W

elcome to the September issue of the Sprotbrough Arrow. A huge well done to Sprotbrough Scouts club and all the other volunteers who made the Sprotbrough Gala/Festival and Road Race such a success. The weather was glorious and the locals turned out to celebrate this annual community event. Funds were raised for the scouts as well as other community groups. These events are vital to the community and any support you give is a valued contribution. The race results in full can be found on the scouts website with highlights in this month’s Arrow. Many young adults will have just recently received their GCSE and A 'level results. I hope all the hard work has paid off and their results enable them to follow their dreams!

The deadline for the October issue is Wednesday 13th September. The magazine will be delivered by the end of September. For advertising information, please drop me an email.

This gorgeous boy is Rocky, a three year old Border Collie cross. Rocky is a lovely, friendly boy- a typical energetic Collie, and we are looking for an active home for him where he will get plenty of exercise. He is ok with other dogs and has lived with young children, although he may be a bit too bouncy for tinies! Rocky is neutered, fully vaccinated and micro-chipped. If you are interested in meeting this lovely boy, give Isle Rescue a call on 01427 728705

School News from Copley Junior School Year 6 Graduation Our Year 6 Graduation Evening was a lovely event. All our Year 6 leavers were presented with their graduation certificate and our annual awards were presented: English Award 2017: Morgan LC and Evie C Maths Award 2017: Megan H and Sidnee K Science Award 2017: Harvey P Sports Award 2017: Sophie M Arts Award 2017: Olivia M and Freya B The Head teacher’s Award is given in recognition of the demonstration of the key learner values which we hold dear at Copley Junior School. These include academic endeavour, cheerfulness, getting fully involved in school life, integrity, showing a good example to and caring for others and enjoying all that the school offers. Head teacher’s Award 2017: Aleesha K and Lucy R Following the Graduation Ceremony, we enjoyed the informal part of the evening – a hog roast, refreshments and many opportunities for photographs! We wish all our pupils great success as they start at their new secondary schools.

Times Tables Rock Stars ‘Rock Wrangle’ We held our Times Tables Rock Star Celebration Day at the end of term and the children (and staff!) looked fabulous! After a final few weeks of practising times tables, all children had their final assessment using our Times Tables Rock Stars programme. The progress of all children was celebrated and five children with the highest scores for accuracy and speed went through to our ‘Rock Wrangle’ event. This saw year group competitions against the clock, supported by rock music backing tracks and our rock star audience of children. The year group finalists all received a certificate and the year group winners were presented with an engraved gold medal. After a final tense round, our 2017 Times Tables Rock Star Champion was announced as Grace T in Year 6. Music Evening and Talent Show Our Music Evening and Talent Show saw performances from the two Year 4 classes who have Samba lessons, as well as from the groups of children learning to play guitar, flute, clarinet, alto saxophone, brass and violin. In addition we saw an eclectic range of talents from children in each year group, including science magic, blindfold piano playing, dance, electric guitar solo, piano solo and vocalists. We look forward to sharing more school news next month. Best wishes, E.A. Crayton, Head teacher

Citizens Advice North East Doncaster on hand to help with rollout of Universal Credit. Citizens Advice North East Doncaster is helping people get ready for Universal Credit as it rolls out in full across Doncaster. Universal Credit is a new benefit which helps people on a low income or not in work meet their living costs. It combines six benefits, including Housing Benefit and Working Tax Credit, into a single monthly payment. At the moment in Doncaster Universal Credit is only available to single jobseekers but from early in October 2017 parents, couples and people who can’t work because of their health who make a new claim will also receive it. Citizens Advice North East Doncaster is highlighting what changes are due to take effect, namely around how Universal Credit is paid, so that people can prepare before applying for the new benefit. The three changes Citizens Advice North East Doncaster says people need to be aware of are : Universal Credit payments are made in arrears once at the end of the month, rather than being paid every week. Payments will go straight into a claimant's bank account. This means people may need to set up their own standing orders for expenses like rent if it was paid directly to their landlord under the old Housing Benefit system. New Universal Credit applications, and any change in your circumstances, need to be made online. With people facing a 5 to 6 week wait for their first Universal Credit payment, Citizens Advice North East Doncaster is encouraging people to apply for an advance payment if they’re concerned about meeting their living costs in the meantime. Citizens Advice North East Doncaster has helped many people with a Universal Credit claim in the last year. The bulk of queries relate to people wanting to know how they make a claim and if they’re eligible to do so. They are now seeing rising numbers of people who are worried about how full rollout will affect them and their families.

Sprotbrough Festival/Gala 15th/16th July 2017 Thank you to all who supported the event whether it be volunteering, donating or attending. We had a fabulous day and the sun was shining! The Saturday evening was superb with Pizzas, Hog Roasts, Fair rides and music yet again from the amazing band The Torn, supported by the talented up and coming artist Toby Burras. On Sunday the field was bursting with rides, activities and first class stalls we were all spoilt for choice! The runners were out in force and all gave a fantastic effort despite the warm weather. Well done to all who took part.

As I’m sure you can appreciate the whole event takes a lot of organisation and we rely greatly on our volunteers, therefore we were all extremely pleased to receive lots of positive feedback and we do hope you join us again next year!
