Landscape Art & Cityscape Art We live in a duality, surrounded by naturally produced landscape and man-produced cityscapes, side-by-side, each inspiring us and drawing us into their uniquely different, yet strangely corresponding attributes. Many seek to differentiate between landscapes and cityscapes, yet an emotionally open conversation about our modern -scapes reveal just how similar our connection is to both. Regardless of the type, both landscapes and cityscapes touch on basic emotional responses in viewers. They depict in simple term the tapestry of our modern lives, whether in the natural world of mother nature or the concrete world of the cities we have built. -scapes draw the viewer into the scenes with illustrious adaptations of the passage of time and familiarities. “My aim is to capture the fleeting moment” says Kathleen Walsh when describing her scenes. In her piece, California Dreaming, Big Sur, we see her use of tones and palette as they loosely, almost abstractly - with hard and faint lines - convey an emotional temperance to a scene whose existence was short lived. Linda Hollett-Bazouzi is “driven by a sense of impending change, whether by human development or weather, season or light”, when she chooses her scenes. A viewer can see this impending change in her piece, Rappahannock River, October. The ripples of the river are almost lifelike with Hollett’s interplay of blue tones and her use of detailed lines. Overlapping lines accentuate the different cloud structures and foreshadow a changing front - allowing the viewer to not only look at the painting, but allow us to view the scene in person. Diane Pyun, subtly hints at this change and immersion. “The same scene asks to be painted repeatedly as the atmosphere changes”, says Pyun. Her diverse use of
shadowy tones, mixed with a rich palette are on display in her piece Lost Stories, which captures the fading sunlight and beckons the day to a close. Her goal is to “capture the imagination of the viewer and jog memories of their own experiences.” This jogging of memories draws our emotional connection to landscapes and cityscapes and allows us to experience the sights and sounds first hand. Nicole Kennedy “shadows and use of subtle colors take a back seat to the intensity of focal points...”. In her piece, Most Beautiful Balcony, she uses hard and soft edges to direct how she wants the “viewer to travel around the canvas”. The careful interplay of shadows and color direction draw the viewer into the painting with warmth and comfort. The emotional connection of the viewer’s mood is a goal of Rebekah Haslett - “It’s hard to define but it’s a combination of light and color and mood that all comes together to make me want to paint it”. Rebekah’s careful and deliberate brush strokes in Maine Waves punctuate the sensory reaction for “a viewer to be[sic] want to “walk into” my paintings”. This lure into a painting does not stop at realism landscapes and cityscapes. A wonderful juxtaposition is Ginny Lassiter’s abstract landscape, City Series II. Her use of “ architectural elements, in particular rooflines” creates an optical temptation of walking around the painting. Although abstract a viewer senses familiarity with the lines and edges. The essence of time and participation draws us into understanding the presence of landscape and cityscape paintings. Their relevance to our surroundings allows the viewer to connect with the emotional temperance of the scene and allows the viewer to develop that quintessential connection that draws us in to where we can smell, touch, and feel the scene. In the following pages we have featured some award-winning artists whose works depict the very -scapes we seek to escape into.

The Georgia Museum of Art - Virginia and Alfred Kennedy and Philip Henry Alston Jr. Galleries. This exhibition showcases over 50 works by artists in the Larry D. and Brenda A. Thompson Collection of African American Art. In addition, it celebrates the inception of the Thompsons’ endowed curatorship, currently held by Dr. Shawnya L. Harris. The Thompsons donated 100 works of art to the Georgia Museum of Art in 2012, and this exhibition provides an overview of certain aspects of the Thompsons’ commitment to art collecting over the last several decades in tandem with discussions about the shifting artistic and political landscape for African American artists found in their collection. Artists include Amalia Amaki, Kara Walker, Benny Andrews, Elizabeth Catlett, Hale Woodruff, Charles Ethan Porter, Norman Lewis, Stefanie Jackson, Bob Blackburn, Archibald Motley, Howardena Pindell, and Mildred Thompson. VMFA exhibition to explore transformative power of jewelry, art objects The Rachel Lambert Mellon Collection of Jean Schlumberger RICHMOND, VA. Artist-jeweler Jean Schlumberger (zhahn SCHLUM-ber-zhay) transformed 20th-century fashion with his creative designs for highly sculptural, vibrant, and whimsical jewelry and acces-
sories. His witty designs for objects ranging from cigarette cases and pill boxes to brooches, necklaces, and bracelets were popular with some of the most celebrated and stylish women of the period. With 142 pieces, the exhibition celebrates the generosity of Rachel “Bunny” Lambert Mellon (1910-2014), a noted horticulturist, philanthropist, and longtime VMFA supporter. With husband Paul Mellon, Mrs. Mellon, who was his second wife, also gave an important collection of French art, including important nuclei of works by Edgar Degas, Claude Monet, and Pierre Bonnard, among many others. Paul Mellon also donated a large part of his preeminent collections of British and American art. Dr. Mitchell Merling, VMFA’s Paul Mellon Curator and Head of the Department of European Art, curated the exhibition with Kristie Couser, Curatorial Associate for the Mellon Collections. The Rachel Lambert Mellon Collection of Jean Schlumberger is presented exclusively at VMFA and features many works on public display for the first time. “The works of art that debut here collectively reveal the dedication to perfection and beauty that united the artist and his great friend and patron,” Merling said.

