THIS CATALOGUE IS PUBLISHED IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE OPENING OF THE EXHIBITION CONTEMPORARY UKRAINIAN ARTISTS AT THE DAYS OF UKRAINE IN THE UK AT THE SAATCHI GALLERY, LONDON
19–25 october 2013 Presented by Firtash Foundation Curator Igor Abramovych
Dear Ladies and Gentlemen Welcome to Days of Ukraine in the United Kingdom. This project has been sponsored and funded by the Firtash Foundation, the charity that has been set up by my husband and me. Ukraine has been a cultural hub in Europe for nearly a thousand years and still plays an essential role in the cultural life of the continent. We want to introduce Ukraine to Europeans — a country with a rich history, cultural heritage and much creative and intellectual potential. The Days of Ukraine in the UK festival has been designed to show that art, literature and fashion design are a vibrant part of life in Ukraine. We are proud to showcase our achievements in the cultural field to a new audience in London. Contemporary art in Ukraine is extremely popular and has produced many ground-breaking and innovative international artists. During Days of Ukraine in the UK, we will present for the first time outstanding contemporary artists as part of a new large-scale exhibition at the Saatchi Gallery. The exhibition — «Ukrainian Contemporary Artists» — features a range of artists from different generations, representing a variety of artistic styles. Their work reflects the important stages in the evolution of Ukrainian contemporary art and embodies the key features that characterise the current cultural situation. We believe that this event will bring us closer together and create a greater understanding between our two nations and cultures. This is only the start of a journey that I hope will continue as our relationship flourishes. Sincerely yours Lada Firtash
Currently, one of the main challenges in the process of irreversible integration of Ukrainian culture within the context of world culture is demonstrating that Contemporary Ukrainian Art is a holistic phenomenon and a continuous process with its own pattern of evolution. This challenge creates the need for projects which present Ukraine on an international stage, with the participation of recognized and accomplished artists of both older and younger generations, whose work demonstrates the diversity of Ukrainian Contemporary Art. The featured artists draw attention to the key trends and developments in Ukrainian art over the past two decades. The older generation represents the vivid splash of the 1990s, which resulted in two main schools that determined the appearance of Ukrainian art of that period — the Post-Modern Figurative and the Abstract Neo-Avant-Garde. The main representatives of these two movements have been included in our exhibition. They have followed the artistic path of independent Ukraine from the early days. Young artists of the 2000s, however, are by no means a less vivid. They are in search of their own individual styles, their own contribution to the process, continuing the direction set by their predecessors, but already in a different formal and semantic range, and with an arsenal of different media. Despite their age, all artists have already seen considerable interest in their work among the art world. Our selected artists are some of the most visible and prominent figures of the Ukrainian Contemporary Art scene, who managed to clearly express the cultural specificity and autonomy of our country with an emphasis on cultural value. These artists have been recognized by influential experts and leading museums, including from the UK, where many works are highly regarded. Their creativity is the face of Ukraine at numerous international exhibitions, auctions and biennale. However, it is for the first time that Ukraine will present a collective project, bringing together the various representatives of Ukraine’s Contemporary Art scene, who determine its general direction and momentum. In addition, for the first time in the history of Ukrainian Contemporary Art, the Ukrainian Foundation presents works from its own collection. We thank Firtash Foundation, as well as Co-Founder Lada Firtash, for the opportunity to present the best of contemporary Ukrainian culture and for the contribution to the positive image of Ukraine in Europe. Igor Abramovych, Curator
Ukraine today has one of the most vibrant art scenes of the Post-Soviet space. Supported by a dedicated group of collectors and galleries, artists are given the opportunity and freedom to work across media exploring widely varying subject matters. Numerous exhibition projects, both local and international, bring attention to Ukrainian Contemporary Art, which has marked its presence on the international art scene over the last few years. This exhibition is organised by the Firtash Foundation as part of Days of Ukraine in the UK. It aims to showcase the highlights of Ukraine’s current contemporary art scene. The exhibition will showcase various themes and techniques developed by the artists from Kiev and beyond. Ukrainian soil appears as symbolic prima materia in Oleksandr Zhyvotkov’s enigmatic mixed-media paintings and in Anatoliy Kryvolap’s mesmerising landscapes, which explore the artist’s personal visions of light and hue. Abstraction and materiality reign in Tiberiy Silavshi’s monochromes and Oleksandr Klymenko’s explosions of colour. Socio-economic issues are addressed in Pavlo Kerestey’s video and performance works and utopian visions explored