Well, here we are into September already and we do hope you all enjoyed the summer whether at home or away. We are so grateful to everyone who has raised money on our behalf this past month. The Shoe Room in Priory Walk raised £1,135 which really took us by surprise! Stratstone BMW on Wheatley Hall Road held a coffee morning and afternoon tea at their showroom and made £194. Janine sent us photos of the food which made our mouth water. Space doesn’t allow us to mention everyone here who donated, but please check out our website for more information. Are you planning on taking part in one of the marathon or half marathon races (such as the Great North Run on 8th September) or any other sporting events? Or are you simply wanting to organise an event on our behalf? Please do get in touch with us as we can supply you with T-shirts, etc., and can advertise your event on our website. We are making preparations for our annual Memory Tree event in the Frenchgate Centre. This year it will be from Monday, 25th November until Friday, 20th December. We have some lovely new items which you can buy in memory of loved ones and will have more information for you in the next issues. Don’t forget, we are always in need of volunteers and you will be made very welcome. Our contact details are: 22 Wood Street, Doncaster DN1 3LW (entrance by the side of Kerry Gough Florists), second floor (lift available), Room 209. Tel. 01302 325029. Email: info@dcdt.co.uk. Website: dcdt.co.uk. It doesn’t matter how small your donation, it all goes towards the biopsy machine for Doncaster Royal Infirmary. Our charity has always believed that local money should support local people.

Doncaster Pathfinders Walking Club

On Sunday 11th August Doncaster Pathfinders Walking Club were up in North Yorkshire enjoying the stunning countryside around Bolton Abbey and Grassington. The 'A' walkers set off for a 12 mile walk from Bolton Bridge and followed the Dales Way alongside the river Wharfe. There were great views of Bolton Abbey which has stood on this site since 1154. We continued alongside the river to Appletreewick where we had our pub stop at the Craven Arms. The river was in full flow after all the rain we have had recently and was quite a spectacular sight. After lunch, we once more followed the river to the pretty village of Burnsall and then onto our final destination of Grassington where we were picked up by the coach. Our 'B' walkers completed a very similar but slightly shorter route of 8.5 miles, also following the river Wharfe with a lunch stop at the Craven Arms. Their walk finished at Burnsall where they boarded the coach to make the short journey to Grassington to collect the rest of the walkers. If you would like to join us on our next walk to Eyam in the Peak District on 8th September please search for Doncaster Pathfinders Walking Club on Facebook or visit our website www.doncasterpathfinders.org.uk. If you can't make it in September, why not join us on 6th October September when we are back in North Yorkshire at Ampleforth.

DANUM PROBUS CLUB Danum Probus Club is an organisation for men who have retired or are semi-retired from their profession, business or other employment who want to maintain a social network with others who have similar interests. The Club meets on the first and third Mondays of the month at Town Moor Golf Club, Bawtry Road, Belle Vue, Doncaster at 10am. At this meeting we have a speaker, their subjects covering a wide variety of interests, (see www.probusonline.org/danum for the ongoing programme). Ladies and guests are invited to the Club’s Spring, Autumn and Bowling Lunches and also to the Annual holiday which is usually in late June or thereabouts. Members also have their own lunches in mid summer and December. In the summer months the Crown Green Bowling Section play on the Armthorpe Community Centre greens. The second meeting in July was the Members’ Lunch which took place at the golf club. Members spent a pleasant three hours eating a splendid lunch and conversing amongst each other. Then on 5 August our guest speaker was David Townend (not Tracey Bull as advertised) whose subject was “The Yorkshire Air Ambulance”. David, who is is a volunteer with YAA, took us through its history, starting in 2000 with one second hand Russian helicopter to the present day with the purpose built headquarters at Nostell Priory and two new Airbus H145 helicopters. The helicopters are piloted by professional helicopter pilots and the para-medics are secondees from the Yorkshire Ambulance Service. The event which really brought the Yorkshire Air Ambulance to the public’s attention was its transfer of Richard Hamilton to hospital after his near fatal crash at Elvington in 2008. There are now on average four calls a day for the YAA, but during the Grand Departe of the Tour de France it went up to about forty a day. After the talk David answered a series of questions, and everyone present enjoyed this informative and thought provoking presentation. On 2 September Tony Cowley’s subject is “Vintage Motor Cycles” and on 16 September Philip Caine will travel from “Barrow to Baghdad and Back”. Any interested men who would like to come to these meeting as a visitor to see what we do, with a view to joining if you like us, please call either Des Parks (01302 856188), George Kirk (07808191211) or Geoff Firth (01302 849734) for more information or come to a meeting and introduce yourself to the President or Secretary at the front table.

