“I love the gestural mark making that comes naturally from my body when I start a painting. The first step is very important and all intuitively. Then, the structural work comes next; the challenges of working out relationships between the shapes (that was created intuitively) into a successful composition. Whether I work on an abstract or a representational, this challenge is the same. I like to experiment with shape, line, unexpected color relationship, value, primitive brush stroke, and texture. When I paint a landscape, my focus is on creating a certain mood. I want to transform a common scene into a work that is unique.”-Monique Carr

DIXON GALLERY AND GARDENS M E M P H I S, T E N N E S S E E

Power and Piety: Spanish Colonial Art, July 16 – September 24 ower & Piety: Spanish Colonial Art includes fifty-seven sumptuous paintings, sculptures, furniture, and silver objects produced in Central and South America between the 1680 and 1820. The works are drawn from the Patricia Phelps de Cisneros Collection and exemplify the mastery attained by colonial artists as well as the rich diversity of themes, styles, and materials of Spanish Colonial art. As Spanish Americans grew affluent from cattle ranching and the trade of tobacco, cocoa, and sugar cane, a thriving market for religious works of art – both public and domestic – grew among the port cities of the Caribbean, the Gulf of Mexico, and the Canary Islands en route to Spain. Rich supplies of precious metals, rare pigments, and native woods allowed highly skilled artists and artisans of Central and South America to create luxury goods that competed with those imported from Europe. This exhibition sheds light on the daily life and religious practices of Latin Americans from different economic backgrounds, as well as the nature of commercial exchange in the region, through a selection of works from artists working in Venezuela, Brazil, Mexico, Bolivia, Cuba, Puerto Rico, and beyond.

P

Power & Piety is filled with works of fine and decorative art created for the many churches that populated Latin America, religious works of art created for the home, and objects intended for private devotional use. Ranging from paintings of saints to furniture used in devotional practices, these works illuminate how both piety and social ambition fueled the production and conspicuous consumption of religious art in these culturally rich societies.Visit www.dixon.org for more information on this and other upcoming exhibits. rand New Orleans Art Gallery is dedicated to representing emerging and established Southern artists with a particular focus on artists from Louisiana and inspired by its heritage. They aspire to create an environment that encourages people from all walks of life to visit the gallery and meet their artists. When you enter the gallery their hope is that you are immersed in the featured artists world.

The gallery is pleased to feature the work of Epaul Julien. In his latest body of work Epaul freely repurposes original photographic imagery, extant images from the Internet, magazines, and newspapers, public archives and from other works of art to create a new perspective of southeastern Louisiana. He does this to create a hyperbolical narrative of the history and nature of Southeastern Louisiana and Haiti. The work represents the physical world, but also the metaphysical aspects of reality. The dynamic spectacle of animals and ogres creates a sense of adventure combined with symbolism that leads to new ways of experiencing a unique region of world.Notably the techniques of cut-and-paste, re-photography, double exposure, and other object oriented studio practice or finally transferred onto a gold or silver leaf substrate and coated with resin. MARY HONG GALLERY G R A Y T O N B E A C H, F L O R I D A

M

ary Hong is an award-winning and successful artist and entrepreneur on the Emerald Coast of Florida. Having developed a devoted base of fans and followers, Mary opened her own gallery five years ago and added a new art-making studio two years ago that has piqued the interests of locals and visitors alike.

Originally from Wisconsin, Mary received her undergraduate degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Post graduation launched her into an 18 year career as a flight attendant, mixing her passion for travel with art by free-lancing as a graphic artist in Kailua, Hawaii, her home for nearly 15 years. Mary and her husband, a commercial airline pilot, relocated to the Emerald Coast in 2004 where she joined the Eglin Aero Club to complete her multi-engine commercial pilot’s rating before giving birth to her twins Kai and Rain in 2006. As her twins entered preschool, she went back into the art world, opening two thriving businesses in Grayton Beach, FL: Mary Hong Gallery and The Shard Shop. Mary continually participates in art shows and fund raisers, teaches art workshops, mentors local artists, and spends as much time as possible with her twins. She has developed a unique art form that combines paint and glass on canvas that is sold in eight states including seven galleries in Florida. MARISOL GULLO S A N T A R O S A B E A C H, F L O R I D A

S

outh Walton 2017 Artist of the Year, Marisol Gullo, owns and operates Not Too Shabby Boutique in Santa Rosa Beach, Florida along with her husband, Tony. There they specialize in restoring custom furniture and is where Marisol’s passion for art took off.

