Bespoke and unusual - buzzwords for 2013 cursory glance at the massive pile of catalogues that arrived on my doormat before Christmas confirmed that ‘bespoke’ is a key concept in retailing at the moment. And that, of course, is excellent news for bespoke framing businesses, artists and retailers whose USP is their range of unique hand-made goods. Internet successs story NotOnTheHighStreet.com is a good example. Their catalogue is full of goods such as cufflinks featuring family photos, butterdishes inscribed with wedding dates, personalised Christmas cake toppers and bracelets with the recipient’s name spelt out in Morse code. One reason that Snappy Snaps, which used to make its money developing photographs, has survived the switch to digital photography is that it offers an imaginative range of personalised products, from flip-flops to clocks and baby-grows. US craft website Etsy.com, and its UK equivalent Folksy.com, are thriving: Etsy sold goods to the value of $437million (£274million) during the first seven months of 2012. People buy from sites such as Etsy and Folksy because they want stylish handmade goods that won’t be seen in every home in their street. (I did a lot of my Christmas shopping through these sites; the handmade earrings made from glass found on the beach for my niece, for example, arrived from the USA within a week, along with a personal note from the maker, and there was no chance that anyone else would source the same gift.) Philip O’Reilly’s fascinating article about creating sculpture using 3D printing technology (page 40) shows that the scope for personalised products can only increase. Soon retailers and artists will be producing scale models, or printed sculptures, of pets and loved ones, as well as digital prints. We’re in the middle of a cultural reaction against mass-produced goods bought from global brands. I’m not suggesting that brands such as Zara, Uniqlo and IKEA are losing customers, but that when it comes to gifts and special luxuries people are looking for something a little more unique. Today’s shoppers have high expectations and varied needs: they want inexpensive and accessible goods some of the time, but they are also seeking the bespoke and the unique, items that will reflect well on them and their personal style. This reinforces the idea, often discussed in these pages, that our industry should focus on added value and specialist products, rather than trying to compete on price when selling low-end ready-made products.

Guild Artists’ Exhibition details announced

The exhibition poster designed by Gordon King

THE FINE Art Trade Guild is proud to announce that this year’s Art & Framing Convention UK will include an exhibition of work by Guild artists. ‘The exhibition will showcase some of the finest examples of unique and dynamic artwork available from contemporary artists working in the UK today,’ enthused artist Anne Corless, who chairs the Guild’s Fine Art Committee. Guild member artists, galleries and publishers are invited to submit work for selection. Images must be emailed to awards@fineart.co.uk by 8 March. The maximum framed size is 100x50cm and it is acceptable to submit more than one image. The submission fee is £15 + VAT, and in the event of an artist’s work being rejected, £10 + VAT will be returned to the artist. The Fine Art Committee will make their selection during March. The exhibtion will take place on Saturday 11 and Sunday 12 May at the picturesque Old Swan Hotel, Harrogate. Entry for visitors is free and all artwork will be for sale. Over 100 artworks will be included in the exhibition. Artwork will be uploaded to the Guild website, and will be linked to artists’ own websites. Both trade visitors and members of the public will attend the show, and guests at the Awards Dinner will view the artwork during the drinks reception that precedes the black tie dinner. awards@fineart.co.uk 8 January 2013

The various types and qualities of mountboard are analysed in detail, as well as how these tie in with Guild standards. There are separate sections on framing textiles, oil paintings and animal skin, plus case studies where framers discuss actual projects. Publication of the book is sponsored by Conservation by Design, which provides conservation products to galleries and museums all over the world. ARTIST’S SKETCH ‘Customer feedback is incredibly important for artists’

Sarah Bayliss

began my career as an interior designer, then I moved into painting murals: Italian courtyards, rainforests and themed bedrooms for children. However, my career as an artist did not really take off until I painted my first cow, which I named after my mother, Dorothy. A friend saw my painting and fell in love with it. This kind friend entered the canvas into an art competition and from there I ended up with a trade stand at a small, local agricultural show. I will never forget the first day of that show when the public came into the marquee and looked at my work, initially quite a small collection of about eight animals painted on canvas. It was the most fantastic feeling I had ever experienced: to have painted something that, quite simply, made people smile. My stand was soon surrounded by people admiring my artwork and not only did I sell several paintings, but I took orders for a number of commissions. I have never looked back. Meeting one’s customers, chatting to them about their likes and dislikes, and getting feedback on one’s work is so important for any artist. For example, during 2011 I was asked on countless occasions to paint chickens and so Wendy and Julia were introduced into my 2012 collection. They have proved incredibly popular; without the opportunity to interact with my customers they may never have materialised. Customers love to meet

