ur May issue is a playful take on three elements of happiness: wine, women and song. Our initial inspiration was Planned Parenthood’s second annual “Wine, Women & Shoes” fund-raiser, an idea conceived by Napa Valley vintner Elaine Honig. The idea of pairing wine with fund-raising and the arts seems to be a trend. CalPhil regularly presents “Music, Martinis and the Maestro” chamber music performances at the Castle Green and hosts an extravaganza called “Wine & Strings” each summer. Add to that Southwest Chamber Music’s “Blendings: Wine & Music” evenings at the Armory Center for the Arts and its 20th Anniversary Gala this month, and you’ve got a unique melange of fruitful philanthropy, arts and entertainment — all in exquisite taste. In our other features, the Instrumental Women Project shines as an organization devoted to encouraging women to join the jazz world. Plus, we get to know Lena L. Kennedy, the founder of Community Women of San Gabriel Valley, whose love of people led her to a surprising decision. Even though she had worked for Assemblywoman Carol Liu, Kennedy had never considered running for office — until now. Mixed in with those offerings are a new wine column by David McDonald of Mission Wines, Table Talk at the decidedly feminine and deliciously gourmet Scarlet Tea Room, a wedding garden vision at the Showcase House of Design, a peek inside the Women’s City Club at the Blinn House and more. Enjoy the merry month of May! By the way, guys, you’ll get your due next month — stay tuned for our sports-themed issue in June. —Julie Riggott

PASADENA SYMPHONY GALA GAMBLES … AND WINS! More than 300 supporters of The Pasadena Symphony attended La Nuit de Jeux, “The Night of Games,” in sometimes fierce but good-natured rivalry at faux roulette, craps and backgammon tables. The gamble more than paid off. The gala, held at the California Club courtesy of Alyce Williamson, raised more than $300,000 to benefit The Pasadena Symphony’s concerts and outreach programs. The event also honored longtime supporters Edith and Jack Roberts. “When the Robertses joined our symphony family, we drew a winning hand,” said Marian Cameron, who chaired La Nuit de Jeux. “They’re the King and Queen of our hearts.” However, the ultimate winners, says co-chair Barbara Steinwedell, are music lovers throughout Southern California. “The success of ‘The Night of Games’ enables The Pasadena Symphony to continue to offer the concerts and array of programs that our patrons have come to expect,” she explains. “Now we can start off our 80th anniversary season in 2007–2008 on a truly high note.” For more information, call (626) 793-7172, or visit www.pasadenasymphony.org. ‘Wine, Women & Shoes’

Vintner Elaine Honig teams with Planned Parenthood of Pasadena for a fun and flirtatious fund-raiser combining three fascinating components.

g 14 ~ MAY 2007 ~ ARROYO

BY RON GARMON ROUNDBREAKING CHARITY MAVEN ELAINE HONIG does some of her best work by poetic free association: “Sauvignon Blanc can be compared to a silver strappy sandal: bright, metallic, goes with everything. Cabernet is more like a black silk evening pump: classic and structured, supported by a backbone of tannin just as the shoe is supported by the heel. A Syrah, well, let's call it a red patent leather peep-toe pump: spicy and racy.” Honig, the creative and communications director of Honig Vineyard and Winery, is the founder of “Wine, Women & Shoes,” an inspired philanthropic innovation aimed at a sensitive, underappreciated demographic: women and their feet. That this constituency is everresponsive to stroking and pampering isn't much of a secret, but still one it took Honig to invent in a fit of wordplay. The final part of the triad came out of a discussion bemoaning the orthodox wine-and-cheese template for fund-raising events when the word “shoes” made a dramatic appearance in her flow of patter. “Shoes are easy to try on, you don't have to take your clothes off,” Honig enthuses. “Shoes don't make your hips look big or play into any body issue. Women love to talk about shoes, and it’s a total conversation-starter. We have

it going in 12 cities, Pasadena being one. We've now raised more than $1 million for women’s charities. What women do is network, and they're often curious about wine, so we make it easy and fun.” The result is a series of events held in cities like Dallas and Pensacola since 2005 to benefit UNICEF, museums, local women's services and Planned Parenthood chapters. Each one is a bacchanalia of comfort, indulgence, fun and flirtation for attendees. The length of the event varies from a single evening to (in the event's “pure form”) two days, with wine classes, fashion shows and socializing in between. There is a seminar called “Wine and Shoe Pairing” which helps initiates understand the near-mystical relationship between women, provocative footwear and wine made by Honig's family label. Comfort and luxury being at a premium for career women and young marrieds, this is an idea whose time has come clicking in on stiletto heels. “It creates an enormous amount of goodwill,” Honig says with a laugh. “We've actually tracked increased sales from areas where we've done benefits. I try to make it a win-win for everybody. We bring in wonderful, cute, accomplished men in —Continued on page 16 the community to carry the

