Welcome to the October issue of the Sprotbrough Arrow.

Hands up, who has switched their heating on? Mine is up I’m afraid, I gave in around mid September.. We have a few reminders of the time of year in this month’s issue with Yorkshire Wildlife Park and Boston Park advertising their Halloween events. Well done to The Sprotbrough’s Children Society who has raised £1000 from their Scarecrow festival in August. There were some super entries, great to see the locals taking part. I have copied some information from DMBC’s website regarding the new Public Space Protection Order and what it means. It is easy to misunderstand the notices which have been put up throughout the villages. Hope this helps to clear things up. Don’t forget, clocks go back 29th October!

The deadline for the November issue will be Wednesday 18th October. The November Arrow will be delivered by the last weekend in October.

Best Wishes Michelle Sidebottom Website E-mail Mobile

School News from Copley Junior School

We have had a busy and exciting start to the school year, with every class going out on an educational visit to launch their new creative learning project. Year 3 ‘Scrummdiddlyumptious’ Year 3’s first project of the year is ‘Scrummdiddlymptious’! This is a design technology project, in which children learn about healthy eating and create their own fruit smoothies. To launch their new project Year 3 had a fun-filled visit to the John Bull Rock Factory in Bridlington. Whilst there, the children were able to roll a piece of rock with their initial inside and see how the factory makes and packages fudge, biscuits and chocolate. Whilst finding out about the machinery in the factory, they were able to taste samples of sweets and biscuits. They also made chocolate lollipops before a well-deserved visit to the play area. Year 4 Viking Attack! To start their project on ‘Raiders and Traders’ Year 4 have been on an exciting trip to Murton Park, to fully experience what it was like to be a Viking. The children were greeted by a strong Viking woman named Runa, who prepared them for the day ahead. The children dressed as Vikings and, for one day only, the adults dressed as the children’s slaves! They then made their way to the Viking village where they met ‘My Lord’. Once My Lord had accepted them into his village, it was time to get to work. Throughout the day the children got to be craftsmen, shaping and decorating their own individual pots, farmers, preparing the land to ensure the crops would grow, they ground the flour for bread-making and collected wood, and they also learned how to be powerful Viking guards.

Year 5 Get It Wrapped! As part of their creative learning project on the ‘Pharaohs’, Year 5 visited Weston Park Museum in Sheffield. As well as touring the museum, children took part in a workshop to find out about the mummification process! Did you know that the Egyptians used to bury their slaves alive alongside their mummified bodies so that they would have a slave in the afterlife? This didn’t last long because the slaves would run away every time someone in the family fell ill. This is why they began making a ‘shabti’ (a small model of a slave) to be buried alongside their mummified remains. All of the children decided that making a ‘shabti’ was much kinder than being buried alive. Year 6 Evacuees Year 6 children from Copley Junior School were evacuated from Doncaster to Murton Park to start their project on ‘A Child’s War’. On arrival, they were met by an evacuation officer who escorted them to the village hall. During their visit, children experienced what life was like for children during World War Two. Activities included: washing and ironing clothes; making farmhouse crunch and butter; blast taping windows; carpet making; air raid drills and most children’s favourite extinguishing a small incendiary bomb! I am delighted to share that at all the venues visited, we have received many comments about the excellent behaviour, enthusiasm and interest shown by our pupils – so well done children! We look forward to sharing more school news next month. Best wishes, E.A. Crayton Head teacher

PSPO– Public Space Protection Order and Dog Control… what does it mean? For further clarification on this part of the PSPO, I have copied from DMBC’s website what it covers and how it is enforced on designated land owned by the council and used by the public. Dog fouling -If a dog defecates at any time on land to which this order applies, a person who is in charge of the dog at the time must remove the faeces from the land forthwith. Leads must be worn -A person in charge of a dog is required to keep it on a lead within the following areas: 1. All cemeteries and churchyards, including green burial areas; 2. All footpaths around lakes and ponds; 3. All sports grounds, fields, parks, and pitches, which are maintained by the local authority and are not subject to ‘Dog Exclusion’, but only when in use for organised authorised events. These include galas, fairs, sporting matches, charitable events (e.g. race for life). Clear signage will be erected in these locations. Leads by order -A person in charge of a dog on land to which this order applies must comply with a direction given to him by an authorised officer of the Authority to put and keep the dog on a lead. An authorised officer may only give a direction under this order if such restraint is reasonably necessary to prevent a nuisance or behaviour by the dog that is likely to cause annoyance or disturbance to any other person, or to a bird or another animal. Dog exclusion area -A person in charge of a dog must not take it into, or keep it within a specified or signed area. This includes fenced / enclosed children’s play area and where there is a sign at its entrance(s) as a “dog exclusion area” (whether the sign uses those particular words or words and/or symbols having like effect) which is designated and marked for children’s play. Clear signage will be erected in these locations Means to pick up - A person in charge of a dog on land to which this order applies must have and produce on request the appropriate means to pick up dog faeces deposited by that dog. The obligation is complied with if, after a request from an authorised officer, the person in charge of the dog produces an appropriate means to pick up dog faeces.

For further information on this order, please refer to DMBC Website. Also fit Alarms

DANUM PROBUS CLUB Danum Probus Club is an organisation for men who have retired or are semi-retired from their profession, business or other employment who want to maintain a social network with others who have similar interests. Danum Probus Club meets on the first and third Mondays of the month at Town Moor Golf Club, Bawtry Road, Belle Vue, Doncaster starting at 10 am. The guest speaker on Monday 3 September was George Clark whose subject was the Zulu Wars. This part of British history in South Africa is overlooked, but its outcomes had a significant effect on future happenings in the colony, and did not turn out well for either side. We were taken through the alleged reasons for fighting the wars, and the battles that ensued aided by a good collection of visual aids, especially maps. This was a very informative presentation on a subject many of us knew little about. At the second meeting of the month on Monday 18 September Malcolm Walpole gave one of his audio visual presentations, this one being “Legacy of the Emperors.

On Wednesday 27 September the Bowls Section held its annual lunch and Trophy presentation at Kilham Hall, Branton. Nearly 50 members and guests attended this event. Any interested men who would like to come the meetings as a visitor to see what we do, with a view to joining if you like us, please call either Ray Bartlett (01302 310575), Des Parks (01302 856188) or David Allen (01302 885813) for more information.

This gorgeous girl is Rosie, an 8 month old Doberman X Great Dane puppy. Rosie is an adorable bundle of energy!! She has not had a lot of training or socialisation with other dogs, so will need some work. She has been fine with children, but cats find her a bit too bouncy!! She is a lovely girl with a lot of love to give, so we would really like to find the right home for her. If you would like any more details, please give Isle Rescue a call on