I

the artist, to have a brief explanation about what lies behind the canvas - why you have painted what you have painted, so to speak. They are always highly amused when I tell them that all my animal characters are named after family, friends and neighbours. I have now built up a solid body of collectors and have developed some genuine friendships with customers. The public, however, are shrewd. Buying a painting is a big investment, both financially and aesthetically. The artwork will hopefully occupy a prominent position in the customer’s home, defining their tastes and providing many years of enjoyment for them, their families and friends. With this in mind, many potential buyers like to see the work several times before they choose their favourite piece and make that financial commitment. I really enjoy the moment when a customer finally decides which of my animals they want to take into their home, even if that decision is only reached after two or three visits to my stand. Other customers take a brochure at a show, pin it to their fridge door and drop subtle hints to their partners, family and friends, so they are eventually given one of my pictures or a piece of merchandise as a present. There is nothing more satisfying than selling a painting and seeing the pleasure that someone gains from something you have produced. I wouldn’t miss it for the world. After all, every artist knows that into every piece of artwork goes a little bit of the artist themselves. ● www.sarahbaylissfineart.co.uk

Inbrief Moab introduces dual semigloss 330

Independents win by joining forces INDEPENDENT RETAILERS in a regenerated indoor market in Walthamstow, east London, have joined forces to promote themselves as the place to go for unusual, often one-of-akind goods that can’t be seen all over the internet or the high street. Visitors to Wood Street Indoor Market will find antiques, second-hand furniture, vintage clothing and retro music, as well as picture framing, cake decorating and a range of craft shops and cafés. The traders and makers in the market are promoting the fact that shoppers can commission bespoke goods and buy ‘up-cycled’ products, a welcome antidote to the mass-produced goods of which discerning shoppers are becoming tired.

‘Walthamstow has a flourishing art and design base,’ explains promotor Carolyn Abbott. ‘Artists and craftspeople are increasingly seeing the potential of getting together in these niche retail spaces within a community of independent dealers and makers. This indoor market, which was originally built as a cinema, is swiftly developing a reputation as one of London’s secret gems.’ Shoppers looking for art and framing can visit Folly & Frill, where they will find a range of Walthamstow-inspired artwork. SHOP TALK ‘There is no need to re-invent the wheel, just put your own unique spin on it’

Jan Baker

o here I am, about to write my first piece about retail. What would people like to read, I wonder? Well, I know what I would like to read, and it isn’t about how gloomy the outlook is. I worked in manufacturing for over 20 years and that was never a walk in the park. But running your own business has to be your job, your hobby and your passion. If it isn’t, it’s not worth it. So what made me take this step? As for many people, redundancy was the catalyst that made me start the business. When I began trading my main work was framing, and that still accounts for about 50 per cent of the business, but the gallery has blossomed, and, like a second child, I love them both. Before I launched the business I spent an inordinate amount of time ploughing through a Sage business plan, spreadsheets and questions, but it proved to be time well spent. It made me think about the details which, if neglected, may be your downfall. The big stuff - rent, rates, wages, heat and light, equipment and stock are obvious essentials, but where the customers will come from and what will make you stand out from the crowd are much tougher questions. As part of my initial research I visited 20 galleries and frame shops in the area. The level of service and ambience varied from sublime to grim. But each visit taught me something, if only what not to do. I still make a point

S

of visiting other retailers, and I still have much to learn. Fine Art Trade Guild regional events have been an enormous help; getting together with like-minded people to discuss challenges, solutions and opportunities is invaluable. Those who have been in the business a long time are generally very willing to share their knowledge and expertise. As part of my research, I went to see Ashley Younger from Wessex Pictures, who gave me a massive amount of advice. His help not only enabled me to complete my business plan, but guided me through the practical day-to-day side of picture framing, advice on matters that everyone just seems to know. Don’t just look at how our sector does it, look at the big boys who spend millions on sales and marketing, such as John Lewis and M&S, for inspiration on colours and trends. I know that small touches in presentation can make people come back again and again. Each picture or gift I sell is wrapped with ribbon and tissue, and at Christmas I spray the tissue with cinnamon perfume, just like they do at Tiffany’s, which costs pence but makes customers feel special. When their gift is wrapped with a big bow their faces say it all and I know they’ll be back. I have learnt to ask for guidance and look to see if there are other ways to get the job done. So my advice is, don’t be proud, ask other people: there is no need to re-invent the wheel, just put your own unique spin on it! ● www.theframe-gallery.co.uk

