Sketching a Plan
Sketching a Plan
Inspired to draw more often, Luis walks us through what he created in 2019 and what he plans to accomplish this year
I’m always incredibly inspired by the quick sketches artists do at New York Comic Con. This year, I decided I would do 5-minute sketches at my desk every day. I came out of the box very strong with one week devoted to Into The Spider-Verse, and another devoted to Batman villains. Since then, the results have been slightly more sporadic. Between the holidays and me being more critical of my art (which defeats the entire practice of quick sketches), I haven’t finished a full week since. At the peak of me feeling bad about my artwork, I came home and realized my wife had not only carved out a new work space for me, but also hung up some of my art. It was a great kick in the ass to realize I should stop criticizing myself. As we start 2020, I have relatively lofty goals for my art. I would love to produce 20 large pieces and 120 quick sketches.
WWE Superstar Liv Morgan was my most liked and retweeted illustration of the year. My personal favorites are my take on Tyrion (Game of Thrones) and Enfys Nest (Solo). All are 11x17 comic art board with Micron pens with Pentel brush inks.
