CHAIRMAN’S ADDRESS
SESSION 2017 / 2018
Dear Graduates and Students, I feel greatly honoured and privileged to be able to able to pen my thoughts for the Young Engineers Section Annual Report Magazine 2017. Having been elected as Chairman for the Session 2017/2018 and taking over from my predecessors who have done a great job previously, I give my word that I shall serve with integrity and passion; working hard with my team to continue helping the professional as well as social development of the engineering fraternity in Malaysia. I have begun my journey in the Young Engineers Section (YES) as a volunteer in 2013 and have never looked back since. I believe YES provides the fresh graduates as well as students a great platform to learn and contribute. Engineers have long been associated with desk duties or mundane lifestyle and YES as well as IEM is the gateway to changing those perspectives. YES is more than just another civil society. It allows us to learn skills beyond our job scopes such as financial management and leadership skills through the various events we get to participate or help to organize. With a strong membership of 40000 and growing, IEM as well as YES gives us a channel to connect with engineers from other disciplines as well as enabling us to progressively and continuously learn about the development in our various fields. Furthermore, with close relationships with other professionals such as the lawyers and architects, the YES journey certainly paves ways for us to expand our horizon; in addition to our ASEAN connections where we make friends with engineers from the Southeast Asia Region and beyond. Last but not least, I personally believe we shall continue to pass on our knowledge to the future generation to ensure the sustainability of the section and the society at large. I believe with the ongoing collaboration between the branches as well as a supportive team of committee that I have, I look forward to more exciting times ahead! Borrowing and rephrasing the quote from the famous Steve Job, let us continue to be “hungry enough to dream, and be foolish enough to chase after that dream”. Thank you.
Mr Tan Zhi Howe, Grad IEM, AAE Chairman Session 2017/2018 Young Engineers Section The Institution of Engineers Malaysia

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT :TOASTMASTER REPORT
YES ANNUAL REPORT | Page 49
Toastmasters might ring a bell for some of us, but many are not aware of the wholesome benefit that Toastmasters can offer. Besides public speaking that Toastmasters was famed for, it also enables members to perform leadership roles, practice creative problem-solving skills, build interpersonal relationships, and many other critical skills necessary for character building. Engineers, young and experienced alike, requires not only technical and engineering skills, but also soft skills that are vital for effective communication to perform their tasks at the highest level. Gone are the days where engineers only perform numerical calculations to solve technical problems, with the emergence of globalisation, information gets disseminated
Page 50 | YES ANNUAL REPORT
just by a click of a mouse, and engineers are expected to reach out to others, constantly improving themselves and serve as a leader to the society. Unfortunately, not many engineers have such avenue for them to hone their soft skills without the fear of repercussions and morale-damaging criticisms. With Toastmasters, however, we are free to practice such skills without fear and prejudice. Moreover, positive feedback and suggestions were provided to enable continuous improvement from others who are from a diverse of backgrounds, inside and outside the engineering fraternity. For these very reasons, IEM has chartered a Toastmasters club since 2006 for the benefit of its members. A decade since its inception, IEM Toastmasters Club has produced many well-rounded engineers, who were also exposed to many other fields apart from engineering, through their interaction with other members within and outside the club. Beyond the club itself, Toastmasters also organized events such as workshops, conferences, public speaking contests at Area, Division and District levels. Such events enable an even wider networking opportunities and exposure.
Typically, a Toastmasters meeting consists of three main sections, namely Table Topics, Prepared Speeches and Evaluation Session. Table Topics are essentially short speeches given off the cuff. It trains members to tackle topics given in a creative and systematic manner. Daunting as it seems, speakers could gain tremendous confidence and overcome stage fright by participating in Table Topics. Stuttering and stammering might be expected for most first-timers and even seasoned public speakers on their off days, but there are no qualms that by doing it and experiencing it often are the keys to ace Table Topics.
Prepared Speeches might seem to be the conventional way to practice giving speeches for most of us, however, in Toastmasters, speeches are prepared according to the manual provided. Each manual contains ten speeches which are to be carried out within the project goals and objectives, each speech were tailored to enable progressive improvement in terms of voice, body language, content and delivering techniques. Advanced manuals contain projects that are highly customized for certain purposes and events such as roasting, speaking under duress, speaking humorously, PowerPoint

presentations, story-telling and so on. All in all, it prepares members to speak in all kinds of occasions and under a variety of circumstances. Last but not least, the Evaluation session is where members take the stage to evaluate speakers from the aforementioned Table Topics and Prepared Speeches sessions. Evaluations will be given in such a way that the speaker will not be discouraged to perform his or her next speech. Positive feedback and constructive suggestions will provide the speaker to observe his or her performance in others’ shoes. Evaluators will also have a chance to practice speaking tactfully and giving opinions in a respectful and encouraging manner – essential skills to be an effective leader. Besides that, attending members will also have a chance to play other supportive roles such as Grammarian, Time Keeper, Toastmaster of the Day and so on. The roles have specific tasks in order for the meeting to be carried out without a hitch. Each member will play a different role, including being the speaker or the evaluator, in each meeting. This ensures all members have a chance to develop communication and leadership skills in all key aspects. An assortment of fun activities with endless varieties guaranteed that there will never be a dull moment in Toastmasters!