Head teacher’s Award 2019: Omar K and Amelia F Following the Graduation Ceremony, we enjoyed the informal part of the evening – a hog roast, refreshments and many opportunities for photographs, including those taken in our CSA funded photo booth! We wish all our pupils continued success as they start at their new secondary schools.

Year 5 ‘Beast Creator’ Express Year 5 shared their learning about minibeasts at their parent express. Parents/carers and relatives were treated to a drama presentation, in which each group of minibeasts tried to persuade the audience of their superiority to other minibeasts. After sharing how worms, spiders, bees, butterflies and spiders all support the wonderful world of nature, parents took part in a secret ballot to see which group of minibeasts ruled the day. Happy Birthday to Copley In July we celebrated Copley’s 40th birthday party. We had a lovely birthday ‘lunch in a bag’ provided by our kitchen team and it was great to see children chatting and relaxing as they enjoyed their lunch. Thank you to CSA members as they kindly designed and funded a commemorative gift for each child – a keyring with a torch function. The children loved them! We look forward to sharing more school news next month. Best wishes, E.A. Crayton

Cliff proves a healthy body can lead to a healthy mind It’s a Mans World at slimming World Having retired to Yorkshire to help with the care of his grandchildren Cliff HammondReed learned that losing weight not only helps him be healthy but helps with mental health too. After losing 2 stone at his local group in just 6 weeks Cliff wanted to share his story so others know that losing weight will help the mind as well as the body. Cliff started Slimming in September 2017. Cliff says “Being a suffer of depression and anxiety my weight does fluctuate depending on my mood but before joining Slimming World I had no control measure and found that

my weight was only going up and up, this acted as part of a vicious cycle making my mood lower every time I got on the scales.” Cliffs medical condition meant that he was on antidepressant medication as well as sleeping tablets to help him sleep, in addition he did little exercise, no housework and struggled to interact with people. His GP felt his weight was directly related to his mental health and that reducing weight through better diet and exercising would improve his mood and physical wellbeing.

Having low mood & no self-confidence it took Cliff a while to wrestle with the idea of attending a Slimming World group but his very supportive daughter suggested they attend together and the rest is history as they say. Cliff says “From the moment I walked through the doors I felt I was among friends and as a result lost 5½lbs in my first week and 4½ in my second week, I’d swapped my foods from eating fast food, such as fish & chips & KFC, as well as snacking on chocolate and sweets. I now eat meals like cooked breakfasts, roast dinner chilli’s, curries and I’m loving it! My Slimming World Consultant couldn’t have been more helpful”. The Consultant keeps the group on track with oodles of support as well as feeding new ideas around Image Therapy and Cliff believes it wouldn’t have been so easy without the Consultant recognising when he’d been in a low mood and needed help to keep on track. “I have been at target for a while now but without the support of my group I know I’d just slip back again to my old habits” Losing his excess weight has made a huge difference to Cliffs life now being physically fit, more willing to interact with people due to a higher level of confidence and also his mood is more manageable without medication. He has reduced antidepressant medication by 75% and no longer relies on sleeping tablets to get a good night sleep. He says he feels more in control of his life focusing his spare time on eating healthily using the Slimming World Extra Easy Plan and Image Therapy. “My health has improved, I’ve reduced medication, improved my exercise regime and I’ve found a way to live life and stay in control too! Slimming World’s Extra Easy plan means I never feel hungry or deprived. I love to cook and have found ways to still enjoy all of my favourite meals just cooked differently. It’s so easy and I can still eat Lasagne, Chilli as well as enjoying a full English breakfast with all the trimmings, oh and the odd G&T. I really couldn’t believe I could eat so much and still lose weight. Slimming World Image Therapy has led to me taking up yoga, walking, cycling, swimming and of course the proverbial gym!” Cliff has trained as a Consultant for Slimming World, the UK’s leading slimming club, and is delighted to be re-launching a group in Sprotbrough as a new Consultant on Thursday 20th June. “Losing weight and gaining control has made such a difference to my life, I feel so much more confident and am looking forward to sharing my journey and supporting my members to achieve their own weight loss dreams. I’m living my dream thanks to Slimming World”.