Wine pairings make classical music even tastier. BY JULIE RIGGOTT

The enjoyment of wine has become an art. With the popularity of wine tastings and the abundance of exceptional California wineries, the beverage has gone beyond pairings with food. In the San Gabriel Valley, you can find it paired with some of your favorite classical music at these offerings from Southwest Chamber Music and CalPhil. When organizers from Southwest Chamber Music realized that people with sophisticated tastes tend to appreciate both classical music and wine, they thought, why not put them together? The idea took form two years ago when Artistic Director and Conductor Jeff von der Schmidt introduced “Blendings: Wine & Music.” “We wanted to combine two of the greatest pleasures in life,” says Communications Director Thu-Nga Dan. At the Armory Center for the Arts, patrons can enjoy wine with hors d’oeuvres while perusing artwork and even chatting with musicians before the one-hour open rehearsal and ensuing

discussion with von der Schmidt — and sometimes even the composer. Von der Schmidt has distinguished the ensemble by programming new music by living composers, like James Newton, in the same concert with traditional music from the classical repertoire, including Bach. Southwest Chamber Music also champions female composers, premiering and spotlighting locals such as Joan Huang and Elinor Remick Warren and international artists like Finland’s Kaija Saariaho, in programs also featuring famous names like Mozart. So “Blendings” was almost a natural extension of the group’s creative tendencies and penchant for

exciting combinations. The evening’s libations and food are paired with the theme of the music. For instance, for a May 18 event, wines from places such as Baja California and Latin America and food from a local Mexican restaurant will be followed by the music of Carlos Chávez, the single most important Mexican composer in the classical world. Southwest Chamber Music’s four CDs of Chávez’s complete cycle of chamber music earned them two Grammy Awards and a total of five nominations. The “Blendings” performance is a preview of Southwest Chamber Music’s Mexico City tour, where the ensemble will present a series of five concerts May —Continued on page 16 ARROYO ~ MAY 2007 ~ 15

shoes on silver trays and present them to the women like hors d'oeuvres. They flirt shamelessly; that's their job. The women love it. There have been two marriages, including mine.” “Wine, Women & Shoes” returns to Pasadena for the second year in a row on May 10 to benefit Planned Parenthood of Pasadena’s education and outreach programs in its service area of 23 cities from Glendale to Glendora. Deb Whitehouse, Planned Parenthood board member and local chair of the event, is delighted by the concept and impressed at the results. “Why this works so well for us at PP is we have a mature donor base and we are striving to attract younger people” she notes. “Those in their 20s through 40s have never had authority tell them they can't do things. Unless you've taken a course on it, you're unlikely to know the struggles of the women's movement. A lot of people in that age group take contraception for granted, others can't afford it, and others don't know about us. It's a marketing problem more than anything. “This attracts people from Junior League, YMCA, YWCA and people who are not otherwise involved in charitable organizations — which is great because we get contributions from these people,” she adds. “There's a myth that Planned Parenthood equals abortion, when that's only 3 percent of what we do. Our purpose is to provide affordable reproductive health care for women who are uninsured.” This year's “Wine, Women & Shoes” event will be held once again on the rooftop of the Pasadena Museum of California Art, with wine by Baldacci Vineyards, Chateau Potelle, Peju Province, Pretty Sally Estate and, of course, Honig Vineyards. There will be a raffle of $2,500 in jewelry courtesy of La Place Vendôme and fashions by Verona Shoes and Flutter. “It'll be a little different from last year,” Whitehouse reveals. “We did a runway fashion show; this year we have living mannequins scattered around the hall. They'll be the décor. The auction should be larger than last year, and we'll be raffling off shoes. “We want to have the same cocktail atmosphere and enjoy the fashions — not either/or,” she adds with a laugh. “Does that sound lushy?” AM “Wine, Women & Shoes” begins at 6 p.m. May 10 on the rooftop of the Pasadena Museum of California Art, 490 Union St., Pasadena. Please RSVP by May 3. For tickets or more information, call (626) 794-5737, or visit www.pppasadena.org. Guests will be treated to hors d’oeuvres, dinner, wine, music by Southwest Chamber musicians and students, and a silent auction featuring boutique wines and treasures collected during the ensemble’s travels to Southeast Asia. All proceeds will benefit Southwest Chamber Music educational programs. “Blendings: Wine & Music” will begin at 7 p.m. May 18 at the Armory Center for the Arts, 145 N. Raymond Ave., Pasadena. Tickets are $55 for wine and music; $10 to $28 for music only. The 20th Anniversary Gala starts with a tour at 4 p.m. May 6 at the Blacker House. Tickets start at $200. The California Philharmonic Orchestra brings “cocktail chic” to its programming with “Music, Martinis and the Maestro” and “Wine & Strings.” While CalPhil’s Festival on the Green summer concert series appeals to a diverse audience of thousands with its combination of classical, jazz, pops, Broadway and opera tunes, some of the classical music purists expressed interest in a more intimate setting and traditional repertoire. Maestro Victor Vener responded with “Music, Martinis and the Maestro” in winter 2004. The venue, the Romanesque Room at the Photo courtesy of Marcus Van Doren, TriMarc Imagery historic and architecturally appealing Castle Green, holds 250 guests, some at reserved tables ($50) and others in general admission seats ($30). Vaulted ceilings amplify the acoustic experience. Wine and martinis are poured before and even during the concert, and guests get to hear Vener, in his characteristically engaging manner, share stories about the pieces or the composers. Sometimes the musicians speak as well before picking up their bows and instruments to play. CalPhil Chairman of the Board John Whaley and Afterwards, musicians mingle and converse artist Nancy Klaphaack meet a new donor. informally with the audience. On May 20, patrons can enjoy a classy cocktail while enjoying music for violin, cello and piano, including Beethoven’s “Archduke Trio,” Op. 97, and Dvorak’s “Dumky Trio,” Op. 90. Then on June 9, CalPhil’s annual fund-raiser “Wine and Strings” promises a celebration at the Shakespeare Club with both classical and jazz music on stringed instruments, free-flowing libations (of course), live and silent auctions, buffet dinner and dessert, and maybe some other surprises. All proceeds support the music and programs of CalPhil. Vener, now in his 10th season as music director, has a reputation for making classical music accessible to both neophytes and aficionados. With the addition of these events, CalPhil has received an even greater response from audiences, giving a definite boost to the local classical scene. “Certain people have become more involved as donors or attendees,” says Mindy Kernc, head of publicity and marketing, “because they have the chance to be a part of the orchestral experience.” AM The bar opens for “Music, Martinis and the Maestro” at 1:30 p.m. May 20, with Vener speaking at 2:15 p.m. and the concert beginning at 3 p.m. in the Romanesque Room at Castle Green, 50 E. Green St., Pasadena. “Wine & Strings” runs from 6 to 10 p.m. June 9 at the Shakespeare Club, 171 S. Grand Ave., Pasadena. Tickets are $100. Instrumental to