S e n i o r M a n a g e r , D e s i g n I n t e r fa ce M R T Co r p o ra t i o n S d n B h d )
1) How has your life experience made you the leader/position you are today? I’m the eldest son in my family and my father is a no-nonsense person. I’m not born with a silver spoon in mouth and has been constantly reminded that I have to strive for my own excellence to excel in life. With that constant reminder, I’ve always set my own limit higher and push myself beyond my comfort zone. As the eldest son, I also have to show a good example to my younger brother and younger sister, setting the bar and giving them encouragement and advice. I’ve always believed in leadership by example, so I always ensure that I practice what I preach. However, I’m only human and there’s always imperfection in me. I also believe and held dearly to the quote
“
What don’t kill you makes you stronger
Page 54 | YES ANNUAL REPORT
With that principles, I’ve always challenged myself and at times, I do fail. But all these failure serves as a lesson for me to improve on my weakness and shortcoming. We should never stop learning or even think that we are already perfect, life will always teach you a lesson so long as you are open to it. 2) What are the highlights and challenges been during your tenure at MRT Corp and how you overcame it? This year marks my 2nd year in MRT Corporation, and I would say it has been a wonderful journey. Previously I was with main contractor, sub-contractor and with MRT Corporation is my 1st role on the client’s side. It has opened up my view with regards on the role of a client, I used to think that being a client is pretty much easy compared to being a contractor. Boy, I was wrong! It’s a total different playing field and I’m proud to say that being a client has it’s
own challenges and difficulties. Although we are the client, we are directly managing the Underground Works contractor, and as such our role is similar to a project manager for the underground section. One of the key challenges is to handover the station to the respective railway system contractors on time for them to commence work. This in turn will affect the overall completion of the whole MRT system as the underground section connects the completed elevated Phase 1 to the southern elevated section. We can’t have the MRT not serving the heart of the city right? We impose several key dates for the contractor to achieve and we monitor the progress closely, and if the key dates are breached, we come out with a recovery plan together with the contractor to ensure the final date is not affected. We are proud to say that Phase 1 of the MRT project has completed 2 weeks ahead of time and with a saving of RM2 Billion. I guess that’s pretty rare. I’m confident that Phase 2 which includes the Underground & Southern Elevated section will be open on time if not earlier. I’m looking forward to the opening and showcasing what Malaysia is capable of. 3) How do you stay abreast of issues affecting your industry? Railway industry in Malaysia is not a very big industry compared to buildings and others. Nevertheless, we are growing in numbers due to the number of projects that we have in Malaysia. Industry players are pretty much well connected and social medias do play a big role in current environment. Nowaday, I’m quite sure that everyone has a smart
phone. Professional social platform such as LinkedIn is one of the application that keeps me updated on what’s happening around the world in railway industry. Apart from that I would say that one should always expand their own network of friends and acquaintance. Most of the time, the latest news are shared by friends rather than reading it somewhere in newspaper or other media. Also, attending conference, seminar, workshops and talks about the industry will open your horizon and allows you to think out of the box when you exchange ideas and listening to major industry players. 4) What abilities or personal qualities do you believe which will contribute most to success in this field? Honestly speaking, abilities or personal qualities, the good ones will contribute to your success no matter what field you are in. One of the key qualities I would really appreciate is the never ending will to learn, curiosity. As an engineer, the curiosity in us is what makes us stand out. I’m a mechanical engineer, but over the years, I’ve acquired knowledge from other trades such as electrical engineering, railway systems, civil works, structural work and even architecture. Some say curiosity kills the cat, but for engineers we take calculated risk and when it comes to knowledge we should never have closed doors.

Proper planning and execution. I’ve always believed that if you fail plan, then you planned to fail. So even for my daily lives, most activities are scheduled and I know what I’m going to do next. I usually leave the office on time and always on time for all my scheduled activities. So how do I do that in KL where traffic is unpredictable? I ride motorcycle. I become frustrated and stress when I’m not in control, such as being stuck in a traffic jam. I also play volleyball, futsal & football after office hours to stay healthy. 6) What is the best piece of advice you have experienced on your career to young engineers today? If it doesn’t kill you, it makes you stronger. I was once posted to Doha, Qatar for an Airport Testing & Commissioning role. Nobody wanted to go as the pay isn’t that attractive and to be honest, the environment is really challenging. Nevertheless, I was young and ready for challenges, I took the role and never looked back. It was one of the harshest environment one can live in. At about 30°C in Malaysia and we are complaining everyday. In Doha, the average was 38°C and it could soar up to 50°C during summer. Also, the working environment overseas is very different to what we have here in our country. The food is different, the authorities are different, the culture is different, we are also treated differently as we are foreigners and we will miss our home but the experience and the exposure

