FRUITMARKET GALLERY / FOUR CORNERS BOOKS

Gabriel Orozco - Thinking in Circles Fruitmarket Gallery | 2013 | 9781908612236 English | Acqn 22699 | Hb | 21x26cm 148pp | 120 ills | ÂŁ24.95

Published by The Fruitmarket Gallery to accompany their exhibition, this major book by curator Briony Fer focuses on the themes and ideas in the show - placing the work, The Eye of Go, at the centre of her thought Fer asks how far it is possible to think with the work rather than about it. Fully illustrated with many images published here for the first time and new photography made by the artist specially for the book, this is an important addition to current scholarship on Orozco’s work.

The Graphic World of Paul Peter Piech Four Corners Books | 2013 | 9781909829015 | English Acqn 22700 | Hb | 22x31cm | 192pp | 150 ills | £20 Born in New York, Paul Peter Piech (1920-1996) worked for most of his life as a printmaker in the UK, producing prints, posters and books from his home in the London commuter belt and, later, Wales. Piech’s works, sometimes joyful, sometimes angry, always inventive, tackle the political concerns of the late 20th century, combining the artist’s advertising expertise with his forthright personal beliefs.

Pirate Nightmare Vice Explosion Edited and introduced by Michael Kupperman Four Corners Books | 2013 | 9780956192875 | English Acqn 22701 | Pb | 24x32cm | 144pp | £15.99 In the late 1990s, Michael Kupperman bought a stack of men’s magazines from the 1950s and 1960s. On examining them, he discovered that their original owner had tampered with them, using the contents to form his own hybrid magazines. Pirate Nightmare Vice Explosion presents highlights from that collection, and takes place in a murky, monochromatic world where mysterious, energetic sin is always happening behind closed doors.

PROGETTO PRADA ARTE, VALIZ

When Attitudes Become Form Bern 1969/Venice 2013 Progetto Prada Arte | 2013 | 9788887029550 | English Acqn 22488 | Hb | 22x29cm | 728pp | 516 ills | £77 To present today an exhibition from 1969 just as it was, maintaining its original visual and formal relations and links between the works, has posed a series of questions on the complexity and very meaning of the project. Underlining and highlighting the transition from the past to the present, the complex identity of which it is important to conserve, it has been decided to graft the exhibition in its totality walls, floors, installations and art objects, including their relative positions - onto the historical architectural and environmental structure of Ca’ Corner della Regina, thereby inserting, on a full-size scale, the modern rooms of the Kunsthalle, delimited by white wall surfaces, into the ancient frescoed and decorated halls of the Venetian palazzo.

Whispers: Ulay on Ulay Valiz | 2013 | 9789078088721 | English | Acqn 22748 Pb | 17x24cm | 528pp | 1100 ills | £26 A pioneer of Polaroid photography and one of the pivotal figures of European performance art of the 70’s and 80’s, Uwe Frank Laysiepen (Solingen, 1943), better known in the art world as Ulay, is a singular presence among the artists of his generation. At the age of almost 70, as his radically innovative past work in partnership with Marina Abramovic has reached the highest degrees of critical acclaim worldwide, Ulay finally reveals his best kept secrets: a startling oeuvre, coherently rooted in a personal life philosophy guided by strong ethical principles. 4

Willem Sandberg - Portrait Of An Artist Valiz | 2013 | 9789078088738 | English | Acqn 22662 | Pb 15x21cm | 328pp | 20 ills | £16.95 The first English edition of the inspirational ‘art and museum classic.’ Containing interviews with Sandberg (1897-1994), the director of the Stedelijk Museum (1945-1962). The book gives insight into questions of museum policy, art in society, art criticism, the role of the artist, and the function of architecture.

Participation is Risky - Approaches to Joint Creative Processes Valiz | 2013 | 9789078088776 | English | Acqn 22751 Pb | 14x21cm | 300pp | 30 ills | £16.95 Makers who engage in participative practices must take the risk of abandoning their traditional roles. This new title in the Antennae series shows that interesting participative practices, methods and results are typically characterized by the ‘risky’ confrontation of the differences between disciplines and perspectives.

