Welcome to the September issue of the Sprotbrough Arrow Oh my goodness, what a sizzling summer! Not only have we had one of the warmest summers for some time, but we have enjoyed it whilst basking in the glory of our super Olympians. Team GB (which includes Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland) have done us all proud and inspired another generation of sports enthusiasts. The funding from the Lottery has been put to good use and allowed our athletes to reach their full potential. I hope our state funded schools are able to invest in more sporting opportunities from primary school age so all children benefit from the Rio Legacy! This months issue has been delayed by a week. You should hopefully have your copy before 5th September.
The deadline for the October issue will be Wednesday 14th September. The Arrow will be delivered by 5th September.
Best wishes Michelle Sidebottom Website www.arrowpublications.co.uk E-mail michelle@arrowpublications.co.uk Mobile 07795 387937

FISHING TASTER DAY GREAT SUCCESS The weathermen promised a mixed day and we certainly got more than we bargained for. Rain in the morning, rain at mid-day and an absolute deluge at closing time, when we ended up like drowned rats as we dismantled the gazebo. But it didn’t deter the youngsters. From 10 o’ clock, they were arriving to take the bait and throughout the day over 50 sat on their boxes with mums or dads in attendance, receiving instruction and dangling their lines in the canal in the hope of catching fish. Surprisingly, to me anyway, many did and were thrilled to do so, even if they were only small ones. The Canal & Rivers Trust were equally thrilled with the response, so I suppose we should look out for more of the same at some time. The start given us when the Co-op sponsored the clean-up near the fish pass has encouraged our volunteers so that anyone now looking over the bridge side will see the great strides that have been made in clearing the balsam. It will grow back of course, but we aim to keep on top of it throughout the summer and will see how successful we have been by the time the seeding period is over. Well done everyone who has helped so far. I have been quite despondent over the litter problem in the last few weeks. It seems to be everywhere. I have phoned the council twice to empty bins, which they have done, but it continues to be a problem throughout the gorge from the Sprotborough side all the way up the hairpin bend to Warmsworth. Signs of drug use have also been found on the car park, along with takeaway food cartons, etc, and reported to the police, who will be keeping an eye on the situation. Users beware! We have recently started a friends group so that we can share information about events which are taking place; anyone who would like their name adding to the list, please email me and I will do so. There is no cost involved, it is just a communication tool, so don’t be shy.

Community News WARMSWORTH LADIES’ CLUB
Launch of new Parent and Toddler group, Sprotbrough
It is with sadness that we announce that Sprotbrough Park Playgroup and Toddlers will not reopen in September. It started as a mums and toddlers group and over the years developed into an Ofsted registered playgroup. The committee would like to thank all of the staff, trustees, volunteers, children, families and friends who helped to make the group such a success. From Mid-September, Sprotbrough Park Methodist Church will take the reins in the running of a parent and toddler group, ‘Sprotbrough Park Playtime’. Open to all, the group will run during term time on Wednesday mornings between 09:30 – 11:00, at Sprotbrough Park Methodist Church, on Park Drive. To be kept up to date with the latest news, and launch date, please follow us on Facebook.com/ sprotplaytime, Twitter @sprotplaytime, or email sprotparkplaytime@gmail.com for more details.

Richmond Hill Primary Academy
Bon Voyage Year 6 Our Y6 pupils have now left primary school and have been enjoying a carefree summer before they start their next journey onto secondary school. During the last few days of their time with us, they experienced the delights of a residential visit to Hatfield Water Park. The weather was glorious as they ventured into the water and they even managed to learn how to make a camp fire without a drop of rain in sight. A perfect end to their primary years! Year 3 Charity Donation Y3 have been reading many texts throughout the year which have contained heroic cats and dogs. As a year group they decided that they would like to use their accumulated 100% attendance money to support animals who are not as fortunate, such as ‘Kaspar, Prince of Cats’ and ‘Shadow’ (Michael Morpurgo – author). They decided to make their donation to Mayflower Sanctuary in Bawtry, as it rescues abused and abandoned dogs and cats. Thank you Y3 for your caring thoughts!