IN BUSINESS ‘We are categorising glass and glazing and introducing an artists’ exhibition’

Louise Hay

nother year over and a new one begun. I’ve come into work infused with hope for 2013. We spent 2012 under a cloud of doom, even if things were not quite as bad as we were led to believe. We all need to give ourselves the best chance of success by seizing opportunities and taking a fresh look at what we do. It’s too easy to miss out because we don’t have time to take up lucky breaks, can’t find the head space to think about the changes we have to make or to analyse the whys and wherefores of our routines. We need a mental spring clean to go with the actual reorganisation that welcomes in a new year. Let’s vow to bring in new initiatives to all our businesses and not to miss any chances of success. At the Guild we offer a raft of programmes designed to help members get ahead and it saddens me to hear that people don’t have time to engage with them. Make 2013 the year when you attend at least one networking event, whether it’s your local branch, Making Pictures evening or the Art & Framing Industry Convention UK in May. Members report that the networking and education at Guild events is worth the fees alone. And do take advantage of the seminar programme we lay on at Spring Fair International, coming up soon, and the Art & Framing Industry Convention; you may learn the one thing that will turn your business around, or give you a new skill that sets you apart from your competitors.

A

Make time to enter the art and framing industry awards; entry to the business categories is free to all and the deadline’s not until March so there’s still time. Winning, or being shortlisted, gives you something to shout about as last year’s entrants showed in the super media coverage they achieved. And there’s a lot to be gained from just entering the framing competitions, never mind actually carrying off the trophy. Framers tell me that the opportunity to get creative and experiment brings dividends in developing new designs and having a talking point to display. This year we’re looking for miniatures – see page 9 for entry information or go to Awards & Convention on our website. As for us, we’re carrying on with the mountboard licensing initiative launched a year ago; taking a fresh look at the proposal for an Inkjet Print Quality Assurance programme; categorising glass and glazing, and adding an artists’ exhibition to the Art & Framing Convention. That’s just for starters. And don’t forget we’re here to help. If you’re struggling with a business or technical problem you’re not alone. Give us a call – you’d be surprised at what we know in the office and if we can’t help directly we’ll give you a good steer on how to find the support you need. I hope to meet with you at Spring Fair International; look us out in Hall 4, stand D84, and in the meantime have a happy and successful new year. ● Louise Hay is the Chief Executive of the Fine Art Trade Guild

READERS ARE urged to enter the Art & Framing Industry Awards, a celebration of everything that’s excellent in our trade. There are awards for technical framing skills, artists, customer service, innovation, sales promotion and retailing. Applications and completed frames must be submitted by 8 March. Art trade loses Michael Embden

SADLY, BRIGHTON based landscape artist Michael Embden died in August 2012, aged 64. Michael studied graphics at Brighton College of Art, then forged a successful career as an illustrator, designing more than 100 book covers. This phase of his career culminated in a lavishly illustrated edition of Rider Haggard’s novel She; the V&A Museum bought one of the original paintings for the book. In the 1990’s Michael dedicated more of his time to landscape painting, developing a technique of watercolour painting using multiple layers of pure washes to create works of exquisite and

atmospheric resonance. He joined The Fiveways Artist Group in Brighton and held his own open house every May for 15 years. His landscapes became very popular with collectors and there was soon a waiting list, as his paintings took upwards of eight weeks to complete. Michael was passionate about nature, music, poetry and all the arts. He lived life to the full and always saw the best in people or difficult situations and never spoke badly of anyone. He is greatly missed by his widow Pamela, whom he married in 1970, his two children and four grandchildren.