that I got from the stint I had there is immeasurable. It opens up opportunity to work abroad due to international exposure, living overseas in a harsh environment also builds up your own survival skills. Although it’s a tough and arduous journey, never say no to challenges. To the young engineers, embrace hardship as it will prepare you for the future. You will never know, it could be a blessing in disguise. 7) How do you push through your worst time? Always remember that there’s always tomorrow and that good times as well as bad times will pass. It will never last forever and as I’ve mentioned earlier, whatever that don’t kill you makes you stronger. Face the challenge and do your best in the situation, if you have given your best and the situation doesn’t side you, at least you know you have done what you could and have no regrets. 8) What are your success habits? Never give up and always face challenges face on. Do not cower when faced with something difficult, embrace it and challenge it head on. Even if I fail, I would have learned from the experience facing it rather than turning my back on it. I would say it’s a never say die attitude, or even dare to fail. Life is never a linear line, it’s full of ups and down. With the never gives up mindset, one will always be ready to face whatever challenges come and emerge a better person no matter what the outcome is.
PROFESSIONAL ENGINEER I R YA U C H A U F O N G
Managing Director of Duriane Professionals Sdn Bhd
1) How has your life experience made you the leader/ position you are today? I started to join Graduate and Student Young Section, currently known as Engineers Section (YES) in 2001 and Electrical and Electronic Technical Division (EETD) in 2006. I joined as volunteering basis in the beginning for 6 years until holding a portfolio as a committee and eventually the chairman. It was a slow progress at first however I was under the guidance of helpful seniors in YES. I would always do my best whenever I can. Through leading YES and EETD, I have had the opportunity to lead a small team with my members which they are currently my partner in Duriane. It all started from volunteering to holding a position in YES and EETD that it has shaped the current leader as I am now.
2) What are the highlights and challenges been during your tenure at Duriane? How do you solve them? The biggest challenge would be the startup and the maintenance of the company. As it is a new company, gaining trust in the industry is not easy. We face challenges head on by working heard and putting full commitment in our work. Our first project in Perlis was a success and it has given us a good head start. Besides, to maintain a company needs a strong team where each of the directors shares the responsibility in ensuring good management of the company. It is important to have good delegation of task among the team for balance.

3) How does a person progress in consulting field? What is a typical career path in this field? In consultancy firm as a junior engineer, we receive guidance from seniors and exchange ideas with people in YES and IEM technical division. There is no handbook on how to be an engineer. Therefore by joining talks and courses organized by IEM, we can learn and apply them in our work. One should start from getting into general consultancy and slowly progress into specialist consultancy where more in depth knowledge is needed. When globalization is currently the main driving force, we should equip ourselves with skills to compete with other people. Is it good to be specialist or general? Being specialist is good for our career, but we have to master the knowledge. General consulting is more risky as we are moving into globalization. Our company covers general projects, infrastructure projects, and renewable energy projects and so on. We should master the basics first before we venture into specialist field. 4) What abilities or personal qualities do you believe contribute most to success in this field/ job? I believe one of the main thing that contribute to success is willing to learn and explore. We have to be open to ideas and try new things as we go along. Through learning from talks and courses, we can continuously enhance our skill-sets to be to adapt to changes that might be required in the building industry.

5) What is your opinion on consulting field in the near future and far future? As technology is slowly taking over the industry, we have to equip ourselves with latest skills and willing to adapt to the changes. For example, Autocad has been the main software in design and build in commercial development. Mapping of designs is important in building and construction as it gives us an insight of realtime model analysis. For example, Building Information Modelling (BIM), an intelligent 3D model-based software is able to analyze and visualize design before a project breaks the ground. Globalization would take us far among ASEAN countries, and engineers have to be on continuous education to be able to compete and work along-side with competitive and talented engineers around the world. 6) How do balance?
you
maintain
work/life
To be honest, 24 hours is not enough for me as I have work, IEM, family and friends to juggle with. Therefore I have to prioritize and forego something. I have to tolerate and communicate with my partner and team members to share the burden together. It will not be perfect work life balance and we have to sacrifice and compromise among each social circles.
7) How do you manage workers of Generation X and Generation Y? Generation X people manage Generation X people while Generation Y people manage Generation Y people. As different generations have different mentality, we need someone from the same generation to manage the group. Flexible working hour is one of the benefit I implemented for the young generations in my company as they prefer to have flexible time. 8) What is the best piece of advice you can give to young engineer?
10) How do you see yourself as a success? You have to set yourself a target and achieve it. 11) How do you go through your worst time? You have to maintain four good thing, namely work, family, society and friend. 12) What is your success habit? Patience and persistence. Not everyone is born as a leader, so we have to be willing to learn and persist.
YES is the best platform to learn and practice to be a leader of the future. To me, try to treasure whatever you have in YES. When we are young, we can make as much mistakes as possible. We must not be afraid to make mistakes and learn from them. 9) How Malaysia should retain and attract talents from abroad? Many people prefer to work in Singapore due to higher salary. To retain and attract talents from abroad, we have to be willing to travel and go to other places to work with other people first so that people there will come here to learn.
