Wonderful news! At the end of August we received an anonymous donation of £10,000 towards the biopsy machine. This was extremely generous and our very grateful thanks to the donor(s). Our stall at Auckley Show made £324. After an early shower thankfully the sun shone for the rest of the day. Thank you to everyone who supported us. Intake and Wheatley Pub Watch donated £700 last month. Our thanks to all involved and for their continuing support. We received £3,500 from Wheatley Golf Club and would like to thank the organisers and everyone who donated or helped in any way. Don’t forget to make a note of our annual Memory Tree event in the Frenchgate Centre which will be from Monday, 25th November until Friday, 20th December. We hope to be downstairs outside Boots from 10am to 3pm Monday to Saturday. Please get in touch if you have any fundraising ideas or would like to be a volunteer. Our contact details are: 22 Wood Street, Doncaster DN1 3LW (entrance by the side of Kerry Gough Florists), second floor (lift available), Room 209. Tel. 01302 325029. Email: info@dcdt.co.uk. Website: dcdt.co.uk. You can follow our progress on the website – we try and include as many of the donations as possible and update our ‘thermometer’ on a regular basis so you can see how much we have raised with your help.

Doncaster Pathfinders Walking Club

On Sunday 11th August Doncaster Pathfinders Walking Club were up in North Yorkshire enjoying the stunning countryside around Bolton Abbey and Grassington. The 'A' walkers set off for a 12 mile walk from Bolton Bridge and followed the Dales Way alongside the river Wharfe. There were great views of Bolton Abbey which has stood on this site since 1154. We continued alongside the river to Appletreewick where we had our pub stop at the Craven Arms. The river was in full flow after all the rain we have had recently and was quite a spectacular sight. After lunch, we once more followed the river to the pretty village of Burnsall and then onto our final destination of Grassington where we were picked up by the coach. Our 'B' walkers completed a very similar but slightly shorter route of 8.5 miles, also following the river Wharfe with a lunch stop at the Craven Arms. Their walk finished at Burnsall where they boarded the coach to make the short journey to Grassington to collect the rest of the walkers. If you would like to join us on our next walk to Eyam in the Peak District on 8th September please search for Doncaster Pathfinders Walking Club on Facebook or visit our website www.doncasterpathfinders.org.uk. If you can't make it in September, why not join us on 6th October September when we are back in North Yorkshire at Ampleforth."

Local Animals Need You Now the excitement of summer has passed, your thoughts may be turning to starting something new and challenging to fill your time. Volunteering for a local charity is a fantastic way to meet new people and learn new skills. RSPCA South Yorkshire Animal Centre, near Bawtry, has some vacancies, which may appeal to you. The local RSPCA is looking for a Trustee, who can make lasting links with local businesses providing opportunities for the Animal Centre to gain support for their vital rehabilitation and rehoming work. If you have a strong network of local business contacts, feel passionately about our work fighting animal cruelty and could provide the link between the Animal Centre and local business, then you could help the charity expand further. Your volunteering skills may lie in a more practical direction? The Centre would love to hear from anyone who can turn their hand to gardening and general maintenance tasks. The site is based in a rural area, which needs round the year attention. The time and attention you could give the grounds will be key in maintaining the high standards the charity has for its Centre. If you are interested, please send an email to info@rspcadrb.org.uk and the Animal Centre looks forward to hearing from you. The Animal Centre team re-homes hundreds of rescue animals each year. The charity’s mission is to rehabilitate and rehome vulnerable animals, this work relies on kind donations from the public. Proceeds from events that the local branch of the RSPCA organises and donations/sales at its charity shops provide the necessary funding. Doncaster Rambler’s A local walk around Campsall Six hardy adventurers assembled at Campsall Country Park (Churchfield Road car park) in bright, warm and sunny conditions. The walk leader, Trevor Jenkins, outlined the route as mostly flat and presenting few problems, except for some “jungle” challenges (fallen branches and some overgrown bracken, briars and brambles, possible tigers and elephants) when we left the well-defined paths of the Country Park to explore its less well-travelled tracks. However, even the best, well -walked trails can have hidden hazards and one of our number found one within a few hundred metres of the start – an almost invisible, small stump – and tripped up, but, thankfully, without injury. The Clay Pond, replete with reed beds, water-lilies, swans and fishermen looked good enough for a postcard, so picturesque in the sunshine. Dexterity was then required in the “jungle”; we had to manoeuvre our way over fallen trees, wriggle under overhanging branches and make sure the bracken did not ensnare us. During our encounter, a hearing aid was dislodged by some leafy sprig and “lost” temporarily; a full scale search party soon found it, thanks to the keen eyesight of Louisa. After leisurely “elevenses” we left the Park, stopped briefly for a chinwag about the history and location of the erstwhile Campsall Hall (demolished 1984), then continued north towards Norton. Nest it was down Ings Lane, before going east along Norton Ings for a while. As we reached the end of this path, we turned south and then picked up the higher of two trails than run parallel to each other at the side of the former Askern Pit’s spoil heap. Besides some mounds of fly-tipped waste and general litter, we came across a burnt out car carcass and pondered why some people defile the spaces we all share. Almost back to the car park, we passed Askern Solar Farm with its huge number of black photovoltaic panels, capable, we were told, of producing enough renewable electricity for some 4,000 houses. It was then down into the quiet, narrow stretch of woods that straddle Campsall Road and at 12.40 we were back where we started, feeling the benefits of having had some useful exercise, in pleasant weather and in good company. School News from Copley Junior School