Dread: The Dizziness of Freedom Valiz | 2013 | 9789078088813 | English | Acqn 22750 Pb | 14x21cm | 240pp | 50 ills | £16.95 Constantly changing technology and growing communication networks give mankind ever more choices and options. However, every technological innovation has its counterpart: the military, administrative, existential crash; catastrophe looms. This imminent, hard to interpret threat evokes feelings of ‘dread.’

Triple Bound - Essays on Art, Architecture and the Museum Valiz | 2013 | 9789078088493 | English | Acqn 19531 Pb | 14x21cm | 240pp | £16.95 Museum architecture is deployed in a variety of different ways: as an autonomous icon, as a flexible ‘shed’, as a PR instrument, as a memory machine, as a stimulus to urban renewal, as a landscape theme, as a political trump card, as a storage depot for artefacts, etc. Includes case studies from Stedelijk Museum and Tate Modern amongst others. 5

Hans Ulrich Obrist - Sharp Tongues, Loose Lips, Open Eyes, Ears to the Ground Sternberg Press | 2013 | 9783943365955 | English Acqn 22678 | Pb | 13x20cm | 172pp | £10.50 Following ‘Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Curating But Were Afraid to Ask,’ this second volume in the series on international curator Hans Ulrich Obrist presents a selection of his key writings from the past two decades, which elaborate on the manifold thinkers, curators, and events that influence his interdisciplinary practice of exhibition making. The collected essays form the compartments of Obrist’s curatorial toolbox, along with elucidating his views on stewardship, patronage, and art itself. Influences and interlocutors cited and discussed here include, among others, Alexander Dorner, Edouard Glissant, Claude Levi-Strauss, Jean-Francois Lyotard, Dominique de Menil, Josef Ortner, Cedric Price, Sir John Soane and Harald Szeeman.

Brian Dillon - Objects in This Mirror Sternberg Press | 2013 | 9781934105795 | English Acqn 22676 | Pb | 12x19cm | 250pp | 25 ills | £16.50 Objects in This Mirror posits a polemical defense of intellectual and cultural generalism and curiosity. The collection of essays rewardingly navigates such diverse subjects as the writings of W. G. Sebald and Roland Barthes to the history of cravat-tying manuals and the search for a cure to the common cold. The book includes essays on the history of library classification systems, art vandalism, the meaning of slapstick, and repetition in art and philosophy. Staying true to the idea of the essay as a self-aware but generous literary and critical form, Objects in This Mirror explores the variety of topics it has been possible in recent years to corral within the rubric of art writing or criticism.

Open Form Film, Space, Interaction, and the Tradition of Oskar Hansen Sternberg Press | 2013 | 9783943365986 | English Acqn 22682 | Pb | 15x20cm | 160pp | £16.50 Oskar Hansen’s (1922–2005) theoretical concept of ‘open form’ was developed in the context of international debates around late-modern architecture in the 1950s. Open form assumed that no artistic expression is complete until it has been appropriated by its users or beholders and informed key principles of performance and film art.

The Whole Earth - California And The Disappearance Of The Outside Sternberg Press | 2013 | 9783943365641 | English Acqn 22655 | Pb | 26x35cm | 208pp | 350 ills £22.50 The exhibition ‘The Whole Earth’ is an essay composed of culturalhistorical materials and artistic positions that critically address the rise of the image of ‘One Earth’ and the ecological paradigm associated with it. These are surrounded by critical essays that shed light onto 1960s California and the networked culture that emerged from it.

Schaubilder Sternberg Press | 2013 | 9783943365733 | English & German Acqn 22492 | Pb | 16x23cm | 128pp | 105 ills | £17.50 In recent years, it has been possible to discern a growing interest in diagrams. The exhibition ‘Schaubilder’ (Diagrams) explores how these developments affect the worlds of images in contemporary art. In addition essays from the perspectives of art theory, philosophy, and information design encourage an ongoing discussion of the theme.

Anton Vidokle & Hu Fang Two Suns (DVD) Sternberg Press | 2013 | 9781934105948 | English Acqn 22686 | DVD | £15.60 Two Suns is set in an abandoned concrete house in the Taiwanese countryside as the building is slowly clad in mirrors, gradually vanishing from sight - it becomes a mirror, or rather, an image, of the surrounding environment. Simultaneously Anton Vidokle’s subtitled text tells the story of his visit to the iconic Schroder-House in Utrecht. 9

Bulletins of The Serving Library #5 Sternberg Press | 2013 | 9783943365856 | English | Acqn 22719 | Pb | 17x24cm | 200pp | £13 Conceived in residency at the library of the Goethe-Institut New York, this issue of Bulletins of The Serving Library used the context of the hosting institution as a thematic starting point. Contemplating this themeasbothforeignersandGermancitizens, manyofthecontributors present theses that reach deep into the realm of the personal.