IN PRINT ‘Printing is easy. There is nothing complicated about printing’

Mick Hodson

rinting is easy! There’s nothing complicated about printing! There, that will annoy a few printers. From when I was a young designer in the biggest book design studio in Europe in the 60s, it was apparent that printers were a bunch of ‘That’s what you get, mate’ merchants. Not to be too harsh, it was time consuming and expensive to make corrections, so nobody asked them to do so and they became complacent. To a bunch of creatives this was laying down the gauntlet. We decided the time had come to fight back and get what we knew was possible. This meant learning how to colour correct proofs, how machines work, and when you ask a guy to reduce the yellow in that bit, how he does it. Only then can you tell printers which areas of colour they have got wrong, The essential principles of printing are the same today. Now the process just misses out a few stages. Printers used to work alongside a repro house and image capture was achieved with a drum scanner for transparencies, while flat art was photographed, and filters were used to separate the CMYK colours. A piece of film, one for each of cyan, magenta, yellow and black was produced. Each film was then placed on a printing plate and exposing it to light transferred the image to the plate. This then got bolted to the press and the job was run. As the paper touched each plate in turn, the image built up. So there we go, nothing

P

complicated, and now it’s much easier because we can see how the printed image will look on a screen before we send it to the press or plotter. What you will be aware of is that the end bit is easy: press a button and the print comes out. The machine that the paper comes out of is a dumb animal. It only does what it is told. If you supply it with bad scans, bad plates or a bad file, the machine will give you a bad print. So we have to take control of the material that is fed to the machine – everything about the end result is controlled by the quality of the data you started with. The person who runs the machine is at the mercy of the person who created the repro, or, these days, the digital file. ‘Where is this going?’ I hear you say. Well, to get good prints you have to work with people who have a great deal of knowledge about colour reproduction, not someone who just buys a machine so they can have a go at giclée printing. Experienced printers are properly trained and will have learnt an awful lot through trial and error and making mistakes along the way. If you don’t know how to manage and correct colour then sooner or later you will come unstuck; pressing the buttons and dusting the machine is easy! Think camera, photographer, scanner, file preparation. These are more important than the type of machine or paper you use to create a print. Remember, rubbish in, rubbish out. ● www.mickhodson.co.uk www.gicleelondon.co.uk

Keeping your image safe DIASEC, A photo presentation solution from Kaymounting, has an in-built UV filter and neutral curing, say joint MDs Keith Reid and Dean Brown. ‘It contains no plasticisers and is resistant to fungicidal and bacterial agents, as well as air-borne pollutants. After curing, the whole airtight panel remains chemically inert and stable, so you be assured that your image will remain in pristine condition. The finished product can withstand changes in temperature and humidity too. We still have samples that were produced in the 1970s and there is no colour shift, the whites are still pure and there has been no acid erosion.’ www.kaymounting.co.uk 18 January 2013

FrameArt Expo in Milan in 2013

THE THIRD FrameArt Expo trade fair will take place in Milan from 22 to 24 March this year. The event showcases the best of European-made frames, along with framing materials and equipment, as well as artwork. ‘Made in Europe’ is an important aspect of the show, which seeks to promote the quality and heritage of European goods. In 2011 the organisers of FrameArt Expo reached an agreement with FAMA (The Frame Accessories Manufacturing Association), that the event would emphasise the superior materials and manufacturing processes that buyers of European made framing goods will experience. The second FrameArt Expo show, which was held in Rome last year, attracted 6500 visitors from 60 countries. The show will once again include an education and training programme for framers, which will be made up of workshops and lectures on business issues, profiting in a digital age and an analysis of current styles and trends. FrameArt Expo is held at the Fiera Milano exhibition centre alongside Photoshow, an international photo and digital imaging exhibition, which is now in its 14th year. Exhibitors report a useful crossover between visitors to the two events. UK framer Lyn Hall GCF Adv, Fringe Arts, attended the show in 2012. ‘One of my frames was entered into the framing competition by Arqadia so I ART BUSINESS TODAY

thought I’d combine a visit to the show with a trip to Rome with my family. It’s interesting to see how different framing is in Italy and the UK; they hardly use mounts, let alone decorated ones, and choose much heavier more decorative mouldings than we do.’ UK framing company Arqadia exhibited last year. ‘We always have a good show in Italy,’ says marketing manager Pauline Hutchinson. ‘We see many customers from all over the world and we class this as the main show for our export business. FrameArt Expo is all about quality of visitors, not the quantity. The show did suffer slightly due to the location in Rome last year, as the transport links are not good, but it will be in Milan in 2013, which is much better as the exhibition venue is centrally located on a metro line.’ UK supplier LION Picture Framing Supplies has exhibited for the last two years. MD Martin Harrold comments, ‘LION booked a small stand at the first FrameArt Expo in Milan two years ago. The show worked for us and we participated in the Rome event last year with more success. FrameArt Expo is looking strong for Milan in 2013. Our industry needs an international meeting place for moulding and equipment manufacturers, distributors and stakeholders and FrameArt Expo is now accepted as the worthy successor to the old SACA show.’ www.frameartexpo.com

