a conceptual representation of ‘the grid of time’: a cage that holds us as we attempt to capture and control the rush of time. De Jorio Design has followed a similar developmental direction throughout the discotheque, in carefully detailed furnishings that include the bar counter, seating and tables of various heights. In the VIP area, a sensuous space furnished with comfy plush sofas, liquidity solidifies to become a blaze of vivid colours.

The concept of ‘liquid time’, flowing fluidly and freely, provided inspiration for the design of this large, panoramic discotheque, with its strikingly circular shape. The theme dominates the walls, which feature flowing forms of shining fuchsia, from which screen images emerge; the floor, enlivened by large planes of coloured glass; and the bar, where fuchsiastained resin emits a gush of brilliant colour into the space. where The MSC Poesia Opening April 2008 client Mediterranean Shipping Cruises floor area 615 m2
As the S32 is the only discotheque on board the MSC Poesia, De Jorio Design aimed for the look of a cool dance machine. The designers translated the brief – which requested neutrality, transparency and elegance – into a space that revolves around ‘pure geometry’, with beautifully finished surfaces and sophisticated lighting from a variety of sources. Areas organized around a central core are based on a 45° rotation scheme that allows for dynamic circulation. Purity of line and angularity highlight purpose-designed
furniture – sofas, armchairs, stools and tables – pieces that are a three-dimensional representation of the same mechanism that operates the dance-floor ‘engine’. Brushed stainless-steel surfaces and the clever use of different types of lighting – LED, neon, fibre-optic and plasma – create a play of light, shadow, brilliance and reflection that changes with the dancer’s point of view. The dichotomy between the cool matrix of the space and the gleaming green lighting is the surging lifeblood of S32.
