KEYWORDS Medium: It is the material used to create an artwork, such as oils, acrylic, clay, metal, and wood. Tone: Tone is the lightness or darkness of a color. Artists use color tones in order to create visual effects and show or hide objects. It is also referred to as chiaroscuro and it is very important when it comes to drawing a realistic portrait! In the early 16th century, Leonardo da Vinci used different tones to create beautiful sketches. Cubism: An Artistic style which focuses on the twodimensional and flat surfaces rather than imitating the natural world. The movement was created by Pablo Picasso and Paul CĂŠzanne in Paris during the 20th Century. Surreal Art: Artwork inspired by dreams and the subconscious. Salvador Dali and Frida Kahlo are famous for their surreal artwork!

FUN FACTS • Eggs were used by medieval and early modern artists to create paint! This kind of technique is called Tempera. • Squid ink was extracted and used as black ink to write and draw with, as well the carbonizing and binding of cow-bones! • Before the 18th century, the color purple was considered very precious that it was reserved only for the ruling family. It was extracted from a special kind of rare sea snail. • Did you know you can create pink dye by simply boiling clean avocado skins and their pits?