Pooling resources HERTFORDSHIRE BASED landscape and wildlife photographer David Lawrence recently won the Photography 4 All competition organised by Rhodes Gallery, Bishop’s Stortford. David’s prize was an exhibition of his work at the Rhodes Art Complex in Bishop’s Stortford during November 2012. David wanted to have his work mounted and framed professionally in preparation for his first exhibition, so he contacted Richard Williams GCF of In a Frame, Sawbridgeworth, after searching for a reliable local picture framer on the internet. Richard and David worked together to design mounting solutions and frames that would complement the images and give the exhibition a consistent look. David wanted some of his work produced as large canvases, to provide a ‘wow’ factor as people entered the exhibition hall. After collaboration with Richard, Bob Macintosh of First 4 Frames in Falkirk was asked to produce the canvases. Richard used Twitter to search for a company to carry out large scale printing onto quality canvas. Richard stretched the canvases over Gallery stretcher bars from LION PFS. The images on canvas include a panoramic view of London and an evocative black and white close up of an African elephant. While on display in the entrance to Richard’s shop these large images created quite a talking point. davidjohnlawrencephotography.com www.inaframe.co.uk

Arqadia’s star artists revealed

Joint winners: My Long Eared Friend by Mary Herbert, above, and Valley of the Dolls by Doreen Bothwell

ARTISTS MARY Herbert and Doreen Bothwell are celebrating being named as the joint winners of Arqadia’s competition to find the UK’s star artist. Scores of artists entered the competition, which was judged by a team of industry experts including Guild CEO Louise Hay and Aquarelle Publishing’s Paul Taylor. Pet portrait artist Mary Herbert, from Ceredigion in west Wales, wowed the judges with her stunning pastel entitled My Long Eared Friend, while Doreen’s mixed media creation, Valley of the Dolls, is a contemporary depiction of the varied landscape that surrounds her home in Aberdeen. Their artwork will be displayed to some of the art world’s most influential people at the Guild’s awards event in May 2013. It will also be professionally framed and used by Arqadia’s sales team during in-store promotional activity throughout the course of next year. Mary said, ‘I am really pleased.

When I read about the competition on Arqadia’s website I thought I’d give it a go, but I never expected to win. It’s a high point in my career. I feel very proud that my work will be displayed at the awards and seen by a lot of people.’ Doreen agrees with Mary’s sentiments, adding, ‘I am absolutely delighted to be named joint winner. I still can’t believe it. I’m reeling from the shock. It’s great to be recognised in this way.’ Limited editions of 30 6x4” prints will be made of each work, half of which will be kept by Arqadia for framing, while the others will be awarded to Doreen and Mary to display or sell. The artists also each take away £150 worth of Arqadia products. Congratulations also go to runners up Nicola Slattery, for her acrylic on board painting Two Minute Hat, and to Neil Crawford Robertson, for his pen, ink and watercolour creation Herbert Frog. www.arqadia.co.uk

photographic and fine art paper. These include roll media and high quality cut sheet output, featuring various surface textures and the latest fine art papers. Natural history and botanical artist Tina Bone recently upgraded to the Stylus Pro 4900, which she bought from specialist photographic and imaging wholesaler TT Imaging, which is based in Newport Pagnell. Tina invested in the previous model, the 4000, in 2005 and has been producing open and limited editions of her delicate finely-detailed work ever since. ‘The Stylus Pro 4900 is very smooth running and quiet. I could hear my old machine from downstairs, but the new model is almost silent. This model has 11 inks, whereas the previous one had eight, and the difference is significant. The new machine is capable of producing an astonishing range of tones and hues. The colours are incredibly vibrant and clear and the level of detail is impressive. I exhibit at national art exhibitions where buyers are looking for exceptional quality and I am confident that my printer will produce artwork that meets customers’ high expectations.’ For further information contact TT Imaging on 0845 834 0938 or visit www.ttimaging.co.uk www.epson.co.uk www.tinabonedtp.co.uk Left: Self-publishing artist Tina Bone printing one of her delicately coloured botanical works with her new Epson Stylus Pro 4900 Right: A British wildlife study published and printed by Tina Bone

