The power of collectives

Various collectives have emerged and graduated from the School of Acting, from DIEHELEDING to Blond & Cynisch. During their studies, students from these collectives discovered they had the same interests and enjoyed working together. That’s why they joined forces to create together, as a group. Which turned out to be very valuable and enriching for their artistic research and creative process.

Philosophy of the World by Blond & Cynisch

Emma Vermeulen, Remy Meeuwsen and Esther Ymkje van Steenis graduated as a collective named Blond & Cynisch (Blonde & Cynical). They shined with their own performance: Philosophy of the World. “When we decided to graduate as a collective, it soon became clear we wanted to write the performance ourselves”, says a beaming Esther.

“It’s great to write your own piece. We never did it before. We had already edited and adapted certain pieces, but this performance was written entirely by us. We explore the boundaries of theatrical conventions. That’s an exciting process. And we also perform ourselves!”

Emma: “I already had a great love for performing and it only developed further at school.”

Acting as a profession

Emma looks back. “When I started highschool, I didn’t really see acting as a job to have. But when I followed the preparatory course Noorderlingen in Groningen, it turned out to be possible. There I met people who took the profession seriously, and who considered going to a school of acting as a serious option. For me acting was the most fun thing to do, and the thought of doing it for the rest of my life just seemed great to me.”
