A NOTE FROM THE VICE CHANCELLOR
Assalamualaikum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuh and Salam Sejahtera. Alhamdulillah, I would like to express my deepest gratitude to all team members of ROYALZINE and those who are involved in providing this tremendous opportunity to participate in the publication of the 12Yearbook of Raja Dr. Nazrin Shah Residential College.
I urge all students to be more active and ready to take advantage of opportunities in the learning experience either within or outside of the class. Efforts such as this publication are one such example of learning outside the class, where the love for one’s roots can help. Students will be directly promoted with first class thinking and worldview in line with the vision and mission of the University of Malaya. Best wishes.
The 21st century has shown us that students can gain much from each other if they manage to collaborate and improve networking and relevant skills in academic and cocurriculum to help address the challenges in the future. I believe the students realize that knowledge is power and hence will attempt to make the best of the ample opportunities provided at the varsity level. Every student leader must realize that the legitimacy of their leadership lies in knowledge. As in today’s world, knowledge is power and is the basis of strong leadership.

Professor Dato’ Dr. Mohd Amin Jalaludin Vice Chancellor University of Malaya
A NOTE FROM THE DEPUTY VICE CHANCELLOR
Assalamualaikum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuh and greetings to all, First and foremost, I would like to thank you for giving me the opportunity to express a few words for this third edition of ROYALZINE (session 2014/2015). My heartiest congratulations go out to the entire team of ROYALZINE whose effort and involvement made it possible for the successful publication of the 12Yearbook. I am sure this edition of ROYALZINE will be remembered fondly in the memories of the students and staff of the Raja Dr. Nazrin Shah Residential College.
Hence, I wish all students can work hand in hand to become future leaders and continue to improve the social, political and economic climates of our beloved country. It is my belief that students need to gain as much experience and skills as required for the future through activities organized by either the college or university. Thank you. Professor Datuk Dr. Rohana Yusof Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Student Affairs & Alumni) University of Malaya
In the era of globalization, the role of students is very important in order for us to achieve the goal of making our country one of the developed countries in the world. I believe that to realize this vision, stakeholders such as lecturers and parents should always cooperate and work together in guiding the students. As an extension, fellow-advisors and seniors in a residential college can guide and lead students to contribute to meaningful efforts such as this publication, which is an excellent learning experience outside of the classroom.

A NOTE FROM THE COLLEGE PRINCIPAL
Assalamualaikum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuh and greetings to all, Alhamdulillah, the effort and contribution of students have made it possible for the completion of yet another edition of the ROYALZINE. Thank you for giving me the honor to pen (or keyboard) down a few words in this 12Yearbook of Raja Dr. Nazrin Shah Residential College or better known as ROYALZINE. I had only join this college for less than a month, when I was blessed with the thrills of victory as our fresh residents won the overall champion for BOTH Sports and Cultural event. Indeed this privilege has never been felt by any other college before this, and I immediately became the envy of my counterparts. Later in the semester, the Royals again made me proud by winning the overall champion in SUKMUM 2014/2015, breaking the 22year winning streak by our neighbour, Dayasari. And awesome achievement indeed!! Unfortunately, despite much effort, we didn’t excel in FESENI this year. But having said that, and overall 3rd placing is still a force to be reckoned with. Kudos to all!! I am also proud and happy that, as I continue my learning process in this college, I was pleasantly introduced to the various projects and activities, including the appreciation of cultures, community services and engagement, promoting
12
ecofriendly attitudes and awareness, just to name a few. There are definitely many more projects that runs in various themes, and to the residents who have made these projects successful, I offer my hand of applause! All of you deserve to be proud of your achievements. The main objective of publishing this yearbook is to enable college residents to cherish their fond memories and treasure all the events and achievements of 12th college for the past two semesters. In addition, the ROYALZINE should also be beneficial to the new students, for inspiration and aspiration, to emulate and continue the college’s successes and excellence in the future. Last but definitely not least, I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate all team members of the yearbook who are involved directly or indirectly in the publishing of this 3rd edition of ROYALZINE. May this tradition be continued for many more years to come. “ATTITUDE DETERMINES ALTITUDE” Thank you. Profesor Dr. Zulqarnain Mohamed Principal Raja Dr. Nazrin Shah Residential College University of Malaya
A NOTE FROM THE FELLOW ADVISOR
Assalamualaikum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuh and greetings to all, Alhamdulillah, thank you Allah SWT for the successful and final outcome of this third edition of 12Yearbook. I feel extremely fortunate to share a few words as fellow advisor of the ROYALZINE. My biggest appreciation and congratulations goes to the committee members and for those who were involved directly or indirectly in the production of ROYALZINE. It is my hope that the fruit of your labor will be beneficial to all readers and for your sincere efforts to be blessed by the Almighty. Publications such as this one require many sacrifices, specifically in terms of time and energy. In addition, I believe a high level of commitment is vital to maintain the quality of the ROYALZINE and ensure its effectiveness towards the target audience. In the process, the committee members would have gained many experiences which will help them prepare to face the next challenges in the future.