The Instrumental Women Project gives female jazz musicians a chance to be heard. BY CARL KOZLOWSKI

l 18 ~ MAY 2007 ~ ARROYO

Left: Carol Chaikin, Robyn Javier and Cindy Shea. Above: Nedra Wheeler and Suzanne Morrisette. AQUETTA SHAMBLEE GREW UP PRACTICING TO become a professional jazz drummer, banging the skins for endless hours while dreaming of playing before appreciative audiences the world over. But when she went to study at Pacific Christian College in Fullerton, she had to major in business because the school didn’t have the programs she needed to excel in music. But she never stopped loving jazz, and eight years ago she was able to find fulfillment in founding the Instrumental Women Project (IWP), an organization that spotlights the vast contributions that women are making to a style of music that has traditionally been dominated by male performers. In addition to putting on an annual extravaganza on Sept. 28 at the Ford Amphitheatre in Hollywood, the group has also found a way to help numerous causes by performing benefits. “I’ve been told by the musicians who work with us that we’re the only jazz program of its kind in the country. Everyone who’s in our flagship production at the Ford makes their living at it, and for the last five out of seven years we’ve been picked as the LA Times Best Bet for jazz entertainment the weekend we had our show,” says Shamblee, who lives in Monrovia. “We have had anywhere

from eight to 29 women onstage, and the person who really is credited with the format we use — edutainment — is jazz vocalist Phyllis Battle.” It was Battle who introduced Shamblee to Vanessa Burch, a piano player who traveled with singer Natalie Cole’s band for a decade. Battle and Burch have become a formidable team, with Battle serving as the artistic director and Burch serving as music director of the IWP for the past three years. Other notable IWP performers include Vi Redd, who, Shamblee proudly notes, is the inspiration for the IWP’s mission of ensuring women get their due; Redd “was considered the female Charlie Parker” and played for greats such as Count Basie, Max Roach and Dizzy Gillespie. Another standout is James Janisse, who is easily noticed as the only male onstage. “He’s our gentleman of jazz, and he’s been the emcee for every show. He was with 88.1 FM for 14 years and is great at promoting us,” says Shamblee, who notes that another major media sponsor is the local ABC station, Channel 7. This year’s IWP features Carol Chaikin as the

new musical director, a choice that has served the group well, thanks to Chaikin’s talents with the saxophone and other woodwind instruments. The Instrumental Women Project gives female jazz musicians a chance to be heard. BY CARL KOZLOWSKI

The experience has been fulfilling, as she sees the ensemble educating young women about the role of women in jazz, which in turn motivates them to play music and learn as much and as early as possible. Indeed, Chaikin has her own rich history in the musical trenches, having immersed herself in New York City’s jazz scene for 17 years after completing studies at the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston. She was a regular member of Astrud Gilberto’s band and traveled the world with that prestigious ensemble, but opted to return to the Los Angeles area to spend more time with her family and reconnect with her roots. “I’ve been involved with them for six years, almost from the beginning. ... that perhaps people weren’t aware of women’s history of being strong instrumentalists. I’m very aware that there’ve been many amazing instrumentalists, but the general public hasn’t been aware.” Meanwhile, Shamblee maintains her usual role of picking the Ford show theme and supervising the budget, production and promotion of the organization. That can be a heavy-duty undertaking, as evidenced by the ensemble’s 2005 “Jazz on a String” production, in which an 18-piece string orchestra, five-piece rhythm section and special guests all teamed up for a night of musical magic. The Los Angeles Times took note of that show, which led to an invitation to perform at the world-renowned Playboy Jazz Festival in 2006. That gig provided the IWP its greatest opportunity yet to fulfill its mission of providing exposure and visibility to its members, who spend most of their careers as side players in jazz bands. “This project by design is multiethnic and 20 ~ MAY 2007 ~ ARROYO

multigenerational, so what we do most years is feature youth artists in the show, so they have an opportunity for a professional gig and they understand there are opportunities to do what they love to do,” says Shamblee. “When we had the ‘Jazz on a String’ concert in 2005, we had the Pasadena Young Musicians Orchestra recruit eight girls and our music director rehearsed with them [for] four sessions, and they were paid for the gig. Different supporters donated $100 each for the girls, and then the IWP paid for harpist Lori Andrew — whose band was hired to perform at Oprah Winfrey’s 50th birthday party — to be the featured guest the following May for [the PYMO].” It’s that concern for younger generations that has motivated Shamblee’s greatest charitable efforts, as she gears the IWP’s fund-raising work toward groups like a Los Angeles social-service agency that offers AIDS and HIV services for women and children. Other causes that the IWP has supported include after-school programs and groups working to end violence against women. Yet financial constraints can hinder the IWP’s ability to perform for as many groups as it would like, so Shamblee scaled back the number of