in Pavlo Makov’s pseudo-mystical works on paper resembling ancient scrolls and Victor Sydorenko’s levitating weightless figures. Gathered under a deliberately ambiguous title «Natsprom» Oleg Tistol, Mykola Matsenko, Marina Skugareva and many of their younger followers explore idiosyncrasies of Ukranian artistic identity. Their practices build a new visual language and brush over post-modernist concerns in order to accentuate the realities of their own environment and cognition characteristic of post-soviet Ukraine. While on the other side of the spectrum, artists such as Maxim Mamsikov and Igor Gusev have adopted the hyper-realist style, depicting every-day life, people and objects as fragments of collective memory. The spectacle comes to the fore in large scale canvases of Arsen Savadov and Vasily Tsagolov, who each in their own individual style provides saturated renderings of the world through the prism of media inspired dreamland. Combining seemingly irreconcilable characters and settings their works provide a witty commentary on the visions and desires of a contemporary man. Although this list is not nearly exhaustive, all artists presented in Contemporary Ukrainian Artists have made an important mark on the development of Ukrainian art in the last twenty years — a period of great socio-political turbulence and change. The new era of independence and increased political stability heralds a time for international recognition for the culture and arts of the country. By introducing many of these artists to the London public for the first time, this exhibition will hopefully spur further interest in Ukrainian Contemporary Art leading to more research, discourse and exciting projects. In Odesa Gusev headed an art-raiders movement, which became famous for its neo-Dadaist actions in a legendary Odesa flea market, where the artists created unconventional artworks «here and now». The art raiders’ actions took place regularly between 2007 and 2009, and gradually turned into a series of spontaneous curatorship projects involving artists from Odesa, Kyiv, and abroad. Igor Gusev was one of the first Ukrainian artists represented at a Sotheby’s auction and a Phillips de Pury & Co. auction in New York. OLEKSANDR K LY M E N K O
Born in 1963 in Luhansk. He is a graduate of the Kyiv State Art Institute. Klymenko is one of the founders of the legendary Paris Commune arts squat and the initiator of «Ukraine’s 20 th Century Art» and «Volition for the Boundless: The Experience of Understanding the Metaphysical and Other Projects». A painter, curator, and contributor to the theory of art in its own right, Klymenko is a perfect example of an intellectual artist for whom art makes sense only as a tool of unrestrained philosophical searches for the sense of being and a spiritual practice of self-improvement. Klymenko regards transcendent freedom of creation and endless variety of self-expression as the most important concept and relentlessly experiments with various new techniques in painting, etching, and photography — art freely flowing from the figurative towards the abstract. His works are regularly exhibited at Phillips auctions. Selected exhibitions: «Terrain Orientation» (2013, National Art Museum of Ukraine, Kyiv); «20 Years of Presence» (2011, Modern Art Research Institute, Kyiv); «Independent» (2011, Mystetskyi Arsenal, Kyiv); International Exhibition of Contemporary Art Dedicated to the 60 th Anniversary of the UN (2006, Palace of Nations, Geneva, Switzerland); «Carefree Travels in the Endless» (2005, Kyiv Museum of Russian Art, Kyiv); «The Crossroads» (2001, Museum of the History of Art, Vienna). A N AT O L I Y KRYVOLAP
Born in 1946 in Yahotyn (Kyiv region). He graduated from the Kyiv State Art Institute. He was among the founders of the Ukrainian Art group Pictorial Reserve (1992); in the early 1990s this group declared that the main objective of painting was to liberate it from all features of real life. In 2000 he moved to the village of Zasupoyivka near Yahotyn, where he currently lives and works. After ten years of working with abstraction in the early 2000s he returned to figurative painting. Bright and rich in color and texture his works are called an example of «the new Ukrainian landscape». Kryvolap is one of the most popular Ukrainian artists among domestic and foreign collectors. In 2011 his works twice set a world record for sales of Ukrainian art in international markets. The latest record was set for his work a «Horse. Evening» at an auction of contemporary art at Phillips in London. The painting sold for $186 200. Kryvolap is a laureate of the annual Taras Shevchenko National Prize (2012) in the Fine Arts category. Makov uses the technique in combination with ready-made everyday objects: maps, guides, note books, receipts, etc. His famous series — The Gardens, Book of Days, Utopia, Shooting Target — are actually mappings of stark reality and, at the same time, images of a utopian macro world of the artist’s vision. MAXIM MAMSIKOV