I reserve much praise for the continuation of this third edition of ROYALZINE as it clearly shows the determination of the committee members to continue the efforts to promote an identity of the 12th Residential College to the public. Indeed, ROYALZINE is hoped to be one of the best mediums for the students to share their nostalgic moments; memories that put a smile on one’s face and realize the meaningful life one has lead. Warm regards. Dr. Rohayati binti Paidi Fellow Advisor of ROYALZINE Raja Dr. Nazrin Shah Residential College University of Malaya

A NOTE FROM THE PRESIDENT OF JTK
Assalamualaikum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuh and greetings to all, Alhamdulillah, I am very thankful to our great Allah Almighty, who blesses us with peace and happiness. Because of Him the ROYALZINE is able to successfully be completed within the expected time. Thanks for giving me the chance to deliver a few words in this 12Yearbook. My deep sense of gratitude and appreciation towards all committee members for their hard work and commitment in publishing this third edition of ROYALZINE. Thank you to everyone who has participated directly or indirectly in supporting the students to ensure this ROYALZINE becomes a reality. I believe ROYALZINE is indeed the best platform for students to develop their creative talent and potential skills in all aspects. All activities and events are captured and documented for the benefit of all and of course as a form of reference for the next generation.
14
Lastly, as we edge closer to the end of the year, I consider it apt to take this opportunity to apologize on behalf of the committee members of JTK 2014/2015 for any shortcomings on our behalf throughout the year. Thank you.
Ahmad Fuaddin Ross bin Mohd Rosli President of Jawatankuasa Tindakan Kolej (JTK) Raja Dr. Nazrin Shah Residential College University of Malaya
A NOTE FROM THE CHIEF EDITOR OF ROYALZINE
Assalamualaikum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuh and greetings to all, Bismillahirrahmanirrahim, Alhamdulillah. Thanks to Allah SWT, who has give me the opportunity to complete our third edition of ROYALZINE for this 2014/2015 session. Indeed, in the course of producing this magazine, I was taught the meaning of perseverance and persistence in preparing something beneficial. A special thanks to our master, Profesor Dr. Zulqarnain Mohamed and our ROYALZINE’s fellow advisor, Dr. Rohayati binti Paidi for their trust in me, to become the chief editor for this edition and also their willingness to provide guidance and support while contributing tremendously to ROYALZINE. GETTING TO KNOW OUR COLLEGE PRINCIPAL
Profesor Dr. Zulqarnain Mohamed Principal Raja Dr. Nazrin Shah Residential College University of Malaya
THE INTERVIEW Can Prof tell us about your background? I was born in Singapore, but later moved to Petaling Jaya, Selangor. I was raised and studied here. My primary school was SK Alam Shah and I was the headboy during that time. My secondary school was Malay College Kuala Kangsar (MCKK). Then I got accepted to UITM but I only studied there for a short while as I got an accepted to Centre for Foundation Study University of Malaya (PASUM). During that time, PASUM was 2-year course. Then, I take my degree also in University of Malaya, Bachelor of Genetic from Faculty of Science. I was very active in college, and had won several awards. During my convocation, I was among the top 6 students in my course. Later, I got a scholarship to pursue my study for master and PhD in Scotland. Why Prof chooses UM, and decided to become the principal of the college? There are many reasons, firstly because I am very
22
familiar with this university. Secondly is because of my scholarship. I got a scholarship from UM, so of course I need to serve the university. Lastly, of course I want to be here, this is the best university in the world. Before coming to kk12, what is the first impression on this residential college? Rich, too diverse, and lavish. What makes prof to come to this college? Any reasons? I cannot choose where I want to stay. Since I got 12th college, I came here for a few missions. First day in this kk12? How is the feeling? How is it different between 8th college and 12th college? Of course I feel anxious because I was too used with 8th college. For example, in 8th college, staffs and fellows are involve in training for new PM. However here, the students do it all by themselves. So when I went to visit them during the training, they become tension because they are not used to it when I am involving directly in their training.