events this year in order to map out a better strategic plan. She is hoping to delve into “causerelated marketing,” in which corporations and charitable organizations both benefit in addition to the artists who draw donors into fund-raisers. “A great example of cause-related marketing is the TV show ‘Extreme Home Makeover,’ where you have a nonprofit cause connected to a corporate marketing strategy and the nonprofit gets the funds it needs, while corporations donate money and get valuable publicity,” explains Shamblee. “Part of the corporate donation covers the costs of the artists performing for the cause, so everyone wins — especially women artists in a group like ours.” AM To learn more about the IWP and how to help in its efforts at cause-related marketing, write LaQuetta Shamblee at independentwoman@yahoo.com, or visit www.instrumentalwomen.com. To spank or not to spank Science versus common sense about punishment BY HANK SCHLINGER, Ph.D. BY NOW MOST EVERYONE IS AWARE THAT Assemblywoman Sally Lieber (D-Mountain View) introduced and then withdrew a bill in the California State Legislature that would have criminalized the spanking of children by parents. Needless to say, even the mention of the state outlawing such behavior drew heated responses — not only from parents but also from the Los Angeles Times, which, although agreeing that nonabusive spanking is “an outmoded method of discipline,” wrote that passing a law prohibiting it “is none of the state’s business.” Perhaps more telling were some of the emails from parents Lieber received. A particularly chilling one read: “The day that the [government] gives birth to my children, then they have a right to raise them. ’Til then they are mine to do with as I please. I will raise them the way I see fit. If I think that those little butts need a swat …, I will be the one to give it to them.” The sentiment of this parent, unfortunately, probably reflects that of most parents, which is kind of like the answer some people have when told that they should eat healthier or exercise more: “It’s my body, and I’ll do with it as I please.” Whether or not parents should spank children is a moral question, not a scientific one; scientists are no more qualified to answer it than anyone else. What behavioral scientists can do is inform parents about what punishment is and what its unintended consequences might be so they can make more educated decisions. The commonsense view is that punishment involves inflicting a penalty or sanction on a person for an offense. When used with children, punishment is intended to teach right from wrong. Scientifically, however, punishment is simply an immediate consequence of behavior that decreases the likelihood that it will recur. Suppose every time a child hits a sibling, the parent spanks the child. Most people would say that the parent has punished the child. But what if the child doesn’t stop hitting her sibling? Or what if the child hits the sibling even more? Would we still say that the parent has punished the child? Obviously the spanking has not stopped the behavior of hitting. Ironically, in many examples like this, the spanking may actually reward the 22 ~ MAY 2007 ~ ARROYO

child’s hitting. “But,” you say, “a spanking is not a reward; it’s punishment.” And there’s the rub. Spanking is punishment only if it decreases the behavior the next time there is an opportunity for it to occur. You can see how spanking might become rewarding. Suppose a child gets very little attention for positive behaviors, but when she hits her sibling the parents immediately spank her. In these instances, it’s not uncommon for a child to learn to engage in the undesirable behavior as a way to get the parents’ attention. She doesn’t do this consciously. In fact, the parents may have unknowingly taught their child to hit her sibling by giving her attention when she does. If her behavior continues, by definition the parents are not punishing her. And that brings up another clarification: We do not punish children; we punish behavior. If our goal is to decrease a behavior, and we apply some consequence of that behavior to achieve our goal, we have punished the behavior, not the child. Punishing the child connotes retribution or revenge — neither of which is a part of punishment. Before you decide whether to spank your chil-

dren, consider that decades of research have shown that physical punishment such as spanking is more effective when it is immediate, severe and consistent. In thinking about it, then, you ought to ask yourself whether your child does anything serious enough to warrant such action on your part, not to mention whether it is possible for you to catch the behavior every time it occurs. The frequent use of physical punishment has other possible side effects such as making the child want to escape or avoid you, or even making her fear you. Is this really how you want your children to feel about you? And parents who frequently spank are modeling hitting as an acceptable way to deal with behavior they don’t like. The decision to use spanking should be tempered even more by the fact that there are scientifically documented alternatives that avoid most of the moral and practical pitfalls associated with it. Given this information, parents ought to consider whether ’tis nobler to spank or not to spank. what’shotnow! Happy Mother's Day to all the HOT MOMS! Celebrating Moms this month — that's what's hot! Mother's Day is the perfect excuse to stop in our favorite places and pick up the perfect gift from some of the hottest boutiques or grab a box of the world famous cupcakes. Join me in celebrating all the Moms this month. — Charlie Diana Corrado — As a little girl, I used to cut my Barbie's hair and eventually progressed into cutting my sister’s hair. I loved playing with hair; I knew this was going to be my passion. At 19 years old, I went to beauty school and I loved it. After graduating, I worked at a salon in Pasadena as an assistant and I was formally trained on my color and haircutting techniques. I later moved to Eclipse Salon where I have had the opportunity to continue my education in color — haircutting and have the freedom to personalize looks for all my clients and that is the best part of my job. I look forward in personalizing your new look.

What better place to get a perfect Mother’s Day gift than her favorite storeSimply Fresh! There is something for every kind of mom like super lux body products from Kai or Lolia for bathing beauty mom, Simply Chic aprons & ruffled rubber gloves for best chef mom, gorgeous jeweled frames and compacts for elegant mom, hot jewelry for a fashionista mom, cute PJs and 3Dot tees for comfy cozy mom. Make your well deserved mom happy with the fabulous gifts from Simply Fresh.