Delegates from the Art Copyright Coalition outside an art fair in Guangzhou, China

EIGHT ART publisher members of the Art Copyright Coalition, an international organisation dedicated to copyright protection, met in Guangzhou, China to walk the Canton Fair and the Jinhan Fair to assess the level of copyright infringements at these shows. The group found over 40 Chinese companies with significant levels of illegal copies. Because two days were insufficient to cover both shows, the group estimated the number of infringing companies to be higher. The group confronted each company found to be infringing. Infringing product included canvas wall decor, framed art, tableware, boxes, tables, pitchers, placemats, linens, screens and other items. The nature of the infringements ranged from exact copies of entire images, to copies of components of images combined with other copied material, to slightly modified but clearly copied versions of copyright images. In many cases the art publishers removed infringing products with the compliance of the exhibitor. In other cases, attempts to remove infringing items met strong resistance, and there were several cases of heated exchanges (even to the point of attracting attention from the police). The art publishers documented their findings with photos, and in some cases obtained catalogues or CDs from the exhibitors.

The art publishers met with organisers of the Jinhan Fair and asked for assistance in combating the counterfeiters. The organisers did not accept the publishers’ digital collections (iPads, tablets and websites) as evidence of copyright ownership. The art publishers argued that the organiser’s requirements for proof are so overly burdensome as to effectively condone counterfeiting. The art publishers did not approach the organisers of the Canton Fair due to time constraints. The group plans to make direct contact with the offending parties. For the most frequently copied artworks, individual art publishers are considering completing the full bureaucratic requirements of the shows in order to gain leverage to remove products, and if possible to shut down counterfeit operations. Limited resources make it difficult for any single company to combat infringements on its own, so the companies combined forces to form the ACC. The delegation to Guangzhou was comprised of the following companies: Canadian Art Prints & Winn Devon Art Group, Canada; Gango Editions, USA; Kunstanstalten May, Germany; Felix Rosenstiel’s Widow & Son, UK; Sun Dance Graphics, USA; Top Art, Italy; Wild Apple Graphics, USA; and World Art Group, USA. nick.roe@felixr.com (UK contact) ART BUSINESS TODAY

World of watercolours Have you always been an artist? Yes. My dad is an artist and my family supported my decision to go to art school, where I studied graphic design, illustration and advertising. When I left college I benefited from the Enterprise Allowance Scheme, which gave entrepreneurs a small income if certain criteria were met. I held an exhibition of local views in the library when I was a student, and I sold everything, which led to a series of commissions. For the first six or seven years I said yes to everything, so I was painting portraits, pets, local views and architectural commissions. I was gradually able to raise my prices. At college I learnt how to draw impressions of buildings based on plans, which was very useful financially, and I learnt a lot about drawing that way. I wandered into local galleries and introduced myself, which led to quite a few of them taking on my work. A friend of my dad’s recommended me to the Malcolm Innes Gallery in Edinburgh and London, and from there I was spotted by Di Rollo Gallery, Edinburgh, who published my work for a number of years. I was mainly selling street scenes of Newcastle, Edinburgh and Venice at that time. When did you start publishing? In 1995 my wife Susan left her job with a building society and started working full-time with me. We organised a highly successful exhibition at our home and things grew from there. Susan manages the website and handles marketing and PR. Most other jobs are shared between us, with Susan taking charge when I am away on painting trips. We sell direct to the public through the gallery at our home and we sell through the website. We also sell through around 50 galleries. We don’t have time to do any printing ourselves. We used to produce print runs of up to 950, but the norm ART BUSINESS TODAY

has decreased, and we tend to stick with limited editions of 25, 45 or 95. That keeps the artwork exclusive. How do you market your work? Susan and I both have Twitter and Facebook accounts and we are both pretty active with new media. In the run up to Christmas we prioritised social media communication, in order to stir up business. Initially we felt we had to open social media accounts because everyone else was, but it was definitely the right thing to do as we’ve made sales and met good clients that way. I write a blog, which is sometimes updated five times a week, while at other times I don’t write anything for two weeks. I also have a personal Facebook account, which I keep separate from my professional profile, which is important. As with face-to-face networking, social networking will only be successful if you have a clear strategy and aims. I was a member of the networking group BNI for five years, which was very useful, but I left as the demands on my time started to outweigh the benefits. Only one person from each profession is allowed to join a chapter, and you all help each other find business, which works very well if you have a strong chapter. I learnt a lot about marketing and PR too. I value face-to-face