Since prof being in UM for quite a long time, what are the most precious moments in UM and also 12th college? I do not know the specific time as everything happened here was precious to me. However if I can tell one of it, it is the moment when we become the winner for SUKMUM. I was proud because it was the first time we win the SUKMUM. We are able to beat Dayasari (5th college) after 22 years long of their victory. That what makes its really meaningful and of course I was able to smile proudly to principal of 5th college who is also my best friend. I also like the challenges, the diversity and all. How are the environment, student, staff and everyone in 12th college? Is it okay and comfortable? Did Prof experienced any problems or difficulties within this time? It has only been 2 weeks since I moved here and there are so many things happened. I had visited by this big-snake (python) at my house. Luckily no one was hurt. Also about a month ago, there is also another visitor (snake) at my house. The same things happen at my house in 8th college, I was visited by a snake. So, many people said that, the snake is attracted to me. By the way all the staffs here are a very good staff. There are friendly and hardworking. There are just a few issues about the management, as I cannot manage this college the same way as I manage 8th college before. So, there is this little change.
only a people with the permission can access the area. This is because I need to control the area, way of in and out of the car as there is the issue of fire hazard. For example like now, with all the car parked everywhere, if the fire happen, how do the fire truck wants to come in. The situation will become worse if there is any accident happens. I was the one that are responsible for that. Also for the surau, there is some renovation in progress. I had changed the floor from carpet to linoleum materials. I changed the material so that the odour and smell will be reduced. Then, we will get the CUBE later. All the rooms, BMJ and BMP will all become the cube for the students to study, it is more like a study room, and so, the students can do a group discussion or study alone there. Lastly, for this few months ahead, we will have a selfservice laundry at Block B. Hope towards the students of this college and also the administration? I hope there will be some changes in attitudes from staff, students and all the residents of 12th college. I hope they will be more receptive towards the changes. So, they can see why I am doing things. So, hopefully there are people, who can spread the words that everything that I am doing was all for the sake of them. Any last word? Advice to the students.
For students, I got no problem – but I was curious, in this big college, there was no student activity’s room. So, I make one, at the old student’s clinic. But the best thing was the response from the students. They said that they already have that, in front of the café and office (BMJ and BMP) and like working there. I expected a better response. But as you can see, everyone likes to use and working in that room now because it is bigger and can accommodate many people at once. Any changes that prof will be makes and try to achieve during this few years ahead?
One thing that I feel strongly disappoint about as a lecturer is if the students are studying only for the sake of exam. Because of that, they do not get the knowledge. I hope that the students will study for the knowledge. I really wish my students are like that. As a student, this is the best time to get knowledge. Later when you work and then married, you will have limited time to study as you are very busy with others things. *Also, you need to know why you are doing things. Don’t do things just because.
There are so many things that I want to achieve for this few years ahead. Firstly, it is about the parking area around the college. I want to put a bar, so that

Besides, this project will provide a platform for students to buy books whether educational books or casual reading materials. Next, we also wanted to allow students to open up their mind and view through the books they read. We want to inculcate the reading culture of “Drop Everything And Read” for at least half an hour a day. Lastly, through this project, we hope to help increase the student’s self-esteem, gain knowledge and create a new hobby or interest.