Simply Fresh, 2628 Mission St., San Marino (626) 441-7250

There is a reason why PW readers voted this bakery No. 1 in Pasadena. I personally know people who drive from the San Fernando Valley to grab a couple of her world famous cupcakes and beautiful custom cakes for every occasion! All of a sudden every occasion became perfect for cupcakes — office birthdays, hostess gifts, weddings, showers. We crave them in our sleep! Denise Weber and her entire family can be seen making the treats in this open, super-tidy kitchen. Denise describes the cupcakes as “a little bite of heaven.” Choose from 40 different types of customized cakes and fillings.

Find beautiful gifts and help children at The Green House. BY JACQUELINE FOX THEY SAY MONEY CAN’T BUY HAPPINESS. Tell that to the thousands of children who benefit every time one of the volunteer employees who run The Green House in Pasadena slip another dollar inside their cash register. The Green House is a cozy, one-of-a-kind gift boutique located in the Arcade off Colorado Boulevard. Every penny of the store’s profits goes to the Green House Children’s Fund, which, since its creation in 1970, has donated roughly $1 million to Childrens Hospital Los Angeles, specifically the facility’s Endowment for Surgical Research for children in need of new and often life-saving surgical services. “The primary goal here is to run a viable business that can raise money for the children who are treated at Childrens Hospital Los Angeles and to carry the vision of the store’s original founders,” said Karen Reynolds. She is the fund’s past president and one of roughly 25 volunteers who either manage the store, shop for its wares or take care of the fund-raising side of the business. The original shop, also on Green Street, was located inside a turn-ofthe-century clapboard house. The store was launched by local resident Marge Cannell, who passed away in 2005 at 95, leaving a last gift to The Green House in her will. Cannell began with a plan to have friends and family members create handcrafted items, including basketry and knitted gifts, to raise money for the hospital. Cannell’s vision has been sustained by a team of dedicated volunteers ever since, and the little shop has evolved into a full-fledged retail operation, offering a vast selection of new, specialty and one-of-a-kind gift and decorative items ranging from a $4.50 beaded lipstick case to a $450 original painting. There are high-quality silver vases, tea trays, brass and gilded mirrors, Tiffany-inspired lamps, glass ware, jewelry, candles, ceramic pieces, handmade purses and pillows, knitted throws, windchimes, unusual greeting cards and even crisp, white hankies — perfect for a bride-to-be. All items sold in the store are new, and hand-selected by The Green House buyers. In addition to regular store hours, the shop hosts holiday open houses throughout the year and is becoming well-known for its annual Christmas gala, where the entire shop becomes a festive collection of decorations and gifts guaranteed to get everyone through their shopping list in a hurry. AM The Green House is located in the Arcade between Colorado Boulevard and Green Street at 696 E. Colorado Blvd., Pasadena. Hours are 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and 6:30 to 9 p.m. Friday. Call (626) 793-7730. JACQUELINE FOX is a native Angeleno and freelance journalist who lives in Highland Park. COMMUNITY

Home away from home The Women’s City Club of Pasadena provides a center for networking, celebrating and socializing in the historic Blinn House. BY JENINE BAINES DOROTHY WAS PROBABLY RIGHT: “THERE’S no place like home.” However, there is a place in Pasadena that, for increasing numbers of women, comes awfully close: the Women’s City Club. For starters, the WCC is housed in a home, the former residence of lumber magnate Edmund Blinn. Built in 1905 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Blinn House captivates visitors with its Prairie School–style lighting fixtures, leaded glass windows and glass tile fireplace. Yet it’s what takes place within the walls of the Blinn House — now owned by the WCC — that makes the place “a hub of immense value to women,” says General Manager Francine Kolcz. “We’ve made a point of adapting to the 21st century,” Kolcz explains. “Members can grow both personally and professionally.” To embark on this journey, there are two points of departure: a social membership or a business membership. Nonprofit (and, yes, coed) organizations can purchase memberships as well. The Zonta Club of Pasadena, Women’s Civic League, Professionals in Real Estate and The Pasadena Symphony Association are among 16 clubs accepting this offer. With these memberships comes an array of perks. In addition to being a place to hold a meeting, to network unobtrusively or to host a business lunch or gala event, the WCC boasts a strong philanthropic tradition. A scholarship fund was established in 2006, and members often spearhead club efforts to support local charities like Friends In Deed: The Crisis Center for Life-Threatening Illness. “As a busy professional, I appreciate the opportunities to give back to the community,” says Carol Fishburn, who serves on the board of directors and as membership chair. “But the pleasant surprise was the social interaction and activities the club offers.” Programs have ranged from a screening of the best-selling self-help video “The Secret” — members even created “visualization boards” afterwards — to a seminar on the benefits of belly laughter. Massages, facials and manicures are offered weekly, 50 ~ MAY 2007 ~ ARROYO

