N AT U R E SPEAKS TO US IN A MODEST SILENCE

‘Everyday life in t h e We s t e r n w o r l d i s over flowing with stimuli. In my photos I try to capture the simplicity and tranquility of natural environments I want to tease and stimulate more than just the sense of sight and show what I sensed when I made the ar twork; the light, the temperature, the atmosphere… sometimes even the scent of a damp autumn forest and the cold of the whirling salty breath of a storm on the beach of the N o r t h S e a .’

Since 2014, after quitting a demanding corporate job the ar tist has focussed on simple, natural and sustainable living. The special (nordic) light and colours in the Jutland coastal area inspired him to develop this style. ‘I see the nature around me changing due to the changes in the climate. I sometimes feel an urge to record how I see the landscapes now before they disappear. I think: that will not come back; those swamps that are dr ying up, the wide beaches and dunes along the North Sea, the forests with trees that only thrive in a cooler climate, those polders and fjords at the current sea level’

He became an ar tist whilst still at school, often missing his classes to do art instead. He states ‘I was not born in a family where ar t was well accepted, they are not very cultivated and so t o t h e m I s e e m l i k e a n a l i e n ’. When I star ted to miss all my studies and most of my ar t teachers star ted to hate me, then I felt like I was becoming an ar tist.

I had a multidisciplinary ar tistic education, I studied different styles and ar tistic materials. I was interested in drawings and fashion, adver tising and then painting. When I was twenty I was an abstract and surrealist painter, until 30, when I chose photography as a definitive ar tistic practice in my ar t.

With regard to inspiration, Stephane mentions dreams and the world around him, meeting people and the desire to affect a structural and sociological change. An avid ar t lover himself, he says he d i s c o v e r s f a b u l o u s a r t i s t s e v e r y d a y, a n d lists Jêrome Bosch and the Flemish painters as a universal source of inspiration. NICHOLAS CONLON CH IC AGO, USA P O P A R T , A B S T R A C T , G R A F F I T I , D I G I TA L The enduring impression of Nicholas Conlon is rawness, likely given to him by a turbulent upbringing. He says that what makes him different as an ar tist is his versatility - his creative exploits cover being an actor (his first paid theatre gig involved full frontal nudity), poet, stand-up comedian, designer, filmmaker, political graffitist and ar tist.