Celebrating Success Richmond Hill Primary Academy celebrates pupils’ success in both academic and personal achievements throughout the year. All pupils are valued and positive affirmation and praise is abundant around the Academy. Pupils considered to highlight the Academy values are nominated by their class teacher and their peers and are celebrated at our annual Prize Night. In addition to this, pupils who have had the opportunity to represent Richmond Hill in a variety of competitive or presentational forums during the year, are also celebrated at our Presentation Ceremony. Empty Classroom Day The Empty Classroom Day is a day to celebrate and inspire learning and play outside the classroom. We got involved in this national celebration of the health and learning benefits that can be gained from the great outdoors.
I am hoping the Arrow readers would be able to help the charity Guide Dogs deliver its vital My Guide service in Doncaster and the surrounding areas. My Guide volunteers help people with sight loss to get out and about, by guiding them for an hour or so a week. Our volunteers play a vital part in enabling people who are blind or partially sighted to regain their independence, helping them to work towards goals such as going to the shops, visiting the gym or theatre, or accessing services in their local community. The My Guide service has continued to grow in recent years, and we have people in Doncaster waiting to use the service now. Our volunteers are carefully matched and help on a one-to-one basis. Their input can help someone with sight loss gain more confidence and freedom. The role requires two full days training initially and we request a DBS check. We provide support throughout, and reimburse all out-of-pocket expenses. It’s a great way to meet new people, make friends and make a real difference to someone in your community. Kelly France Engagement Officer, Guide Dogs Mobility Team (Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and South Yorkshire) For more information, email volunteer@guidedogs.org.uk, or call Louise Mullen for an informal chat on 0845 372 7424. Louis Clayton, Mia Parkinson & Ffion Hatch
An emotional day!
We congratulate all our students on their A Level exam success, especially those who as a result of hard work have made good progress from their GCSE results. 100% of students gained at least one A Level pass and 94% of our Emily Simpson Year 13 graduates attained passes in two or more A Levels. We had a very busy morning in college supporting students in securing their University destinations through the UCAS system. Keith Binks & Alex Nelder Several were successful in upgrading from their accepted unconditional offers to preferred alternative degrees as a result of better than expected results. Others secured Higher Level Apprenticeships, including Ffion Hatch and Shaunna Turner-Flynn who will take up much sought after apprenticeships with the NHS. The NHS will fund Shaunna’s degree as she trains as a Pathology Laboratory Assistant. A number of students have chosen this career route as an alternative to University this year. We have many students heading off to local Universities in Sheffield, Leeds, Hull, York and Lincoln whilst a few are heading further afield. Alex Nelder with two A*s, two As and a B is looking forward to his Chemical Engineering degree course at Sheffield University. Emily Simpson with one A* and three As had an anxious wait with family, friends and a Headteacher with everything crossed, to finally hear at 3pm she had secured her place at Corpus Christi College, Oxford to study Chemistry. Emily is a true ambassador for our College; we are really proud of her and haven’t stopped smiling since the call finally came through! We are delighted for all our students and will miss them as they start the next stage of their lives. We hope they will all stay in touch and be part of our Alumni. Last year’s Head Boy, Danny Philips, having just achieved a ‘First’ in his first year Engineering degree at Sheffield came in to support his friends and said how much he had missed the supportive environment of Sir Thomas Wharton. It was also fantastic to hear on this day from one of our former students, Natalie Harrison. Natalie has just graduated with a First Class Honours Degree from Lincoln University and attained the Chartered Institute of Marketing Award for best student in marketing for 2016. She has just taken up a position as Product Manager at Melstrom Health Care. Well done Natalie! A Level results day is always an emotional day and a highlight of the year. This was no exception and a delight to be part of.