Visual Cultures as Objects and Affects Jorella Andrews, Simon O’Sullivan Sternberg Press | 2013 | 9783943365382 | English | Acqn 22687 | Pb | 15x20cm | 88pp | £10.50 Largely due to the ‘linguistic turn’ that has dominated the humanities since the mid-20th century, many contemporary scholars and artists have, for too long, equated works of art with highly coded texts to be interpreted. Jorella Andrews and Simon O’Sullivan pay attention to the asignifying character of art, or simply its affective qualities.

Visual Cultures as Seriousness Gavid Butt, Irit Rogoff Sternberg Press | 2013 | 9783943365399 | English Acqn 22689 | Pb | 15x20cm | £10.50 Can certain art forms - such as performance art - suggest ways in which we might be intelligent without being serious? And can one be serious in the art world without returning to established assumptions about the high-mindedness of the public intellectual?

Visual Cultures as Recollection Astrid Schmetterling, Lynn Turner Sternberg Press | 2013 | 9783943365405 | English Acqn 22688 | Pb | 15x20cm | 88pp | 2 ills | £10.50 The preservation of memory through reenactment; the desire to conserve and reactivate physical traces of the lost or departed; conscious and unconscious remembering; trauma, melancholia. All of these concerns are central to the making, viewing, collection, and interpretation of art, especially now, when the technologies of reproduction proliferate as never before. 10

Living Labor Sternberg Press | 2013 | 9783943365672 | English Acqn 22628 | Pb | 15x22cm | 216pp | 64 ills | £12.95 Living Labor considers the increasing subordination of life to work. Despite economic instability and growing income gaps our commitment to productivity is unflagging. Today, work enlists us to psychologically invest ourselves in a boundaryless work life, which seeks to instrumentalize all of our waking hours.

The Archive as a Productive Space of Conflict Sternberg Press | 2013 | 9781934105863 | English Acqn 22674 | Pb | 15x22cm | 500pp | 300 ills | £22.50 This applied research project and publication deals with archival practice and its spatial repercussions. Do archives need to be exposed to spatial permanence, and, if so, what design framework has to be applied in order for their components to be able to take on more than a singular form of existence.

The Human Snapshot Sternberg Press | 2013 | 9783943365634 | English | Acqn 22497 | Hb | 19x27cm | 320pp | 166 ills | £30 Examining contemporary forms of humanism and universalism as they circulate and are produced in art and photography the Human Snapshot takes these themes and wrestles with their application. Under conceptual assault these values continue to proliferate - even through the visual arts, where they are customarily dismissed.

Undoing Property? Sternberg Press | 2013 | 9783943365689 | English Acqn 22656 | Hb | 17x24cm | 256pp | 40 ills | £19.50 Undoing Property? examines complex relationships inside art, culture, political economy, immaterial production, and the public realm today. In its pages artists and theorists address aspects of computing, curating, economy, ecology, gentrification, music, publishing, piracy, and much more. 11

Scandalous - A Reader on Art and Ethics Sternberg Press | 2013 | 9781934105870 | English Acqn 22684 | Pb | 17x23cm | 178pp | 22 ills | £16.50 Recent encounters between art and ‘real life,’ images of violence and humiliation in visual culture, and controversial debates on public art projects are raising fundamental questions about the importance of ethical decisions in art and curating. How far can provocation in art go, before it becomes cynical and abusive?

Monday Begins on Saturday: Bergen Assembly 2013 Sternberg Press | 2013 | 9783943365740 | English Acqn 22680 | Pb | 18x24cm | 320pp | 100 ills | £30.50 This critical meditation on the notion of ‘artistic research’ takes its title from a novel by Soviet sci-fi writers Arkady and Boris Strugatsky about a fictitious research institute staffed by a motley assemblage of fairytale beings and mad scientists who are trying to solve the problem of human happiness through magic.

