Tala Madani - Rear Projection Nottingham Contemporary | 2014 | 9781907421075 | English Acqn 23470 | Pb | 24x32cm | 104pp | 62 ills | £20 Tala Madani is one of the most original painters to have emerged in recent years. Her work reflects on masculinity, group dynamics, sexuality and power play topics that are explored with humour, as well as impossible cartoon violence. So called feminine colours or patterns are applied to the macho activities.

Stephen Willats - Control. Work 1962-69 Raven Row | 2014 | 9780956173980 | English | Acqn 23458 Pb | 21x27cm | 92pp | 55 ills | £12.95 This is the first survey of work by Stephen Willats from the 1960’s. Bourgeois’s work is personal yet universal, rooted in the details of her own life, but reaching out to touch the lives of others. This exhibition of work on paper presents some of her most intimate work, both drawing and writing.

Believing that drawing is a mechanism for exploration as much as a tool for representation, Kovats presents drawings by mapmakers, writers, shipbuilders, whalers, soldiers, sailors, artists, archaeologists, cartographers, scientists, uranographers, engineers and dreamers - a diverse selection united by the sense that in making the drawing they are looking for something. 4

Sternberg Press

Remy Zaugg - The Art Museum of My Dreams Or A Place For The Work And The Human Being Sternberg Press | 2013 | 9783956790140 | English Acqn 23223 | Pb | 21x28cm | 90pp | £15 In his influential 1986 text, now translated into English for the first time, Swiss artist Remy Zaugg (1943-2005) laid out fundamental ideas on the art museum. For him, the museum is an everyday tool that enables the encounter between viewer and work - raising the question of the kind of architecture appropriate for such a space.

Martin Herbert The Uncertainty Principle Sternberg Press | 2014 | 9783956790010 | English Acqn 23269 | Pb | 13x21cm | 184pp | 38 ills | £14.95 Martin Herbert’s The Uncertainty Principle is a collection of essays that reveals layers of unknowing and open-endedness within a diversity of contemporary art practices since the 1970s. If a work of art is always completed by the viewer, as Marcel Duchamp put it, then the works considered here equate completion with construction.

Jan Verwoert - Cookie! Sternberg Press | 2014 | 9783956790294 | English Acqn 23471 | Hb | 12x18cm | 252pp | £14.95 This new volume brings together a selection of Jan Verwoert’s most recent writings. COOKIE! is a sequel to Verwoert’s Tell Me What You Want, What You Really, Really Want. Here he addresses the forces at the heart of the tragicomedy that making, showing, and critiquing art implicates us in.

Terms of Exhibiting (from A to B) Sternberg Press | 2014 | 9783943365757 | English Acqn 23270 | Pb | 17x24cm | 320pp | 81 ills | £21.50 This publication explores themes of the exhibition through its terms - not, however, to confine into isolated conceptual categories, but to interconnect. These terms characterize exhibiting and emphasize a ‘between-ness.’ Examining a term lays bare its ruptures, shifts and recreations.

Brian Dillon - Objects in This Mirror Sternberg Press | 2014 | 9781934105795 | English Acqn 22676 | Pb | 12x19cm | 250pp | 25 ills | £16.50 Objects in This Mirror is a collection of essays on contemporary art, literature, landscape, aesthetics, and cultural history. Beginning with a polemical and personal defense of generalism and curiosity, Brian Dillon explores the variety of themes it is possible today to corral within the rubric of the critical essay.

Sweet Sixties - Specters and Spirits of a Parallel Avant-Garde Sternberg Press | 2014 | 9783956790393 | English Acqn 23493 | Pb | 17x25cm | 528pp | 350 ills | £21.95 “The air of the 1960s echoes a spirit of emancipation. And the newly arising art-scapes are interspersed with double agents: the streams between Soviet, North and South American, Western European, NonAligned, etc., are full of interlocutions, hidden pathways, and narratives of trade routes beyond the seemingly stable hegemonies of the blocs. 7

Sternberg Press, LES PRESSES DU REEL, REVOLVER PUBLISHING BY VVV

Peter Wachtler - Come On Sternberg Press | 2014 | 9783956790355 | English Acqn 23421 | Pb | 11x18cm | 128pp | £9.95 Passivity and contemplation characterize the narrators of Peter Wachtler’s stories. Some speak from the vantage point of death, musing about their lives, recalling formative experiences and decisive moments. Those still alive seem paralyzed - functioning or malfunctioning within their world, but unable to act upon it.

Sarah Lucas - Describe This Distance Les Presses Du Reel | 2013 | 9788867490127 | English Acqn 23101 | Pb | 13x19cm | 96pp | £25 At once an adroit art historical study and a poetic travelogue, this literary tribute to British artist Sarah Lucas, comprises American poet and critic Quinn Latimer’s strange, elliptical account of an exhibition by the artist that Latimer has never seen, created and installed in a city she had not yet visited.

ART

Katja Davar - Crystal Networks. In a nonchalant coexistence of different styles, visual traditions and references, she combines technical figures, switchboards and user interfaces with organic forms condensing them into seemingly unreal spatial configurations.

In this catalogue he takes up historical references relating to the Secession and the zeitgeist in Vienna at the start of the 20th century as a whole.

Guido van der Werve - At War With Oneself. Secession Revolver Publishing by VVV | 2014 | 9783868953121 | English & German | Acqn 23441 | Hb | 26x23cm | 276pp | £29.95 As the protagonist of his own films, Dutch video and performance artist Guido van der Werve makes great physical demands upon himself. His works chart approaches to the experience of self and the world by staging an existentialist competition with himself.

Sarah Lucas - NOB. Secession Revolver Publishing by VVV | 2014 | 9783868953107 | English & German | Acqn 23442 | Pb | 17x22cm | 156pp | £17 Simultaneously undermining sexual stereotypes with the outspoken directness of the sexual innuendo characteristic of her works, Lucas always expresses deep scepticism towards social norms and the gender-specific attribution of roles, albeit with an enigmatic sense of humour.

And/Or. On The Contradiction In The Work Of Jan van Toorn nai010 publishers | 2013 | 9789462081116 English | Acqn 23219 | Pb | 17x23cm 88pp | 58 ills | £21

Along with Wim Crouwel, Karel Martens and Walter Nikkels, Jan van Toorn belongs to the generation of designers who determined the look of Dutch graphic design in the 1970s and 80s. His socially engaged practice is founded on a notion of communication based on democratic reciprocity and solidarity with the public. In contrast to prevailing forms of visual communication, Van Toorn’s visual journalism establishes meaning in dialogue with the viewer and reader. In this book, design publicist Els Kuijpers gives insight into Van Toorn’s methodology.
