BENNETT GALLERIES N A S H V I L L E, T E N N E S S E E stablished in 1977, Bennett Galleries houses a distinctive collection of contemporary fine art paintings and sculpture by established and emerging artists. Choose from a large, constantly evolving selection of abstract, landscape, and figurative works by local, regional, and international artists working in all mediums.

E

Bennett Galleries also creates custom archival framing and has a large selection of ready-made frames. The experienced staff is adept at framing design for any kind of environment, whether it’s a formal sitting room in a private home or a contemporary public area. With an unprecedented selection of European and American materials, Bennett Galleries has framing solutions for all kinds of art and special objects. The gallery is pleased to feature the works of Miranda Herrick and Shane Miller. Visit the gallery in person or online at bennettgalleriesnashville. Miranda Herrick was born in Vicenza, Italy in 1977. Her father’s military career took her family many places before they settled in Clarksville, TN in the early 1990’s. Herrick graduated from Austin Peay State University in the fall of 1999 with a Bachelor of Fine Art, concentrating in drawing and ceramics. She currently lives and works in Nashville, TN. Herrick’s drawings tend to be very structured geometric patterns. These drawings begin with penciled grid lines and grow out with repetitive, pen-and-ink line work which is done freehand. The process is meditative in nature. Subdividing the space on a sheet of paper with pen marks has evolved into recycling post-consumer aluminum cans to fill in blocks of color on a wooden panel. The shift in

Miranda Herrick, Linoleum Tile Print, 12” x 12”

materials allows Herrick to create larger designs and gives the shapes and colors a subtext. A careful observer can discover what product these aluminum cans carried before they were repurposed. A thoughtful environmentalist might be made uncomfortable anew with the evidence of accumulation in the repetition of the pieces. Miranda Herrick, Reflective V A and B, 36” x 36”

Like reaching to grasp the visuals of a dream as they dematerialize, Shane Miller’s encaustic body of work makes a viewer ache with longing for more: more immersion, more understanding, more tactility. Unlike reaching for a dream, Shane’s work always offers more: more emotion, more variety, more understanding of one’s self. Shane’s work is felt first and understood second. Just as his layers of oil paint are suspended in sheets of encaustic wax, his viewer is suspended in an ardent longing and understanding prompted by a soulful experience.

Inspired by a sense of nostalgia, the work feels like a silenced emotion, a childhood home, and a potent future in simultaneous measure. Working in oil and wax on board and canvas, Shane builds into his dreamscapes a reverence for past memories. the moments feel fleeting but are born of complex layers of paint and wax which ensure an everlasting opportunity for desiderium.

PERRY AUSTIN

Home Again, oil, 20” x 48”

erry Austin is an observant painter, never relying on what has worked in the past to solve the problems inherent to the painting process. Each canvas, each view is unique. His palette today depends on what his eyes see before him – will there be three colors or fifteen? Perry’s instructors were the masters of the past, both those hanging in museums he visited and those who wrote of their own journeys – from Cennino Cennini to John Carlson to Edgar Payne.

P

With his roots in rural Alabama, Perry has an innate love of the landscape both as a painter and a fisherman. His professional affiliations include Oil Painters of America and Plein Air Painters of the Southeast. His work resides in museums and personal collections across the country. Perry happily resides and paints in the Alabama hills at Box Turtle Farm with his wife, Carol.

VININGS GALLERY R O S W E L L, G E O R G I A inings Gallery looks forward to kicking off 2020 with a bang and their first-ever artist show with contemporary artist, John Stango the weekend of January 17, 2020.

V

With a distinctive Americana style, Stango builds upon 1950’s artistic tradition, infusing it with a new vibrant, colorful approach. A direct descendant of Norman Rockwell, Stango was born and raised in Philadelphia. With a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting and Graphic Design from Tyler School of Art at Temple University, Stango drew the attention of Macy’s and Bloomingdale’s department stores who hired him as a visual merchandiser and display artist in his early career. He soon began creating original silk-screened t-shirts that his former employers chose to carry in their stores. As his reputation in the region continued to grow, Stango turned his attention and energy to painting full time. Currently working out of a backwoods warehouse in Philadelphia, Stango draws artistic inspiration from retro advertising, pop icons, B-movies, mid-century modernism, magazines, film noir, vintage signage and all things pop-culture. His work is at once nostalgic and modern. Intense brush strokes, explosions of color, aggressive textures, and juxtaposed images yield distinctive and recognizable canvasses. His subjects compete with and complement one another, yielding exceptional artistic compositions. Stango’s paintings draw a diverse crowd to galleries spanning from New York to California, and Sweden to Japan. The artist’s reinterpretations of classical icons resonate strongly in 21st Century America. In addition to promoting his art, Stango also remains deeply committed to philanthropy, using his paintings and proceeds to benefit charities and education around the world. Visit viningsgallery.com for more details about the show dates and times and to see the exclusive body of work created just for Vinings Gallery.

adison Faile’s talent in drawing is remarkable and his compositions unexpected. He obtains the rare ability to paint emotions on canvas. Whether in the searching gaze of a clown or the ethereal stationary flight of black birds, intuitive feelings consume the canvas and viewer. And from those feelings, one begins to see Madison: he is visible within his works. His experiences in life both joyous and melancholy, his constant curious exploration of various mediums of art and his growth as he pushes to find the best within himself all within clear sight. To experience the works of Madison Faile is to follow his journey. Do not expect to do so without a state of feeling.