website, so we come up on the first page when people are searching for items such as ‘paintings of the Tyne Bridge’ or ‘print of Lindisfarne Castle’. It’s worth spending a few hundred pounds on photography, so your website looks professional. We’ve made a few videos too. It shouldn’t cost more than a thousand pounds to make a short video, but you must budget for professional editing and camera work. I don’t mind approaching new galleries directly. I check that my work would be right for the gallery first, then I call and introduce myself. I’ve got a good track record of sales, and my originals fetch up to £7000, so galleries are generally prepared to talk to me. How much time do you spend painting? It varies, but around two or three days a week. The rest of the time I’m working on the accounts, making deliveries, visiting framers, networking, dealing with customers in the gallery, sorting out orders and helping with promotional events. Di Rollo Gallery are no longer publishing any of my new images, as they’ve changed direction. I am not closed to the idea of working with another publisher. We occasionally sell an image for a one-off fee, but licensing isn’t something we push. I donate images to charities to use on Christmas cards; while this doesn’t generate income, it supports charities and gets my work and contact details out there. ● www.alanreed.com See Alan’s work on page 30

Alex Borissov

Newcomers’ Gallery

Promoting the concept of sustainability, Alex Borissov has created a ‘roll painting’, an artwork made on a used CWS cotton hand towel roll. Human impact on environment can be reduced not only by consuming less, but also by optimising the full cycle of production, use and disposal of goods. CWS cotton hand towel roll, for example, during its life cycle replaces some 30,000 paper towels, and now it has found a second life as an artwork. CASE STUDY ARQADIA Arqadia sales director STEVE BURKE explains how the company is capitalising on the shift towards online media ‘There is an active online community in the UK framing industry. Because of this, to maintain a market-leading status, it was imperative that Arqadia adapt to the commercial environment and developing a cohesive online strategy. The buzz surrounding picture framing across social media platforms offered a good opportunity for us to engage with a wide range of customers, so in order to steer the debate on these topics and drive online enquiries, we knew we needed to put ourselves out there and get involved. As a well-known brand, the decision to undertake a social media campaign was not taken lightly. If you cannot commit to providing quality, engaging content on a regular basis whilst maintaining consistent messaging, you could find that a new media venture could do your brand more harm than good, and that was something we were very much aware of from the start. The key was to define who our audience was, and then decide what we wanted them to think about us. Once that was agreed, we stuck with it. Developing a strategic social media programme to give online users a mechanism to both share their content and find inspiration about framing was a priority for us, and we held many workshops to decide on this focus and messaging before posting a single thing. The proliferation of readily available user-generated content,

fuelled by social networking, means that it is now easier than ever to find and share inspirational content and images. For example, consumers may choose to connect with an influential and trusted photography blogger online before they decide to buy a certain camera or brand. Because of this, online content producers are increasingly becoming a key factor in the consumer decisionmaking process. We decided on a two-platform approach, focussing on our Facebook and Twitter feeds. Twitter is a very effective way of spreading information such as special offers, new products or company news. Facebook presents a huge opportunity to find new customers and connect with them and their personal contacts. Both platforms offer us the opportunity to develop our relationships with customers by offering them unique commentary and advice. Our wish for the social media programme was to identify Arqadia as the definitive voice in the UK framing sector. Registered accounts customers have long been given access to a comprehensive suite of business tools through our website. The PR Toolkit is designed to help our customers implement successful PR programmes with a minimum of hassle, and the Framers’ Haven provides a wealth of information. When we unveiled our new-look website last summer, we took the opportunity to synchronise all our customer initiatives, including the social media campaign, into one brand, 4Walls by Arqadia. Those wanting bite-sized information can access our Facebook or Twitter pages, while those wanting more comprehensive advice can go directly to the 4Walls portal on the website. This level of accessibility is paramount in a growing digital market. We are proud of the continuing shift towards online ordering, with approximately 25 per cent of our customers now purchasing online. We have embraced the possibilities of new media and have already started seeing the benefits. If you do too, in twelve months time, you may wonder how you ever ran your business without it.’
