udzu, a persistent and aggressive vine, yields an exquisite purple bloom. When Persistence opens on August 23rd, paintings from the solo exhibition of artist Patty B. Driscoll will show the prickly weed as a metaphor for the resilience of Southern women and the steely grace of their voices. The series of eleven feminist-themed still life oil paintings on wood depict floral arrangements set in chiaroscuro lighting juxtaposing alluring imagery with subversive titles prompting viewers to consider the use of these terms and to reflect upon attitudes towards feminism and femininity in the South and beyond. Incased in Gluck frames inspired by Hannah Gluck in the 1930’s, the various sized works of art pay homage to oft overlooked pioneer women in the arts.

Patty B. Driscoll received her MFA from the California College of Arts after completing her undergraduate work in Studio Art and Art History at Skidmore College. In addition to her formal arts education, Driscoll has studied at the Florence Academy of Art, the Studio Arts Center International in Florence, and the Art Instituto in San Miquel de Allende, Mexico. Patty B. makes her home in Birmingham, Alabama, where she has returned to painting full time in her studio. She is represented by Canary Gallery. I began formal training in the Aerospace industry as a technical illustrator and worked for companies from California to Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama. After graduating from Auburn University, I continued to paint while developing representation at galleries. In 1994 my three brothers and I were juried into Art Expo New York where we met David Leadman and Nancy Marshall of Walls Fine Art Gallery; and with their confidence in my work, they have represented me for over twenty years. “His paintings are the reason we got to know Perry Austin. Consistently solid composition, well seen values and color, all leading to a subtle sense of place that radiates the simple joy of being out in the landscape – something too few of us take time to do. Perry painted for us when we were in North Carolina, and now that we’re in West Virginia, he sees paintings he hasn’t painted, yet, everywhere he turns. That’s a really good thing for us because it means we get to see him more often. Perry teaches workshops here – workshops that teach valuable ins and outs of painting while instilling a heart-felt wonder for the world around us. I suspect the classes are just an excuse, though, to get back here to work on painting some of the last unspoiled family farms, streams, and woodlands for which Perry holds such profound respect. illy Solitario is a New Orleans-based artist and the owner of Billy Solitario Fine Art located on Magazine Street in Uptown New Orleans. The gallery features Billy’s original oil paintings and drawings. Billy has lived nearly his entire life near the Gulf of Mexico, spending his childhood in Gauthier, Mississippi. Growing up in the Gulf South has had a large influence on the style and subject matter of his paintings.
His landscapes find beauty among the sand dunes, coastal savannahs, barrier islands, and cumulus clouds along the Gulf Coast and his still lifes reflect coastal foods such as crab, oysters, and creole tomatoes in a playful scale and with great detail. After obtaining a bachelor’s degree in Fine Art from Auburn University Montgomery in 1987, she worked primarily in the banking industry while pursuing art as an avocation with the hope of eventually becoming a full-time artist. rom masterful paintings on canvas to ornate shell mirrors, Mary Hong has caught worldwide attention of contemporary art enthusiasts. World travel as an 18-year veteran flight attendant, brought her creativity, imagination and inspiration. Workshops and selfteaching allowed her to play with many mediums. Her work has been featured in local, regional and national media outlets both in print and television. Mary earned her undergraduate degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and is a wellestablished, award-winning artist and entrepreneur in Northwest Florida.

aised and educated in South Africa, Clint Eagar found his interest in art at a young age. He attended ABM, the Johannesburg School of Art, where he was able to nurture his interest and skills in perspective drawing, painting, mixed media and sculpture. outh Walton 2017 Artist of the Year, Marisol Gullo, owns and operates Not Too Shabby Boutique in Santa Rosa Beach, Florida along with her husband, Tony. There they specialize in restoring custom furniture and is where Marisol’s passion for art took off. Marisol has taken her life experience and built her own, one of a kind aesthetic and vision. Growing up in Costa Rica, she earned her law degree and became a lawyer. She and Tony met in Costa Rica where they decided to get married and move to the United States shortly thereafter. Tony had vacationed in South Walton as a child and brought Marisol to the Gulf Coast during their honeymoon and she immediately fell in love. They promised each other that they would move to the area one day to start their family and sure enough, within a year they packed up and moved to South Walton in 2001. n Alabama native, Melissa Mercer Brown enjoyed oil painting, drawing, watercolor, pottery, ceramics, crocheting and knitting as early hobbies. Creativity was just something she took for granted but didn’t learn to appreciate or embrace until much later in life. Now she lives on Scenic 30A along the emerald coast of south Walton County Florida where the breathtaking landscape and coastline provide a constant source of inspiration. Her style of painting is often using a lot of texture and translucent layering of washes to capture the changing sea and skies. A board member of the Walton County Cultural Arts Alliance, she believes there are unique talents and gifts in each of us so that we can give back, bless and enrich others. Her theory is grounded in the belief that nature is a reflection from heaven and it’s our job to treasure, appreciate and keep it beautiful. n artist from Alabama, Polli’s first memories as an artist came from her mother’s kitchen as she fervently defended the originality of her drawing to her next-door-neighbor. She was four years old and her neighbor insisted that she had traced the drawing. She heard this story so many times as she grew into her role and thus her calling. She is a graduate from Auburn University with a degree in Design but also attended the Universitat Salzburg in Austria and Heidelberg University in Germany for further art training.