Advanced and Irascible: Abstract Expressionism from the Collection of Jeanne and Carroll Berry at The Georgia Museum of Art ATHENS, GA. The Georgia Museum of Art - Lamar Dodd Gallery. This exhibition showcases Jeanne and Carroll Berry’s efforts to gather one work by each of the so-called “Irascible” painters of abstract expressionism. The Irascibles earned their nickname after sending a signed, open letter to the Metropolitan Museum of Art to protest the lack of what they called “advanced” art in its exhibition of contemporary artists in 1950. A photograph of them that appeared in Life Magazine in 1951 became the defining image of the abstract expressionists for the remainder of the 20th century. This exhibition will feature works by, among others, Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko, Adolph Gottlieb, Willem de Kooning, Hedda Sterne, and Ad Reinhardt. THRU April 30th.

Third annual Olmsted Plein Air Invitational Art Event April 2 – 9, 2017 Cognoscenti agree, after a run up of just two short years, Atlanta is taking its place as one of the largest and most prestigious juried plein air painting competitions in the United States with the third annual Olmsted Plein Air Invitational. Atlanta Collects: Contemporary Art Treasures from Atlanta’s Private Collectors ATLANTA - The Breman Museum presents the second phase of its groundbreaking art show from private collections with Atlanta Collects Contemporary Art: Treasures from Atlanta’s Private Collectors, March 13 running through Sunday, June 11, 2017. “The contemporary show highlights works for the 21st century that really is the art of our time, of this generation,” said exhibition curator Dr. William Eiland, Director of the Georgia Museum of Art at the University of Georgia. “The idea was to investigate collectors and show the strength of collecting within the Jewish community in Atlanta.” Rarely-seen works by Chuck Close, Thornton Dial, Lauren Lambrecht, Radcliffe Bailey and others form part of this brilliant exhibition, following on the heels of the first Atlanta Collects show which represented art movements of the 19th and 20th centuries. Aaron Berger, Executive Director of the Breman Museum, said, “What I like about this show is that it represents ‘the art of the now.’ The works displayed are by artists who may not necessarily be household names but are forging new ground in art worldwide.” Berger said the caliber of the art on display is “truly exceptional.” Atlanta Collects Contemporary exhibitor Lisa Brill said the show “is so visually exciting, colorful, and multi-dimensional. There is glass, photography, a couple of large installation pieces. There is a Sandy Skoglund piece done with jelly beans that will spark the senses. We have a sculpture by Richard Jolley that represents the best of what he does. We also have a piece in there by British painter Fiona Rae. I just think this show is going to knock people’s socks off.” Berger said the exhibition is only on for 12 weeks “and then it’s gone forever.” He calls
it “a rare opportunity to see contemporary works that have never been exhibited together before and range from sculpture to paintings to bronze busts to photography. The thread tying these works together is the Jewish collectors of Atlanta,” he praised their role in supporting emerging artists and for making a difference in the local art scene. “This is a perfect chance to see the quality of what these collectors have brought together,” Dr. Eiland said. “It will be unlike anything else they’ll see. However it is defined, abstract art challenges us to interpret an image that, in no way, resembles the kind of images our brain is programmed to understand. A study by neuroscientist, Eric Kandel, proposes that because our brain must work harder and in a different way to understand abstract art, people often find it intimidating.

The current show at 311 Gallery includes abstract art that runs the range from slight to complete abstraction. The artists have used varied techniques, media, and genre creating a very cohesive visual experience that is not at all intimidating!
Abstract Matters
We think of abstract art as being a contemporary phenomena but its roots can be traced back to ancient rock paintings, textile patterns, and pottery designs that captured a symbolic reality. More recently, the impressionists and expressionist of the 19th century used numerous abstract techniques to capture emotion and subjectivity. Abstract art is broadly defined as non-objective and non-representational art. Unlike more traditional genres, abstract art uses the language of shape, form, color, brushstrokes, size, scale, and line, which have no source at all in an external visual reality, to show an alternative visual experience. Its departure from reality can be slight, partial, or complete. Definitions for abstract art involve ideas that revolve around a departure from reality: • Art that alters color and form in conspicuous ways • The creation of beautiful effects using pure patterns of form, color, and line • Gestural marks with no source at all to an