Marisol has taken her life experience and built her own, one of a kind aesthetic and vision. Growing up in Costa Rica, she earned her law degree and became a lawyer. She and Tony met in Costa Rica where they decided to get married and move to the United States shortly thereafter. Tony had vacationed in South Walton as a child and brought Marisol to the Gulf Coast during their honeymoon and she immediately fell in love. They promised each other that they would move to the area one day to start their family and sure enough, within a year they packed up and moved to South Walton in 2001. Drawn to the beautiful and peaceful way of life in South Walton, Marisol felt that there could be no place more perfect to raise a family. She and her family love the community and have built a life and a business here. Marisol loves the melting pot feel of the area and loves that so many people have chosen to live here on these beautiful beaches and all realize how special a place South Walton truly is. Believing in following one’s dreams, adapting to any situation, and to challenge yourself both in your personal life and your art is fundamental for Marisol. And, discovering new inspiration is the most rewarding part of her work as an artist. For more information on her works visit www.nottooshabbyboutique.net.

BRANCH TECHNOLOGY C H A T T A N O O G A, T E N N E S S E E Where technology meets art and design

I

n the amazing world of technology comes a new company with new ideas. Nothing, new, right? Well, yes it is! Branch Technology, founded by R. Platt Boyd IV and Christopher W. Weller, is turning architecture on it’s head. Using Cellular Fabrication™ with freeform 3-d printing, Branch is creating magnificent structures beyond your imagination.

Freeform printing in open space is not constrained to the slow, layer-by-layer build process of traditional 3D printing.Their algorithm creates both the geometry and robotic motion to construct complex geometries in open space, without the use of support materials or highly controlled build environments. United with tried and true building materials and methods, this delivers a product that is as robust as it is revolutionary. “Our company, Branch Technology, is based in Chattanooga, TN, and has invented a unique form of 3D printing called “Cellular Fabrication”, or CFAB™. This process can create strong and lightweight structures by extruding and solidifying plastic in open space - literally ‘drawing’ in midair. We are working toward using these lightweight open structures as a scaffold onto which conventional construction materials like foam and concrete may be applied, thus creating a wall, roof, or other building assembly having the complexity of the 3D printed shape without the use of expensive and wasteful formwork techniques. The following photos are from a large project called ‘Flotsam and Jetsam’, which was designed by SHoP Architects of NYC and installed at Design Miami in November of 2016. The entire structure was 3D printed, and includes printed components manufactured by Branch (the copper-colored open structures) and by Oak Ridge National Laboratory (the tan-colored solid structures).” -Chris Weller, co-founder For further information visit www.branch.technology to view more of their exciting creations and future projects.

PEGGY MUSSAFER M O N T G O M E R Y, A L A B A M A

“

What I design for myself is not necessarily the style I design for my clients. I often have said that I really play amateur psychiatrist in that I have always tried to get into the heads of my clients and give them what they are comfortable living with. I feel very strongly that a client’s house should reflect their life style and their taste.

My personal taste is traditional with organized clutter and contemporary art. I began to collect art when I went to college-my first purchases were a pair of Picasso prints that I used to decorate my dorm room and still have them hanging today in my house. Picasso still tends to be one of my favorite artists, but since I cannot collect works of famous painters I decided a long time ago to collect works by artists I know, have known or wish to know that appeal to me. I think art is the most personal possession you can own. My only suggestion when buying art for your personal enjoyment, (not investment ) is buy what moves you emotionally and a work that you never get tired of studying. -Peggy Mussafer, interior designer and art collector. 64 Art Galleries&artists of the South

JOHNSON CENTER FOR THE ARTS T R O Y, A L A B A M A

T

he Johnson Center for the Arts in Troy, Alabama was born in 2000 through a grassroots effort by a dedicated group of art lovers who were on a mission to accomplish two very important things: save Troy's historic 1910 classical revival styled U.S. Post Office from demolition and transform it into the first and only cultural arts center in Pike County, Alabama. Their dream became reality when renovations began in 2007. The 2008 Grand Opening was highlighted by an exhibition of The Works of Andy Warhol from the Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh.

Since that time, the Holman and Ethel Johnson Center for the Arts has become known and respected throughout the region for presenting exceptional visual arts exhibitions and educational programming. Recents and upcoming exhibits include the works of David Keith Braly, Barbara Davis and Michael Vaughn Sims. For more information about the Center and upcoming exhibits and events visit in person or online at www.tpcac.org.
