ARTwear 2012 is The Art Gallery of Calgary’s Annual Fall Fashion Fundraiser. The evening’s festivities include a Silent Auction composed of items donated by local businesses. ARTwear 2012 VIP reception, general reception and fashion show will be held at Hotel Arts (119 - 12 Ave SW) on Thursday, November 8, 2012. Fashion show begins at 8:30pm, starting with the ACAD Students Wearable Art Showcase followed by fashion designers Paul Hardy and Lara Presber, retail boutiques Henry Singer, Mealan, Coco + Violet, Leo Boutique and clothing from Echo Evenings and BCBG. The theme for the night is Vintage Hollywood, come dressed looking glitzy, glam and dapper! Bring out your pearls, fur, sequins, feathers, and gloves to celebrate in style.

Biography Dee Fontans has been a part of the Calgary community for over twenty years. Ms. Fontans has dedicated her working career and life to the development of the arts as a master craftsman, volunteer and educator. As an artist Dee is committed to material culture and creativity. Fontans studied fashion design at Parsons The New School of Design in NYC and jewellery at the State University of New York at New Paltz. She is an internationally recognized jeweller, performance artist and educator. Dee is a part of the faculty at the Alberta College of Art + Design and teaches in the Jewelery + Metals program and the Wearable Art class. Her professional experience outside of academia includes curating, public speaking, writing poetry and publishing. Dee is proud to be a Cultural Ambassador for Calgary 2012. Artist Statement Dee said, “Ding Ding I turned the Bike into Bling!” What should I do to be Eco and Chic? Them suddenly a bike whizzed by in my mind and said, “HEY Dee, Beep Beep.” My idea became crystal clear It’s de-construction, then re-construction It’s tires and tubes, chains and sprockets, reflectors and bells These designs are swell A dress, a corset, a bracelet, a necklace, Add some kinky gear too… belts, earrings, rings and a pocket book

Stephanie Elderfield

Biography Stephanie Elderfield is a Calgary based clothing and jewelry designer breaking out onto the local fashion scene. Her work has been exhibited as part of the Sweet City Woman Calgary 2012 opening ceremony, and a NUTV documentary entitled Artistic City Zenship. Her jewelry pieces have been displayed in multiple shows at the Alberta College of Art + Design. Miss Elderfield is inspired by the concept of play and its varying definitions. Artist Statement I am drawn to the sea.The water is my home, my love, my passion. I have spent many years participating in recreational water sports, from sailing to scuba diving to competitive swimming.These activities are the inspiration behind Marina.The materials used to create this collection include fishing lures, life jackets and salvaged sailcloth. *Photo credit: Joe Kelly

Nicole

Emerson

Biography Nicole Emerson is an interdisciplinary artist that pulls inspiration from all walks of life. Her artistic interests range from photography, to jewelry, painting and sculpture. Nicole’s work has been exhibited in the Calgary Stampede Western Showcase. As a featured artist at Burning Man in the Pop up city of Black Rock City, NV. Nicole’s installation of mirrors was constructed by a team of fifteen technicians. Miss. Emerson passion for culture, history and humanity is an integrated part of her practice and her current career as Homecare employee. Artist Statement Being schooled in the practice of painting I took the idea for wearable art literally when designing my collection “Striped Whimsy”. Using acrylic paint as my medium it became the core material in this collection. Chantal

Louise

Biography Utilizing the different areas of study in her years at ACAD, switching majors from drawing to jewellery and metals, Chantal has finally found her forte in the fibre arts department. After working with some of the most influential women of Calgary fashion, from assisting with runway shows to working beside them on a day to day basis, Chantal is beginning to create her own interpretation of art and fashion. Artist Statement Staying true to my personal practice in pattern making and garment construction, I have created an illusion of Vintage Hollywood. Incorporating the raw underground art scene of early New York, I reference the notorious party girl Edie Sedgwick: ‘To me New York is Jackson Pollock sipping vodka and dripping paint over a raw canvas’. After sewing over 50 feet of painted canvas, I have brought this quote to life. *Photo credit: Joe Kelly

Betsy

Hinze

Biography Betsy Hinze is more than just your typical glass-blowing, pie-baking, nature-walking art student. She also knows how to create a compelling piece of art. Born in 1991 in Idaho, Betsy started doing art at a young age from finger-painting walls to sculpting mud pies. Today, Betsy is attending Alberta College of Art and Design in Calgary specializing in glassblowing and interactive installations, and perfecting her baking skills in her (rare) spare time. To learn more about Betsy, please visit her website at www. betsyhinze.com. Artist Statement Growing up with two geologists as parents, I was often exposed to the wonders of the natural world. One particular experience I remember very clearly was the first time my mom showed me a geode. It was a plain, boring rock on the outside, but when we hit it with a hammer and cracked it open it was full of glittering crystals! I try to look below the surface, beyond the superficial, always hunting for the crystals on the inside.