Born in 1968 in Kyiv. He graduated from the Kyiv State Art Institute. Mamsikov’s paintings portray everyday things but show them from unusual perspectives not seen by the human eye: a bird’s-eye view, for example, or an object in the process of falling or flying up. After a large-scale show of the artist’s works at the «Art Moscow» exhibition within the framework of the Moscow Biennale, and after his successful participation in the London auctions of Phillips, Mamsikov unexpectedly turned back to pocket-size paintings, which had made him famous in the 1990s as one of the leaders of the New Wave. During the 1987 FIAC Art Fair in Paris, the painting was sold by Galerie de France for $120 000. In the 1990s, Savadov created a number of photo projects — «Donbass-Chocolate», «Fashion at the Graveyard», «The Book of the Dead», «The Collective Red» — that had a significant impact on establishing the place of Ukrainian art in the global context. Through photography, Savadov turned to painting, giving it new trans-media features. His creative works exceed the limits of the classic «beautiful», bringing a therapeutic, electric-shock-like effect. Arsen Savadov is the first Ukrainian artist to have a work put up for auction at Sotheby’s (a photo from his «Donbass-Chocolate» series, in 2007). He represented Ukraine at the 49 th Venice Biennale in 2001. Selected exhibitions: «Berliner Liste» (2013, Dymchuk Gallery at Kraftwerk Berlin, Germany); «Terrain Orientation» (2013, National Art Museum of Ukraine, Kyiv); «Blow-Up» (2011, PinchukArtCentre, Kyiv); «Ukrainian New Wave» (2009, National Art Museum, Kyiv); «Painting» (2007, Daneyal Mahmood Gallery, New York); «Donbass-Chocolate» (2003, Orel Art Gallery, Paris); «Kokto» (2002, Guelman Gallery, Kyiv). MARINA S K U G A R E VA
Born in 1962 in Kyiv. After graduating from the Taras Shevchenko Secondary Republican School of Arts, she continued her education at the Dagestan High School of Arts in Makhachkala, Russia, then at the Lviv Institute of Applied and Decorative Arts. Her first painting appeared in a squat on Furmannyi Lane in Moscow, where she lived in the late 1980s–early 1990s with her husband, Oleg Tistol. She earned acclaim with her «cross-media» stitched paintings, for which she invented a unique technique that merged an austere and disciplined artistic perfection with homemade «handiwork». This fresh approach continued the avant-garde traditions of the early 20 th century, merging «high art» with the «low» and, for the first time in contemporary Ukrainian art, introducing a feminist slant. The artist dedicated three of her most famous series to the magic realism of daily life («Tables», second half of the 1990s–2000), traveller’s notes («Roads», 2004–2009), and the human body («Nude», 1988–2011; also «Good Housekeepers», 2007–2011). Her artistic works are regularly on display at Sotheby’s and Phillips. Selected exhibitions: «Great and Grand» (2013, Mystetskyi Arsenal, Kyiv); «Terrain Orientation» (2013, National Art Museum of Ukraine, Kyiv), «Contemporary Ukrainian Artists» (2012, YermilovCentre, Kharkіv); «The Kitchen» (2011, SMuGа, Sumy, Ukraine); «Made in UKR» (2007, TSEKH Gallery, Kyiv); «Presents for…» (2006, ARTStrelka Projects, Moscow); «Marina Skugareva» (1996, +/- Gallery, Basel, Switzerland). Selected collections: Zaporizhzhia Museum of Arts (Zaporizhzhia, Ukraine), Moscow House of Photography, Municipal Gallery of Odense (Odense, Denmark), Christoph Merian Stiftung (Basel, Switzerland), SC Johnson Kyiv Corporation (Kyiv).

VA S Y L T S AG O LO V
Born in 1957 in Digora, Northern Osetia. He received his education in the Pictorial Art Department at the Kyiv State Art Institute. Tsagolov is one of the leaders of the New Wave movement and a former resident of the Paris Commune arts squat. In the early 2000s he was the first to introduce new media into Ukrainian art, stirring emotions with his performances and provocative videos. He has since returned to painting. Tsagolov is often compared to the film director Quentin Tarantino for his black humour, colorful characters, and soft spot for ruthlessness. His mystic and ironic series, including «Ukrainian X-Files» (2002) and «Phantoms of Fear» (2003), earned him the reputation of being a «magician» of the post-metaphysical era, where funny tales are actually modern myths woven from a mix of folk traditions and global pop culture. Selected exhibitions: «Berliner Liste» (2013, Dymchuk Gallery at Kraftwerk Berlin, Germany); «Terrain Orientation» (2013, National Art Museum of Ukraine, Kyiv); «Fear Has Big Eyes» (2011, PinchukArtCentre, Kyiv); «Ukrainian New Wave» (2009, National Art Museum, Kyiv); «Thaw» (2008, Chelsea Art Museum, New York; Russian State Museum, St. Petersburg, Russia); «Sots-Art: The Political Art of Russia, 1972 to the Present» (La Maison Rouge Fund of Contemporary Art, Paris); «Ukrainian X-Files» (2002, Guelman Gallery, Moscow). M AT V I Y VAY S B E R G
Born in 1958 in Kyiv. He studied at the Taras Shevchenko Republican Art School and then in the department of book graphic arts at the Ukrainian Polygraphic Institute. With the art critic Andriy Mokrousov, he defined the concept of the so-called «Kyiv rearguard» — a figurative, narrative, anthropological, existential art — as a response to the intervention of post-modern practices. He called himself a non-theistic painter and, while an atheist, turned to religious themes. The painter illustrated the novel The Idiot by Fyodor Dostoyevsky, as well as the books of Shalom Aleichem, Isaak Babel, Carl Jung, Soren Kierkegaard, and Jose Ortega y Gasset. Selected exhibitions: «Terrain Orientation» (2013, National Art Museum of Ukraine, Kyiv); «Contemporary Ukrainian Artists» (2012, YermilovCentre, Kharkіv); «Sparrows, Hippopotamus, and Others» (2011, Triptych ART Gallery, Kyiv); «From Chaos to Order» (2008, Bottega Gallery, Kyiv); «The Sixth Day» (2005, Triptych Gallery, Kyiv); «Retrospective» (Art Gallery of Kyiv Mohyla Academy); «Comet Wine» (1998, National Art Museum of Ukraine, Kyiv).