Eco Schools ‘Green Flag’ Celebration with the Mayor of Doncaster We are very proud that our Eco Council, led by our enthusiastic Mrs Westerman and supported by all the children in school, has achieved the highest national Eco Schools Award of the Green Flag! Eco Council members have led many projects including planting a new school garden; working with the Woodland Trust to plant saplings in our school grounds; saving energy with our ‘Switch Off Fortnight’; taking part in the Great British Bird Watch; supporting the ‘Keep Britain Tidy’ litter campaign; planting 600 spring bulbs in our grounds; promoting active travel to and from school and organising a Woodland Trust ‘Tree Champion’ competition. On Monday 16th September we were delighted to welcome the Mayor of Doncaster, Mrs Ros Jones, to Copley Junior. She met with the children in the Eco Council and the ecocouncillors from last year and found out about all the eco-projects they had organised. Then, to the applause of the whole school, the eco councillors and the Mayor walked along the path to our flag pole and we raised our Eco Schools ‘Green Flag’. What a fantastic occasion and our celebration was made all the more special by our visit from the Mayor. We are also delighted to share that we have been awarded the Woodland Trust Gold ‘Green Tree’ Award! Congratulations to the Eco Council and all the pupils in school who support our eco projects. You can find out more about the work of our Eco Council at: https://www.copley.doncaster.sch.uk/our-community/eco-council

We have had a busy and exciting start to the school year, with every class going out on an educational visit to launch their new creative learning project. Year 3 ‘Scrummdiddlyumptious’ Year 3’s first project of the year is ‘Scrummdiddlymptious’! This is a design technology project, in which children learn about healthy eating and create their own fruit smoothies. To launch their new project Year 3 had a fun-filled visit to the John Bull Rock Factory in Bridlington. Whilst there, the children were able to roll a piece of rock with their initial inside and made chocolate lollipops. Year 4 Viking Attack! To start their project on ‘Raiders and Traders’ Year 4 have been on an exciting trip to Murton Park, to fully experience what it was like to be a Viking. Throughout the day the children got to be craftsmen, shaping and decorating their own individual pots and farmers, preparing the land to ensure the crops would grow. They ground the flour for bread-making and collected wood, and they also learned how to be powerful Viking guards.

Year 5 Launch into Space As part of their creative learning project on ‘Stargazers’, Year 5 voyaged to the National Space Centre in Leicester. There were so many interactive exhibits and presentations to explore, which offer a fantastic range of learning opportunities. Year 6 Evacuees Year 6 children from Copley Junior School were evacuated from Doncaster to Murton Park to start their project on ‘A Child’s War’. On arrival, they were met by an evacuation officer who escorted them to the village hall. During their visit, children experienced what life was like for children during World War Two. Activities included: washing and ironing clothes; making farmhouse crunch and butter; blast taping windows; carpet making; air raid drills and most children’s favourite - extinguishing a small incendiary bomb! We look forward to sharing more school news next month. Best wishes, E.A. Crayton, Head teacher

DANUM PROBUS CLUB Danum Probus Club is an organisation for men who have retired or are semi-retired from their profession, business or other employment who want to maintain a social network with others who have similar interests. The Club meets on the first and third Mondays of the month at Town Moor Golf Club, Bawtry Road, Belle Vue, Doncaster at 10am. At this meeting we have a speaker, their subjects covering a wide variety of interests. (see www.probusonline.org/danum for the ongoing programme). Ladies and guests are invited to the Club’s Spring and Autumn Lunches and also to the Annual holiday which is usually in late June or thereabouts. Members also have their own lunches in mid summer and December. In the summer months the Crown Green Bowling Seaton play on the Armthorpe Community Centre greens. On August 19 our speaker was John Brown who is the current Vice-President of the Club. Before retirement, John was as a property surveyor by profession, and his talk was based on the memories of the many years he spent working in Doncaster and the surrounding area. After a brief history of his family firm, he outlined the many strands of knowledge needed to succeed as a surveyor, went on to tell us about related subjects which have a strong bearing on the work done in his profession such as finance and geology, and concluded with some examples of work done in the area. This was a fascinating insight into a subject which touches most of us when buying property. Tony Cowley was the speaker on September 3 with his presentation on “Vintage Motorcycles”. Tony, a member of the Vintage Motor, talked about his love for older machinery with the centrepiece being a 1919 Sunbeam motorcycle which he brought with him, and was on display for all to see at the Golf Club where we meet. This motorcycle is one of several he now owns, having gradually reduced his “stock” from 36 over then past few years. Tony talked about the many rallies that he had been on, the interest his motor cycles had created when on these rallies, and the friends he had made as a result of ownership of vintage machines. In October our speakers will be Malcolm Frost with “Cock o’ the North” on the 7th, and on 21st Dave Adgar on “the Berlin Wall”. The Ladies’ Autumn Luncheon will be on Thursday 17th October. Any interested men who would like to come to these meeting as a visitor to see what we do, with a view to joining if you like us, please call either Des Parks (01302 856188), George Kirk (07808191211) or Geoff Firth (01302 849734) for more information or come to a meeting and introduce yourself to the President or Secretary at the front table.
