elcome to the May issue of the Sprotbrough Arrow. I hope you all enjoyed the Easter break and the lovely sunshine we were blessed with in April! May brings us the promise of warmer weather as we glide towards summer but it’s a busy month for our young people with assessments throughout each school year and the start of GCSE’s for year 11. The very best of luck to all of you who are currently studying for your GCSE’s or other qualifications. I hope you get plenty of exercise outdoors to help you relax and take a break at what can be a very stressful time. I hope you enjoy reading up on primary school life and what has been going on in our villages. If you have any news that would help to raise awareness of your group or an event you are planning, please send the details to me before my deadline below. I will do my best to promote what goes on in Sprotbrough and Warmsworth. The deadline for the June issue will be Wednesday 17th May. The June Arrow will be delivered the last full weekend in May.

Community News Village Scout Group HQ Renovation Project

CHRISTIAN AID WEEK

14 - 20 MAY 2017

1st/36th St Peter's Warmsworth, Doncaster Scout Group has been in existence since 1953. The group owns it's own HQ building which was constructed by volunteers in the mid 70's. During this time, the group has been a vital component to the infrastructure of Warmsworth, as well as the wider scouting community of Doncaster. It has offered countless opportunities to generations of local children and has assisted with their social development.

This year when tens of thousands of people worldwide are fleeing conflicts and disasters, making dangerous journeys in search of safety, funds raised in Christian Aid Week will support refugees once again.

In addition, it's HQ building is also a hub, where community groups, and individuals from all backgrounds can come together for a variety of purposes.

So please give generously this year if you receive a Christian Aid Week envelope or have chance to attend a Christian Aid Week event or to give in any other way.

However, in recent times, the scout building has become increasingly difficult to maintain, and work is ongoing to keep it both open and serviceable. With this in mind, the group is now looking to refurbish their HQ, and is in the process of raising money to fund this project through an ongoing programme of fundraising activities and events.

Christian Aid Week was set up 60 years ago to support their work with refugees in Europe following the Second World War.

Thank you

It is hoped that local people will lend their support to this very worthy cause, and in doing so, help to create an environment that will be enjoyed by scouters and members of the public, for generations to come. We like to think that we are not just helping to build a scout hut, but we are helping to build futures. For further information on how to donate, please visit:

www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/ Hutrefurb4WarmsworthScouts On behalf of everyone involved with 1st/36th St Peter's Scout Group, and the community of Warmsworth, thank you for your kind support.

Richmond Hill Primary Academy A-buzz with excitement! Competitors from Richmond Hill, Loxley, Deer Park and [OTHER] took part in our annual InterSchool Spelling Bee on Friday 31st March. Pupils had taken part in Spelling Bees at each school and the three finalists from each school came together to take part in the nail biting final. Well done to the winner and runners up for their phenomenal work and well done to all of the finalists for reaching the final! Read the signs We were joined by Reception and Key Stage 1 parents for a Makaton Parents’ Workshop. Makaton is a language programme designed to support spoken language and is taught in many schools around the country. Our Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 parents joined us to learn some of the basic signs our pupils have been taught, such as animal names, basic greetings (‘hello’, ‘good bye’ and ‘thank you’) and names of family members (‘mother’, ‘father’, etc.) Thank you to all the parents who managed to come along, we hope you enjoyed the session! Opus 100 Percussion As part of Ridgewood School’s Opus 100 programme, three of our Y4 pupils have been learning percussion and are lucky enough to be able to learn on an electric drum kit! The three pupils have progressed from tapping a snare drum with their fingers to being sat at a full sized kit. Don Valley Festival Well done to the Richmond Hill Choir, who came 2nd at the Don Valley Festival! Regulars at the Don Valley Festival, our choir pulled out all the stops and did us all proud with another brilliant performance! Congratulations to everyone who participated! Star Status!

