Welcome to BELGIUM There’s something about Belgium! Maybe it are the modest and welcoming people who, with three official languages, find it easy to converse in English. Maybe it’s the stunning architecture of the medieval cobblestone squares or the modern public buildings. Or perhaps it’s the incredible cuisine found in the vast array of restaurants where each meal seems better than the last. Well situated between France, Germany and the Netherlands, Belgium encompasses all the best that Europe has to offer in an area no bigger than 32,000 km². Romantic sceneries, waffles and chocolate, music festivals, castles, churches, museums … all waiting to be discovered. Often called the ‘Essence of Europe’, Belgium is both multicultural and multilingual. Flanders in the north, proud of its medieval art cities Antwerp, Bruges and Ghent. Wallonia in the south, with its rolling hills of the Ardennes, countless castles, and the cities of Liege, Namur and Tournai. The capital Brussels is one of the world’s great cosmopolitan cities, home to both the European Union and NATO, as well as multiple international trade and finance companies. Two out of three citizens of the European Union live within a radius of 350 km around Brussels. Belgium’s history has always been linked to both commercial and cultural exchange, and much of its character is due to its role as the great meeting place of Western Europe. Traces of the Austrians, Spanish, French and Dutch can still be seen in its architecture and in the lifestyle of its people.

4

Belgium has three official languages: Dutch, French and German. The Dutch-speaking part is situated in the northern part: Flanders. French is spoken in the southern part, Wallonia, and to a large extent in Brussels as well. The very small German-speaking community is located on the eastern border of Belgium.

Like most of northwestern Europe, Belgium has a maritime climate, with significant precipitation in all seasons. The average temperature is 3 °C in January and 18 °C in July, although temperatures vary between 10 °C and 35 °C in summer and -15 °C and 15 °C in winter. Rainwear, warm clothes and an umbrella will be needed, but not all of the time! www.belgium.be www.highereducation.be 5

Welcome to Flanders! Flanders has an area of 13,522 km² and is situated in the northern region of Belgium. This Dutch-speaking part of Belgium hosts about 6 million inhabitants. The compact road, waterway and railway network, four sea ports and different airports, including the national airport in Brussels (www.brusselsairport.be) make Flanders the ideal gateway to Europe. That is why many multinationals have chosen Flanders as the base for their operations on the European market.

Welcome to Ghent!

In a nutshell, Ghent has something on offer for each and every visitor!

Ghent is situated in Flanders and is only 30 minutes away from Brussels, Antwerp, Bruges, the coast, France and Holland. With its 70,000 students, Ghent is the largest student city in Belgium. The university and university colleges’ campuses are spread across the city, which enlivens the atmosphere. It is impossible to imagine Ghent without its students cycling. With its university and four university colleges, Ghent is able to offer a wide range of study opportunities. Ghent has it all: living, nightlife, first-class education and many leisure activities. The language spoken in Ghent is Dutch, the language of twenty million Dutch and Flemish people. Ghent boasts a unique mixture of architecture and contemporary events, museums of international repute, impressive gastronomic choice, and spectacular good nightlife. It has an agreeable charming inner city where cosy corners alternate with pleasant and busy shopping streets. Ghent combines medieval grandeur and modern consciousness in a natural and above all, modest way. Moreover, the city is a cultural attraction with its important music and film festivals, as well as its varied theatre and performance scene. For every traditional theatre, there are five small, independent venues and for each commercial cinema complex, there are two art house cinemas. The music scene is alive and original, with many international bands playing in Ghent and at the Belgian festivals, all year round.

our international semester programmes

Artevelde University College offers a range of English taught semester programmes in the fields of social work, education, business management, health care and communication management. Each programme excels because of its specific focus and its mixture of both international and Flemish students providing an interesting intercultural exchange. If your home university is a partner of Artevelde University College you can apply as an exchange student for one of our international exchange programmes. If this is not the case, different admission requirements will apply. Our university college has acquired the Erasmus Charter for Higher Education for the full duration of the new Erasmus+ Programme (2014-2020). The Erasmus Charter for Higher Education (ECHE) provides the general quality framework for European and international cooperation activities a higher education institution may carry out within the programme. The award of an Erasmus Charter for Higher Education is a pre-requisite for all higher education institutions located in an eligible country and willing to participate in learning mobility of individuals and/or cooperation for innovation and good practices under the Programme. The Charter is awarded for the full duration of the Programme.

