish pass. Just about all of it has been cut down by our Conservation Volunteers during the last three months, hopefully before it had chance to seed, so we will see what comes up next year. I feel sure it will be a longterm job, but at least we can try to get the better of it. Prospective volunteers can contact the Secretary by phone or email (see below). The Go Fishing event went surprisingly well considering it rained nearly all day and nearly beat us when it came time to clear up. About 50 youngsters had a go and received a fishing rod as recompense for their endurance. The Canal & River Trust informs me that they hope to repeat the event next year and would welcome suggestions and comments; these can be sent to digital.admin@canalrivertrust.org.uk – if you took part, why not let them know what you think. I discovered the Angling Trust doing a Family Fishing Day on the 26 August, but as it hadn’t been advertised and no-one knew anything about it, I don’t think it was a great success. However, I was informed they are thinking of having another one before the year is out so hopefully we will get a poster to advertise it in good time. On Friday evening 9 September, Chris Firth MBE of the Don Catchment River Trust organised a Heritage Walk in the Gorge. Thirteen or fourteen people turned up to what was a very enjoyable and instructive experience when Chris informed us of the events which caused the River Don to become known as the most polluted river in Europe and what has turned it round to now support salmon for the first time since the Industrial Revolution. It was quite amazing to discover that it wasn’t until the late 1980’s that any concerted effort was made to do something to bring about this change. We are currently thinking about producing a series of information leaflets about the Don Gorge and would be interested to hear from anyone who has expertise in any particular field, for example trees, flowers, birds, geology, butterflies and moths, etc, who would be willing to provide information for such leaflets. We are also producing a full colour 2017 Calendar showing aspects of the Gorge - the first time we have done anything like this. We rarely do any fundraising, so we hope everyone will support us. It will be available shortly and copies will cost £5, but advanced copies can be ordered at £4. All enquiries to the Secretary please.