St John’s Ambulance On Monday 10th April St John Ambulance held a presentation evening at their Edlington Unit, Yorkshire Main Miners Welfare Yard, Edlington. Over the past year the adults, cadets and badgers within the Doncaster Area, have been fundraising to purchase two new Defibrillators (AED’s) for them to use out on First Aid events within Doncaster. With the money the volunteers have raised and the donations which have been received we have now been able to purchase two AEDs and two training machines to be used in Doncaster. One large donation was received from the Mayor of Hatfield David Fiennes-Gregory, who himself was an exmember of St John Ambulance in Doncaster as a child. Further donations were received from Edlington Town Council, the Asda at Harworth and a private donation from a retired volunteer of Edlington St John Ambulance unit together with a collection from the volunteers of units in Doncaster. The equipment purchased will be used at our units at Edlington, Arskey, Auckley and Thorne to teach the volunteers (cadets and adults) should they have to use an AED for real whilst out on duty. The two new AEDs will be out with us on events at both at the Keepmoat and the Racecourse as well as a variety of community and small events which we cover over the year in and around Doncaster. St John Ambulance have been in Edlington since 1930. We are situated in the car park of Yorkshire Main Miners Welfare, Edlington. Our volunteers range from Badgers at 7 years old to Cadets at 10 years old and adults from 18 years old. We are a voluntary organisation and most of the adult members have full time jobs away from St John and volunteer in our spare time. We cover a wide range of events in • Wallpaper Hanging Doncaster including Specialist Doncaster Rovers, Doncaster Belles, Dons • Emulsion & All Paintwork Rugby, Athletics, Races and Est. 1988 • Clean & Tidy Work Exhibitions at the • Reliable & Trustworthy Racecourse. We also cover smaller events in Doncaster • Quality Work at including fun runs, Reasonable Prices community galas, sponsored walks and bonfires. Some of volunteers also go into schools and other youth groups teaching first aid to children as well as teach first For a Free Quote Call aid to the badgers and cadets at our own unit.

School News from Copley Junior School

Success in the Spelling Bee Copley Junior’s Spelling Bee was a great success – and a lot of fun too! A huge well done to our spelling bee competitors from every year group and also to our enthusiastic pupil audience. We saw a very tightly contested competition with six rounds before a single mistake was made. Featured below are our medal winners! Congratulations to our 2017 Spelling Bee Champions from Darwin House! Year 4 Express Event – Romans It was lovely to see so many parents/carers and relatives at our ‘I am Warrior’ express event. The children worked very hard to put together such a varied and dramatic presentation. We saw descriptive soliloquies performed, a dramatic battle between Boudicca and her Celts and the Romans, Roman battle formations, a gladiator fight, fabulous project work and even Roman board games!

Comic Relief Fun Our Year 6 House leaders organised many fun activities to raise funds for Comic Relief including a themed school lunch, a red raffle, a bake sale, a non-uniform day, catwalk

assembly and ‘teacher challenges’, which saw adults in school sharing funny poems, jokes, wearing school uniform and even performing a cartwheel! Altogether, we raised an amazing £400.50 for Comic Relief, so thank you to everyone for your generous support. Gymnastics Success Well done to members of our gymnastics team, who have done so well to compete at county level by reaching the Yorkshire Championships. The children's performance was excellent and we are very proud to share they came 3rd for the whole of Yorkshire! Easter Activities Our school community filled St Mary’s Church for our Easter Service. Well done to children in Year 5 who presented the Easter story in verse and to Year 3 who sang two songs beautifully. Reverend Amanda commented how lovely it was to hear St Mary’s filled with joyful singing. Back at school, our Year 6 House leaders enjoyed organising competitions for their House members: Guess the Name of the Bunny (Hodgkin House); Easter Egg Brand Hunt (Einstein House); Easter Egg Design Competition (Darwin House) and an Easter Egg Hunt (Hawking House). We look forward to sharing more school news next month. Best wishes, E.A. Crayton Head teacher

This lovely boy is Ben, a young Lurcher who has been with the Rescue for several months. Ben is a lovely, laid-back, gentle boy who is great with people and very affectionate. He has nice manners, and walks very well on the lead. He is good with other dogs, but not cats and small furries, and would be best in a home with older children. Ben is constantly overlooked simply because of his colour, so please come and meet him – he is adorable. Ben is neutered, fully vaccinated and micro-chipped. Call Isle Rescue on 01427 728705 if you are interested in meeting this smashing boy.