The Blinn House as well as alteration and car-detailing services. During the holidays, members can order pies, cakes and popovers. A word on the popovers: They’re to die for — as anyone who’s fallen off the Atkins wagon and devoured one will attest. That they’re enormous, too, only adds to their mystique. For Sherry Grossi, a board of directors member who acts as program chair, however, the club’s real mystique lies in its ambiance. “It’s a warm, friendly place to meet with friends on the way home from work,” Grossi says. Fellow member Marilyn Ziemann, a CPA, appreciates “the cultural interface” the WCC offers through the artwork on display in the house. Provided by the California Art Club, exhibits rotate semi-annually. “There’s a lot going on,” Kolcz adds. “And it’s all member-driven.” The diversity in offerings is rivaled only by the diversity in membership. “Now the daughters of our members are joining,” says a very pleased WCC President Laura Malis. In fact, women 30 to 45 years old are the club’s fastest-growing segment. These self-proclaimed “Women on the Rise” have initiated pro-

grams ranging from professional development seminars to “Thirsty Thursdays,” meetings for cocktails after work at the club. At the other end of the spectrum are the “Productive Women of Leisure.” But the key word here is “productive.” “They’ve been active all their lives,” says Kolcz. “And now they share all that enthusiasm and involvement with the club.” This potent mixture of energy, commitment, respect for the past and faith in the future — topped with lots of plain old-fashioned fun — is what keeps Yvette-Janine Pardo, vice president of the board of directors, coming back. “I love being part of a legacy of women contributing to the community since 1945,” she says. “I only see this club getting bigger and better as time goes by.” AM The Women’s City Club is located at 160 N. Oakland Ave., Pasadena. For information on membership — perhaps in time to attend a Mother’s Day brunch or the next “Thirsty Thursday” — call (626) 796-0560, or email wccpas@sbcglobal.net. PERSONALITY

Recipe for empowerment: Lena+lunch Community activist Lena L. Kennedy and her fellow members of Community Women of San Gabriel Valley are a force to reckon with — and celebrate!

w 52 ~ MAY 2007 ~ ARROYO

BY JENINE BAINES ~ PHOTOS BY KENDALL ROCLORD HEN LIFELONG PASADENA RESIDENT LENA L. KENNEDY and her fellow members of Community Women of San Gabriel Valley suit up for battle, their weapons of choice are a willingness to listen, a passion to learn and a commitment to become a force for good. “As we educate ourselves, we share with others,” explains Kennedy, a political and nonprofit management consultant who served as district director for former Assemblywoman Carol Liu. “Our mission is to value women for the individual contributions they can make to the health, wealth and success of our community. No matter what your status is in life, you’re a woman and you can make a difference.” Community Women is a relative newcomer on the philanthropic block by Pasadena standards, where centennial celebrations for organizations seem to take place daily. It was founded a little more than 10 years ago, when Kennedy invited a small group of women to meet for lunch to discuss various issues in the community. One topic mentioned repeatedly was the upcoming presidential election: How could an individual citizen become involved? “I thought, ‘Wow, I don’t know,’ ” Kennedy remembers. “So I called the different parties and had a luncheon for about 40 women, where representatives from each party explained how we could make a difference.” Since then, the group has met four to five times yearly for educational workshops and training. Topics range from real

estate and financial management to literature and the arts (Kennedy recently joined the Pasadena Arts Council’s Board of Trustees) to health and beauty. In addition, Community Women hosts an annual luncheon featuring the first lady of California as guest speaker. The tradition began when Sharon Davis visited Community Women and wound up returning the following year. Plans are now in the works for Maria Shriver to visit. “We send out invitations to a mailing list of 1,500,” says Kennedy. “We make sure we hit every segment of the community and urge them to attend. We don’t charge any fees either.” Offering the event at no cost underscores the message that Community Women is continually trying to convey: Our government and its leaders are accessible to all of us, regardless of race, sex or economic status. Costs for other luncheons and seminars are kept as reasonable as possible, Kennedy adds, and no one is turned away if they can’t afford the price; a Community Women member will simply pick up the tab. Community Women’s generosity does not stop there. In June, the group will hold its annual Grant Awards Luncheon, presenting five to seven grants to causes including Elizabeth House and Women of Valor. But what will especially awe anyone who has spent countless hours producing a fund-raiser or a significant chunk of change attending one is this: Grant monies come entirely from the group’s $200 membership dues. “When we founded Community —Continued on page 54

Women, we didn’t want something that would be cumbersome and impose on our lives,” Kennedy explains. “We were already involved in a whole host of volunteer organizations that took a good deal of our energy and time.” Therefore, the grant process couldn’t be easier. Members are asked to submit a one-line request in a letter: I’d like to give a grant to ________. Thus far, philanthropic karma has favored nominees, as requests have yet to outpace funding. There are other opportunities for giving too. Members often informally approach one another to contribute to their pet causes. For instance, someone may send out an email requesting dresses, jewelry and shoes for foster children attending a prom. “If you want to contribute, you can,” says Kennedy. “There’s no pressure.” The purpose, as always, is to keep things simple. In fact, for this reason Community Women is not organized officially as a nonprofit. There are no board meetings, no titles, no entrenched bureaucracy, no agendas — “no complications,” as Kennedy puts it — just women “pulling together to make a difference.” Nevertheless, the group is investigating taking its grant program to what Kennedy calls “another level.” Ideally, 100 women will agree to contribute $2,000 annually to establish a larger philanthropic fund, which the Pasadena Community Foundation would oversee. The goal is to award six $25,000 grants or three $50,000 grants yearly beginning in 2008. Kennedy herself may take a lesson from Community Women and increase her level of political involvement: She is considering running for the State Assembly, District 44 (Pasadena Altadena - Arcadia), where Liu served. “I always said that I would never run for office,” says Kennedy somewhat bemusedly. “But I really believe that, instead of putting your energy into complaining, you should put that energy into making a difference.” Not surprisingly, making a difference would include implementing a solution based on what she’s learned as founder of Community Women. “My goal is to educate all 400,000 citizens in the district,” she confesses. “We spend a lot of time with new legislation and not enough on educating the community about how our democracy is created and how each member can be part of the process. When other people make the decisions for you and then come on at the tail end and say, ‘We want you to be a part of this change,’ you 54 ~ MAY 2007 ~ ARROYO