Healthcare Studies Increasing globalisation and the expansion of the European Union with greater freedom of movement means that healthcare professionals will increasingly be working with colleagues and clients/patients from other countries and cultures.

Healthcare studies offers a unique opportunity to meet students and staff from different countries, cultures and professional backgrounds to discuss and debate issues concerning the present and future role of healthcare workers. We focus on inter-disciplinarity and give exchange students the opportunity to extend their social and international network right from the start.

‘Healthcare Studies’ is modularbased. This facilitates students to opt for a programme, consisting of a compulsory versus an optional, an interprofessional versus a professional and a common part versus a tailormade part, based on professional interests. Healthcare Studies is developed for students of Occupational Therapy, Nursing, Midwifery, Speech and Language Therapy, Podiatry and Audiology.

WHY? The saying goes that the world fits in the palm of your hand. Developments in communication, IT, marketing … flash before our eyes at a never-seen-before rapid pace. Suddenly it has become true that the United States, China or India are just a mouse click away. Employees with an internationally oriented mindset are very much wanted by employers: they have learned to be flexible, they can easily deal with change, they got to know other cultures and habits… They often possess excellent language skills. In an internationally oriented environment (all classes are taught in English), Belgian and international guest lecturers will be your guides and introduce you into the world of accounting, management, law, finance, marketing etc. You learn to develop a strong, indepth and international view in order to start

building an international career. Combine this with international cases, study trips abroad… and you will see: the world lies at your feet! In your second year, an international study trip can be part of your curriculum. You can study abroad AND do your internship abroad during the third year. All our lecturers have acquired the Certificate in Advanced English (CAE).

Research and development Multidisciplinary research centers The research and development policy of the Artevelde University College (AUC) relies on four main focus areas. Multidisciplinary research centers (MRCs) unite researchers and teachers and translate focus area subjects into multidisciplinary research projects.

Research at Artevelde University College Every year researchers, students and external partners collaborate in practice-based research projects (PBRP). These projects elaborate on actual themes and develop practice-based applications and tools. Societal implementation and impact is essential in these research projects. Next to practice-based research activities we are also involved in contract research for stakeholders, authorities and third parties and in national and international consortia and networks. The developed expertise is used in the field and in society at large by organising training activities, coaching and guidance, tuition, consultancy and research tailored to the needs of external partners. High-quality research and development aimed at innovation and professionalisation of practice are our trademark.

Making science attractive Another aspect of our mission is to introduce research and science to the general public. By means of our extensive activities in science communication we reach children, adolescents and adults and introduce them to various domains in science and engineering. Feel free to contact od@arteveldehs.be for more information. www.arteveldeuniversitycollege.be > research 26

Strategic Alliances Artevelde University College Ghent enjoys an extensive network of international contacts spread over 6 continents. These partnerships (universities, university colleges, NGOs...) were all consciously chosen for their added value in mobility but also in other domains such as professionalisation, social services and education. Out of the network of institutions in countries that are not part of the European Union, the Artevelde University College opted for a strategic collaboration with five partner countries, i.e. the ‘strategic alliances’: Ecuador, Canada, China, South Africa and Vietnam (and by extension Suriname and Cambodia). The choice for these countries stemmed from previous collaborations. Ecuador, Suriname, South Africa and Vietnam also belong to the partner countries of the Belgian Development Cooperation and the Flemish Interuniversity Development Cooperation (VLIR UOS).

Artevelde University College can rely on an extensive and stable network of training organisations and higher education institutions for the organisation of mobility and the participation in projects. In some of the strategic alliances such as Ecuador, Suriname and Cambodia, a close working relationship exists with NGOs working at a government level to improve education. Through its training and services, Artevelde University College shares its expertise where necessary and requested, which with time contributes to a structural cooperation. The strategic alliances are an institution-wide initiative, in the sense that each alliance is represented by a ‘strategic agent’ who follows the contacts with the institutions and who is also the contact person for the different departments, interested in expanding their cooperation. www.arteveldeuniversitycollege.be