Donatien Grau - The Age Of Creation Sternberg Press | 2013 | 9783943365337 | English Acqn 22493 | Pb | 11x17cm | 130pp | £12.95 Since so much art now considers itself as cultural production, mystical creation has been turned into a minority paradigm. Creation does not intend to embrace culture, but actually to address it and engage in a conversation between the world and its participants. As such, it paves the way for a perpetual reinvention of human life.

Chantal Pontbriand - The Contemporary, the Common: Art in a Globalizing World Sternberg Press | 2013 | 9783943365481 | English Acqn 22683 | Pb | 16x22cm | 432pp | £20.95 The essays in this collection were written in the first decade of the new millennium by the critic, editor, and curator Chantal Pontbriand. Pontbriand examines themes of being-in-common through globalization, work, war, and other social phenomena, as well as their relation to the development of art practices. 12

Solution 247 - 261 - Love Sternberg Press | 2013 | 9783943365788 | English Acqn 22657 | Pb | 11x18cm | 188pp | 18 ills | £13.50 The Solution series departs from its previous geopolitical focus. Solution 247-261: Love realizes that the past, present, and future of love is a demanding mix of charity, sex, trust, lust, economics, genetics, and cybernetics. This volume explores varying ideas of the body and the self, as a spirited micro-region with borders that cannot hold.

Sven Lutticken - History in Motion: Time in the Age of the Moving Image Sternberg Press | 2013 | 9783943365894 | English Acqn 22679 | Pb | 14x13cm | 312pp | 82 ills | £16.50 Analyzing a variety of films, video pieces, and performances, Sven Lutticken evaluates the impact that our changing experience of time has had on the actualization of history in the present. In the process, he considers the role of shock and suspense, of play and games and a new “natural history” marked by climate change.

Neomaterialism Sternberg Press | 2013 | 9783943365085 | English Acqn 22491 | Pb | 12x20cm | 194pp | 14 ills | £13.95 Since the dematerialization of currencies and art practices in the late 1960s and early 1970, we have witnessed a move into what Joshua Simon calls an economy of neomaterialism. The focus of labor has moved from production to consumption, the commodity has become the historical subject, and symbols now behave like materials.

French Theory in American Art Sternberg Press | 2013 | 9783943365375 | English Acqn 22677 | Pb | 15x23cm | 384pp | 69 ills | £21.95 First and foremost, French Theory and American Art examines some of the main historical conditions of the reception of French Theory in American Art, considering significant texts, artists, authors, and events that were instrumental in the introduction of French thought into the artistic field of the United States. 13

Film narratives are reconsidered along gender lines - what if the Godfather was a woman, or Almodovar’s Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown were men?

Alfred Ehrhardt - Das Watt Editions Xavier Barral | 2013 | 9782365110266 English & French | Acqn 22758 | Hb 23x30cm | 96pp | ÂŁ48

After studying at the renowned Bauhaus in Dessau Alfred Ehrhardt taught there between 1928 and 1933, alongside scenographer Oskar Schlemmer and painters Josef Albers and Wassily Kandinsky with whom he became friends. Accused of Bolshevism in 1933 by the National Socialist regime, he was forced to leave the establishment. During a stay on the shores of the North Sea in 1934 he produced his first photographic report and then followed a series of images taken on the Curonian Spit. In 1936 Alfred Ehrhardt published Das Watt, his photographs show the space left by the sea at low tide, the sand tracing deep, shallow, sinuous lines and grooves in complex designs. The photographer’s lens presents the austere beauty of these abstract variations. Today the mysterious and evocative power of these images remains and through them we cannot help but imagine the geology of distant planets.

Author Steven Jacobs examines the “master of suspense’s” architecture and the myriad of interpretations and issues that it raises, and in addition also discusses at length a series of domestic buildings with the help of reconstructed floor plans. Now available as a reprint of the first edition.

However, there remains confusion about what ‘green’ means for design, architecture and urbanism. Green is fashionable, but its design potentials remain unexplored. This book questions what is currently labelled as ‘green’ and, in conjunction with various experts, elaborates upon how it ought to be defined. It challenges architectural conventions and looks into the wide range of possibilities for new green architecture. Now available as a reprint of the first edition.