don’t get the same result.” Kennedy has put her belief in empowering others to the test time and time again and has yet to see it fail. Born and raised in Pasadena, she started volunteering as a teen, working with children in day care and youth centers, and has committed her time over the years to numerous groups from the NAACP to the Rose Bowl Aquatics Center Scholarship Committee. Kennedy recounts how the American Cancer Society and City of Hope once contacted Carol Liu for help enticing women of color to attend a seminar on cancer awareness. Past efforts had attracted fewer than 50 women. Kennedy promised 200. More than 700 signed up for the event. “If you want to create a program where you make a difference in the lives of African-American and Latina women, include them in the process,” Kennedy insists. “I invited them to a meeting and said, ‘This is what we’re planning. And in order for us to produce the event, we need you to be part of the process and help us make decisions.’” This magic pill will also cure tougher societal ills, such as violence and drugs, Kennedy maintains. “If you say to the people who are imposing crime on the rest of us, ‘Come talk to me. You carry a gun. Do you think that’s the way to make our society better for you? Do you want your 5-year-old carrying a gun?’ then you’re on the right path.” Kennedy cites another example: When Liu’s office looked into a study claiming that AfricanAmerican parents don’t support their children’s

schools, Kennedy left the office, drove to several schools and stood outside each one to talk to parents. “I asked every single person who walked by, ‘Do you care about your child’s education?’” recalls Kennedy, a single mother of a daughter, 32, and a son, 14. “And they all said yes. So then I said, ‘If you really care, you need to come to this meeting. Your voice counts, but it can’t count if you’re not there.’” It’s such a simple concept, but Kennedy says she always marvels that people don’t get it. Of course, she willingly concedes that it does take time, money and dedication. “I really believe in people,” she says. “I know it can be done. “We all play a role. No matter how small a role, it’s a role, and that makes a difference,” she adds. “If everyone could understand that, if everyone felt like their voice [and] their time counted and was important, they would feel empowered and give more. Oh, what a world that would be.” AM Upcoming Community Women of San Gabriel Valley events include a grant awards luncheon in June, a lecture with artists in September, a healthy living and beauty workshop in November and Christmas tea in December. Steeped in style Jessica Pina updates the tearoom menu in Pasadena. BY STEVE COULTER ~ PHOTO BY MICHAEL GERMANA THE IDEA OF A FIVE-COURSE tea ceremony may seem a little extravagant in the Starbucks age, but that is by design. Stepping off Green Street in Pasadena and into the subdued elegance of the Scarlet Tea Room, guests are greeted with a calming aura that washes over the stately dining room. And although coffee and tea are inextricably linked in the modern American psyche, nowhere can the unique attributes of tea culture be better understood than here among the faithful. Best known for lighter meals of the scone-and-clotted-cream variety, many modern tearooms also offer slightly heavier fare that touches down somewhere between spa food and California cuisine. Women have changed the world of wine.

Justt forr test g a New driving orr Pre-Owned Lexus...

BY DAVID MCDONALD THE WORLD OF WINE IS constantly changing and reflecting the society that surrounds it — becoming more fun, approachable and inclusive as a result. Who can we thank for this little revolution? My guess would be those who purchase and enjoy the majority of wine in this country: women. Women have changed the world of wine in nearly every aspect. As consumers, they altered our perception of wine from a mysterious specialoccasion-only beverage to a staple of American society. Wine consumption continues to increase in the United States as people feel less intimidated and begin to appreciate its place in culture. Pioneering winemakers like Zelma Long, Mia Klein and Delia Viader have opened doors for a long list of successful female winemakers. In fact, women have produced many of the finest and most coveted wines in California. Screaming Eagle, Sea Smoke, Marcassin and Araujo grace the cellars of the nation's greatest restaurants and wine collectors. Thankfully, there are wines for every budget being made by talented women who strive for impeccable quality. No other product translates a sense of the people and place that produce it as clearly and jovially as a bottle of wine. Here's a list of a few wines from women who do an exceptional job of sharing their particular take on the world's greatest beverage: At Palmina winery in Santa Barbara County, Chrystal Clifton makes a lovely dry Rosé called Botasea. The name means "little barrel" in the local Venetian dialect spoken where she lived in Italy as a student. She now produces a small amount of this delicate, refreshing pink wine every vintage and donates a portion of the proceeds to benefit breast cancer research. This blend of Barbera, Nebbiolo and Dolcetto is incredibly versatile and is perfect for al fresco dining. ~ $18 Kris Curran, winemaker at Santa Barbara's Sea Smoke, makes a varietal Grenache Blanc which is quickly gaining popularity due to an abundance of flavor and its beautiful balance of richness and complexity. The 2006 is this year's new release and is highly recommended for Chardonnay lovers looking for something novel and enticing. ~ $24 Spottswoode, known for its dramatic Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, has been a female-run estate since its inception in 1982. They've just released their 2004 Lyndenhurst Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. Produced from the estate's young vines, it displays much of the velvety richness and character of the flagship Cabernet that sells for twice the price. ~ $60 AM David McDonald can be reached at dave@missionwines.com. The dinner menu has been a total adventure because right now we only do it on Saturdays, so we are still learning. We have never done a dinner menu before, so the real challenge has been to perfect it and make it our own. Basking in the glow Landscapers Cassy and Kirk Aoyagi create a lovely sanctuary with ‘A Place in the Sun’ at the Boddy House in Descanso Gardens.