Evania

Jorquera

Biography Evania came to Calgary to attend the Alberta College of Art + Design and explore her artistic interests. Evania’s work ethic has been acknowledged as she has received the Jason Lang Scholarship three years in a row. Ms. Jorquera has had her work exhibited around ACAD and has volunteered as a model on multiple occasions. Artist Statement Using a variety of techniques, I juxtapose light and dark, male and female to examine duality. Nature is a beautiful facet of my imagery, especially the five elements: Air, Fire,Water, Earth and Spirit. Each of these elements is infused into my practice.This creates an intimate relationship between maker and wearer. The use of gemstones brings the earth and humans closer together. It reminds us how precious and powerful these objects are. Exploring new ways to create is therapeutic and meditative. Christine Mould

Biography Christine Mould is an artist working in digital media and photography. Her work is based around adorning the human body. Hailing from the small town of Fort Nelson, B.C., she moved to the city of Calgary in 2010. Being in the city these past few years has provided a wide range of culture, a more diverse network, and plenty of experience. She is inspired by fashion and is interested in capturing people in all types of atmospheres. She is currently studying in her third year at the Alberta College of Art + Design. Artist Statement The garments created for Menagerie An Affair to Adorn are inspired by the theme of ARTwear’s 10th anniversary’s fashion event,Vintage Hollywood. Further influences come from the 1930’s and 40’s photographer George Hurrell, who captured many of the leading ladies of the day. The pieces reference the style from this romantic era and celebrate a glamourous period in time. “She’s a Lady” shows off the elegance and poise of the women.

Katie

Nielsen

Biography Katie Nielsen’s interest in Wearable Art has led her to study Jewelry design at The Alberta College of Art + Design. Her practice is expanding into full body adornment and fashion design, Katie is a huge fan of super heroes, comics, and really anything to do with extraordinary human powers, which has led her into researching alternate realities. Artist Statement My interest in alternate realities has led my research towards the idea of steam punk which is heavily influenced in the work. Outside influences such as the community have also contributed to the idea that I am portraying.The base idea of Victorian Fashion, infused with modern technology is present in the work.

Lauren

Reich

Biography Lauren Reich is an emerging fibre artist from Calgary, Alberta currently studying at the Alberta College of Art + Design. With no singular encompassing concept her work varies in its manifestations and techniques, often employing processes such as weaving, dyeing, printing, and embroidery. Artist Statement Recitation, reading, and recording are all methods that expedite communication and more importantly, understanding between people. Each individual grapheme carries with it the hope that eventually the emotions that have been imbued within will be fundamentally understood. In many cultures, mastery of these three components of language is in itself considered a high art.

Juliana

Rose

Biography Juliana Rose is from a mountainous town in B.C. She is currently a student at the Alberta College of Art + Design (ACAD), majoring in Ceramics. Her work has been exhibited at ACAD. Self-expression by means of art has enriched her life through healing, empowerment and personal growth. Juliana teaches drawing and painting at Aliki’s Art House, this experience is preparing her for a career in Art Therapy. Artist Statement “No matter where you run, you just end up running into yourself. “ (Breakfast at Tiffany’s) So you’d better look phenomenal. Reach into that closet and find something classic, sexy and iconic. Something that make you memorable. The little black dress.This piece is inspired by that Vintage Hollywood look, Breakfast at Tiffany’s adding a unique geometric flare for a grand and glam entrance everyone will remember.