MALAM APRESIASI GEMILANG (MAG)
RAJA DR. NAZRIN SHAH RESIDENTIAL COLLEGE 1st May 2014
Royale Chulan Hotel
BENGKEL FOTOGRAFI & PHOTOSHOP Malam Apresasi Gemilang (MAG) is an annual event organized by Raja Dr. Nazrin Shah Residential College and this year 2015, it was held on 1st May at Royale Chulan Hotel. Its ulterior purpose is to appreciate each and every single contribution put in by the residents throughout the entire academic year and also enables the committees to learn how to manage a grand and prestigious event such as MAG. The theme was a ‘Night of Disguise’ where everyone wore a mask. The vibrant colors of the mask stood out against the stark black and white outfits. Approximately about 71 awards were given out that night based on their excellent performance in both academic and co-curriculum activities. There were several performances by the students of UM on that night. The first performance was by Muhammad Aliff Ali, a final year biomedical student, who sang ‘Assalamualaikum’ by Faizal Tahir with his friend. He then had the whole stage on his own when he sang ‘Bang Bang’. There were also an acoustic performance by Khairul, Azmi and Lee Li Chin. The trio presented 2 songs, entitled ‘A Thousand Years’ and ‘Love Story’. The committee was also very honor to have 2 celebrities, Amir Jahari and Syed Shamim to perform on that night. Their presence had definitely made the event merrier. Amir Johari sang ‘Tanpamu’, ‘Aku Juga Manusia’ and ‘Ku Hanya Penghibur Jalanan’ while Syed Shamim sang ‘Mewangi’ and ‘Be Mine’. The performances captured attention of every single audience. It was overall a successful event. The people, the atmosphere and the venue all came together very nicely. Everyone enjoyed the night filled with love, appreciation and gratitude. It was truly the best and the most memorable night ever.

A Friend
The glazing window vibrated along to the melody of the running machinery like an orchestra. I hummed to the tune as well, trying to break the silence of the bygone place where no one would even know exist. Dust hovered down the cracked cement floor like little angels descending to earth. Gears, pistons and springs actuated like they were meant to run forever. Like they were immortal somehow, immune to the ravages of time. Everyone knew that was not true of course. That was why I was here in the first place: to fix the broken. I walked slowly as if I was in a surreal dream going through some kind of imaginary place. The machinery ignored me, going on with their usual routine. A sharp hiss of steam kicked me into reality, forcing me to duck if I wanted to avoid any third-degree burns. I turned off the water compressor at the control panel like some kind of automaton, destined to do the same thing over and over. The hissing sound disappeared gradually, reluctant to leave me back to the cursed silence. Why doesn’t anyone want to talk to me? Was it because of the gaping hole replacing my right eye? Or was it because of my deformed leg, grotesque but still pulling stares from those leering eyes? Perhaps. Perhaps.
I flicked the plastic switch downwards, killing the lights in my cramp and bug-filled basement. They actually tasted pretty good though, the bugs, once you get used to the crunchiness. The rats? Well, I stayed clear from them. They can get pretty nasty once you enter their beloved home, with all those diseases and God-knows-what in their blood, I wouldn’t take my chances. The stairs creaked like some kind of overfilled bear crying from a tummy ache as the ancient wood curved under my weight. I fumbled for the door handle as the darkness enveloped every single corner. I hit my head against the short ceiling and cursed every single word under the moon, rubbing my poor forehead which was destined to balloon like an overripe grapefruit. Finally, I found the handle and unlocked the door. The overbearing silence once again dominated my eardrums like some kind power-hungry dictator. I was getting weary of it. It would be different next time I promise you. Just have to steal a soul....some hydraulics and powerful microchip processors to finish the job. I smiled as someone upstairs started shouting. Another quarrelling session from that young couple, perhaps one day they might even break up and join the “ALL-STARCLUB-FOR-LOSERS”. Harhhh! I was mean, I know and Mother wouldn’t like it one bit. But she was under six feet of dirt with the red-eyed rats eating away her rotting flesh. I bet that pretty-looking dress the undertaker put on her was all gone now, showing the bones and all. May God have pity over her soul.
KARYA 2
I will show them all. Even people like me should have some kind of friend, to fill the void in my cracked soul. I was desperate like a drowning person craving for sweet, sweet air. I will show those stupid eyes. I don’t care about this grey and lifeless factory anymore; it was like a slave to its master. Just like me. But no longer, I tell you. I will show them all *** Have to finish it. Have to finish it. How about the power source? Solar panels? Batteries? Have to ponder about it sometime later. But not now. Had a much bigger problem, yes. A MUCH bigger problem. I needed more parts. Parts that I cannot fabricate my own, too complex for my tiny and laughable tools. I might have to steal some if I have to. Mother always said stealing was bad. Only bad people steal, she told me before. But she was dead for six years.....or was it seven? There was no one to call me a little bad boy now. Not those God-awful Sunday-school teachers or social workers pretending to actually care for me. I will have my best friend, no matter what happens.