Atlanta was Polli’s home for most of her adult life where she taught art lessons in her home, schools and park systems until she settled in to a new life in Santa Rosa Beach, Florida ten years ago. She believes that God has blessed her with rich experiences and has given her the foundation for so much of what she paints. She paints with a passion and fervency of loss and pain as well as love, happiness, kindness and sacrifice. She left her career as an illustrator in 1986 to move to Florida where she concentrates on her fine art career. Charlotte is an award winning artist who has studied with many master painters in both Portrait and Plein Air Landscape. She is an artist member of the Palette and Chisel Academy of Fine Art. In 2010 she received an honorable mention for her portrait, Dana, in their prestigious Gold Medal Show. She is also a member of the American Impressionist Society. ybil Godwin was born and raised in Charlotte, NC, and has over 14 years of experience in the art world. She attended North Carolina State University, and, upon graduating, moved straight to Atlanta to begin her career in galleries. Every element of nature—landscape design as well as the cyclical progression of skies, lights, and seasons—complements the sculptural creations sited in this new “gallery.”

Designed with the flexibility to accommodate changing displays, the 2+ acre Garden will feature both temporary exhibitions of sculpture by contemporary artists from around the Southeast and the United States as well as a collection of carefully chosen pieces that relate to the Museum’s permanent collection of American art. For the inaugural installation, alongside internationally known artists, the Museum is highlighting the work of eight Alabama sculptors to celebrate Alabama’s bicentennial and demonstrate the depth of creativity found in the state: Adam Bodine, Casey Downing, Jr., Christopher Fennell, Randy Gachet, Joe Minter, Chris Boyd Taylor, and Craig Wedderspoon. Landscape designer, Fairlie Rinehart and architect Jim Barganier, have done a masterful job creating the perfect setting for this new addition to the Museum. As Fairlie explains, “The main purpose of the landscaping is to set the stage for the sculpture and artwork. The landscaping serves as the platform, the frame, the back drop for each peice of art. While there is intentionally no vibrant seasonal color in the garden, you will see the dramatic changes of the seasons-the delicate Forest Pansy Redbud in early spring and the whimsical Whirling Butterfly along with the lovely Lime Light Hydrangeas appear as summer begins. In the Fall, the golden leaves of the Ginkgo and the multicolors of Chinese Pistach will delight as will the salmon twigs of the Japanese Maple and the beautiful peeling bark of the Bosque Elms throughout the winter. And yes, there are sweet fragrances of Tea Olive and Magnolias! I am very interested in seeing how the change in colors of the seasons will affect the sculptures. Many months ago when I first walked the garden grounds, construction had begun. There were brick walls and the promise of future walls. There were paver walks and walks waiting to erupt from the ground. With Jim Barganier’s magnificent plans, I could see what was to come and I was mesmorized.”

Architect, Jim Barganier, who designed the Museum in 1988, speaks of how the new gardens enhance the original plans which included the prospect of a garden -““A bridge that carries you to a special place of art, light and enlightenment” was the original design concept of the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts, spanning the peaceful lake to wherever artworks or musuem staff take you. The building was sited in such a way that one day a future garden on the opposite side from the lake could hopefully contain a water feature that would be “the source of water” that the Museum spans That hope has been realized with the construction of the John and Joyce Caddell Sculpture Garden. A water wall flowing into a 132 foot-long reflecting pool gives the sense of this source of water. It also introduces a visitor to the tranquil 2 ½ acre garden designed as an outdoor sculpture gallery to be used for display, education, as well as providing a variety of entertaining spaces.”