Jennifer

Shea

Biography Loss and beauty walk hand in hand more often then realized, knowing this Jennifer has thought extensively about how she would transform these two emotions into an art form. She has chosen to portray these emotions through two elegant evening gowns. There is a certain importance in having both dresses hand crafted giving the two pieces the intimate touch she is looking for. Artist Statement My art practice explores personal experiences and my constant involvement with members of the Canadian Forces. I redefine everyday found materials within the military. It is my intension to engage the eyes and minds of the viewers and create a new and expanded perspective.This topic is both political and controversial. Lindsey Shechosky

Biography Lindsey Shechosky is an upcoming artist with a focus in functional design, such as jewelry, textiles and other physically useful media. Incorporating symbolic elements drawn from sex, sexuality, psychology, and occasionally mythology, Lindsey looks to give a less bashful view of the world at large. Inspired by Victorian era clothing and jewelry as well as art from the Baroque period, she draws influence from each of these to feature into her work, using them as a foil of modern attitudes toward women and feminine sexuality. Lindsey also draws from mythology where women are both powerful and meager, boastful and pitiful, punishment and prize. Her ultimate artistic goal is to represent femininity in the most well-rounded of lights. Artist Statement Do you like racy dance numbers? Do you like sweets and treats? What happens when burlesque takes the form of edible style? I have created a feast for the eyes and mouth featuring head-to-toe edible costumes, from sugar-glass fan-fare and chocolate jewelry to candy corsets and bodices.The work was originally inspired by the traditionally male-driven art form of burlesque. I find it awakens the impetus to reclaim female sexuality and celebrate the raunchier side of the human experience.

Michelle Smyth

Biography Michelle Smyth is in her third year at Alberta College of Art + Design. She has participated in group exhibitions at ACAD and the 2011 Calgary Stampede. Michelle has devoted her community efforts to a program called Rainbows International - Cornerstone of Hope. This Not-For-Profit Organization provides support to children and adults who have experienced loss thru separation, divorce, death or abandonment. Mentoring to youth is a stepping-stone to Michelle’s long term goal to become an Art Therapist. Michelle also enjoys leisure activities such as reading, writing poetry, photography and painting. Artist Statement The magical land of fairies and fantasy world of Hollywood collide in the garments of “Sparks Take Flight”. Brittany Steinhubl

Biography Brittany Steinhubl is an aspiring jeweler in her third year at the Alberta College of Art + Design. Brittany has always admired the aesthetic of an object while traveling through life; taking each experience as inspiration to develop all facets of her practice further. Artist Statement Underneath elaborate facades we hide. Afraid to be beautiful, afraid to love, afraid to truly live.We fashion ourselves in ways that we feel exude confidence.When really these prescriptions are just an armor fabricated from obsession and fitted to our insecurities.

Karin

Thorsteinsson

Biography Karin Thorsteinsson is a third year student at the Alberta College of Art + Design, majoring in Fibre Arts. Two summer residencies with the Contextural Fibre arts cooperative have allowed her to develop fundamental material manipulation skills. Her collection of work includes many silk paintings, and a selection of wearable silk pieces. Artist Statement This collection is inspired by Films from the Hollywwod studio era (1920-1950), but by using Japanese natural and synthetic dye techniques, and traditional French Devore technique, I am hoping to showcase a contemporary take on traditional dressmaking styles. Ashley Vu

Biography Ashley Vu is an emerging artist studying at ACAD.Vu pushes the boundaries of the fine art experience. Her art practice circles the traditions of painting with conceptual photographs. Ashley is interweaving themes of identity through the exploration of her environment, cultural background and personal experiences. Artist Statement “A girl knows her limits but a wise girl knows she has none.” – Marilyn Monroe The inspiration of these corsets, chains and collars comes from the women identity in society’s workforce. Being tied down, Being compared, Stereotypes, Feeling undersized, Restrictions, limits, and boundaries. We cannot change what was once the norm… What might still be the norm. We WERE here. We ARE here. We WILL excel, We WILL surpass, We will ROCK it.

Tara-Marie Winspur

Biography Tara-Marie’s art foundation was heavily influenced and nourished from her attendance at The Calgary Waldorf School from pre-school through to grade nine. She trained pre-professionally as a dancer until she graduated High School with a Fine Arts Diploma in dance from Central Memorial. She is currently in her last year of study at ACAD in the Sculpture department. Artist Statement What does it mean to mute a sense? In Stifle I have began to explore the results of inhibiting specific senses. Each sense is muted by a beeswax barrier, the beeswax drips causing new awareness of the body, its place, and what is affected when you remove just a single sense.
