Community News Yorkshire Main Heritage Trust Newsletter This September will mark the 30th anniversary of the closure of Yorkshire Main Colliery. This changed our Village from a thriving vibrant community to one that was unrecognisable. The strong Community cohesion achieved during the life of the Colliery, and supported by our local institutions, soon began to unravel. We all witnessed the infrastructure crumbling year after year, with the green shoots of recovery taking over 25 years to emerge from the burned out housing estates. On Saturday September 5th, the Heritage Trust are holding an event in the Miners Memorial Garden, followed by entertainment in Edlington Top Club. We will be unveiling and presenting to the Community a replica of the Unions 1920 Banner funded by the Heritage Lottery fund. This was made with the support of Northern Banners and used art work provided by students from Sir Thomas Wharton Community College. Strap lines for the Banner poles have been provided by the family of primary schools. We will also be presenting a Timeline of the Collieries proud history imbedded in to the large stone in the corner of the garden. This was sponsored by Keepmoat, and will be supplemented by a piece of Pit Art sponsored by Profab Engineering. During the event in the Garden, entertainment will be provided by City of Sheffield Pipe Band, Charlotte Leese vocalist, plus performances by local community groups. Speakers at the event will be Michael Dugher MP, Tosh MacDonald, President of ASLEF, former Edlington residents & Chris Skidmore, Chairman Yorkshire Area NUM & David Douglass, author & former NUM official. Following the event in the garden a reunion will be held in the Top Club, with folk music & a Gig supported by top bands for the younger generation. On site catering will be available in the car park adjacent to the club. Bringing back the Collective Spirit Keep the Faith Chairman Frank Arrowsmith, Secretary Andy Summers Nigel Ball Vice Chair, Peter Martin Treasurer Trustees: Rob Conroy, Jim Mourning, Jim Cook.

Year 6 Winners of the 2015 Curriculum Prizes and Head teacher’s Award
Well Done to Our Year 6 Leavers We will miss our Year 6 pupils, as they have been such an engaging group of pupils and they have demonstrated great enthusiasm and commitment to their learning. We wish them all the best for the future as they move to secondary school in September and look forward to hearing about their successes in the future. Our Year 6 Graduation Ceremony was a lovely event in July and was so well attended by all the Year 6 pupils, parents/carers, staff, governors and relatives. The formal part of the evening saw speeches made by the Head teacher and Mr Parks, Governor. Each child was presented with their Leavers’ Certificate to the applause of the audience. The formal part of the evening concluded with the presentation of the Curriculum Prizes and the Head teacher’s Awards. Winners of the awards were presented with their trophies, engraved with their name, to keep as a memory of their achievement at Copley Junior School. Following the Graduation Ceremony, we enjoyed the informal part of the evening – a hog roast, refreshments and many opportunities for photographs!

DON GORGE COMMUNITY GROUP AND DON CATCHMENT RIVER TRUST A workshop held on 6 July 2015 was very helpful in defining the application to the Heritage Lottery Fund for those of us involved in improving the River Don and its environs. The result of the application will be heard in September and the aim of the project is to reconnect people, communities and decision makers back to the River Don and its rich natural, cultural, built and industrial heritage. It is hoped that grant funding will be available to modify five weirs which will improve access for salmon to their breeding grounds. This, however, is only part of the plan as it is hoped that two apprenticeships will be available, along with skill development and events. Finally, it aims to create a heritage trail between Sheffield and Doncaster. It is hoped that volunteer groups and ‘friends of’ groups will also be formed to maintain the improving conditions along the length of the river. The bid is for £1.2 million, with matching funding of £200,000 already having been promised from elsewhere. The Don Gorge Community Group is already playing a part in this and its volunteer group does good work between Conisbrough and the A1(M) bridge. They are currently improving the area near the fish pass on the south side of Sprotborough Falls and would welcome others to join them. Similar groups are operating in other areas, but more are needed if the length of the Don is to be covered; in the coming months possibilities for new groups in our area will be explored in the Denaby Main, Hexthorpe, Balby, Hyde Park and Doncaster areas. The brilliant news that the first spawned salmon had recently been found in the River Dearne near Pastures bridge is a great indicator that the river is being cleaned up and that the fish pass at Sprotborough is already achieving results. To have reached the size it was when it was caught, the first in more than 150 years, it is thought that its parents must have scaled Sprotborough Weir shortly after the pass was completed in 2014. Salmon was once very common in the Don as far as Sheffield, but the industrial revolution and resulting pollution of the river soon put an end to that.
To enable further progress for our group, we would like to create a ‘Friends of the Don Gorge Community Group’, to enable greater access to those with an interest in our area of concern in particular, and to this end would like to hear from anyone who might be interested in helping us to start this. I do my best by running a website and a blog, but have limited knowledge of social media and practical help in setting up and running such a scheme would be particularly welcome. It is then hoped that ‘friends’ could be informed of events we would like to run and even help organise them. I feel there are many interested and talented people out there who already have the skills we need. Our committee is short of representatives and we are very stretched in trying to do anything which would achieve our aims. As shown here, there are 21 weirs along the River Don between Doncaster and Beeley Woods, nine of which are already passable by salmonids. Seven passes are being planned by other agencies, but the remaining five, which have no owners, come within this project.

A group of people living with dementia and their carers enjoyed a free trip to the coast on Tuesday 14 July thanks to Doncaster charity DonMentia. The trip, which was arranged by Rotherham Doncaster and South Humber NHS Foundation Trust (RDaSH) Carer Governor and DonMentia founder Eileen Harrington, saw 28 people travel from Doncaster to Cleethorpes by train for a great day out, enjoying the sights and sounds of the seaside, along with a traditional fish and chip lunch on the seafront at The Punch Bowl Restaurant. Eileen who is also Chair of the Doncaster Dementia Forum said: “I’m delighted so many people came to Cleethorpes with us! “Caring for a loved one with dementia is a full time commitment, and the thought of arranging a day out can be a daunting prospect alone, but travelling in a group means there’s lots of extra support. “Going on a day trip is a wonderful way to remember happy times, and visiting places with interesting things to do and see can bring great pleasure and enjoyment to everyone, regardless of their age or medical condition.” The group enjoyed the extra support of Police Community Support Officer (PCSO) Amanda Cooper of British Transport Police (BTP), who safely escorted them throughout their day, as part of BTP’s ongoing commitment to helping people with dementia to feel more comfortable about travelling on the railway.
