Welcome
to the September issue of
Sprotbrough Arrow As Summer comes to an end, it has been so lovely to see some of our usual activities return with people being able to meet up and enjoy socialising once again. Congratulations to all our local students who received their GCSE and A’ level results in August. It has been a record year and must come as a relief for many after the chaos of the last 18 months. Good luck to everyone starting new schools, colleges, 6th forms, universities or work. I hope you are given every opportunity to follow your dreams. The deadline for the October issue is Wednesday 15th September. The October issue will be distributed the last full weekend in September.

Sprotbrough Orchard Infant School Our last week of term was, as usual, a busy one! Everyone enjoyed our annual picnic on the last Friday of term and although parents weren’t permitted to join us this year, they all had fun in the sun eating their packed lunch on the field. There were smiles all round and the extended lunch break was just what they needed after working hard all year. The Year 2 staff firmly believed that our children had already missed out on so much recently and although their usual leavers visit was unachievable, they had been busy planning lots of exciting things. Specifically, they planned for children to take part in a leaver’s party on Thursday 15th July. Children brought their ‘party clothes’ to change into once the school day had ended and spent some quality time with their friends before the end of term. Children wrote invitations to members of staff asking them to join them in their leavers celebration so it would be fantastic if they could all attend. They enjoyed the DJ and karaoke, an ice cream van plus star guest appearances! After the most challenging couple of years, we would like to wish our leavers the very best of luck in their new adventures at their new schools. We hope that all of our children have relaxed and enjoyed their summer holidays ready to return to school refreshed and recharged for our next set of adventures J

We are very fortunate to have seasoned therapist Andy Shakeshaft from Essential Ayurveda to join us at the library on the 28th of September at 6.00 pm to share his knowledge of harmonizing stress. Andy is an experienced holistic therapist that works with herbs, diet and lifestyle interventions to help combat stress and balance the nervous system. We have specifically made this event for the evening to support those who work long days and require some guidance on managing modern living challenges. This event may lead to other classes that support health, wellbeing and longevity.

Doncaster Rambler’s A local walk from Fishlake Every now and then we have a walk which ends almost before it begins! At under five miles the Fishlake circuit is exactly that, as soon as we’d set off it felt like we were back at the beginning. Today we were joined by Henry and his mum Tanisha and his Aunty (with an unpronounceable name) as well as local resident Stuart whose honey is prized among the village retailers, and is also know for calming barking dogs. The remaining crew were from among our regular local short walkers. We began at the Village Green where there was enough parking for us all, and we set off east along the River Don embankment. It’s hard to imagine now what it must have been like here in November 2019 as water levels rose over the top. Luckily this two-mile stretch was saved from the worst. At Ferry Road we turned left to pick up Peatland Way / Thorne Round Walk which we tracked for just over ½ mile before breaking off and heading north towards Hazelhurst Farm. After a short stretch of road, we picked up a wide footpath heading south, before turning right on Pinfold Lane then continuing on to Mill Field Road then heading south back towards Fishlake on East Field Road. Just before Trundle Lane we turned right onto Dirty Lane to reach the embankment this time Stuart showing us where water breached and flooded the houses below. Because we made good time most of the group headed off to The Old Butchers café for a welcome coffee. Thanks to everyone who came along P.O.I The Peatlands Way is a 50 mile footpath route designed to link the communities of the Humberhead Peatlands...The walk includes the first permissive paths across the famous Thorne and Hatfield Moors, wildlife sites of national and European importance. The Thorne Round Walk is based on the course of the River Don, its associated waterways and immediately surrounding countryside. As its name suggests, the `round walk' may be taken clockwise or anticlockwise, with various starting points, but the most popular one is The Delves. The walk is approximately 18.5 km (11.5 miles), which may be shortened to about 13 km (8 miles) by using the short-cut across the River Don.
