Using the Space Time to make something in the art department

Mini BOArD DriVe-in MAgic if you listened to the audio version of issue 83 vol 12, then you might have caught how Betty suddenly needed a cardboard box turned into a car. it hadn’t made the to-do list when i was writing that issue because i didn’t know it yet. Luckily, we have a lot of boxes around here. she picked the smallest one she could fit inside to turn it into a unicorn. i wrapped it in white paper, drew some outlines, and then she painted it herself. i hope i can get away with more school projects like that. —MV

While he might be very proud of his “Person i care the Most about,” i thought his collage for “My Favorite Move” was really strong. i wish my art was that effortlessly dynamic. —MV

While you might have seen a million memes of shakira and J. Lo in gold and silver at the end of their half time performance, shakira started in rubies. “The entire look, designed by Peter Dundas, featured 123,000 swarovski crystals,” according to Usa Today. That’s not what everyone was talking about. shakira looked like her character from Zootopia (2016). “This is why i have a twitter account and continue to be a forever stan of @shakira!!!!!!!,” Brie Larson tweeted. The movie is about defeating politicians who turn the population against each other. gazelle champions harmony in diversity. —MV

t&A in B.O.p. acclaimed writer gail simone currently has polls up to survey how people feel about tits and ass, but mostly an ongoing dialogue with comic fans who want to talk about women’s bodies. simone tweets how deeply invested she is in the characters she writes and how she knew going into the Birds of Prey movie that she needed to treat this version like they are all at the beginning of the journey to figuring out who they all are—they have

experienced none of the history she and other writers created for them throughout the series. But the same way “fans” cried captain Marvel didn’t have enough sex appeal, they are angry about BoP. i say they should stay home with simone’s Red Sonja then. —MV

thinking cap trying them on before deciding which ones to keep by Madeline Vega There is never a shortage of hats at casa vega. They come

from everywhere in all colors and styles—H&M faux fashion, church sales, political movements... I messed up and donated a bag of the kids’ hats that might have been too small and definitely hadn’t been worn recently enough before I made the time to do this shoot. But then again, this shoot couldn’t happen until I cleared a space to have a shoot (see Issue 83). So we worked with the myriad of options that were left—my old hats, Luis’ winter hats, a fancy one Meg left behind, a couple Boom classics, and zebra stripes from a friend. In the end, we still have this set of hats...

Flowers will always be more in demand for Mother’s Day, but Madeline wanted a behind the scenes look for this issue before it’s a bouquet

stocking up for Valentine’s day

by Madeline Vega

Global Wholesale Flowers has been on McDonald Ave. in Brooklyn since 2014, but when I heard my friend was working longer hours leading up to this Valentine’s Day, I was curious what that looked like. It’s easy enough to find a video of someone arranging flowers, but what about before that—the shopping? And, on the flip side, managing the inventory so one florist doesn’t make off with all the red roses. I had fun as a fly on the wall.

Sunday versus Monday

A pallet jack waits outside the refrigerator with clear floors on Monday, less than 20 hours after the picture of the stacks on the right. Sunday’s customers took away what’s missing between the two pictures.

refrigerated

Fresh red roses outside the box in which they originally shipped. The whole store was hovering in the low 50s, slightly warmer than outside temperatures.