MAC-GRYDER GALLERY N E W O R L E A N S, L O U I S I A N A ean Mitchell is one of the most heralded living artists in the United States today. His technical skill is unsurpassed, and the emotional impact of his work is unforgettable. During his four-decade-long career, he has been recognized with hundreds of awards. His work is featured in museums, corporate and private collections throughout the country, and New York Times art critic Michael Kimmelman praised him as a “modern-day Vermeer.”

D

Mitchell’s unique voice reflects the American landscape, both geographic and personal, more keenly than any other painter. With searing insights into the human experience, he gives us a clearer picture of ourselves - beautiful, flawed and compelling - painted with an unflinching eye. Born in Pittsburgh and raised by his grandmother in Quincy, Florida, Dean’s talent asserted itself despite the adverse conditions of his early life. He won a scholarship to and graduated from the Columbus School of Art & Design in Columbus, Ohio. His successful international career has been distinguished by groundbreaking achievements and upended stereotypes. At the age of twenty-three, he became the youngest artist ever accepted into the National Watercolor Society; just five years later he was admitted into the American Watercolor Society. He holds numerous gold medals from these and other prestigious painting associations worldwide. DOT COURSON STUDIO AND GALLERY P O N T O T O C, M I S S I S S I P P I illiam Merritt Chase once advised art students, “Do not try to paint the grandiose thing. Paint the commonplace so that it will be distinguished. “

W

Recently Dot added, “Art is a personal vision and an attempt to make the most faithful statement about people, time and places in our society. Perhaps the most profound statement an artist can make is to take a deep look into the place where she lives. An artist’s work truly shows our spirit, who we are, and how we relate to the world. I hope the viewer feels my connection to the land, people and nature of the south. My own voice is a reflection of my deep abiding love of the rural southern landscape; it’s a shared story about the lands - a salute to where I was born and raised and scenes observed during my life. I hope it is something for the south to relate to, be proud of, and people from elsewhere can be happy to view.”

RUTHIE CARLSON FINE ART M O N T G O M E R Y, A L A B A M A I cannot remember a day that I did not have a crayon or paintbrush in my hand. My daddy owned a printing company, and when I was little he would take me with him on Saturday mornings to draw and dream among infinite shelves of paper. I knew then I would be an artist. My closet was my very first studio. I pushed my clothes to one side, brought in a lamp, and meticulously displayed all my paints, markers, and crayons.

That was just the beginning, and I have been painting ever since. It is my joy to get to paint every day, and to share my passion with other women who come for art classes or just a cup of coffee. Being an artist is so much more than putting paint on a canvas. I am thankful for the unique opportunity that God has given me to share my gifts with others. It gives incredible meaning and purpose to my creative journey.” Visit her studio gallery in person or online at www.ruthiecarlson.com.

CALEB O’CONNOR T U S C A L O O S A, A L A B A M A

aleb O’Connor’s passion for art started at an early age. Growing up in Maui, Hawaii, O’Connor’s surroundings provided the perfect setting to develop his drawing, painting and sculpting skills. He attended the Maryland Institute College of Art, one of the oldest art colleges in the nation, and earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. In addition to his stint at MICA, he studied under the tutelage of Israel Hershberg in Jerusalem. Hershberg is the director and founder of the Jerusalem Studio School.

C

While O’Connor says he had interest in sculpting for as long as he remembers, he began focusing on his craft while studying abroad in Italy through a Fulbright Scholarship. Although the award was meant for him to study painting, his love for sculpting and public art started taking over. O’Connor has worked independently throughout his career. His art studio locations have varied from his home to the foundry on The University of Alabama campus. In 2013, O’Connor and his wife, Ruth, opened an educational studio in downtown Tuscaloosa. The O’Connor Art Studios was the birthplace of many of O’Connor’s concepts and pieces that recently captivated the community and state. The Tuscaloosa Federal Building and courthouse is home to 16 murals O’Connor created that depict pivotal moments in the history of the city, state and nation. The scenes go as far back as 800 years when local Native American tribes inhabited Moundville to as recent as the city’s recovery efforts following the April 27, 2011, tornado. A pair of O’Connor’s more recent sculptures paid homage to two of the state’s most famous sports figures. In 2016, his statue of Willie Mays was unveiled in front of Regions Field in Birmingham. The following year, O’Connor’s statue of WBC Heavyweight Boxing Champion and Tuscaloosa native Deontay Wilder was one of 23 finalists in the 2017 International Portrait Competition. O’Connor says he hopes his work creates an experience for all who encounter it as he strives to leave an openness that provokes questions and allows the viewer to search for their own interpretation of the piece. He believes this creates a better appreciation of the arts and leaves the beholder wanting to come back for more.
