EDITOR SPEECH
YES EDITOR FOR 2016/2017
The Young Engineers Section (YES) of the Institution of Engineers, Malaysia has been actively cultivating and exposing young engineers into the professional engineering world in the last 40 years ago. For “YES Annual Report 2016/2017”, we proudly unveil several interesting topics for our readers pleasure.
KENNY CHIA Chief Editor
Our idea in creating this edition was to spread awareness of the presence of young force in the nation. Throughout Malaysia, IEM has a total of 8 YES Branches and 16 University Student Sections who are constantly and actively promoting the interest of engineering nationwide. In our continuing quest at generating more value to the readers, we have looked at expanding our ideas to improve young engineers on soft skills particularly communication skills which is highly sought after by the industry. We have approached the existing IEM Toastmaster Club to feature into the magazine, which is to encourage more members able to improve their communication, public speaking and leadership skills.
TIANG KOR LIN Executive Editor
AHMAD RIDHWAN Art Director
We also realized that, to further add more values to the magazine, we need to deal with subject that is close to the hearts of young readers. Our editorial team was lucky enough to be given privilege to invite few young professional engineers from different sectors e.g. Ir. Yau (private consultant firm), Ir. Yeoh (government-link-company) and Ir. Sree (government sector) to be part of the magazine. We are glad to feature their sharing and experiences with the hope to inspire more young readers and peers to embark their engineering profession into a greater height. In developed nations, there should be at least one engineer to a group of 75 to 150. Last year, Malaysia’s population stood at about 31.7 million, so with existing 200,000 engineers, we are close to the 1: 150 ratio. But we should target a ratio of 1: 100 by 2020 to speed up our transformation to a developed nation. Young Engineers can have a huge influence on this present situation. Through YES, young engineers and students can lead various campaigns for changes. By striving on the issues pertaining to young engineers, together we can create a better future. Thank you.
Mr Kenny Chia, Grad IEM, AAE

CHAIRMAN’S ADDRESS
SESSION 2017 / 2018
Dear Graduates and Students, I feel greatly honoured and privileged to be able to able to pen my thoughts for the Young Engineers Section Annual Report Magazine 2017. Having been elected as Chairman for the Session 2017/2018 and taking over from my predecessors who have done a great job previously, I give my word that I shall serve with integrity and passion; working hard with my team to continue helping the professional as well as social development of the engineering fraternity in Malaysia. I have begun my journey in the Young Engineers Section (YES) as a volunteer in 2013 and have never looked back since. I believe YES provides the fresh graduates as well as students a great platform to learn and contribute. Engineers have long been associated with desk duties or mundane lifestyle and YES as well as IEM is the gateway to changing those perspectives. YES is more than just another civil society. It allows us to learn skills beyond our job scopes such as financial management and leadership skills through the various events we get to participate or help to organize. With a strong membership of 40000 and growing, IEM as well as YES gives us a channel to connect with engineers from other disciplines as well as enabling us to progressively and continuously learn about the development in our various fields. Furthermore, with close relationships with other professionals such as the lawyers and architects, the YES journey certainly paves ways for us to expand our horizon; in addition to our ASEAN connections where we make friends with engineers from the Southeast Asia Region and beyond. Last but not least, I personally believe we shall continue to pass on our knowledge to the future generation to ensure the sustainability of the section and the society at large. I believe with the ongoing collaboration between the branches as well as a supportive team of committee that I have, I look forward to more exciting times ahead! Borrowing and rephrasing the quote from the famous Steve Job, let us continue to be “hungry enough to dream, and be foolish enough to chase after that dream”. Thank you.
Mr Tan Zhi Howe, Grad IEM, AAE Chairman Session 2017/2018 Young Engineers Section The Institution of Engineers Malaysia

IMMEDIATE PAST CHAIRMAN’S ADDRESS
SESSION 2017 / 2018
It is indeed a great honor for me to write in this Young Engineers Section’s Annual Report Magazine 2017. As Immediate Past Chairman for IEM G&S-YES for the Session 2017/2018, I would like to express my blessing and support towards the new forming committees. IEM YES always have miles to go. Many more mountains to climb. Many more challenges to overcome. I strongly believe that teamwork can help to overcome great obstacles. For years, IEM Young Engineer Section (YES) serves as a platform for the young engineers to exchange ideas, experience, perspective, achievements and connect with each other on the prospect of the professional development. Towards the years, we have certainly achieved our target to in promoting professional engineering practice to our members. Also, we shall emphasize on the need of passing over the experience and wisdom to the young leaders in YES to ensure the sustainability of the section and society. Especially to survive and strike through the challenges and opportunities from the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) where will have freer flow of skilled engineers in ASEAN. Last but not least, I would like to share a quote from Helen Keller, a deaf-blind author, political activist, and lecturer. “Alone we can do so little, together we can do so much.” - Helen Keller Thank you.
Ir. Kok Jing Shun, P. Eng, MIEM. Immediate Past Chairman Session 2017/2018 Young Engineers Section The Institution of Engineers, Malaysia

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT: TOASTMASTERS INTERNATIONAL
YES ANNUAL REPORT | Page 47
Toastmasters
might ring
a bell for some of us, but many are not aware of the wholesome benefit that Toastmasters can offer. Besides public speaking that Toastmasters was famed for, it also enables members to perform leadership roles, practice

for
character building. Engineers,
young
and
experienced alike, requires not only technical and engineering skills, but also soft skills that are vital for effective communication to perform their tasks at the highest level. Gone are the days where engineers only perform numerical calculations to solve technical problems, with the emergence of globalisation, information gets disseminated just by a click of a mouse, and engineers are expected to reach out to others, constantly improving themselves and serve as a leader to the society. Unfortunately, not many engineers have such avenue for them to hone their soft skills without the fear of repercussions and morale-damaging criticisms. With Toastmasters, however, we are free to practice such skills without fear and prejudice. Moreover, positive feedback and suggestions were provided to enable continuous improvement from others who are from a diverse of backgrounds, inside and outside the engineering fraternity. For these very reasons, IEM has chartered a Toastmasters club since 2006 for the benefit of its members. A decade since its inception, IEM Toastmasters Club has produced many well-rounded engineers, who were also exposed to many other fields apart from engineering, through their interaction with other members within and outside the club. Beyond the club itself, Toastmasters also organized events such as workshops, conferences, public speaking contests at Area, Division and District levels. Such events enable an even wider networking opportunities and exposure. Typically, a Toastmasters meeting consists of three main sections, namely Table Topics, Prepared Speeches and Evaluation Session. Table Topics are essentially short speeches given off the cuff. It trains members to tackle topics given in a creative and systematic manner. Daunting as it seems, speakers could