ESCANSO GARDENS HAS LONG been a favorite spot in Southern California for couples to say “I do.” With that in mind, when Cassy and Kirk Aoyagi of C & K Landscape Design, Inc., were selected to make over the once plain back lawn of the Boddy House for this year’s Pasadena Showcase House of Design, they envisioned a garden meeting three criteria: It would be wedding-friendly with a distinctively modern feel, could act as an open-air art gallery and would be sustainable — something any owner and environmentalist would appreciate. The name of their whimsical masterpiece is “A Place in the Sun,” and it is in every way a work of love that could charm any bride. The Boddy House was built in 1938 for Los Angeles Daily News publisher E. Manchester Boddy, and in recent years has been used as an art gallery. With the arrival of the Showcase House, this building will be transformed back into an actual living space, and the garage area on the grounds will become the art gallery. The Aoyagis, who celebrate a decade in business this year, took the art concept and expanded on it, literally. “We thought we could create an exterior gallery where people from Descanso could pick sculptures and show them off monthly,” says Kirk, pointing to the eclectic pieces placed throughout the garden. All the artwork is from local artists, ranging from a large Calderesque sculpture and vertical pieces made of found objects by Robert Moore to an elegant female silhouette by James Hill. These unique sculptures, which will only be on display for the Showcase House through May 20, give the garden a very hip touch, far from the traditional decorative hedges or animal sculptures one often sees at such estates. Each work has a designated circle — specialized plantings for optimal viewing — in “A Place in the Sun,” which is laid out much like a botanical garden for visitors to navigate and explore each facet. And there’s certainly much to take in: contrasting foliage and almost 40 different plant varieties, ranging from weeping junipers and snow-and-summer to the crowd-stopping Harry Lauder’s Walking Stick

and living succulent trees. “I think bringing in unique plant materials to present during the show will make people stop and really enjoy the space a bit more than rushing right through,” says Cassy. Of course, the customary bridal walk was factored into the garden’s layout. “We were envisioning a real wedding taking place,” notes Cassy. It is after all, one of the most dramatic and unforgettable moments in any wedding ceremony. They designed an arbor at the edge of the lawn area for such occasions. The bride would exit from the back door of the home and wind around the flagstone pathway, down the center of the lawn to the arbor. While it may be just a short trip — the lawn can only hold about 120 guests — wedding guests would be charmed by the intimacy and beautiful simplicity of the surroundings, most notably the all-white flower theme that the Aoyagis have incorporated. “I’ve never done a garden before where I used just one flower color,” says Cassy, who claims she’s “not romantic.” But it’s hard to believe her, considering exquisite choices she’s made such as the sophisticated white-flower scheme and placing African jasmine for fragrance around the arbor area. This is C & K Landscape Design’s third year at Pasadena Showcase, but this one is especially exciting for the company because the Aoyagis’ cre-

ation has, for a change, a long lifespan. “In previous years with Showcase, everything gets taken out if the owner doesn’t purchase it,” says Kirk. “It’s usually a teardown as soon as you’re done,” adds Cassy. Fortunately, Descanso will keep the Aoyagis’ garden of serenity intact and purchase all the plants used, so that “A Place in the Sun” can continue to enchant visitors — and hopefully blushing brides — for years to come. AM Bask in “A Place in the Sun” at the Boddy House as part of the 2007 Pasadena Showcase House of Design through May 20 at Descanso Gardens, 1418 Descanso Drive, La Cañada Flintridge. Her nonfiction book, “Women Warriors,” was published by Seal Press in 2004.

JUST WHAT IS A HOMEBUYER to do? Sit on the sidelines and wait for home prices to come tumbling down dramatically? Or forge ahead to ride the historical escalator of rising property values in our area? Doom and gloom stories in the media have given the impression that prices are falling precipitously and the housing market is about to collapse. The latest stories have sensationalized a sub-prime loan fiasco that has affected some unfortunate buyers who stretched their credit to the hilt in recent years to secure a loan during the rush to buy homes. These stories predict a huge upsurge in foreclosures followed by a glut of low-priced homes flooding the market. But according to John Hickey, president of the Pasadena Foothills Association of Realtors, the downturn in home sales in Pasadena amounts to only three fewer home sales this year per month than last year, with prices down just half of 1 percent. Crash, bang, boom? What about the avalanche of foreclosures that is sure to come? Analyzing stories reporting a major increase in the number of foreclosures this year versus last year, it is important to understand that the percentage increase over last year is based upon a rise from virtually the lowest level of foreclosures in state history. According to DataQuick Information Systems, a La Jolla–based real estate industry research and analysis firm, there are 7,870,000 homes and condos in the state of California. Their recent analysis concludes that statewide, “trustee deeds, or actual foreclosure sales, recorded on homes totaled 6,078 during the fourth quarter, up 76.9 percent from 3,435 for the previous quarter, and up 595.4 percent from 874 for last year’s fourth quarter. Foreclosure sales peaked at 15,418 in third quarter 1996, and hit a low of 637 in the second quarter of 2005.” The current figure represents less than one-tenth of 1 percent of all homes and condos at this time. And just where is this glut of homes in foreclosure? According to DataQuick, the likelihood of foreclosures is highest in Merced, Riverside and Tulare counties — that’s a long way from here. According to the California Association of Realtors, home prices in Los Angeles County have risen an average of 10 percent per year since the recording of statistics began in 1970. And as any local real estate agent can tell you, while the inventory of homes has increased somewhat in recent months, there is still very strong demand with many ready and willing buyers for quality homes that are priced correctly.
