In 1821, Major Charles Wilhelm Bulow acquired nearly 5,000 acres in the Florida wilderness, and so began Bulowville, a plantation that he hoped would become the most prosperous in the region. It was a fine piece of land with moss-laden trees, bordered by a tributary of the Halifax River. With this economical means of shipping crops to market, the plantation flourished. However, the vision wasn’t fulfilled until Charles’ son, John, inherited the estate and built a thriving sugar mill. As fate would have it, at the height of young Bulow’s success, the Second Seminole War erupted and he had to abandon Bulowville. Unable to take anything with him, legend has it that John hid a chest of gold in the creek that now bears the family name. The town of Flagler Beach grew up around the property, and the Bulow estate changed little for well over a century. While Bulow’s chest was never found, the real treasure is easily seen in the natural splendor of this place.

emarkably, time and tourists have passed by this sleepy town. This is
“old Florida, quaint, quiet, and with an abundance of open spaces and natural wetlands. While it feels secluded, Bulow Shores is central to many things. Flagler Beach is about two miles away. Nearly five miles north on AIA is the town of Palm Coast offering championship golf and a world-class tennis facility. And with a proposed pedestrianfriendly Town Center, living here will be even more desirable. Around thirty miles north is picturesque St. Augustine, the oldest city in America, renowned for old-world charm. To enjoy top entertainment and sports venues, Jacksonville is about seventy-five miles north and Orlando is approximately seventy-five miles west. Another destination with plenty to offer, Daytona Beach, is about twenty-five miles south.
Flagler Beach boasts two state parks where visitors can fish, canoe, hike, and birdwatch. Of interest is the Sugar Mill Ruins at Bulow State Park, where visitors can walk through a remnant of Bulow family history.

BULOW SHORES. As we create a strong sense of community, we are ever mindful of our responsibility to respect nature. For example, the proposed community clubhouse design was inspired by antebellum architecture because of the way this timeless style compliments the scenic landscape of Bulow Shores. It features a wrap-around veranda that will offer a commanding view of the Intracoastal Waterway. Other amenities that are designed to bring people together include a proposed swimming pool and gazebo. And families will enjoy the convenience of a community boat launch, providing easy access to the Intracoastal. Plans include a canoe club on Bulow Creek where residents can launch their canoes or kayaks, and a creekside boardwalk that will be ideal for viewing sunsets. Tying the entire community together will be a network of nature trails that leads to various points of interest.

W E L C O M E to G R A C I O U S living with SOUTHERN H O S P I TA L I T Y. Taking their cues from antebellum architectural details, some of Florida’s prestigious builders will be inspired to recreate the grandeur that made this style so popular in the 1800s. Known for perfectly symmetrical designs, the Greek Revival, Classical Revival, and Federal Style reflected the balance and harmony desired in a home. Stately pillars and columns lent a magnificent touch and sense of strength. Balconies and porticos, also typical of the antebellum style, not only provided places for the family to gather, but also to feel connected to the world outside, and often opened to meticulously manicured formal gardens. Picture summer evenings on the porch sipping a mint julep, while the children capture fireflies in mason jars, and you’re almost there.

that in many ways transcends time or at least defies it. Life here moves to its own rhythm, slower and unhurried.
