Letter from the Board Chair and President Dear Friends, What a year 2018 was as we worked together to build appreciation, participation and support for the arts and arts education throughout the St. Louis community. We launched new programs like the Katherine Dunham Fellowship for AfricanAmerican students interested in arts administration and Catalyst Conversations, a series of casual discussions in our new Catalyst Innovation Lab; We established a new partnership with the St. Louis Suburban Music Educators Association to keep art happening for area music students through competitions and concerts; We welcomed four new tenants to our Centene Center for the Arts incubator to grow their programs and impact in our community; We selected two winners of the stARTup Creative Competition, one of only two programs of its kind in the nation, that could change the fabric of St. Louis through the arts;

The Centene Center for the Arts is an incubator owned and operated by the Arts and Education Council that provides arts organizations access, collaboration and essential infrastructure so that they — and the communities they serve — can thrive. From the heart of the Grand Center Arts District, tenants have access to rehearsal and performance space, offices, community and collaborative spaces, infrastructure and technology — all for free or at affordable, below-market prices. the Art Education Fund, the Arts and Education Council also continued support for Royce Martin’s paid internship with Open Studio Network, where Martin learned performance, composition and transcription. Martin completed his internship in summer 2018 before beginning his freshman year at Berklee College of Music, one of the country’s most prestigious music conservatories.

The Katherine Dunham Fellowship
promotes
diversity in arts leadership by offering a paid semester-long opportunity to African-American undergraduate and graduate students and recent graduates interested in arts administration. 2018 fellows were Quinton Ward and Allena Brazier. Following his spring fellowship, Ward graduated from Webster University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in graphic design and is currently working with the Saint Louis Zoo on communitybased research related to the North County expansion. Brazier hopes to open her own community space and art

Education Council and PNC Foundation, identifies arts entrepreneurs with innovative ideas for the St. Louis arts community and provides the resources they need to further develop those ideas. 2018 competition winners were The Makers Program, which provides Black and Latino artists with resources and guidance to empower themselves through building scalable product-based businesses, and Who Raised You? Listening Collective, which equips citizen sound agents to record stories about culture, family and intersecting identities through podcasting workshops, educational collaborations, speaking events, live shows and more. Competition winners receive $10,000 in prize money, a year of free incubation space in the Arts and Education Council’s Centene Center for the Arts and access to professional development and mentorship opportunities.

In 2018, 73 organizations were supported through funding programs including Operating Support, PNC Program Grants, the Maritz Arts and Education Fund for Teachers, the Monsanto Fund Rural Community Arts Education Program, the Monsanto Creative Impact Fund and incubation support in the Centene Center for the Arts.
