Room for art, room for research

Artwork is often preceded by research: the material, the story, the context, the form. Sometimes the investigative process is already a form of art, or the artwork a form of research. The overlap of art and research is called ‘artistic research’ and comes in many forms. To show the scope of all forms, expressions and views of artistic research, ArtEZ has set up a digital platform especially for and about artistic research: APRIA. The founders of this stimulating platform look back, and into the future of artistic research.

Artistic research in all shapes and sizes

APRIA (ArtEZ Platform for Research Interventions of the Arts) is a peer-reviewed online platform for artistic research, set up in collaboration between ArtEZ Press and Studium Generale. The broad scope of the multidisciplinary platform is reflected in the different shapes and forms of the contributions, and the variety of contributors - students, but also lecturers and artistic researchers from inside and outside ArtEZ. Minke Vos, editor of ArtEZ Press and co-founder of APRIA: “The research can be presented in all kinds of ways: a text, a video, a podcast. All contributors and forms of contribution are welcome.”

Both traditional and experimental

“We want to show that artistic research can take many forms”, says Joke Alkema, head of Studium Generale and co-founder.

There is no single definition for artistic research. Every artist goes through a research process, traditional or experimental. That’s why APRIA was founded, to demonstrate that scope. To communicate that everyone can do research: from bachelor’s and master’s students to professors.

Minke adds: “Research takes place in each discipline we teach at ArtEZ, from dance and music to fine art.”

Artistic research at ArtEZ

Whether you are a student, teacher, or art lover: there are plenty of (online) places for you at ArtEZ if you crave depth, art and social engagement. APRIA is one of those (digital) places. But there is more. ArtEZ Studium Generale organises meetings, lectures, trainings, podcasts, online classes and publications about art, science and society and today’s questions. Join, meet or organise! Activities are open to everyone. And ArtEZ Press, the publishing house of ArtEZ, has published over 90 titles which you can buy in their webshop.