142
I grabbed my overcoat and shoved the clinking house keys into my pocket. I turned the handle and stepped out to the world. Everything seemed to scream at me like some kind of revenge-hunting banshee. The barks of stray dogs, the ion thrusters of hovercars, the hum of the weather machine in middle of town and everything else was amplified a thousand times and transmitted directly to my cerebellum. I winced of course; no sane man could pretend everything’s normal with those kinds of devils playing in your brain. I had to hurry. The factory (where I worked) was going to close in an hour. Using my worker credentials, I should be able to sneak in and get the parts I wanted. *** Blue wire to the blue node. Red wire to the red node....or was it the green with yellow stripes? Can’t remember clearly. It was like a juicy red apple just dangling over my head, mocking me like those stupid eyes. No matter. My friend was almost here! We will first go canoeing at the Thames River, then we will visit Big
Ben, and then we will go to a soccer game to see people punching each other over something trivial! What fun we will have! Oh God, my nerves were trembling just from the adrenaline pumping through my veins. Just have to type some lines of code and we will be done. I attached the mini fusion core reactor to the central node which was connected to all power-requiring systems and welded it in place. The gloomy basement was showered with a rare brilliance as the torch did its job. The glow of my computer seemed insignificant to the hot white flame. Just like my old life will be, compared to my new one once my new friend arrives. And....we were done. I pressed the ‘Y’ button on my keyboard and I could hear power surged through the cyborg as the reactor came online. At first it was little movements, the slight twitch of the fingers, a slight shaking of the thigh. But my new friend became alive as his systems warmed up and his core processed the computer codes completely. I smiled like a little child once more since twenty years ago. How much fun I was having!
They were the same as the others! How could this be? Even HIM was staring at me like some kind rabid dog! Laughing, mocking, jeering me? Maybe I have to be like him, sharing the same kind of power source and harnessing electricity like his nodes. Yes, that’s it! YES! I WILL FINALLY HAVE A FRIEND! I took an extra wire and attached it to the pulsing mini reactor with extreme glee. Once secured, I jabbed the other end towards my beating heart. My arms twitched and I felt my bladder unloading like a gaping river dam as the deadly voltage scrambled my brain and body. As I felt my world twirling into emptiness and I fell like an unused doll onto the ground, I saw those red eyes still staring at me. Mocking me. Accusing me. Just like the others. That was the last thing I saw before darkness consumed me.

The Language of Flowers The warm light of the sun bathes a stretch of green meadow. The colours among the green flickered and waved as a breeze pass by. Enter, a young girl with a crown of raven hair. She dashed here and scurried there. Her cheerful dress fluttered in the wind. Her feet lively skipped across the grass. Her chin held high but her eyes looked down. Then the young girl stopped and crouched in front of a field of red, cup-shaped flowers.
dry as she came to a halt in front of a tall stalk. She looked up and thought she saw two suns. Unsure which is the flower, she called, “I’m searching for a gift for my special someone. May I know who you are?” The large radiant paused from its gaze at the sun and bend down to address the girl. “Little one, I am bright and proud, I am the sunflower. I represent warmth and happiness. Gift my flower to the one that you adore most and may that person live a long fulfilling life.”

graciousness is appreciated, Dear one. What brings you here?” “A present I wish to give to the person most dear to me.” The flowers in clusters reached her hand and said, “This Jasmine represents grace and elegance. Present this to your dear one for she should be the one most beautiful.” The young girl shook her head. “This person could not compare to your beauty. But she is lovely and cares for me very much.”
And so the day went by, for the search of the perfect flower for her loved one. She pranced wide and far but none she found suitable. When she left the meadow, there was a small tug at her skirt. She looked down and spotted a bright baby pink flower, the size of her palm. “Take me with you,” said the flower. “Your loved one will understand.” Confused at first she was but something inside trusted those words. The young girl plucked the flower and cradled it in her arms.
KARYA 7
“Come here, come here,” called a voice. The young girl’s eyes strayed to a lush bush beside the tree. Stunning pink blooms dotted the greens, beckoning the girl to come closer. “I heard your request, Kind one. You may take some of mine for your beloved, for I am the hibiscus, a flower that represents gentleness and caring.” The young girl wrinkled her forehead and sighed, “Alas, it is close but not nearly as close as what I am looking for.”
When she reached home, she ran to her loved one and hugged her tight. She held out the soft bloom. “A pink carnation,” said her mother as she took the blossom. “Carnations express love, fascination and distinction. But a pink one says, a mother’s undying love.” And with that she plucked her daughter off the ground, kissed her forehead and hugged her tightly forevermore.
